LETTERS TO THE EDITORDear Rovers North,Our 24th Birthday Party at Silver Lake,Ontario, was blessed with super weather, great attendance and enough mud to wearwith pride.

We are writing on behalf of everyonewho attended this year’s event to thank youfor your generous donations and continuedsupport. Having a successful fund raisingauction is key to continuing our club’sannual traditional premier event.Jean-Leon Morin, PresidentDavid Pell, Secretary/TreasurerKevin Newell, Off Road CoordinatorOttawa Valley Land RoversCarp, ONCanada[Rovers North congratulates you and yourorganization for another sterling event. It’sa highlight of the North American eventcalendar –ed.]

Dear Sirs:I have always loved Land Rovers. I guess it isforemost the design of the older series thatgot me interested many years ago. Around2000 I bought my first Land Rover, a 1996Discovery. I only kept it for 3 years as I foundmaintaining it through the local dealershipexpensive. However, I knew deep downI would never be content until I ownedanother Rover.

About 3 years ago a fellow residentopened up a restaurant, where I would seehis Series Rover, sometimes pulling a smalltrailer filled with restaurant equipment orpicking up supplies. I was impressed that hedrove it daily; the dents and the generalcondition only added to its character.

For several years my wife continued tosay “no” to my pleas to purchase anotherRover. My first wish was a Defender 90 but allthe vehicles I priced were out of my range. Then one day a friend and I drove toSnohomish to see the cars at Black CatAntiques. Imagine my surprise and delight towhen I saw a 1971 late IIA sitting in theirstore. It was exactly what I had been lookingfor, mostly original with many restoredfeatures, a solid runner with a lot ofcharacter. Well, I immediately called my wife. She could hear the excitement in my voice asI described it to her.

After purchasing the car, the owner madecertain that I had a copy of The Rovers NorthNews. I immediately ordered a jump seat forthe back as well as other items. Within a weekI had taken possession of the Series IIA andI’ve spent many hours tinkering, cleaning anddriving it.

I feel that the older models embodythe original spirit, rugged design andfunctionality of what I was looking for in aLand Rover. Thanks for your terrific serviceand friendly staff at Rovers North.

Ben HarrisonDuvall, WA[Yes, we admire the Series I – III models, too. Enthusiasts with Discovery I-II vehicleshave found that many of the expensiverepairs once required at dealerships can beaccomplished with the right parts, tools, and expert assistance. We’re always happyto help –ed.]

Dear Rovers North,If, on these cold winter evenings, after a longday out in the garage under your favorite LandRover, you’re ready for a bit of “armchairRovering,” peck out www.imcdb.org/vehiclesinto your computer and before your eyeswill be displayed a listing of nearly everyautomotive conveyance that has everappeared in a movie or on television. Find“Land Rover” in the listing and you’ll findsome 1,187 different titles listed. Besides theusual Solihull Land Rovers, there are alsolistings for the more esoteric models such asthe Cuthbertson tracked Land Rover, theMinerva, the Santana as well as the interestingTempo.

Sorry to say that in this snowy season mybaby (’64 IIA 88”) is at the Cooper Technicashop for the installation of a set of LEDrunning/brake/turn signal lights as well asdelving into a box of gears to see why 4WD isbeing particularly reluctant and troublesomeof late. Can’t complain really, as it’s beenseveral years since anything’s gone wrongwith my daily driver.Glenn ShriverChicago, IL[Good luck with the new lamp installation.Let us know how they work out for you –ed.]

Dear Rovers North,I just wanted to say how much I enjoy theRovers North News. I really enjoyed MikeKoch’s article “Simply Irresistible.” The onlything, I was very sad that there were 5 pic-tures (including the cover) of his white RRC.My Dad has owned a ’91 RRC for about 10years and I have a ’93 LWB, and never gettired of seeing pictures of them. Mike talkedabout his leather seats but we never got to seeany cabin shots.D. Aaron ConwaySt. Louis Park, MN[Range Rover owners tend to becomeRange Rover enthusiasts and Mike’s articlehelp detail just why that happens. Glad youenjoyed the article. Why not send us somephotos of your Range Rover? –ed]

Hello Rovers North,We’ve been receiving the Rovers North Newsever since my husband got his belovedDefender 90. Two Christmas’ ago, he got mea ’94 Range Rover Classic, and I was delight-

ed to read “Simply Irresistible” in the Winter2008 issue. Mike Koch’s love for his Classic isexactly the love I have for mine (which alsohas only 3 working windows). I fell in lovewith Range Rovers 10 years ago when myhusband and I were driving behind one justlike my current car. We were expecting ourfirst boy and times were tough. I remembertelling my mother that Christmas how much Iwish I owned a Range Rover. She smiled andsaid, “one day, dear, you’ll see, one day.”Which is why, that this Christmas, after manybeautiful and hard moments in our life, andall the hard work of my adored husband(who deserves every part he owns of theDefender), I could not stop crying when Irealized my dream came true. My RangeRover is not brand new nor the mosteconomical or most luxurious car but it is mydream come true. In his Defender or in minetogether with our two boys, we feel – likeMike said – “imperial.”Alejandra Ortiz-JimenezSanta Ana, CA[Mike appreciates your comments and yes, still loves his Range Rover Classic as muchas you like yours –ed.]

Dear Rovers North,This note is to let you know we are still aliveand functioning even though we haven’tordered anything recently. We to keep youapprised of our progress in renovating our1963 Carawagon but sadly there has beennone. The “inland hurricane” of August 2007laid a heavy hand on us as it passed directlyover the ranch. We narrowly avoided the lossof house and shop and Land Rover, butdamage to the canyon has been widespreadand severe. Since that first storm we have hadthree others of less magnitude but allfurthered the damage to the “big one.”

We look forward to each issue of TheRovers North News and use it to window shopendlessly.

As an aside, my first Land Rover experi-ence goes back to 1965 during the erection ofa petroleum production facility in the TrucialStates, particularly the sheikdom of AbuDhabi. I had two company cars assigned formy use, both 109” station wagons of a ’62-’64vintage, all new and shiny to begin with andwith large low pressure desert tires. At thattime, the old desert hands told me only twotypes of vehicles could survive a year’s servicein the Rub-al-Khali (southern desert); theywere the Land Rover and the Dodge Type Dlight truck. I still enjoy looking through someold slides and seeing my Rover and theTrucial-Oman Scouts military Rovers at work.

Thanks again for The Rovers NorthNews, and you will be hearing from us whenwe progress on our project.Robert and Irene PughLoafers Glory Ranch

Dear Mark,I have had the Winter ’08 issue of the RoversNorth News about a week. It always brings alittle sense of adventure with it every time itarrives. The cover photos of the Fall ’07 andWinter ’08 editions were refreshing indeed. The sight of fresh fallen snow and a Roveralmost lost in the snowdrift – what a sight! Iknow seeing snow in a picture and living withit are two different things, but tell your artdirector (Matt) and editor (Jeff) and yourselfas publisher, great job!

When I see the Rovers North News I doenjoy reading it, especially “Behind theSteering Wheel,” but even after all these years(since I was a boy) Rovers have always stirreda part of me. I never tire of looking at thepictures. The thoughts of restoring the oldIIA that I purchased from you several yearsago, even kept me going through a two yearbout with cancer. In the meantime, it’s youand your dedicated team that keep old Roverson the road.Leighton OggHouston, TX[We’re thrilled to hear of your recovery andwish you continued good health. It’s clearyour II-A is in good hands –ed.]

Dear Rovers North,Thanks, guys, great magazine! Not sure aboutparts yet as I haven’t started on my projectSeries III. I’m currently collecting parts forthe Cummins turbo diesel to replace the 2.25diesel that I killed driving back fromAlbuquerque, NM, to Raleigh, NC (1,800miles – but at least I made it home before itkicked the bucket). Would you guys beinterested in a complete diesel, tranny, andtransfer case that needs a rebuild?Michael WellfordRaleigh, NC[If any reader is interested, we’ll forwardyour email address to them –ed.]

Dear Les and Rovers North,I bought a Katydid pocket filter 10 years agofor the price of $400. It came in a box withLand Rover 110 on it. It seems like a waste ofmoney, but an important item to have whenyou are outdoors all the time. I now have a

109” diesel. How many real Land Roverowners use their trucks as they wereintended for, and carry around a product witha Land Rover on the box that they really use?The only ones I’ve seen are pictures frommagazines, key chains, and cyberspace. I’mwilling to bet two Sightings coffee cups.Brendan RiedmullerWaynesboro, PA[For 60 years now Land Rovers have proventheir versatility – it’s hard to say just “whatthey were intended for.” But as the famousBBC Top Gear program noted, “Land Roversare always doing something important.”–ed.]

[Christopher Berdy practices law and lives with his family inBirmingham, AL.. To break the boredom, he entertains himselfwith his 1970 Series IIA 88” SW. Here’s his tale of getting more outof his Rover –ed.]

Spring is my favorite time of year…warm days, cool nights, fishing, camping, and my son’s T-ball games. Unfortunately, in Birmingham,Alabama, a blistering summer always interrupts a too short spring.

For a Series Land Rover owner in the South, the heat-retainingproperties of an aluminum hardtop prove to be a highly unattractivequality in the sweltering summer months. While I laugh at thedebates over the “Kodiak v. Smiths” heaters on Rovers North Forum,I find little humor in running a 38-year old vehicle with noair-conditioning and a hardtop in the oppressive August heat. So, converting my 1970 Series IIA 88” station wagon to canvas (calleda “tilt” across the pond) was as much a necessity as a desire.

The Series Land Rover came in many permutations. To keepmanufacturing costs low, the body tub included installation tubes foruse with any hard top, pickup top or canvas top. By 1967, Land Roveris advertising its lower-priced canvas top model as “the Land Roverconvertible.” You were urged to roll up its canvas top “at the first glint

of sunshine.” Never mind that the framework of aluminum hoops, stays and rails were either “on” or “off,” or that the thick canvas topcan barely be removed and folded away – the conversion to a soft toptransforms the car.

I ordered a full “hoop set,” canvas top, gutter rails, windscreenrail, door seals, and tie downs from Rovers North. As I had astandard rear door with two side hinges, I also bought a tailgate, seals, and related hardware. After sorting out and separating thedaunting number of parts, I armed myself with a socket set, a smallcrescent wrench, several flat-head screwdrivers, a drill, tin snips, visegrips, and my not-so-fun-to-use rivet gun.

In some thirteen years of ownership, the previous owner of myIIA had never removed the top. Although I had heard horror storiesof Series owners cracking their windscreens while trying to detachthe hardtop, its removal (and detaching the rear door) went withoutincident. For a change all the bolts – the two behind the front seats, the two on each side of rear tub, the stretch of them across thewindshield – came apart easily and smoothly. Lifting it off wasanother matter; it was not a one man job.

After installing the front and rear hoops, I fitted the side ties andthen the middle hoop. For the middle hoop, I used a large vise grip

to draw it to the side ties’ connecting points. After mounting thewindscreen rail, I connected the drain channel door post to the large“tabs” on the front hoop. I then bolted the triangle-shaped cornerbrackets (Part No. 345821/22) to the gutter rails, leaving the nutsloose on the corner brackets. After tightening up the entire assembly,I added door seals to the drain channel door posts and to the gutterrails. This required the drilling of a lot of holes and strenuous use ofthe rivet gun.

I also installed hoop brackets at the base of each hoop (Part No.304301), and I mounted front tie downs (Part No. 330578/79) to thevehicle sides just beneath the front hoop. The tie downs requiredrilling two holes each and further use of the rivet gun. Finally,I mounted two tie down staples to the windscreen rail and two to therear of the vehicle to tighten the canvas to the hoop set.

I started at the front of the vehicle and looped the webbing striponto the windscreen rail and gutter rail’s “teeth”. With the sidesof the top draped down, I tucked the edge of the canvas siding intothe flange on the drain channel door post. I wrapped theinterior-mounted strap around the front hoop and fastened theinterior buckle.

After draping the canvas down over the rear of the vehicle,I pulled the two long straps down and tied them off with the two reartie down staples. Inside the vehicle, I then pulled the two long strapshanging down by the rear bulkhead toward the windscreen rail andtightly tied them off at the two tie down staples.

I mounted two horseshoe-shaped rear tie downs (Part No.345699) over the tail lights for tying off and tightening the canvas withthe four pre-cut lengths of rope included with the top. Whilethreading the rope through the canvas is not difficult, it took somepatience. For the sleeve on the top of the canvas’ rear flap, I tapedthe rope to the end of a broom handle, allowing me to “push” itthrough the sleeve. With the canvas on, I hooked the rope under theside and rear hasps, respectively, and then tied them off at the rear tiedowns over the tail lights.

While it’s not essential, I plan to apply a healthy coating ofCanvak to enhance the durability and waterproofing of my newpurchase. I also plan to install some wooden dowels into the canvas’sleeves to make the sides straighter and easier to roll up. While I likethe traditional look of the rope, I will probably replace them withsome bungee cord making it easier to secure the canvas to thevehicle, particularly in the wet. To help the top retain its shape for along time, it’s helpful to really cinch down the top in wet weather andlet it dry, tied down tightly.

Needless to say, with my soft top on, I am thoroughly enjoying thecool spring weather. Not only is it breezy, but I can roll up the sidesand still have shade. Of course, few vehicles draw more attentionthan a Series Rover with its soft top down or sides rolled up.

[15 years ago, Louise Orlando and Andrew Barbour, Cape Charles, VA,spent a year driving a 1960 Series II Land Rover from London to

Cape Town. Their adventures formed the basis of Andrew’s writingthe Fodor’s Guide to South Africa. In this article Louise recounts her

love affair with one of Land Rover’s true classics –ed.]

We’re stuck again, buried up to the axles in fine Sahara sand inthe middle of a minefield. Our convoy of vehicles, 23 in all, hasbeen abandoned by our Moroccan military escorts at theno-man’s land separating Western Sahara and Mauritania. Nowonder. A 50-kilometer-wide minefield spreads before us, andthe shifting sands obscure the tracks of any other vehicles.Blowing winds have uncovered some mines, but who knowswhat others lie buried just beneath the surface?

Our fear is compounded by the fact that we keep gettingstuck. On its own, our SWB Series II can traverse the soft dunes

with little problem, but we are towing a heavy trailer. Each timewe bog down, we have to pull out the sand mats, unhitch thetrailer, dig ourselves out, then turn the Land Rover around andhaul the trailer clear with our winch. We have a sneakingsuspicion that we will die out here, either blown to bits by amine or because we simply cannot force our way through thedeep sand. I look over at my then- boyfriend, Andrew, as heunspools the winch cable for the 15th time. “Whose bright ideawas it to drive a vehicle the length of Africa?” I ask, knowing fullwell that it was mine.

It all started about 14 months earlier in San Francisco, where we were living. After a particularly bad day at work, wetreated ourselves to dinner at an Italian restaurant, drank a lotof wine, and convinced ourselves that we should quit our jobsto travel overland through Africa. It made sense at the time.Wine does that to you.

Of course, we didn’t get from the wine to the desert easily. In the days that followed, there was a lot of discussion abouthow we’d travel. Andrew wanted to backpack. I wantedmotorcycles. But when we rented the movie Born Free, Iinstantly knew that we had to drive through Africa, for no otherreason than that I had fallen head-over-heels for the Land Roverthat Elsa slept on. Who cares that the movie was 30 years old? Ineeded that car. Andrew thought I was nuts.

Thus began my search. Within three weeks I found ourLand Rover. The ad read: 1960 Series II Land Rover, mintcondition, 32,000 miles. I called. A man named Scotty (yes, hewas Scottish) answered. I drilled him: Is the car really in mintcondition? Does it have any rust? How big is it? Could I drive itacross Africa? Laughter filled the phone. My face glowed red. This guy thinks I’m a fool, I thought, but instead he started

Page 21: Summer 2008 Rovers North News

21

talking about how strong a Land Rover is, that its age wasactually a benefit because it was so easy to fix, and that it wouldcarry us the length of Africa and back. Before I realized it, wehad plans to meet over the weekend. Andrew thought that I hadgone soft in the head. What did we know about cars? We werecity folk. We were editors, for God’s sake! I rarely drove, had noidea how to drive a stick shift, and had never put my head underthe hood of a car.

Oh, but it was love at first sight. My eyes glazed over, myheart skipped a beat. She was beautiful—classic Land Rovergreen with a white tropical roof. Andrew was smitten, too. TheLand Rover cupid drilled us both through the heart with ahypoid-filled arrow. We leaped at Scotty’s suggestion that wetake it for a test drive, but we lost courage when he mentionedthe need to double-clutch into second gear. Double-clutch?Instead, Scotty did the honors, while we piled into the front seatnext to him.

I sat in the middle, with my legs draped over Andrew. Scottystarted her up. She purred. He put her in gear and we were off.He demonstrated double clutching, low range, and high range.Andrew listened to Scotty intently, but it all flowed over me - Iwas simply trying to control my excitement. What the heck wasthat smell? It was an aphrodisiac. You know exactly what I’mtalking about. It’s about as far from that new car smell as youcan get. It’s the lovely aroma of hypoid and lightly fried Lucaselectrics.

Scotty operated his own Land Rover repair shop, so wemade an offer for the Series II that included mechanic lessons, spare parts, and a roof rack. For the next three months, we

tackled one major maintenance job each week. But somethingwasn’t quite right. Scotty addressed almost all his commentsabout mechanics to Andrew, leaving me as note-taker. I halfexpected to be asked to make coffee. I know cars have longbeen the domain of men, but I was damned if I was going to bepassenger on this adventure. Put simply, Scotty was going toshift gears, double clutch himself, so to speak, and teach me. Tohis credit, he made the adjustment without grinding gears.

Soon enough, my nails were as black with grease asAndrew’s. Over the ensuing weeks, Scotty gave me a crashcourse in Land Rover repair, including how to change theexhaust-manifold gasket (how cool was that!), adjust thebrakes, and replace the generator with a marine alternator.I skinned my knuckles removing stubborn bolts, covered myselfin oil, and sported an array of unsightly bruises.

Meanwhile, Scotty advised us on the tools, spares, andequipment we would need on our journey, everything fromspanners and ratchet sets to rear axles (a potential fieldweakness on Series Rovers, we discovered) and high-lift jacks.

As the list of our equipment grew longer and longer,it became clear that we were facing a serious space problem. The roof rack was off limits—we planned to pitch our tent upthere as protection from both animals and people—leaving noroom for our 10 jerrycans or second spare wheel.

The inside of our 88” was already full. We had built twolarge, lockable wooden boxes to fit snugly inside the back of theLand Rover. The boxes held our food and medical supplies, clothes, camera equipment, laptop, and key spare parts. Wehad smaller plastic storage bins with tight-fitting lids stacked

Page 22: Summer 2008 Rovers North News

22

inside each large box. For extra storage we clipped some oldGerman army rucksacks to the roof joints. Worried still aboutexpedition storage, we ended up buying a trailer from Scotty:the back-end of an old Series II fitted with a metal top and atowing mechanism. It was a real brick.

To help us get some off-road experience, Scotty alsointroduced us to a Northern California Land Rover club. Whenthe club members heard of our planned Africa adventure, theyinvited us to join them for a weekend camping trip in Nevada. We agreed nervously. For starters, it was only our second timecamping. We still didn’t own any gear (we rented what weneeded). Secondly, the club’s members all seemed to have oddnames like Bugman and Fire Guy. What were we getting into?

Land Rover enthusiasts are a breed of their own, and thisclub was no different. They were an incredibly diverse group, with one thing in common: They were passionate aboutLand Rovers. Suddenly, we found ourselves among people(all right, all guys) who took parental pride in the Land Rover’spropensity to leak oil, and who looked fondly upon theeccentricities of Lucas. They were prepared to embracethese shortcomings because they had learned through

hard experience that the Land Rover was the best off-roadvehicle in the world, bar none. And these guys liked to test theirvehicles.

They led us into the high desert of western Nevada, wherewe didn’t see another soul for three days. Hardly surprising. Our little convoy sought out the roughest tracks and rockytrails en route to secluded hot springs, dry lakebeds, andawe-inspiring grandeur. That weekend, the club memberstaught us how to drive off road, when to use high and low range, and at what angle we could go without tipping. I learned how tohang off the side of the car to provide extra ballast, clear trailswith a pick axe, and select the best angles of approach. Whenone of the Land Rovers pitched sideways down a steep bank, the guys were almost giddy to see how our PTO-drivenKoenig winch would work (like a champ).

Ours was the oldest Land Rover on the trip—the otherswere Series IIIs—and the club members were divided overour plan to drive it through Africa. Most felt that it was greatto see a Series II being used for its original purpose. In theeyes of a couple of guys, though, our car was a classic, something that should be babied and exhibited at car shows.

Page 23: Summer 2008 Rovers North News

23

We had every intention of babying her, but we were going to use Africa toexhibit what she could do.

The weekend with the Land Rover club filled us with confidence andknowledge. The guys kept telling us that we’d never encounter roads as bador as treacherous as the ones we had just conquered. They repeated whatScotty had said during our first conversation: “This car will get you acrossAfrica and back.” On our final evening, encamped on a dry lakebed at 9,000feet, the club members built a huge bonfire. With a great deal of ceremony, they presented Andrew with a Land Rover cap that had been passed from oneowner to another over the years. And to me they gave a pick axe, lauding meas one tough bird for planning such a trip. Now toughness is not somethingI have ever been accused of, but I suppose they weren’t used to having awoman along. Their wives and girlfriends wanted nothing to do with theirsmelly, noisy Land Rovers.

Returning to San Francisco, we finalized our plans. Usinggiant Michelin maps of Africa, we traced a route that would take us on a giantS-curve through the continent, working our way from Morocco through theSahara into West Africa. From there, we would head east, through the junglesof the Congo to Kenya and Tanzania, before turning south again toward CapeTown and South Africa. We had obtained all the necessary paperwork, bought all the supplies. All that remained was to put our Land Rover on aship for London.

For the last time, I checked our nine-page, single-spaced list of suppliesand equipment. Then we drove our girl down to the docks. Waving goodbye,I felt almost sick (It’s a car, for God’s sake, not a child!). If I had knownthat we would be stuck in a minefield within a few short weeks, I wouldprobably have never let her go.

[Eric Evans, Naples, FL, owns an ex-MOD 109” and a Defender 90,as well as this proud Range Rover. He most recently contributedan article on his Land Rover experiences in Iceland –ed.]

Ty Schmidt is an old friend and former co-worker at the Disneyenterprises here in Florida. One day last year he called me with some“big news.” He and his family had decided to make a lifestyle changeand move from their home of many years in Charleston, SC to thewestern slope region of Colorado. Ty called me for two reasons: first, because I had spent a lot of time living and playing in Colorado, hewanted recommendations on suitable places for his family to maketheir new home and secondly, and he wanted to know if I could takein his ailing 1988 Range Rover Classic.

My buddy Ty had owned this Classic for nearly 4 years. The Range Rover had served, somewhat faithfully, as his dailyaround-town driver, never making lengthy trips or transporting himmore than a few miles at a time. Ty clearly cared more aboutfunctionality than appearance for this Range Rover had definitelyslipped into a state of decline. Present and accounted for were all theytypical failings of a Range Rover of this vintage – rotted floorboards, rusted wheel wells, countless broken switches and sporadic electrics, ratty interior, strange odors and multiple mechanical issues that had

rendered the vehicle un-drivable. Prior to her last trip “around theblock”, she had been diagnosed with a blown head gasket and sentpromptly to the neighborhood garage for repairs. My definition of“neighborhood garage” in this instance is “a local automotive repairfacility that has not ever seen or worked on the likes of a Land Roverbefore.”

Despite a successful head gasket replacement, subsequentattempts to get her running again were unsuccessful. The RangeRover was parked and left in the back corner of an equipment rentalcompany compound, where it sat until I took her in.

Six months later, I find myself knee deep in two Land Roverprojects; more suspension and performance upgrades to my D90 andcontinued renovations on my ex-MOD 109”. All the while, I wonderwhat I might do with this Range Rover now that, but for thepaperwork, it belongs to me. Having no space for yet another Rover,I started brainstorming. The solution? Give it to Benny, my father inlaw. Benny had recently retired and had caught the Land Rover bugwhile joining me at the 2007 Florida Land Rover Club Spring Rallyein Osceola. I must admit; this seemed like an odd time to become aLand Rover enthusiast. At the Rallye, my D90 fried her own electricalsystem due to a failed voltage regulator in the alternator, nearlyblowing the Optima Battery out from under my seat. Despite never

Page 27: Summer 2008 Rovers North News

getting to off-road at that event, Benny remained a Land Rover buffand I was certain he would be up for the challenge of bringing thisRange Rover back to life.

All restoration or refurbishment projects become much longerprocesses than originally intended, and this effort ran true to form.Benny’s first task was to clean her up. He spent the entire firstweekend completely stripping the interior of all non-essential items. What remained was two front seats, a modified dash/center consoleand a whole lotta body rot in the floors, wheel wells, kick panel andmore. This unwelcome discovery prompted several days of cutting, grinding, sanding and patching to achieve something that wasacceptable, if not concours.

The long list of typical Rover woes would not surprise anyenthusiast who has purchased a neglected Range Rover or Discovery. In the past, someone had elected to seal the sunroof with marineadhesive instead of clearing out the clog-prone drain tubes. This hadapparently been a long-standing issue, as the drive gears and motorwere nearly corroded to pieces. The solution: completely remove thesunroof assembly and install a new “moon roof”. This was achievedthrough the use of low end Home Depot style plexiglass! Smear on alittle 3M sealant, run a few self-tapping sheet metal screws through etvoila - instant moon roof.

At the end of the “cosmetic phase,” we turned our limitedmechanical skills to getting this beast running well for its first off-roadevent. Our deadline was the Florida Land Rover Club’s Spring Rallyein Richloam.

First on the list was to sort out what had, or more accurately hadnot, been done to the engine, ancillaries and tuning. Changing the oiland filter, installing new spark plugs, cap, rotor, and ignition coil gotthe truck running but only on starter fluid – not a good idea – andthen only for a few minutes at a time.

We found that multiple sensors, including critical oxygensensors, were not connected. Part of the throttle assembly was alsomissing. We even found that the transmission “kick down” cable hadbeen disconnected, which explained the weak throttle response andtop speed of only about 20mph. During this rebuild, an English friendstopped by to review our efforts (it’s great to have a knowledgeableEnglish friend when working on a Range Rover). He spurred us on todeeper investigation. Use of a timing light helped us uncover that thedistributor had been installed nearly 180 degrees out of position(“Hello, friendly neighborhood garage?”). A few turns of thewrenches and suddenly she ran like a top! Thank you Darren Oakes– long live England!

Absolutely jubilant, we could not wait to get to the fun bits, likea snorkel and CB radio! Our hopes were crushed at the sound ofrunning water – coolant, to be more precise. A seemingly unendingstream of it was running off the top of the transmission all over thedriveway. My first thought, after “what the F@$&,” was “how is thispossible?” Straight to the phone I went; I sought advice from Darren, then a friend who is a Land Rover tech on the East Coast and finally,Art Limacher at Rovers North. The consensus was that a blown valleypan gasket was allowing coolant to literally pump out of the back ofthe top half of the engine.

If you follow the repair rate manual, it’s a four hour-job. ForBenny and I, it may have well have been 4+ days – time we did nothave if we were to make the Florida Land Rover Club Rallye. Time fora helpful bodge, in this case, a product called Blue Devil. Thisunbelievably expensive ($60 per bottle) goop looks like nothingmore than window cleaner. Its label claims it will repair anythingfrom a radiator pin-hole leak to a cracked block. Never having beenone to buy such miracle products, I reluctantly suggested to Bennythat we give it a try. The directions read as follows: drain the system, remove the thermostat (presumably to keep it from gumming up),refill with water and Blue Devil and run for 1 hour or until the leakstops. It was a good thing that we had resolved the distributor issueso that the truck would even idle for an hour. To our amazement, afteronly 20 minutes our former Geyser was gone! That’s worth everypenny of $60 in my book.

With this behind us, we focused on finishing some more of thefun stuff. We scoured Home Depot for vacuum hoses, drain clampsand PVC pipe fittings to create a do-it-yourself snorkel for about $30.It looks more like a periscope than a snorkel, but hey, it works (atleast we hope it does). We also installed an old pair of 2” lift Old ManEmu heavy duty springs that had been on my Defender 90 until arecent upgrade. The lift provided not only a taller stance, but moreroom for 235/85/R16 Kenda Klever All-Terrain Tires ($105 each).

For the final touch, I purchased lots of earth tone spray paint fora cool camouflage look modeled after the pattern on a shirt fromBass Pro Shops. Not only did this make the new beast look cool, butit covered up an aftermarket paint job that we had come to refer toas “Pimp My Ride Apple Green Metallic.”

We christened the Range Rover, The Cammo Evolution, and itmade a very successful showing at the Club Rallye. She ran flawlessly, despite the discovery of nearly 4 quarts of water in the engine oil afterbeing stuck in a particularly deep water crossing (maybe a DIYsnorkel is not the way to go). She even conquered several obstaclesthat stopped my Defender 90! Fellow Florida Land Rover Clubmember Ed Poelsma was so taken by the Range Rover that hedonated an awesome brush guard to us.

At the end of the day, today’s Range Rover Classics are a realoff-road bargain. Granted, ours was free. After freight, repairs, tiresand miscellaneous parts, this trail-proven Land Rover only set usback about $2,000. The true cost of the entertainment it provided inrefurbishment and driving – priceless!

There’s nothing like seeing a long line of trail-equipped Land Rovers approaching you. That is, of course, unless you are in a long line of Land Rovers heading directlytowards them.

That summed up the challenges presented by Mother Nature at this year’s MaineWinter Romp, held from February 15 – 17. Yes, it will snow in New England duringthe winter, but there’s such a thing as too much snow. Under sunny skies and chillytemperatures, the 60 Land Rovers attending – from as far away as Ohio andPennsylvania – found themselves bogged down in deep snow and winching outconstantly.

The trail leaders worked quickly to change the convoy routes, but it meant thatnew turnarounds had to be created in the woods [waist deep snow in some areas] topermit vehicles to exit successfully. The sounds of winches turning, tow straps yankingand shovels shoveling rang through the woods. Despite the many hours of hard work[or waiting], spirits never flagged and everyone who could pitched in to help – eventhough we never did get to the lunch break clearing.

Many of us spent a lot of time running winch cable and rope and making certainthat safety never took a back step to expedience. While some heavily-kitted outvehicles found themselves stuck, some very stock vehicles [Discovery II, Range RoverClassic] proved themselves very capable. Novice drivers received a lot of hands-oninstruction and learned a great deal about the extraordinary capability of their Rovers.

Where Series Rovers used to predominate at this event, most enthusiasts now runtheir Range Rover Classics, Discovery I and IIs, and of course, their Defenders.Organizer Bruce Fowler drove 50% of the Series Is present; a few Series IIAs fromOhio [driven, not trailered], New Brunswick and Maine stood out for their rarity.

My ’66 IIA, largely stock, powered me through some fine icy sinkholes and evenhelped yank out others. This was great for my passengers, a toddler named Sophie andher father, Tomas. She only complained when we had to stop and seemed to enjoy thepummeling and rumbling down the trails. No wonder – her father and I spent our daygrinning over another wonderful weekend in the snow.

Swamp coolers evaporate water, cooling the air much like air condi-tioning. I was 19 when I first learned of swamp coolers. My late intro-duction is due to the fact that I grew up in the relatively humid climateof Vermont and swamp coolers function best in dry climates. Rightaway I was intrigued by the low energy consumption and relative sim-plicity of the swamp cooler: All you need is air flowing through adamp cloth. This simplicity saved the day during a heat wave last Julyon a road trip from Vermont to Utah, when I decided to fashion aswamp cooler of sorts; evaporative cooling made all the differenceand so I am sharing my discovery to cool fellow A/C-less Rover own-ers in hot dry places everywhere.

My buddy Buck and I had just crossed the Colorado Rockiesheaded towards Salt Lake City on I-70. Like many Rovers, mine lacksA/C and so I prefer to relax in the shade of a swimming hole by dayand drive at night, but chances had us stopping to see a friend inMoab in the oppressive mid day heat. On this particularly cloudlessday, my TDI Defender resembled a convection oven and I desired A/Coh so badly. Seeing as proper A/C was out of the question, Buck andI got to thinking of using evaporative cooling to slow our melting. After all, we had plenty of fast moving dry air and gallons of water toevaporate. In essence we wanted to create a swamp cooler inside myRover.

Upon conceiving the idea of a swamp-cooled Rover, Iimmediately imagined a tank of water above the windscreen with adrip feed down to a wicking material behind my dash vents. In fact,Buck is a mechanical engineering student (which I understand is bitof a rarity for someone named “Buck”) and so we kicked the design

idea around a bit. Granted, this design could create a bit of a wetmess in the dash area, but it couldn’t be any worse than the healthyamount of water ingression through my dash vents in a hard rain. Theidea seemed promising so we even called a few Rover gurus to sharethe genius and the idea was well received. In the end we concludedthat the project had promise but it wasn’t going to keep us fromexpiring in the near future.

It was time for immediate action. Buck held the wheel (I-70 ismind-numbingly straight and deserted at this point) while I took myshirt off. Buck then emptied his water bottle onto my shirt and stuffedit into the mesh behind my open dash vent then repeated with his shirtin the passenger vent. We closed all the windows so the only aircoming in was through our cooler and waited patiently… for maybeten minutes. While the idea had promise it was ultimately considereda failure due to the seemingly slow or non-existent cooling effect.Unwillingness to wait was fostered not only by the increased heat fromclosing windows but also the uncomfortable sticky sensation of hotvinyl seats our bare backs. We proceeded to try several variations ofopening and closing door windows, sunroof and side windows, all tono avail. And so the experiment was canned and Buck held the wheelagain while I put my shirt back on.

While ultimately a failure, the experiment was encouragingbecause I enjoyed a few cool minutes as the last of the waterevaporated from my shirts and we learned much.

It seemed airflow was all-important; when the windows wereclosed the cabin really turned into a sauna. It seemed the dash ventsfailed due to lack of airflow and so a new plan was hatched: we would

suspend wet T-shirts in the open windows. After exploring severaldifferent means of T-shit suspension this concept was also abandonedas nothing we could make while driving proved sturdy enough to holda T-shirt in the 80MPH wind.

Frustrated and incredibly sweaty I looked back at Buck’s dogTreker panting his tongue off behind us. All of a sudden I got the urgeto pour some water on his fur. Then it hit me! I dumped my water bot-tle all over my head and the swamp cooler turned on immediately. Forthe first time all day I was experiencing a comfortable operatingclimate, a bit clammy but nice and cool.

Buck and Treker promptly followed suite and bothcommunicated approval. After protecting our intellectual property bybeginning the patent process, we came up with the catchy name TheSwamp Cooler Shirtâ and began discussing variants. We found that aturban-style application of The Swamp Cooler Shirtâ was great forreducing the typical drivers arm tan line. Disclaimer: When usingThe Turban Cooler Shirtâ it is important to apply copiousamounts of sunscreen. Do not use for more than 15 minutes ata time. Keep The Turban Cooler Shirtâ high on head to ensureadequate vision. Misuse can lead to burns, serious bodily injuryor even death. Must be 16 years or older with a valid driverslicense, registration, insurance and waterproof seats to operate.

After our great discovery, we proceeded to Salt Lake City incomfort. Buck, Treker and I went our separate ways. A week laterwith I met up with a few friends and we drove south to the GrandCanyon where we did a self supported 16 day raft trip down theColorado River. I was in a kayak and had the ability to dunk my headin the cold water whenever the 110+ degree heat go to me, but Inoticed many of the rafters wore what looked like a bandana aroundtheir necks. Upon inquiring I learned that the bandanas had a built insponge for evaporative cooling. The whole practice looked a greatdeal like my patented Swamp Cooler Shirtâ. Then I remembered thatI had seen the same trick done with wet canvas over a metal canteen. It seems we had reinvented a cooling method likely used forthousands years.

The real question is, why had did I endured countless miserablyhot hours behind the wheel when I had all the tools necessary to coolmyself? The answer is simple: We are modern men drivingsemi-modern automobiles. Our adaptation to the convenience of A/Chas made us forget the simple ways of doing things. And so I suggestthat if you find yourself Rovering in the dry heat, try a littleevaporative cooling!Happy Travels,

Where did you grow up and what brought you to Vermont?I grew up about twenty miles north of New York City and moved toBurlington, Vermont to attend the University of Vermont. During mysenior year, something clicked and I felt like I needed to stay inVermont. I really appre-ciate the pace of life andlandscape of Vermont incomparison to the NewYork metro area.

How would youdescribe what you doat Rovers North?I have been working inthe Sales Departmentsince October of 2002,especially enjoying help-ing customers whodepend on their oldRovers as daily drivers. Ican empathize when yourone and only vehiclerequires unexpected service and your life momentarily grinds to ahalt, while all your friends and family look on in completebewilderment as to why you insist on driving an old Rover. In addition, I proof and write articles for the Rovers North News.Working at Rovers North is great, because it allows me to meld myfavorite hobby with a fun work environment.

Describe your most interesting Land Rover experience:Having the dashboard of my 90 catch fire on the way home fromswimming in Lake Champlain one hot summer evening, was rather“interesting” at the time. Armed with a fire extinguisher and a wetbathing suit, I managed to keep the carnage of melted wires andplastic to a minimum. Then there was the time I was stripping thepaint off my 90, using Aircraft Stripper, and ended up in theEmergency Room…

What Land Rovers have you owned? The first Land Rover I owned was a bit of a project…an old hardtop90, in which I installed a 200 Tdi. Here was this worn-out LandRover, sans engine, and I made it my project to rehabilitate it for dailyuse. Up until that time, this was my most involved automotive techni-cal experience, both equally frustrating and rewarded along the way.Once it was on the road, it was my only vehicle. That summer, I droveit just about every weekend to Land George, NY (about a 2-hour drivefrom Burlington, VT), down backcountry roads, to go boating withmy friends from UVM. One late summer afternoon, a camo 1978Series III 109” military pulled in to Rovers North and within a fewdays, I was its new owner and my 90 was instantly sold. I still regretselling that 90, but at the time I had this overwhelming urge to own aSeries Rover. The 109” was fun to drive because every time I gotbehind the wheel, it felt like an adventure; however, it was my only

vehicle and I found myself renting cars to attend a series of weddingsscattered throughout New England. I sold it soon after acquiring my1993 Range Rover SWB this past autumn, which I utilize as a dailydriver today. I just wasn’t using the 109” as much anymore and felt

that it deserved a betterhome. My Range RoverClassic puts a smile on myface whenever I turn thekey, because there’ssomething that makesyou feel special whenyou’re driving a RangeRover Classic.

Which one of themwas your favorite andwhy?I appreciate them all fordifferent reasons. I’vehad many fond memoriesdriving and living with allthree of them. If I had to

pick one, it would be my old 90. It was one of the most reliablevehicles I’ve owned. Being a diesel, it sounded like a real truck. Atthe time I owned it, I lived about an hour from work in NorthFerrisburg, VT and fuel efficiency was paramount. Unlike my 109” itcould keep up with modern traffic on the highway, yet still had avintage feel with its spare tyre mounted on the bonnet. Duringthe summer, I’d remove door tops for the entire season andoccasionally had to deal with sitting in a damp seat when it rained.Prior to liquidating it, I installed a cab top, which made the interiormore comfortable during winter. All my friends loved it and to thisday confirm that I was crazy to part with it.

What activities do you do when you’re not at Rovers North?I am fanatical about owning and maintaining older European cars. From vintage souped-up Alfa Romeos to air-cooled Volkswagens, there have been about sixteen cars that I have employed as fun, quirky daily drivers. I enjoy hiking, snow shoeing, snowboarding, working on my historic condo, music, photography, cooking andwine.

How have Land Rovers influenced your life? After buying my first Land Rover, I’ve always had to have one in “thestable.” They have incorporated themselves into my life in so manyways. For instance, I solely used my 109” to move the entire contentsof my apartment when I bought my condo last summer. It took manytrips to get the job done and I had to take extra measures to ensurenothing got cracked or scratched, given the rough ride ofthree-decade-old military leaf springs.

LAND ROVER: CELEBRATING 60 YEARS AND GOING STRONGGaydon, 30 April 2008 – 60 years ago today, a motoring icon madeits public debut, when the original Land Rover was shown at a motorshow in Amsterdam, on April 30, 1948. The current Defender isclearly descended from that first vehicle, now known as a Series I.Extraordinarily, they even share a couple of original parts, an oil fillerplug and a cleat for tying down the canvas roof. But the rest of thevehicle technology has moved on considerably.

Today, Land Rover goes from strength-to-strength, with afive-model line-up headed by the Range Rover, and record globalsales of over 226,000 vehicles in 2007.

The company recently received an early birthday present, in theform of two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise. The first, for'International Trade', was given in recognition of export sales ofnearly £4 billion per annum to 147 countries, with markets such asChina and Russia driving major growth. The second, for 'Innovation',was awarded for Land Rover's acclaimed Terrain Response system. Atthe twist of a knob, this sets up the vehicle's engine response andtraction systems to maximise performance on all terrains - theelectronic equivalent of having an expert instructor alongside thedriver.

Around the world, Land Rover will be celebrating its 60thanniversary year throughout the summer with a series of specialactivities and events.Success Story

Land Rover is an outstanding British engineering andmanufacturing success story. Its manufacturing plants at Solihull(near Birmingham) and Halewood (near Liverpool) and its R&Dfacilities in the English Midlands, employ a workforce of 8,500 - andthe company helps support an estimated further 40,000 jobs throughautomotive suppliers.

Since the first Series I model rolled off the production line atSolihull, the vehicles created by Land Rover have defined the 4x4market. In 1970, the company introduced what's been called themost significant 4x4 vehicle ever, the Range Rover – the first 4x4 tobe equally capable on-road as off-road. Now, alongside the RangeRover and Defender, sit the Discovery 3 (LR3 in some markets),Freelander 2 (LR2) and Range Rover Sport.

Land Rover's spirit of adventure has been evident from theearliest days. Adventurers, farmers, scientists, naturalists, andoutdoor sport enthusiasts have all used Land Rovers' capability toaccess some of the world's most inhospitable regions. For 60 years,

Thissignals that Land Rover will continue to evolve, with capability, premium values and sustainable motoring at the top of the agenda."

Phil Popham, Land Rover managingdirector, comments; “Sales have been driven by the hugely popularTDV8 engine, especially in Europe, which offers petrol-likerefinement but with 32% better fuel economy.”

The exterior enhancements are focused around the refreshedrear end details, which include body colour finish to the tailgate trim, revised tread mat (on upper surface of rear bumper), addition ofclear-lens rear lights and clear lens side indicators. The new wheel style is complemented with the additionof a shadow chrome finish now available for the first time on theexisting 10 spoke 20-inch Alloy wheel.

The introduction of three new metallic paint colours - SantoriniBlack, Galway Green and Bournville (black with a hint of brown) -further differentiates the 2009 Range Rover Sport.

The desirability of the Range Rover Sport is further enhancedwith the introduction of Noble, a metallic plate finish, on the centreconsole sides, air vent bezels and door pull handles to emphasize theclean architectural graphics of the cabin. As Land Rover enthusiasts, we are all too familiar with our belovedvehicle’s legendary ability to rust. It only takes a handful of saltywinters or playful afternoons wading in the ocean for corrosion tocompletely devalue an older Land Rover. Corrosion doesn’t just sendLand Rovers off to an early grave, it creates the need for many repairs, significantly complicates otherwise quick fixes and diminishes thepride and enjoyment of ownership. Being located in Vermont, one ofthe rustiest places around, we take corrosion prevention veryseriously here at Rovers North. About a half dozen years ago RoversNorth got switched on to Waxoyl Professional and it has provedthe only product that can truly protect our Land Rovers from thewinter salt.

The best corrosion protection for any vehicle is a properprofessional application of Waxoyl Professional, but don’t stop there!Keep an aerosol of Waxoyl Professional handy every time you work onyour Land Rover so you can treat hidden areas that your repairsexpose. “What?” You ask, “shouldn’t the complete professionalapplication protect my Land Rover 100%?” For most vehicles theanswer is an overwhelming yes, but not with Land Rovers.

Unlike a unibody car, older Land Rovers are assembled fromindividual pieces and have a plethora of seems, crevices anddissimilar metals contacting each other, all of which are idealcorrosion traps. While a complete professional application of Waxoylwill prevent virtually all corrosion, the only way to completely treat aLand Rover is to rebuild it with Waxoyl in all the places otherwiseimpossible to reach. Of course the ideal time to do this rust proofingis during restoration, but for many that isn’t an option and so wesuggest making every repair an opportunity to rebuild that sectionwith Waxoyl in all the places that corrosion could start. If you live inor often travel to a rust area, this approach is for you! Its simple, justdo the repair as normal and use an aerosol can to apply Waxoyl whilereassembling, turning every repair into an opportunity to furtherprotect your Land Rover from the never-ending attack of corrosion

The productsWaxoyl Professional 120-4 is typically used to spray inside a vehicle’sbody cavities and chassis. 120-4 has a low viscosity and creeps intoall the hard to reach spots. It is also clear so overspray does not makea mess. The most effective way to treat cavities is using the WaxoylProfessional spray guns and compressed air, but during a repair it iseasy to apply 120-4 on the surface using an aerosol then reassemble. This method provides excellent protection and adds little time or costto a repair job.

Waxoyl Professional Hardwax is the opposite of 120-4. Hardwaxis black and rather than creep and penetrate like 120-4, it is thickand durable. Hardwax is appropriate for areas exposed to abrasion

and particularly well suited for underbody protection. Underbodyapplication with the professional equipment is quick, clean andprecise, but Land Rover owners have been known to tackle the jobwith aerosols. Hardwax also has great sound deadening andinsulation characteristics so it is ideal for the inside of doors, the roofor the hood before installing the insulation.

To make the most of your Waxoyl experience we recommendheating aerosol cans in a bucket of warm water. The ideal producttemperature for application is between 75-95ºF. Applying the productcold can be done, but it does not provide proper coverage orconsistency. Also, when the product is cold it does not mix wellallowing the propellant to escape eventually leaving product in thecan with no way to get out. Which brings us to our next tip: Shakewell! Heating and mixing allows the user to maximize amount ofusable product from the can, leaving little waste. A little goes a longway; a dry film thickness of 0.04 -0.05 mm provides effectiveprotection, so you don’t have to go overboard when spraying.

Waxoyl has long been praised for its ability to “stop existing rustand prevent further rust.” Both products can be applied directly ontop of existing surface rust. Waxoyl bonds to almost any surface andrequires very little preparation before application, but excessoil/ grease and flakes of rust need to be removed to allow t heproduct to reach the trouble spots. Visit the FAQ atwww.Roversnorth.com/waxoyl to learn more about preparing yourvehicle for Waxoyl application.

At Rovers North, we’ve found Waxoyl 120-4 aerosol cans usefulfor the following applications:• Metal to metal mating surface preparation during assembly, such asLand Rover Series/Defender door hinge installation.• Coating electrical connections. Waxoyl is an insulator, displacesmoisture and bonds even in damp conditions.• As a lubricant all throughout our Land Rovers (e.g.: hinges, lockcylinders, window regulators, etc.)• As a cutting fluid while drilling. Not only does it greatly aid cutting, but it keeps the filing from going all over the place, and should theywander they certainly wont start rusting if they are coating in Waxoyl!• As a lubricant for equipment, such as booms, hydraulicpistons, ect.• As a protective coating for yard equipment and machinery duringoff-season storage.

Hardwax is ideal for the following applications:• Touching up areas where rust has popped out on the underbodyor engine compartment.• A quick and easy solution for corrosion that has started on thepaintwork from the outside. Tape off the surrounding area and applyHardwax to contain the problem until it can be properly restored.

• Nuts! Nothing is more frustrating than having a repair come grindingto a halt as you struggle to cut off fasteners bound by rust. Waxoyl is alubricant and a corrosion inhibitor, what could be better for yourhardware?• Just about anywhere else you want a durable anti corrosion/ lubricant!

By keeping a few cans of Waxoyl Professional on the shelf you canchange fighting corrosion from a time consuming expensive overhaulinto a small routine done regularly. The QE I, my ’66 Series IIA 88” SW, never feltsmoother or quieter. No wonder I was sopleased with the tune-up I gave the car.Admittedly, this moment occurred while theRover stood stationary on the deck of theferry, in calm seas. Still, the quietude gave methe time to ponder my Land Rover world.

“As Maine goes, so goes the nation,” is apolitical myth that we trumpet every electionseason. Right now, gas at my island town’sone pump, courtesy of the local fishermen’sco-op, costs a breathtaking $4.27 a gallon. The rest of the nation seems to be in alockstep to keep up with us, although Ibelieve that California might be ahead at thistime. By 1966 standards, my IIA producedexcellent gas mileage at 18 mpg; it’s still pret-ty good for a 4-wheel drive vehicle today. Thatdoesn’t make it cheap, though. Trips I knew Icould make as long as I had a $20 bill in mypocket now require a $50 bill instead. Ask mewhose face is on a $50 bill – I have no idea,I don’t see enough of them to remember.

Those tricks for incrementally bettermileage that you always read about in theBritish Land Rover magazines suddenly don’tseem so ridiculous. Whereas I once pridedmyself in cruising our one interstate at the

speed limit, that seems less important now. Ata stoplight, people behind me should nowplan on it taking a little longer for the lineto get up to speed; I’m not accelerating anyfaster. “Full throttle” will be reservedfor emergencies only. When performed innice weather, tune-ups are actually funto complete.

Whether you own a Series Land Rover, aRange Rover Classic or P-38A, or a DiscoveryI or II, it’s likely paid for or will soon be offpayments. This is a great thing right now asauto loan foreclosures are increasing. Buyersseduced by the new car smell and idolatryfind themselves behind the 8-ball when theywant to unload their cars; too often, they owemore in payments than the sale or trade invalue of the car. We won’t even wonder howyou are supposed to repair or maintain a newcar that requires computer diagnostics whenyour tool box consists of a socket set and ascrewdriver. Anyone seen the hourly rate at adealership recently?

In 6th grade, our teacher administeredan aptitude test that would help determineour academic life and likely career choices. He reviewed the results with each of us; whenit came to my turn, he said, “Jeffrey, I don’teven know how you can turn a doorknob.”You know those unfolded boxes that evaluatespatial relationships? Well, I could neverguess which folded-up one was the correctanswer. He advised me, strongly, never to relyon my mechanical abilities – I would developnone.

Some of my repair and maintenanceexperiences would verify the results of this6th grade test but for the most part, I’veovercome this shortcoming with a lot ofpractice, a lot of assistance and a great deal ofhumor and patience. I am fully aware that if Ican maintain a Land Rover, anyone can. Buyyour Land Rover once and you can keep it fora long, long time.

Regardless of the increasing costs, I’llcontinue to use and enjoy my Land Rovers.I need them for work and every trip, althoughshorter than before, will be a delight

precisely because I’m in the Rover. Thesounds, smells and tactile experiencesreceived at the helm of a Land Rover stillbring me - and every Rover enthusiast -enormous pleasure.

The New York Times noted that members ofUS House of Representatives can get taxpayersto purchase, lease and operate a car for them– and it’s legal. Judging from the leasepayment amounts listed in the article, apparently there’s no cap on how big a leaseyou can take out. “Buy American” doesn’tseem to apply, either, although it’sundoubtedly politically expedient.

If you’re a Land Rover enthusiast whowould like a new Land Rover, this might be agreat time to consider a bid for a seat in theHouse of Representatives in your state. Sure, you have to spend time in Washington, DC,but there are a lot of Land Rover enthusiaststo help you break the tedium of hearings onarcane legislation. Why attend staged eventswith people who don’t really like you whenyou can join the fascinating people who areLand Rover enthusiasts for a convivialevening?

It might be a bit late to launch a bid for2008 but talk to your local Land Rover dealernow in anticipation of the 2010 and 2012elections. Line up the Rover you want now; wecan’t wait to pay for the perk!

does look and sound quite used up. Thatmight explain the email I received from“Queen Elizabeth’s the II Foundation,”located on Woodlands Road, LeatherheadCourt, Leatherhead, Surrey, UK.

The “importance notice” came to mefrom Mrs. Rainor Neske, who parsimoniouslyuses a Yahoo account for all the foundation’sbusiness. While the Foundation was createdby the Queen herself, the European Unionand the Economic Community for WestAfrican States now seem to support and fundthe organization.

I hate to brag but the Board of Trusteeshas selected me as a “final recipient” of acash grant/donation for my own “personal, educational and business development.” Iwas quite chuffed – she must have read mycolumns – until I read that my selection cameabout as “a result of the random selectionexercise of internet websites and millions ofsupermarket cash invoices worldwide.” Well,at any rate, one million pounds awaits me assoon as I send in my personal information.

I think I’ll just have them send the checkto my account at Rovers North. I’ll start on thecomplete restoration of the car shortly; I’msure that Rovers North will call as soon as thecheck arrives.

2008 marks the 15th year that I’ve edited TheRovers North News. With the completion ofthis latest issue, I’ve now written over 100columns and articles for the magazine, andhave easily edited another 200 written bycorrespondents. What started for me asquarterly newsletter has grown into ahandsome magazine.

I grew up with automotive mags, courtesy of my father, who would get them forfree at his business. It staggered me thatpeople could get paid to drive new cars, writeabout them, and have fun with them for aliving. But in those dark old days, it seemedthat you had to move to Michigan, New Yorkor California to work for an automotivemagazine. Yuck!

In the late 1970’s and 1980’s, I workedas a free lance writer for newspapers and hada few automotive articles published, but Icould not break into enthusiast publicationsoutside of club newsletters. The more I droveBritish vehicles the more I wanted to writeabout the experience.

I finally achieved my dream of LandRover ownership in1991 with thepurchase of the QE I.By 1993, it hadracked up a lot ofmiles and the enginesounded like Ihad downloaded theringtone for “JingleBells.” Not good. Itsounded terriblewhen I gave a talk inPeacham, Vermont,so I called RoversNorth, at the otherend of the state andasked for advice.“Drive slowly and ifthe noises get worse, call a tow truck.” TheRover made it. A ringjob also replaced thepistons and emptiedmy bank account. Iwent up to the firm’spresident, MarkLetorney, and asked

“do you need a writer for your newsletter”By good fortune, he did. So I wrote my firstarticles and a year later, when the editor leftthe company, I took over that post.

It was a leap of faith for Rovers Northand a heaven-sent opportunity for me. I’vegone from camera-ready photos and copy tothe internet and have benefited from theprofessionalism of the Rovers North staff.Equally satisfying are the connections I’vemade with Land Rover enthusiasts in the USand around the world. We’ve publishedarticles from all corners of the US, introducednew writers and columnists of all ages andLand Rover experiences. What we share incommon are the experiences that Land Roverautomobiles make possible for us; let’scontinue as Land Rover celebrates its 60thbirthday this year.

DISC BRAKE KITS / SERIES II, IIA, III 1960 ON

Now you can install the latest Defender disc brake components ontoyour trusty 88” or 109” Land Rover and enjoy amazingly quick andcontrolled stopping power. Front kits are based on a new hubassembly and new swivel ball housing, cast from ductile iron with aminimum strength rating of 80,000 pounds per square inch, this kitis an engineering masterpiece. The front caliper mounts are cast intothe housings, just like Defender, to handle the massive 4 pistonDefender calipers that grab 12 inch vented Defender discs, just likethe NAS 90 enjoys. Timm’s rear conversion kit uses the same hubassemblies with solid Defender rear discs and 2 piston Defender rearcalipers. Using all Defender brake components, as well as wheelbearings and seals, means easy service, easy parts availability in thefuture, and adds directly to the value of your Land Rover.

These kits are designed to work with an 88” or 109” dual powermaster cylinder available on Land Rovers manufactured from 1969through 1984. For owners with early single non-power systemmaster cylinders, you will need to convert to a dual power mastercylinder. This conversion involves installing a vacuum port into yourintake manifold, installing a dual power pedal box assembly whichhouses the dual master cylinder, vacuum servo unit and brakelight switch. This pedal assembly is larger in size. It will requiremodifying your wing top, splashguard mount, and installing a SeriesIII style splashguard. You will then need to re-plumb your clutchmaster, and install additional brake lines to complete the dual circuit. You will also have the option of adding in a safety failure junctionvalve, with or without warning light, and choosing betweenhydraulically or mechanically activated brake lights. These parts canbe found in our catalog or on our website in our Series III brake

section. We also have available a good selection of second hand dualpedal box assemblies. Please contact us for assistance, and moreinformation on improving your brakes. We’re here to help.

Our Timm Cooper Front Brake Conversion Kit includes 2 newfront swivel housings with new seals and retainers, 2 new hubs withwheel studs, new hub bearings and seals, 2 new 4 piston front brakecalipers, 2 new vented brake discs, new brake pad set, 2 newflexible brake lines, gaskets, all necessary hardware, and detailedinstructions prepared by Timm Cooper. This is a bolt-on conversionthat requires no drilling or fabrication.

Our Timm Cooper Rear Brake Conversion Kit includes 2 newhubs with wheel studs, new hub bearings and seals, 2 new rear brakecalipers, 2 new solid brake discs, new brake pad set, 2 new calipermounting brackets, gaskets, all necessary hardware, and detailedinstructions prepare by Timm Cooper. This is also a bolt-onconversion that requires no drilling or fabrication.

It’s possible that, in the 15 years this Editor hasreviewed the Sightings, we’ve received moreSightings than this issue, but we doubt it. LandRover enthusiasts of all ages throughout NorthAmerica kept a sharp eye out – or an ear cocked– for any use of a Land Rover to embellish aproduct or improve a sound. The result was thelargest number of Sightings ever.

Once again there are superb entries thatwarrant emptying more of the crockery cup-boards at Rovers North. As always, it's helpful forrookies to review the rules for Sightings - anduseful as a reminder for the grizzled Sighting vet-erans as well.

Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognitionand our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug.We reward only those Sightings that capture theunique qualities of Land Rovers and theirowners, and display them in a distinctive way.

Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not reallysurprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and youwon't get a mug. We're delighted, but not sur-prised, that Land Rovers appear in British televi-sion programmes, British publications, filmswith British themes, and shows about Africansafaris. You shouldn't be surprised, either, andshould consider looking for other ways to get acoffee mug.

Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date beforepublication we close off the Sightings. If we'vementioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, wewon't mention it again. If you're new to thefamily of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may nothave seen your Sighting in an earlier issue.

Rule #4 - We're not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, please remember - one mug perSighting per issue.

Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Roverreferences in books go to our Literary LandRover editor for mention, but only when spacepermits.

Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't read your nameand address because of atrocious penmanship,we can't recognize your Sighting nor send youa mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember wecan't send a mug by e-mail. Send us your realname and shipping address, too.

Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, theEditor admits he might make an error. Let meknow if you think you've been jobbed, but alldecisions of the Editor are final.
