Welcome to the third installment of Robison on Rovers in the RoversNorth News.

Many of you have read my posts on the Rovers North and DiscoWebbulletin boards, and some have corresponded with me on various topics. For those who don’t know me – I manage J E Robison Service –on the web at www.robisonservice.com – an independent Land Roverspecialist shop in Springfield, Massachusetts. I’ve worked continuouslywith Land Rovers since their re-introduction to North America somefifteen years ago. In my column, I can answer your questions atgreater length than is possible on the bulletin boards. Each issue, I willtake on a few of the interesting questions I receive or will address atopic of interest to Land Rover owners.

I am a longtime Land Rover owner. I’ve had many Land Rovers over theyears, and currently have a 2000 Range Rover P38A, a 1996 Discovery I,and a 1966 Series. My father has a 1995 Range Rover Classic, and mybrother has a 2003 Discovery II. So we’re a Land Rover family.

If you have questions or issues you’d like discussed email:[email protected]

________ P ________

Last winter I purchased one of the Superchips™ performance kits fromRovers North [exclusive North American suppliers for Superchips™;prices vary by vehicle type – at time of installation a Superchip for a4.0 liter P38A was approximately $500.] and installed it for evaluationpurposes in my personal 1997 RangeRover 4.0SE. It’s an otherwise stocktruck with 140,000 miles on theodometer. I drove it 7,500 miles onthe Superchip for this article.

The Superchip upgrade discussedhere is available from Rovers Northfor 1995-1999 Range Rover P38Aswith GEMS engine management,1996-1999 Discovery I models, and1997 Defenders. A chip upgrade fornewer Land Rovers is in final testingand will be available soon – look forupdates in my columns later this sea-son. Robison Service installs the fullrange of Superchips products.

I was always looking for a little morezip from the 4.0 liter engine, and thischip provided it. Installation was easy, and I saw immediate benefits. Thereis a noticeable improvement in takeoffresponse and midrange power. The4.0 now drives much like a 4.6. The truck is generally quite a bit moreresponsive. I’ve had several other 4.0 drivers try my Range Rover, and theyhave all had the same reaction. I would recommend this upgrade for any-one looking for a little more power from their Range Rover.

How does the Superchip get more power from the motor? I talked for quitea while with the folks at Superchips about this very thing. North AmericanLand Rover engine controls are programmed to tolerate poor fuel, poorupkeep, and poor driving habits. They do this with very conservative pro-gramming of the engine management. The Superchip programming takesout a lot of that slop. You get more power, but it becomes much moreimportant not to neglect your Land Rover’s care and feeding. They usemore timing advance, which gets more power, but you have to be sure youonly run premium fuel. They deliver more fuel on initial takeoff, but it’svital that you stay on top of oil services, because engine loads are higher.Superchips have made many small adjustments to fuel delivery and ignitionthat add up to (according to them) nearly a 10% improvement in power atmost speeds.

I expected gas mileage to decline if power went up, but that did not happen.Over two long tests (5,000 miles) my fuel economy remained within ± 0.4MPG, sometimes being better, other times worse. I conclude that the powergains are from increased efficiency, not from increased fuel consumption.

In cold weather I noticed a different idle behavior. I noticed a faster idlewhen cold. Otherwise, there was no difference in how the truck started orran.

The Superchip system is slightly less forgiving of wear on other system com-ponents. For example, the Superchip ECU gave faults on my truck for slowO2 sensors. The standard ECU showed no O2 faults. However, on a manualtest, I found the sensors were near the end of their service life, so Ireplaced them. After that, the Superchip ECU was fine. My point here isthat when you install a performance chip, it may show up other weaknessesin your system, and you should be prepared to deal with that. Don’t justassume there is a chip problem if you get a check engine fault right afteryou put the Superchip in.

To install the chip, remove the GEMS ECU and take off the cover. Youshould do this work on a (conductive) metal table and wear an anti-staticlead to avoid damage. On the circuit board you will see the EPROM cov-

ered by a plastic cap. Remove the capand the EPROM, and then fit the newEPROM. Be very careful fitting the chip– it’s easy to bend the pins, and if youinstall it backwards you could damageboth the chip and the ECU.

Once the chip is fitted and the ECU isassembled and fitted into the P38A, you will need to use a ROVACOM,Testbook or similar diagnostic system to reset the security interface betweenthe engine ECU and the securitysystem. The truck will not rununtil this is done – so if youdon’t have the ability to performthis step – don’t start!! CallRovers North for the name ofthe nearest shop equipped to dothe installation for you.

In the remainder of this month’scolumn I have answered somequestions at greater length thanI was able to on the bulletinboard

________ P ________

Where can I get service information for myLand Rover online?

Many enthusiasts, including myself, discuss Land Rover issues on the RoversNorth Bulletin Board. Here’s a link to the Range Rover/Defender/ Discoveryboard: http://catalog.roversnorth.com/wwwboard/w3bbrrframe.htmlIf you need specific repair information you should be aware that Land

Rover has established an official site, www.landrovertechinfo.com, whereyou can obtain all the factory service documentation for your vehicle atmoderate cost. They offer daily, monthly, and annual subscriptions startingjust over $25. It’s a real bargain for full access to the factory archives. Thissite is limited to North American market Land Rovers from 1987 to thepresent day. Here are some of the things you can access:

• All workshop manuals• Electrical troubleshooting manuals• Component overhaul manuals (for example – transfer cases)• Service bulletins• Parts information• Descriptions of recalls• Training materials on most systems – fuel injection, ABS, etc.

The Land Rover site was established in conformance with new Federal lawsrequiring them to provide everyone (not just dealers) full access to all serv-ice materials. You can find similar sites for other car makes at the directo-ry of the National Auto Service Task Force: http://www.nastf.org/

________ P ________

What do I have to do to install one of the inex-pensive new short blocks in my older RangeRover? I am speaking here about a 1995 orolder Range Rover Classic with the 14CUX fuelinjection.

Installation of a newer block in your Range Rover is pretty straightforwardwith these points kept in mind:

The new block does not come with a timing chain, timing gears, or acamshaft. I suggest you install a new cam, chain, and lifters when fitting anew short block. You will need a cam for a 1990-1995 engine as the newercams do not have provision to drive the distributor. The 1994-’95 enginesuse a serpentine fan belt and an oil pump embedded in the front cover.1993 and older motors use individual fan belts and an external oil pump.Get a cam that’s correct for the year of your vehicle, and swap the frontcover from the old engine. The cylinder heads should have a valve job whenever they are off, in my

opinion. I suggest you surface the heads .020 and use the later model headgaskets (they are thicker.) When you install the heads you will note that thelowest row of head bolts is no longer used. Land Rover found that thosebolts caused uneven stress and they deleted them from the block.

You should use the newer intake and valve cover gaskets from Land Rover. The newer rubber parts are less likely to leak. Also, don’t forget to use newcylinder head bolts. The bolts stretch on installation; they are not meant tobe re-used. They sometimes break when used twice, necessitating a time-consuming tear down.

Be sure you use thetiming cover gasketthat matches thecover actually fittedto your engine. Thecovers have oil pas-sage holes in differ-ent places – fit thewrong gasket andyour oil pump maynever prime. The oilpans are sealed to

these newer blocks with sealant, not a gasket. Land Rover and we recom-mend a product called The Right Stuff from Permatex. It’s expensive, atnearly $26 a tube, but very effective, and is available from Rovers North. The less expensive RTV sealants sold in consumer auto parts stores aremuch less effective and in some cases don’t work at all on oil pans. I high-ly recommend the Right Stuff.

You will need a spacer at the end of the crank pulley because the end of thecrankshaft on the newer motors is longer. Rovers North or Robison Servicecan supply the spacers, or you can make one locally.

________ P ________

Is there a vibration problem with the newerengines used in Land Rovers?

In 1999 Land Rover began using a new Bosch engine management system. One virtue of this system is that it allows trimming of individual cylinders toensure that each cylinder makes an equal contribution to the running of theengine. This might be thought of as “precision electronic balancing.”Because of this new technology the balancing of the new shorts blocks is nolonger done to the tighter tolerances required by the former engine man-agement systems. In addition, the newer Bosch short blocks were designedto be used with different harmonic balancers and flywheels, so their inter-nal balancing is a bit different.

Consequently, if you fit a new short block to an older truck you may noticea different vibration or a different “feel” to the engine. The differences Ihave observed have been most noticeable from 1,200 to 1,800 RPM.

Most owners of automatic transmission Land Rovers will not notice this dif-ference. It is more noticeable in standard shift trucks. It’s not a terribleproblem – it’s simply a difference someone attuned to their car may pickup on.

________ P ________

I’ve been told my Land Rover’s engine has adropped liner. What does that mean?

Land Rover V8 engines use aluminum blocks with pressed-in steel liners. At the factory the liners were pressed in and machined off even with the topcylinder head sealing surface. In some engines the liners were not pressedin far enough, or they were not retained at the bottom. In either case, theliners begin to move up and down. When this happens there is often ahard-to-identify rap from within the motor.

With time the movement allows coolant to begin leaking from the passagesthat surround the liner over the top of the liner and into the cylinder. Whenthat happens you get coolant coming out the exhaust, and exhaust gasesmay pressurize the cooling system excessively and cause overheating.

I have seen some trucks with knocking and loose liners run 20-30,000miles without coolant failure, while others fail right away. The most com-mon liners to drop are those for the two driver-side rear cylinders. Theonly cure for this problem is a new short block. Land Rover has droppedthe price of replacement short blocks (see my winter column) in responseto increased dropped liner complaints.

Dropped liner failures are often associated with overheating incidents –either because they caused the incident or because the overheating causedthe liner to come loose. As a result, you should take any overheat or near-overheat situation very seriously. Never drive for long periods with aclogged cooling system and the needle near the red. Never drive at allwhen the gauge is in the red. Not even for a mile to get off a highway. Theprice of neglecting this rule could be a your motor.

Speaking of road-going Range Rovers, it’s true – normal coil springinstallations give a softer ride. Why? Because they have a taller rideheight and a softer spring rate. What does that mean? Here is asimple explanation.

An air spring is, as the name implies, filled with air. The more youcompress it, the harder it gets to push because the air is more andmore compressed. If you have an air spring that’s six inches tall, and you compress it to three inches, you will have doubled the pres-sure within and doubled the force needed to compress it farther. Soif it takes 200 pounds to compress it one inch, it might take 600 lb.to compress two inches, and 1000 lb. to compress three inches. Asteel coil, in comparison, would usually be more linear, taking 200pounds to compress one inch, 400 lb. two inches, and 600 lb. threeinches.

You can see from the above example how a jolt is felt more sharplywith the air springs.

The steel coil springs fitted to Range Rovers are fairly soft and fairlytall. Therefore, they can soak up a good-sized bump. In highwaymode, the air springs have much less ability to soak up a big bump, and the difference is really noticeable.

________ P ________

Should I be using Dex-Cool antifreeze inmy new Land Rover in view of the prob-lems I’ve heard about?

Land Rover specifies Havoline Extended Life Coolant (the orangecoolant) for all Bosch-engine Land Rovers. According toTexaco/Havoline, this is a DexCool formulation as stated in thisquote from their web site: “Havoline Extended Life Anti-Freeze/Coolant is recommended by General Motors Corporation, which hasbeen factory filling with DEX-COOL antifreeze since 1995.” Therehave been many reports of problems when Dex-Cool is left in cool-ing systems for long periods of time (more than 3 years or 36,000miles.) At this time there are several class action suits allegingproblems stemming from use of Dex-Cool in GM cars. Land Roverrecommends changing your Dex-Cool coolant every three years or atevery 30,000 mile major service. If you follow that service intervalthere is no reason to expect cooling system trouble.

We believe in using the manufacturer specified fluids in most cases.DexCool and traditional green coolant are both ethylene glycolbased, but the additive packages are different. Test results areinconclusive – you may have cooling system trouble if you switch. Therefore, if you have a Land Rover that was factory filled withDexCool we suggest you stick with it. But to be safe, we suggestchanging the coolant every two years regardless of mileage, or every30,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Coolant manufacturers have told us you are much less likely to havecooling system trouble if your system is kept full. That means mak-ing sure your expansion tank is always kept topped off to the fullmark. The coolant needs some space to expand, so the tank can’tbe filled to the brim. There is risk of coolant deterioration if thetank goes empty and the level in the radiator drops. Another thingthat can cause trouble is low pressure. You get low pressure whenyour system has a leak or when the cap fails. When your truck isrunning make sure the hoses feel hard with pressure. If they feelsoft, you may have a pressure problem.

24-hour Stoppage in JanuaryMembers of the Amicus trade union at Land Rover held a 24-hourstrike from 6 am on Monday, January 26 in rejection of the compa-ny’s pay offer.

In October, 2003, car workers at both Solihull and Gaydon LandRover plants voted overwhelmingly to reject the offer of six and ahalf percent, to be phased in over two years. In December they votedby ballot for strike action in protest. Amicus members claim that thecurrent Land Rover offer will not give them pay parity with col-leagues working at Jaguar plants, which belong to the PAG alongwith Land Rover.

January’s strike represented an escalation of union action, followingthe introduction of an overtime ban in December and withdrawalfrom the operating time flexibility agreement effective from January5, 2004.

Duncan Simpson, Amicus National Officer for the Motor VehicleIndustry, said “It’s with reluctance that we’ve moved to strike actionbut we hope the company will rethink their position and agree tonegotiations. We’ve said we are prepared to meet the company atany time without preconditions. The ball is in their court.”

Amicus has 2500 members in the two Land Rover plants. TGWU andGMB trade union members at the plants took strike action at thesame time.

Last Discovery panels from SwindonIn mid-January, an announcement was made that the BMW pressingsplant in Swindon would be looking to shed 330 jobs over the nextfew months through natural wastage. The reason was that its con-tracts with Rover and Land Rover to produce body panels had cometo an end.

The Swindon plant has been manufacturing body panels for the cur-rent Discovery, and it is this element of the Land Rover operationwhich is affected. The plant has been making and will continue tomake some panels for the Range Rover.

News from Bluewater Adventure ZoneThe Land Rover Adventure Zone at Bluewater was closed temporarilyduring January for repairs. Two areas were suffering from the con-stant pounding meted out by vehicles taking visitors around thecourse. The see-saw had been taken out of commission, and theconcrete at the base of a steep descent had started to break up.

However, the Adventure Zone is now back in commission and prom-ises business as usual.

In fact, business is slightly different from usual. In the beginning, therides around the zone were provided by Discoverys. Shortly beforeChristmas 2003, Range Rovers were introduced on the 45-minutedemonstration ride which tackles a challenging course coveringseven acres of Kent cliff-side and boasting four different themedzones.

Since its opening in June 2002, the Adventure Zone has given over11,000 visitors an off-road experience they will never forget. Theretail complex is also home to a Land Rover Gear store, where visi-tors can complement their driving experience with branded clothing, outdoor equipment and tailored off-roading adventure holidays.

In December, the Adventure Zone at Bluewater scored yet anothersuccess when it received the Best Leisure Marketing Campaign of2003 award presented by Property Week.

Bill Welch, marketing programmes manager at Land Rover, said:“We are delighted with the award and look forward to welcomingmore new visitors to the Adventure Zone in 2004. It gives visitors achance to experience the adventure side of Land Rover, while alsoseeing our vehicles’ unrivalled off-road ability.”

“We had a date all set, “ said a Land Roverspokesman, “but this has changed things and wedon’t currently know when the last V8s will be made.”

ROVACOM LITE: Diagnostic Software for your Land Rover

national network for Land Rover owners in locationss with no club sup-port. Rovers North assisted clubs with event support and with its ownannual rally that drew hundreds each year to Vermont.

Until 1993, Rovers North couldsupply Land Rover enthusiasts’needs through expert support forthe Series I-II-III vehicles, a fewFC 110s and some grey-marketRange Rovers. Then came theintroduction of the Defender 110NAS, just 500 of them, followedin 1994 by the Defender 90.With the end of the Range RoverClassic in 1994-95, anotherenthusiast’s option was opened.Thousands of enthusiasts foundthey could enjoy the camaraderie of Land Rover ownership without thethreat of [pick one]: divorce, significant others moving out, hearing loss, back brace, greasy clothing. The fact they could drive at 80 mph in safetyand style added to their enjoyment of their experience. The end of theDiscovery Series I model in 1999 gave another opportunity for enthusiaststo step into Land Rover’s legendary off-road capacity without taking a timemachine back to the 1960s.

Safety legislation, emission controls, and the additional technologicalcomplexity of all automobiles meant that Rovers North would grow withthe times, too. My '66 Series IIA has 3 fuses, and one of them is a spare.A Range Rover P38A has over 60 fuses and relays in the engine areaalone. Whereas electronic technical complexity once ended with the volt-age regulator, it now extends much further. Rovers North determined thatif it was to remain the premier parts source for Land Rover enthusiasts, italso had to remain the technical center for Land Rover enthusiasts, too.The extended range of Land Rover products called for technical trainingof Rovers North specialists and it continues to this day. The technicalcomplexity of Land Rovers meant that many owners preferred to haveprofessionals work on their Land Rovers using Land Rover Genuine Partsor Rovers North ProLine parts; Rovers North responded by buildingstronger relationships with specialist shops nationwide.

In the 1990s, club growth exploded throughout the U.S. and Canada asnew enthusiasts sought to enhance their experience through public eventsand rallies. Knowing how to use your Land Rover daily, on and off-road,

was essential. RoversNorth trained staff mem-bers at the Land RoverExperience in England, became certified LandRover off-road instruc-tors, and ran an off-roadschool for novice andexperienced off- roaders.

25 years after its found-ing, the Rovers Northuniverse differs greatly.

Product knowledge, avail-ability and experience would require a deepcommitment to the ever-changing productline. A few thousand different parts couldkeep LandRovers in tip-topshape in 1979;now, the breadthof model offer-ings and thecomplexity ofcontemporaryLand Roversrequires RoversNorth to thinkin terms of tenthousands ofparts. BringingLand Rovers toVermont wasnot enough; Rovers North took Land Rovers up the auto road on MountWashington one winter and to Baja California one summer.

Rovers North still enjoys the daily contact with enthusiasts, whether bytelephone or over the internet. Land Rovers still appeal to interesting menand women who bring their enjoyment of fine engineering and personal

challenges to the daily use of their vehicles. As with all businesses, theautomobile enthusiast world has undergone dramatic changes and allenthusiast companies will be challenged by visible and yet-to-be-seentrends and business realities. Rovers North still believes that enthusi-asts benefit from quality parts, technical knowledge, experience andthe heritage that comes with every Land Rover. If the next 25 years areas exciting as this first 25, we’re in for a great time!

25 Years of Rovers North, continued

At last, a professional diagnostics system for Land Rovers is available fromRovers North at an affordable price! ROVACOM LITE gives you the abilityto pick and choose specific software diagnostic modules you require (orcan afford), and you only pay for those needed. If you need to use addi-tional modules, it only takes a moment to download the code and accessthe module.

More than just a scanner, ROVACOM LITE gives you the ability to not onlyread and reset fault codes, but also cycle hardware devices outputs (i.e.,lights, door locks, windows, etc), read system settings, and change/cali-brate where appropriate. ROVACOM LITE performs the same functions asother Land Rover diagnostic systems priced at over $10,000. The systemperforms diagnostics for 1987-2002 Range Rovers, Defenders andDiscoverys (with a Freelander module coming soon). New vehicle modelupgrades (as available) are easily downloadable to your system.

With ROVACOM LITE, the user simply connects their PC directly to theROVACOM LITE vehicle server with a serial cable. The ROVACOM LITEvehicle server is the small silver box in the picture, which, as you can see,is quite small. The vehicle server is then connected through the vehiclecommunications interface (the small black block in the picture) directlyto the vehicle’s diagnostic socket using the relevant lead. The server, powering itself from the vehicle’s diagnostic socket, is then able to com-municate directly with any of the vehicles systems that have diagnosticcommunication capability.

To find out virtually anything about the vehicle, or to command a vehiclesystem to perform an action, the user runs our vehicle explorer softwareon their PC, and clicks on standard style text links, such as “Read thecurrent settings”, “Read the fault code memory contents”, “Clear the faultcode memory contents”, “Wind the window up”, or any one of many hun-dreds of possibilities. The vehicle explorer software then sends therequest to the vehicle server, which is directly connected to the vehicle. The server, which usually keeps active communication with each vehiclesystem, then instructs the vehicle system to perform the task required andobtain any returning information, which it sends back to be drawn by thevehicle explorer through its direct connection.

Included below are some questions and answers about ROVACOM LITEthat will help provide a better overview of the product and its applica-tions.

________ P ________

I am very interested in the ROVACOM LITE. However, if I purchasethe basic system and then decide I need to add a software mod-ule, how long will it take to arrive? For example, can I downloadsoftware modules off the web and pay with a credit card?

When you purchase the hardware, you will get a CD ROM with all serversoftware modules installed that we make. The CD may be a few weeks outof date, so you can always check the version numbers of the ones youhave against our online versions and download any new or updated ones. These modules are transferable to the vehicle server, which also comesfully loaded as well.

The clever bit comes in that the server will not allow the running of anymodule or its later updates unless you prove to it that you have purchasedthe license for it. This is done with a special activation code. Naturally, there is an anti-guess mechanism in place. Suppose you choose to buy thelicense for SM01 GEMS, either when you buy the hardware or any othertime. You will pay the fee shown, which can be by credit card or othermeans. As soon as we get authorization or cleared funds, we release aspecial activation code that you have to type in only once. After that, theserver will run any GEMS software module or later version.

So, you actually already get the software itself on your system, and as aregistered owner can freely download improved or added ones. It is only if you want to communicate with a different vehicle that you mustpurchase the proper license for that vehicle.

How does ROVACOM LITE compare to its big brother ROVACOM?Basically, is there any LOSS in functionality by going to theROVACOM LITE version? I have the demo of the ROVACOM andhave seen it (ROVACOM) in action at some UK dealerships.

The ROVACOM LITE can do everything a ROVACOM does with respect to accessing features and functions of vehicle systems. ROVACOM LITE mere-ly refers to the impact on your wallet and the expected usage of the system.

The main differences are that the ROVACOM LITE design is of a lighterduty, with separate components required. Although this makes ROVACOMLITE a bit more complicated to connect, it gives it much more flexibilityin terms of the degree of expandability. ROVACOM LITE is available forpurchase in much smaller and cheaper modules and is ideal for individ-ual owners, enthusiasts and smaller specialists with less frequent require-ments for diagnostic equipment usage.

ROVACOM is a very heavy duty, all-in-one single connection unit, whichfeatures simple touch screen input for maximum speed of use. It isdesigned specifically for frequent use by specialist independents, is moreexpensive, and the software modules are grouped together by vehiclemodel. ROVACOM is a professional tool, which is designed to be used fre-quently in harsh environments, usually by someone other than the personwho paid for it.

I am extremely excited by the ROVACOM LITE. Could you pleasetell me the PC system requirements to use it? Could this work ona Mac iBook using Virtual PC?

I am not sure about the iBook as the software has to communicate direct-ly with the ports and I don’t know how the virtual shell will cope. In anyevent, inexpensive, even used, laptop PCs are readily availabe. Obviouslythe faster the better, but you really only need something stronger than aPentium I running at 150 MHz, with a few megabytes of hard disk spaceand enough memory for the normal operating system. As for operatingsystem, any 32 bit one will do.

Some very new notebooks don’t actually fit a standard serial port any-more. Although not as desireable, USB to serial adapters may be used. These adapters are fairly inexpensive, but because they take time to setup, it is better to try and obtain a system with an existing serial port. Weare going to add an adapter to our accessories range soon so one can beordered with the system.

We will produce an alternate connection eventually, but this will more likelyto be Bluetooth or Wi-Fi based to coincide with the release of a PDA versionof our vehicle explorer software. You also need to have Microsoft Explorerversion 5.0 or higher installed, but as we include this on the installationdisk anyway, if you don't have it already that is not a problem.

Is ROVACOM LITE compatible with Windows XP?

Yes.

Installing new wiper blades just before winter and another new setfor spring is the absolute best way to make sure you retain a clearwindshield all year. UV rays, acid rain and air pollutants wreakhavoc on exposed rubber elements, shortening the life of wiperblades. If you live in snow country, extreme low temperatures usu-ally cause the wipers to freeze and become less flexible. Using win-ter blades helps, with a protective cover keeping the ice off. Eitherway, nothing beats a fresh set of wiper blades for clear driving.

By Jeffrey B. Aronson

[Rovers North’s partner in print, Land RoverEnthusiast, sponsors the world’s largest Land Roverrally at Billing every year. You’d expect RoversNorth to be there. Here’s the second part of our cov-erage of this mammoth event -ed]

Near the center of a few thousand acres of LandRovers, Land Rover Enthusiast had a massive tentfeaturing magazine and enthusiast products, as well asa separate tent housing the hugely popular Land RoverCafé. Along the with a Starbucks at Heathrow, this wasthe only acceptable cup of coffee that I found in all ofGreat Britain. The LRE and Land Rover Café tents satbeside over 175 other tents and displays.

They weren’t alone. Land Rover clubs also packed theevent. The club displays included: The Land RoverRegister [1948-53], The Series I Club, the Series IIClub, The Series III and 90 and 110 Owners Club, theAssociation of Rover Clubs, the Camel Trophy OwnersClub, the Freelander Club, the Ex-Military Land RoverAssociation, the Range Rover Register, the ForwardControl Register, the Lightweight Land Rover Club, theDiscovery Owners Club, and the 101 Forward ControlRegister.

All 19 rows of tents and displays ringed a centersquare of grass where David Bowyer, off-road instruc-

tor, winch expert, and genial host served as Master ofCeremonies every day. An endless stream of entertain-ment entered the central green daily, from clowns andLand Rover-on-spoon races for children to falconryand sheep dog demonstrations for adults.

The delight of an event like this rests with the peopleyou meet, in this case, from all over the UnitedKingdom, Europe, Africa and North America. I had thepleasure of spending the days with Land Rover enthu-siasts Barry Enis, Kent, CT, Jim Pappas, Parsippany, NJ,and Brian Neeley, Attleboro, MA. And while wanderingthe fields, I met up with Paul Von Klosst-Dohna, fromThousand Oaks, CA. Paul already owns a ‘71 SeriesIIA 109” SW, a ‘95 Range Rover Classic LWB, and a‘97 NAS Defender 90, but he flew over to find aForward Control 101”.

Series IEvery known model of Land Rover was represented bya club, whether national or regional. The club displaysshowed off every possible variation in the 55 year his-tory of the marque. Fancy yourself an expert on SeriesI Tickford Station Wagons? Four sat at the Series IClub display, loaned out by their owners just for theevent. The four, all in the correct Bronze Green, rep-resented the full range of condition, too, from unre-stored original to fully restored and primped. LandRover’s first effort at a fully enclosed people carrier, this model failed because of its high price, a combina-tion of the coachwork body and the government’s pur-chase tax.

I wandered around in awe, peering inside the vehi-cles. The only one I had ever sat inside was a pre-pro-duction model owned and restored by KenWheelwright, who has vast experience and expertisewith Series I prototypes in England. Did I wish to sitinside this totally original example? I did, thank you,and settled inside of a 51 year-old vehicle. Given thatdoors and a top were optional extras on the Series I atthe time, this was a revelation about the directionLand Rover could take with their design.

As I sat wondering how a Land Rover that cost 900pounds sterling must have seemed in an impover-ished, post war England, up came two Frenchmen,Guillaume Vilaceque and Jean-Paul Laenen. Betweenthem, they own the only three Tickford station wagonsin France. Speaking in my finest 4th grade French, they patiently listened to and answered my questionson the Land Rover scene in France. There’s a Frenchmagazine, called Land [available in Canada -ed], ded-icated to Land Rovers, and of course, active off-road-ing events and activities. Guillaume also owns aDefender 130” and Jean Paul operates a business

called The Land Rover Doctor. Our discussions driftedfrom Land Rovers to the terrible state of coffee inEngland, which led to an invitation to share breakfastwith them at their camp site for properly preparedcoffee. The lure was powerful, but finding their camp-site among the thousands of enthusiasts camping atthe show – now there was the problem. As we parted,I thought “this is why you come to Billing.”

Camel TrophyLand Rover made an effort to clean up the CamelTrophy for eco-friendly customers by creating aFreelander version of the event, but the heart of theCamel Trophy beats fiercely in the less-televisionfriendly events of the 80s. The crowds in front of theCamel Trophy club display told Land Rover all theyneeded to know, if they bothered to observe.

The Camel Trophy Owners Club demonstrated thattheir display occupies a lot of their thoughts and time.In front of a semicircle of Camel Trophy vehicles, eachidentified with a placard, the roof only of a Defender90 [oddly never used in Camel events -ed] sat, tippedforward, in a mud hole. The top has illuminatedlamps attached to the roof, and the arm of a man-nequin [I hope -ed] rises from the window to therooftop. It is angled bonnet first into the mud. A nylontow strap rises from the buried hood over the top. Forall the world it appears to be a Camel Trophy vehiclethat has sunk into a quagmire. It’s a brilliant displaythat attracts an endless stream of admirers. The 20

vehicles on display also attract a lot ofattention with their full kits of gear andexplanatory placards on each year’s CamelTrophy. Camel vehicles included those thatran Chile, Argentina, Mongolia, and theMundo Maya were on display, as well as thelast and most recent Freelander model.

Land Rover CaféI admit to a bias towards this group for tworeasons: one, Rovers North carries thismost excellent coffee, and I once taughtLatin American history at the University ofVermont. Even the most jaded curmudgeonwould twitch a forced grin underthe charm of this Costa Rican con-

tingent. Oscar Escheverria, a lumbering bearof a man, lives in San Jose, Costa Rica, where he’s the official importer and distribu-tor of Land Rover, MG, and Rover automo-biles. His firm, Motores Brintanicos De CostaRica, stepped into this position because hisfamily’s business involved him in coffee pro-duction – no surprise in Costa Rica. Theircoffee drying machinery managed to dry cof-fee beans at lower temperatures, effectivelyprotecting the flavor of the beans, and it tookthem to numerous places where Land Roverstoiled daily. The firm, started by his grandfa-ther, also knew that more prosperous farm-ers would make for more prosperous suppli-ers, so they sought ways to market coffee other thanas a mass commodity.

The Land Rover was a critical piece of machinery onthe farm, so Escheverria reasoned that if he couldmake Land Rovers more affordable, productivitywould rise and profits might follow, for the producersas well as his firm. As he noted, “I want coffee pro-ducers to feel more in control of their market, of theirworth, and of their equipment. Land Rovers and coffeeproduction are very closely linked in my country.”

The mountainous nature of the coffee regions of CostaRica mean that Land Rovers are essential; as Oscarexplains, “the plants in the high altitudes really pro-duce the best coffee.” The coffee served at Billing, called “Land Rover Café,” lived up to its, err, billing, and not just because the rest of the coffee at pubs inaround Billing could be best called “swill.”

Visitors to Costa Rica have remarked on the numberof Series Land Rovers still operating in the country.New Defenders and Range Rovers are also sold rou-tinely, although the Discovery has not quite found aneasy niche. They’re not inexpensive there, but as nec-essary pieces of equipment, are highly regarded andwell maintained. To help farmers out, Escheverria alsostocks used parts through a subsidiary company. WithOscar’s friends Rodolfo and Omar staffing the Cafeand providing endless good cheer, no wonder thou-sands of people drank a lot more coffee in Englandthat weekend.

Forward Control 101sA Forward Control 101” does not appear often in theU.S.; when you come across a herd of them, you haveto stop short. Those we see in North America usuallyfeature canvas tops. In England and in Europe, 101soften become campers – rugged, handsome, non-annoying Winnebago clones. Hugh Billington,Daventry, Northampton, bought his 1977 Forward

Control when it was demobbed in 1996. It came with10 coats of paint and dogtags from regiments. Withpetrol prices at around $6.00 per gallon, he’s alsotaken the popular step of an LPG conversion.

Another great example, this one from South Africa, featured two PTO winches, uprated non-Rover seats, and a clever soft top arrangement with a solar panelfor power. You also saw a pop-up top and pop-outtables for elegant dining in the field. There’s even abuilt-in bed for luxurious camping. The inner portionof the camper, resting on the frame, is actually a por-tion of an old caravan. The 101” is named“Doodlebug.” If you ever thought, yuck, camping, youhaven’t seen a 101” set up this way. If the spouse orthe significant other has opposed outdoor events, whynot purchase a 101” for them?

Military Land RoversWhen I think of military Land Rovers, ex-NATO 109scome to mind. Or, maybe you think of the formerambulances brought over for sale in the U.S.?Defender versions such as the current Wolf model arejust wistful dreams. Eddie Johnson drove to the eventin a 1979 Series III 109” with a Rhodesian Armyrollover hoop. One of 900 produced for the BritishArmy, this design presumed that armed insurgentsfighting for Zimbabwe’s independence would placemines on the roads. So these Land Rovers have a steelplates underneath and alongside the “gunwales” of thevehicle to protect the car and the occupants. Shouldthe mine go off and flip the car over, the strongrollover hoop should permit it to be rolled back on itswheels and head off back into the fray. Of course, thisbeing a Land Rover, it had to make do with the stan-dard 2.25 motor and no power steering – despite theconsiderable extra weight.

Equipment VendorsIf 10,000 clubs had exhibits, then seemingly 100,000vendors and suppliers of everything imaginable rentedtent space and sought to sell you their wares. Much of itseemed like army surplus gear, camping equipment ofvarying degrees of quality, and accessories that you

would find at any off-road event in the U.S. If you owneda ship or a plane, you could have purchased tons ofused parts for most any Land Rover model. Some vendor exhibits really stood out, and theSouthdown Equipment area merited a lot of visitors.Dave Wilkinson, Zeal Monachorum, Devon, started hisbusiness in 1989. “I was working on a road construc-tion project in North Devon when the company wasexperiencing a lot of track rod damage to its vehicles. Ioffered to create protective plates, and it all started fromthere.” Southdown now produces axle guards, steeringarm guards, and fuel tank guards for most Land Rovervehicles. There’s growing interest and demand for RangeRover Classic and Discovery protective devices, too, andthese have become popular as these older coil-springmodels find themselves as off-roaders of choice.

The Dunsfold Collection – Land Rovers We Don’t SeePhilip Bashall founded this extraordinary collection ofhistoric Land Rover vehicles in 1993. He juggles anannual autojumble, supportive members, public pre-sentations, and tons of accumulated good will to keephis valuable operation solvent. With some volunteerdrivers, the Dunsfold Collection displayed a 30thAnniversary Range Rover, a Range Rover limousine, a50/50 Challenge Defender 110, a gray 110 prototype,a Freelander test “mule,” a Defender military Wolf, and a very early Range Rover. There’s a funny lookingMaestro van, which turns out to be a camouflage bodyfor a Freelander mule. The Range Rover limousine isa P38A model, one of only two produced by LandRover; Phil Bashall loves it.

Near the end of the event, the various clubs all drovetheir representative vehicles to the center ring forphoto shoots and appreciative sighs. Phil Bashall wascalled up for running commentary and enlivened thecoverage. If you have a question about Land Rover’sdevelopment, Dunsfold is a terrific source.

Rovers North in Billing, U.K., cont’d. No Classic Cars,We’re British!

By Jeffrey B. Aronson

During the week of the Land Rover EnthusiastRally at Billing last spring, I wallowed in thevisions of hundreds of Defenders, FC 101s,unique Discovery and Freelander models. Still, something gnawed at me – where were all theclassic British cars? Driving two hours fromHeathrow Airport to a motel in Wellingborough,a town nearby Billing, I spotted one Series LandRover – a 109” – and one TVR Taimar sportscar. That was it for the entire week.

As an unabashed Anglophile, this gave mepause and made me rethink my understandingabout where the expertise really resides to keepBritish cars on the road. It may not be in JollyOlde Blighty, but right here in the good ol’ USA.

I thought about this a lot as I walked the hun-dreds of stalls at Billing. Much of the productavailable was aimed at the Defender, Discoveryor Range Rover Classic models, not at theSeries vehicles. With far fewer off-road trailsavailable, the British manufacturers focus onexpedition, fuel economy or towing accessories.Overseas trips to exotic locales, such as NorthAfrica, Spain or France, attract many enthusiastsin England. With petrol at nearly $6.00 a gallon, anything that helps offset running costs attractsmuch attention from drivers. Diesel enginesoffer much better mileage [how does 35 mpg inyour Discovery sound to you?] but fuel pricesstill feel steep to British owners. Caravanning[trailering] is hugely popular in Great Britainand is the impetus for many 4 x 4 purchasesthere, so towing and camping accessories filledmany booths.

Except for Southdown, the off-road productslooked ordinary compared to what we see fromU.S. manufacturers. Americans feel some newconstraints around off-roading, but we’re quitespoiled compared with our British and overseascounterparts. Our access to trails, fields andopen spaces vastly outweighs what’s available toenthusiasts over in Great Britain.

At Billing itself, I kept asking myself – wherewere all the Series vehicles? We see far moreolder cars at events in the U.S. as a percentageof attendance than I did at Billing. Then it slow-ly began to dawn on me. The Series Land Roverwas designed with the desperately neededexport market in mind. Of the 25,000-35,000Series Land Rovers built every year, most woundup outside Great Britain. That’s what LandRover and Britain needed in the 50’s and 60’s,and the buying patterns continue to this day.The U.S. is the largest export market for LandRover today; if not for the Freelander, perhaps amajority of all Land Rover sales would be out-side the U.K.

Old Land Rover Defenders in Great Britain areloved and admired, but much in the same waythat old Chevy/Ford/Dodge trucks are appreci-ated here. But in the U.S., old Defenders offersomething unique and admirable. Given thelarge number of Series vehicles in NorthAmerica, we may well know more about them, their care and restoration, than do our counter-parts in Great Britain. After all, we really runthem here daily.

That’s why I will buy and continue to buy parts forSeries Land Rovers, Range Rovers, and the rapidlygrowing number of Discoverys here in the U.S.Land Rover Genuine Parts or Rovers NorthProLine parts really do matter for U.S. conditions. The knowledge base for these cars, now rarer inGreat Britain than the U.S., is here. Americansdrive their Land Rovers off-road in American con-ditions far more here than in Great Britain, so itmakes sense that I want to have off-road partsmade for U.S. conditions. The Land Rover V-8, sobeloved by Land Rover enthusiasts, is virtuallyunavailable in Great Britain. Here, it’s our basicLand Rover engine. So, Rule Britannia and all that, but keeping my British icon on the road is a jobfor American expertise.

Billing was the perfect blend of vendor stalls, workshops, and trials.

Not many of these made it stateside: an impressively clean Series IIA.

By Jeffrey Aronson

One reason to remain behind the wheel of a LandRover are the people you meet as a Rover enthusi-ast. Maybe you get the same sensation from othermarques, but I don’t believe it. A few years ago, Iremember parking my Series IIA on the main streetof Camden, ME, on a fall day. As I climbed backinto the car, I peered into the left side wing mirrorand saw a line of Morgans coming down the street.I leaned out the sliding window sighing to myself,“look at all those Morgans.” As I gawked, I heard aBritish voice call out, “Blimey, a Land Rover!” I metan entirely different response when I came across abrace of Ferraris later that year. This group ofMagnum, P. I. wannabes, all outfitted in matchingmarque regalia, carefully averted their eyes as Ipulled into the same service station and drove pasttheir convoy. Too bad – we even share the samepremium fuel. My IIA always pings on regular, too.

So it was no surprise this winter when I drove eastto Bar Harbor for a long weekend. Pulling out of agas station on Mt. Desert Island, I spied an earlyNAS Defender 90 soft top. I was in my TR-7 [seebelow] so, naturally, I missed the Defender at atraffic light. However, I saw it pull into a gas stationso I drove in behind him and beeped. Why not? Weshare the same 5-speed transmission and BritishLeyland once owned both Land Rover and Triumph. The owner turned, saw no Land Rover, and contin-ued fueling his car. I got out to chat. Turns out Ihad met Peter Meyer of Hancock, ME, who pur-chased his quite-used D90 about a year ago. EastCoast Rover helped him find it and sort it out. “Itneeds work but it runs great and I just love it.” Ofcourse, there was a Rovers North decal on the rear.A young guy about the size of a cornerback, Peteoffers proof that there are several generations ofenthusiasts ahead if Land Rover keeps building thebest 4x4xFar.

Pete lives in the same region where the recentlyconvicted Martha Stewart likes to hang out in thesummertime. One of Pete’s neighbors in Hancocksuggested waggishly that “maybe they should sen-tence her up here for the winter as punishment.”

Even Land Rover’s top brass have been fascinatingpeople. In recent decades, Nick Stephenson, LandRover’s managing director during the 50thAnniversary celebrations, took the time to talk withthousands of enthusiasts at the Eastnor Park gath-ering. He and Dennis Chick even gave this writertime to discuss Land Rover’s hope for NorthAmerica. Geof Miller, who along with Spen Kingwas instrumental in the design of the originalRange Rover, was not only accessible but a genuineenthusiast. You can’t say that about all the peoplein the automobile business.

Closer to home accolades have to be saved for BillBaker, who recently retired from Land Rover.Denise McCluagge, writing in AutoWeek, called him“one for the ages.” Baker served in a variety ofmanagement roles for Land Rover in North Americaand Europe, but all involved promoting the LandRover name with style, class and elegance. When Imet him once, he spoke highly and appreciativelyof Rovers North. A skilled off-road driver, Bakerhelped create Land Rover’s Tread Lightly campaignwhich engaged off-roaders in protecting their landwhile protecting their rights to enjoy that land.McCluggage suggests that Baker’s efforts “probablyaccount for the high percentage of Land Rover

owners who actually drive on something morechallenging than the gravel parking lot of the goldclub.” While only 5% of SUV owners overall go off-road with their vehicles, Land Rover ownersscore 35%.

Bill Baker understands that off-road drivinginvolves physical as well as emotional and intellec-tual challenges. Land Rover’s promotional eventsoften gave something back to the places theyexplored. From Iceland to Belize, from Californiato Africa, Land Rovers made positive things happenfor communities worldwide. In 1998, I watchedBill and his family negotiate a tight rutted muddytrail in a then-new Freelander on the grounds ofEastnor Castle. In his last term with Land Rover in2003, he helped launch the newest Freelander onthe trails of Catalina Island off California. DeniseMcCluggage drove on that trip and wrote “...wemay remain ignorant of the bars and T-shirt shopsin Avalon, Catalina’s port-hugging community, butwe can ace the midterm on the [wildlife of]island.” She suggests that “his trips may be emulat-ed but never duplicated. One thing for sure: theywill be remembered.”

I have a question for the Ford people running thePremier Auto Group, or whatever corporate entitycontrols Land Rover this week. I saw the photos ofthe Ford Bronco Concept from the North AmericanAuto Show; it is square, straight-sided, rugged andevocative of the original Bronco. It also looks justlike an existing Land Rover model – oh, nevermind. You probably saw the Hummer H3T concepttrucklet, too. It is square, straight-sided, rugged. asort of Tonka-like two-seater that’s evocative of aLand Rover model – oh, never mind. You know thestir at the SEMA show in Las Vegas when youbrought in the Defender 110 CKD – oh, nevermind. As you’ve told us repeatedly, no one is reallyinterested in a Defender. Lots of other Ford-ownedmarques sell at or above their original sale price ofover 10 years ago. Sold many of those “new”Thunderbirds recently? How about it, Ford? Youdon’t need a concept. You need to federalize the Defender.

________ P ________

On a bitterly cold, clear February morning theGovernor of Maine, John Baldacci, settled into thepassenger seat of his official car, a Chevy Suburban[hey, this is northern New England! -ed].His driver,a state trooper, began the 60 mile drive from ourcapital city, Augusta, to our largest, Portland. About40 miles into the trip on I-95 [like Vermont, wehave only two interstates] his driver passed a car atabout 70 mph and promptly skidded off the road. The Governor and driver had mild injuries but the$45,000 Suburban had become a candidate forJunkyard Wars. They sheepishly admitted that theymight have been traveling too fast for conditions. As writer Cory Farley noted, “sliding off the road isnature’s way of telling you you’re a dope.”

Farley calls the United States “a nation divided byweather.” As a transplanted coastal Californian, headmits he didn’t know the first thing about winter. It took just one snowstorm to teach him the firstrule: four wheel drive is God’s own solution tosteering in slippery conditions. The moment you tryto stop, you learn rule #2: four wheels with notraction are no better than two wheels with no trac-tion. In reality, the weather doesn’t “cause” acci-dents. The driver is responsible for evaluating con-ditions and adapting to them, not pretending thathe can trammel them into submission.

If you off-road in your Land Rover, you’ve learnedthis reality, regardless of whether you live in theSnow Belt or the Sun Belt. Either way, you’re thedriver so you’re in charge. You can ask your Land Rover to seemingly defy physics, but not overcome it.

With the beginning of baseball’s Spring training,I’ve come to an epiphany – Red Sox fans are toLand Rover what Yankee fans are to Fords.

Yes, I know there’s a bevy of Land Rover fanatics inthe Empire State. Land Rover once even had itsimporter headquarters in the City That Never

Sleeps. Face it, no one needed to ask where “Sex inthe City” was taped. It could only be New York.

That attitude pervades New York, whose firms havecome to own significant parts of once-independentcompanies in other parts of the country, such asNew England. It’s no surprise that Ford could pur-chase Land Rover from BMW; after all, the NewYork Times parent company bought an interest inthe Boston Globe, the dominant newspaper in NewEngland.

New England baseball fans north of New Haven, CT,tend to be Red Sox fans [except way up near theCanadian border where it’s easier to get to anExpos game [motto: “The Team That Won’t Die”].We’re acutely sensitive to the ability of New York topurchase whatever or whoever it wants.

So I’m still sensitive to an incident in my ‘66 SeriesIIA SW last fall. Late one night on a two lane roadin rural Maine, I had been listening to the radiobroadcast of the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankeeschampionship baseball game. The Red Sox —under my telepathic guidance — had held thelead. My headlights illuminated the woods on eitherside of the narrow road. You could barely exceed35 mph on its curves.

You’ve seen the advertisement many times, the onewhere a rhinoceros chases a Defender on thesavannah. You chuckled until you realized that therhino, normally a gentle star, threw a tantrum andactually butted the Defender a couple of times dur-ing the shooting of the advert.

Well, that’s what I remembered when a deerbounded out of the woods and attacked the LandRover. It waited until it was just in front of mybumper, cut across the road from the left, andbegan its assault. I know it was a Yankee deerbecause I swear I saw the initials NY, crossed justlike on a Yankees cap, on its fur. The front bumperlifted the animal into the radiator support and theright front wing, and then off to the side of theroad. The radiator support gave way enough topush the radiator into the fan which disabled thecar.

I ground to a halt, infuriated but unhurt. The roadhad tall trees and thick woods on either side, offer-ing the skittish deer a perfect hiding spot. Why itchose to bound out in from on my car at that pre-cise moment baffled me. No other car came by forthe next 30 minutes. I stepped out of the car andlooked around. Antifreeze leaked copiously ontothe road; the right wing resembled an origamiexercise. The deer lay still, clearly destined tobecome someone’s mince meat pie.

The deer’s sudden entrance raised suspicions in mymind. By the time the state police and tow truckarrived and I could turn my attention back to thegame, the Yankees had stormed ahead and won thegame. Clearly the deer, sensing the assistance I hadgiven to Red Sox manager Grady Little, gave up itslife to assure a Yankee comeback. While I was tiedup with the tow truck, Grady Little left PedroMartinez in the game through the 8th inning and, well, the rest is history.

Of course, just the week before, I had fully tunedup the Land Rover, installing new points and sparkplugs, checking the timing, topping up all fluidsfrom rear differential to front swivel balls. I hadeven adjusted the brakes. Now the Rover sits await-ing some welding and body work before it canresume its daily service. The radiator support, radi-ator and fan require replacement. The right frontwing might be salvageable with some skilled hammering.

I’ve always considered myself a buff about animals.I love dogs, ride horses and willingly muck out sta-bles and stalls. I mourn gently over road kill. But ahorse put my IIA into a ditch a decade ago andanother deer ate my MGB last year. Land Rovershave been chasing, transporting, tracking and oth-erwise hanging around animals for decades; in mycase, hanging around too close for comfort. I don’tthink I’ll be renting a video of Bambi soon. Maybeinstead, I’ll find a copy of The Deer Hunter.

________ P ________

Of course, as long as I’m having to disassemblemuch of the right side of the IIA, maybe this is thetime to look at other needed repairs. Whereas mostLand Rovers have two vents in the scuttle, whichcan be opened and closed depending on the weath-er, mine has a third just above the Kodiak heaterunit mounted to the bulkhead. This one has grownlarger as rust has taken hold of the upper lip facingthe engine compartment [Memo to Self: that’s whyinner fender wells exist. Think about replacingthose missing ones.]. It would be a fine time tohave a skilled welder work on those panels;replacements ones are being shipped from RoversNorth as I write this column. In rural New England, welding shops are as common as tanning salons inthe suburbs. Skilled ones are harder to find butavailable, so my IIA will be strengthened this com-ing month.

Jim Pappas, the founder of Bay State Rover OwnersAssociation and still an irrepressible Land Roverfan, once claimed that my Land Rover was the onlyone he knew that could be detailed with a garbagebag. Of course, he worked as a Sales Guide for aLand Rover Centre [still does, but now in NewJersey] so his vehicles, which once totaled over 8,were immaculate. Admittedly, mine was not and isstill not. Perhaps I should offer it to MTV’s newshow “Pimp My Ride.” In the opening episode, hosted by rapper Xzibit, they took a $400 DaihatsuHijet mini-minivan and poured $20,000 of“improvements.” New wheels, tires, paint, wrap-around couch, refrigerator, wide screen DVD and avideo camera absorbed the funding. Of course, inthe end, you still have only a Daihatsu Hijet, buthey, this is California. I think I’ll leave the IIA “asis.” Memo to Jim Pappas: Please send moregarbage bags.

________ P ________

If Jim Pappas is one of the more maniacal LandRover enthusiasts, he joins the hundreds of Roverbuffs, male and female, this editorship has permit-ted me to meet over the past 10 years. Nearly 50issues have gone to press since I first limped intoRovers North in 1992 with my IIA, its engine ring-ing like jingle bells. Charlie Haigh, Randy Botala,Lanny Clark and Mark Letorney showed me howpiston rings can break and how they can bereplaced by two people in a day. By the end of therepair, my bank account had thinned out consider-ably. Mark already had someone to clean up theshop, so I suggested maybe I could write for theRovers North News. Coincidentally, Mark neededsomeone to write because no one at Rovers Northhad the time to contribute stories. After one issue, Iattended my first Rovers North Rally and wrote upthe event. Shortly after, the then-editor left Vermont.Mark gulped and accepted my request to serve aseditor from afar.

As every business traveler will confirm, constantbusiness travel has the potential to be a miserableexperience. When my business travel increased, Istarted to contact Rovers North in search of Roverenthusiasts nationwide. Meeting the enormousrange of Land Rover owners took me to manyplaces: Boston, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Savannah,Nashville, Charleston, Norfolk and Lynchburg, VA,Washington, D.C., Portland, ME and Portland, OR,New Orleans, Lafayette and Baton Rouge, Houstonand Dallas. What a difference that makes on everytrip; I might have been the happiest person in theairport. Those Land Rover friendships helped me to return to England twice and expand my under-standing of the Land Rover community worldwide. The travel doesn’t include the numerous eventsfrom New York to Texas that lets me meet hun-dreds more every time.

I owe the Land Rover community a great deal forits member’s insights, intelligence, energy andenthusiasm. For me, it all started with that visit toRovers North, where I was, and continue to betreated, as a client and a friend, just like every cus-tomer. Collectively, we’re a very lucky group, thanks to Land Rovers.

Behind TheSteering Wheel

Page 17: Spring 2004 Rovers North News

Once the prototype is complete, the productionprocess begins. We first measure the prototype with ameasuring machine. Layout then begins on the proof-ing fixture. When finished this fixture will resemble athree dimensional box referencing key points in allplanes.

With the proofing fixture under construction the base-line measurements, provided via the vectoring machine, are converted into numerical commands. These valuesbegin the programming process.

Now that the initial program is written, the results areviewed in simulation prior to bending. Here, the partto be run is active and can be viewed 360 degrees inall planes as we pan thru the sequence of events aboutto take place.

Tube racks full of raw stainless stock are sortedaccording to diameter, grade, wall thickness and millrun. Interestingly enough the same size and gradetube from different mills will each require its own pro-gram for the same part# as they each bend with theirown characteristics.

With tubing loaded, bending automatically beginswhen the operator starts the cycle. It is here that theresponsibility of bend quality falls on the operator andhis ability to successfully set up such variables as tool-ing, hydraulic pressures, springback, etc...

As the bending process happens quickly, a trained andwatchful eye is needed to anticipate potential colli-sions. With multiple operations happening simultane-ously, each with such force, crashes are expensive.

Successfully bent, you can see how it compares toitself earlier when suspended in simulation. It's nowready for trimming and welding. Care must be takenwhen removing, as the tube is now hot from the bend-ing process.

Behind the Scenes at NRP: How Custom Exhausts are MadeWith the launch of the new NRP Discovery II exhaust Rovers North took the opportunity to look behind the scenes in taking the prototyping into production.

The exit pipe is a short section requiring compoundcuts in the middle of a bend with several nested intothe same tube. Not what you want to cut without theright saw! Abrasive saws deflect too much on this typeof cut, so we use a friction saw. With a blade speed of15,000 feet per minute it cuts by friction alone, burn-ing its way thru the cut. Not only will it wake up theneighbors but when it breaks a blade at full song, well, nuff said!

Removed from fixturing and passing from station to station our Discovery II systemmakes its final stop as the last weld is stitched in.

The NRP Discovery II tail section complete and readyto ship to Rovers North.

Friends In Outdoor Spaces:Houston Land Rover ClubThere is a saying among the Land Rover Community that “when you buy aLand Rover, you get 1000 friends to go along with it!” This is definitelythe case with the Houston Land Rover Club!Founded in 1997, the Houston Land Rover Club started with a handful ofmembers which met every Friday night at a local sandwich shop. Today,we have well over 160 members, and we have a hard time finding a placelarge enough for all of us to meet! This growth can only be attributed byone thing, the uniqueness of the Land Rover Community! What is this community? For starters, all Land Rover owners in the clubpretty much have one thing in common; most of us have a love affair withour vehicles. From the Discovery I & IIs, Range Rover Classics, NewRange Rovers, D-90s, and Series vehicles, we can’t get enough of them!In the Houston Land Rover Club, we have also have several rarer types ofLandies, from a pristine ‘49 Series I, (3) 101 Forward Controls, (1)109” LHD FFR, several restored Series IIIs, a Lightweight, as well as aSeries I stationwagon affectionately known as “The Silver Bullet.” This, combined with countless numbers of modified Discos, Rangies, andDefenders truly makes us a Solihull of the South so to speak!Quite frankly though, the most important aspect of the club is the

support, friendship, and comraderie that is shared amongst

club members. One way we gather support forthe club is by holding frequent “MonsterGarage” sessions, which enable us to help each other work on our vehi-cles (which is needed quite often owning a Rover), off-road clinics toenable new ones to truly enjoy the “Land Rover Experience”, and longrange trips, such as Moab, Colorado, and South America. Finally, a good club needs the support of vendors. We are lucky in thatwe have very strong backing from our local dealership, Land RoverHouston. That coupled with the consistent support from vendors likeRovers North, allows us the ability to not only fix our beloved Landies, but keep them looking sharp as well!If you are ever in our area of the country, please look us up. You canalso see what we are doing on our website:www.houstonlandroverclub.com. We love the opportunity to meet fellowRover enthusiasts, because after all, we are one big Land Rover family!

Tooling sets are unique to each diameter, radius, wall, and material. At the center is the mandrel itself. Thisallows the tubing diameter to be maintained through-out the bend. Tubing must be clean as any debris willbe trapped which can damage tooling and tube.Special cutting techniques are used to minimizecleaning time.

Page 18: Spring 2004 Rovers North News

It’s Spring in northern New England, which means thatmud, crocuses, spring training promises of a WorldSeries from the Red Sox and catalogues can’t be farbehind. When you want the get the attention of a winter-weary public, media giants and savvy marketers know youneed a Land Rover somewhere in the scene. Once againthere are superb entries that warrant emptying more ofthe crockery cupboards at Rovers North. As always, it’shelpful for rookies to review the rules for Sightings – it can be just as useful for the grizzled Sighting veteransas well.

Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and ourappreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward onlythose Sightings that capture the unique qualities of LandRovers and their owners, and display them in an unusualor distinctive way.

Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can’t awardyou a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised, that LandRovers appear in British television programmes, Britishpublications, films with British themes, and shows aboutAfrican safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, andshould consider looking for other ways to get a coffeemug.

Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, weclose off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting inan earlier issue, we won't mention it again. If you’re newto the family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not haveseen your Sighting in an earlier issue.

Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, one mug per Sighting per issue.

Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references inbooks go to our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only when space permits.

Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and addressbecause of atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognizeyour Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submis-sions - remember we can’t send a mug by e-mail. Send usyour real name and shipping address, too.

Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, theEditor admits hemight make an error.Let me know if youthink you’ve beenjobbed, but all deci-sions of the Editor are final.

The HoustonChronicle runs the car-toon strip “Shortcuts.”An August issue fea-tured information onthe rhinoceros. Guesswhat sand-colored vehi-cle they chose toinclude in the drawing?Yup, a Series IIA [check out those door hinges!]. Thanksto Leighton Ogg, Houston, TX. Bill Bosco, Monroe, CT, Kevin Eryes, Beaverton,OR, Patrick Murphy, Montgomery, NY, Jared Bryn Ivy,Anaheim, CA, Chris Estey, Yorktown, VA, ConnorHansell, Salt Lake City, UT, and Ralph Bradt, Pine, CO,waded into the fray and found anice Defender 90 hiding behindElsa Benitez.

Local products need LandRovers, too. Witness an ad for aWest Virgina bank, BB&T, thatincludes a Defender 90 wing.Chuck Cline, Princeton, WV,and Brad Benett, Wilson, NC,both sent in the ad. FloridaVacations is reprising the BuschGardens Defender 110 safariwagon in its ads, notes theReynolds Family, Jacksonville,FL. Budget Rent A Car inReykjavik, Iceland, will rent youa Defender for kayaking, orwhatever else you might like todo, according to the ad sent inby John Michaud, Cheshire, CT.

Television loves Land Rovers as theymight enliven otherwise dull programs.David Hartzell, Mechanicsburg, PA,spotted a Discovery near the end of an

episode of Las Vegas, but wecan't figure out why. BillBadger, Manchester Center, VTand his wife were watching theUSA miniseries Traffic when sheyelled “Land Rover!” The good

guys drive a Series IIA in this episode –this we understand. Kevin Eyres,Beaverton, OR, and Pam Nelson,Silverthorne, CO saw the same show.Michael McKenna, Peabody, MA,watched the Today show with MattLauer. Driving a Defender 110 inBotswana helps make him a bigger star, I guess. PeterKing, Signal Mountain, TN, found a Defender 110 inBerlin helping launch an airship on the

Discovery Channel’s Airshipsshow. Peter also watched a Lithuanian strongman pull aDefender 110 over 40 feet by splicing his beard to a towstrap. Hmm..... Even PBS needed a Lightweight to pro-mote the show Naked Man, says Lonnie White,Stoutland, MO.

Demonstrating commercial tele-vision’s questionable taste,Steve Andrews spotted aDiscovery in a TV movie on theLaci Peterson death. JasonWalsh, Chicago, IL, watchedAshton Kutcher on MTV Cribsdemonstrate why celebritiesshould not be allowed to pur-chase Land Rovers. Jeff Lovelace, Dayton, NV, Pat Murphy, New York NY,Ed Hart, New London, CT, Colin Spencer, Bloomfield,CT, Keith Strickland, Lebanon, MO and Bill Conn,Snohomish, WA, all spotted the Series Land Rover in the“boot camp” ad for Dell.

Target always has cleverads and guess what? Thistime they included aLand Rover, writesSteven Quigley,Flagstaff, AZ. That mus-tard yellow 109” surelooked good. JohnTokar, Monrovia, MD,Jim Hall, Evergreen,CO, Alan Foster,Ripplemead, VA andGordon Gunn, Chester,VA, spotted the same ad.Kevin Growney, New

Canaan, CT, found an adfor the New York SportsClubs for Club Kick, andit sure looks like thetire of a Range RoverClassic being kicked

ferociously.

Catalogues need Land Rovers, too, tospice up their offerings. Our oldfriends at Orvis often feature LandRovers to entice people to purchasetheir quality fishing products. DavidDeojay, Canterbury, CT, spotted aDefender 110 in the Spring cataloguedriving across the desert in Botswana.Suzanne Jonker, New Canaan, CT,spotted a Defender 110 in theAmbercormbie and Kent Destinations

Club ad in the Robb Report. Jennifer Palmer, EastStroudsburg, PA, found a Series III in an African montageat the web site of Eagle Creek travel accessories [every-one read Rule #2 carefully].

It’s a most unusual catalogue offering, but Vitronics, which works with the promotional print industry, oncemotivated its salespeople in 1973 with the chance toearn a gold trimmed Land Rover 88”, reports GregCoffman, Coshocton, OH. Zach Arbios, Elverta, CA,also spotted a Tirfor Griphoist catalogue that mimicsthe evocative line drawings of 50’s Land Rover ads –and even includes a Land Rover. Tucked away in aCostco catalogue is a Sharp digital camcorder, and theimage in the camera is a Defender 110 on safari. BillConn, Snohomish, WA and a phantom sighter [seeRule #2] spotted the ad. Kevin Thayer, Abingdon,

VA, Keith Strickland,

Lebanon, MO, and Kevin Healy,Massapequa Park, NY, found a 109” 3-door in use in thenew Patagonia catalogue.

In a movie about big-wave surfing called BillabongOdyssey, Susannah and Ivan Via, Lynchburg, VA, spot-ted two Defender 90s at work. A movie trailer on Yahooincluded Spartan, which in turn had a Range Rover chas-ing the goodguys. Sigh, agreed GarretShirley,Muscle Shoals,AL. Bill Conn,Snohomish,WA, foundDefender 90sin the moveLeft Behindand a Series II109” in SnowDogs. WesleyChun, LosAngeles, CA,offers us “thelast chance tosend a deserving Land Rover owner one of your exclusivemugs.” For a shot of a Discovery in Love, Always, whocould pass that up?

If you’ve read The Da Vinci Code, you know why it’s abest-seller. David Thodal, Belgrade, MT, noted that aRange Rover figured prominently in the plot. Just as liter-ary is Whitewater Paddling, in which an article featureda Defender 110. Connor Hansell, Salt Lake City spottedthe article.

Dave Crow, Manassas, VA sent in an ad for the Robert H.Smith School of Business in the Wall Street Journal thatfeatured a nice Series III. Dear Rovers North,

I am currently serving in Bagdad, Iraq, with the 214thMilitary Police Company from Alexander City, AL. Mywife sent me the latest issue of the Rovers North News.I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed that little taste ofhome. The only good thing about Baghdad is theopportunity to see all makes of Land Rovers in every-day use. They use them for everything you can think of.Unfortunately, they shoot at us from them as well.

I also want to thank y’all for taking care of our '94Range Rover and '97 Discovery’s parts needs while Iam away. I told my wife just to tell your staff what weneeded and it would be taken care of.

Thanks,

Dear Rovers North,

Just last fall I was married and honeymooned on thecoast of Negril, Jamaica. While exploring the backroads of the Blue Mountains we came across a greatfind, a Land Rover Defender 110 in superb shape.Anyone who has visited Jamaica can tell you that manyof the vehicles are in really bad shape. I believe thatfinding a perfect Defender 110 in the Blue Mountainsis unique, and not just an embarrassing afternoonevent on our honeymoon as my wife continues toremind me and all our friends.

Thank you for your time and great publication. I trulyenjoy its content and insight. Most of all it’s comfortingto know that there are people out there that are just ascrazy about Land Rovers!

Dear Editor,

I have been a fan of Land Rovers for a very long timeand finally late summer this year, I did get one. It’s aWillow Green Discovery Series I. I love it, leaks andall. Do you know of any clubs that would be interestedin an “English style” off-road trials course with a targetaudience of stock to lightly modified vehicles?

We own a 110-acre property just outside of Plymouth,NH. Tree farming has been done for years and there aretrails in the woods. It also has a varied terrain and asuper nice campground next door. To get things started,I’ve begun to cut the trails – slow work with hand clip-pers and a standard Jimmy for the grunt work. We’rejust interested in bringing folks together for a fun week-end and no need for major modifications.

If you know of anyone or group interested, please letus know. Feel free to call us at (203) 271-3682.
