Thomas Buijs, Sainte-Foy, Quebec, found a ‘93Range Rover Classic with only 107,000 miles inWashington, D.C. He thought nothing of flyingto Washington and driving his new RangeRover home. Terry Hazzard, Camden, ME,found his ‘95 Range Rover LWB Classic inMaine. This ex-pat Brit loves his “new” familycar. Like thousands of Range Rover Classicowners, theyadore theirRange Roversand want tokeep them ingreat shape withGenuine LandRover parts. With the newyear, they’reabout to get terrific news.

Land Rover hasbeen historicallysupportive of itsolder vehicles. This is not common. Frankly,Land Rover’s corporate parent, Ford, does nothave a good reputation for keeping genuineparts in their pipeline. Not to beat up on Ford;only a handful of manufacturers, such as BMW,Porsche and Mercedes, retain a pride in theirearliest models that they back their enthusiastowners with a comprehensive parts list. Overthe decades, Series I-II-III owners have benefited from Land Rover’s corporate commitment.

As of January 1, 2005, Land Rover reaffirms itscommitment by establishing Land RoverClassic Parts (LRCP), aimed specifically at providing Genuine Parts for the owners ofRange Rover Classics (1970-1994) andDiscovery Series I’s (1989-1994). With their engineered-in durability and enthusiastic owners, the demand for Genuine Parts remainsstrong for older vehicles. Land Rover has soldnearly 200,000 Range Rovers and Discoverys inNorth America since 1987 (the year of officialimportation). The Land Rover dealer networksupports newer vehicles with Genuine Partsbut this new operation will be a boon to theowner of earlier coil-spring vehicles.

In North America, the first account for GenuineParts through LRCP is Rovers North. With over25 years of exclusively Land Rover experience,Rovers North is acknowledged as the center for classic Land Rover expertise throughout thecontinent. Rovers North will warehouse theentire line of Range Rover Classic parts. RoversNorth’s agree-ment with LRCPmeans that LandRover owners, contemplatingthe purchase ofolder, classicvehicles, canpurchase themwith the assurance thatGenuine Partswill remain available.Owners candrive, maintain and restore their vehicles withconfidence, knowing that Land Rover continuesto maintain and improve the marque. Rovers

North president Mark Letorney said that thecreation of LRCP “returns Land Rover partssupply and availability to the high standing ofdecades past when Land Rover was the indus-try standard.” This is also a breakthrough forRange Rover owners; as Letorney noted, “LRCPrecognizes the Range Rover Classic customeras the do-it yourself owner/enthusiast who

works on their own cars.” SoRovers North and LRCP are nowworking closely together to determine what parts NorthAmerican Range Rover Classicowners needed for maintenance, restoration and off-roading. LRCPhas made a firm commitment toassure the availability of LandRover parts at affordable prices, and Rovers North’s unique standing with Land Rover meansthat it can pass along price savings to enthusiasts.

Tom Pallister, Director ofCustomer Service for Land Rover in the UK,described this new business initiative as “anexcellent opportunity for us to provide animproved after-market service to a clearlydefined and loyal sector of Land Rover consumers.”

The Land Rover Classic Parts business unit willmanage the purchase, warehousing, distribution and promotion of genuine LandRover parts for specific older models. Fromlaunch in October, the program will coverRange Rover Classic (1970 to 1994), DiscoverySeries I (1989 to 1994 model year). To furtherenhance the program an all-new Land RoverClassic identity has been developed, which willenable customers to relate to the brand andfeel assured in the knowledge, that all productsoffered within this program are 100% GenuineLand Rover Parts.

The first Range Rover in 1970 electrified theautomotive world. Geof Miller, an engineer onthe original design team for the Range Rover, told this reporter a story of the early test driveswith European sales managers. While taking

the German importer on a roadtest trip in England, all Geof heardwas the complaint that “no onewill pay this much money for aLand Rover!” To convince theskeptical importer, the driverpointed the car towards a fieldand said “let’s go this way.” Theycareened into a rock strewn fieldand pounded the car through hillsand dales. When they rejoined thepaved road, the German askedonly when they would be available for sale.

A quick glance at the castle-ridged hood, thehigh beltline, the airy cabin, the exceptionaldriving position, and the elegant ruggedness of

the lines, attract every viewer of a Range Rover.Subsequent design changes have kept some ofthe signature features of the original RangeRover, but the Range Rover Classic has a timeless appeal that makes Toyota LandCruisers, Mercedes M-class cars, and their ilklook very dated, very quickly. No wonder thatLand Rover wants to support enthusiasts withquality parts at reasonable prices.

Rovers North has maintained a formal relationship with Land Rover for decades; theannouncement of this agreement with LRCPsolidifies Rovers North’s standing with enthusiasts. Mark Letorney calls the RangeRover Classic “a modern piece of transportation that’s timeless, a superb drivingclassic vehicle. Now the best news for RangeRover Classic owners is that they can continueto purchase these wonderful vehicles and keepthem on the road with high quality, affordableparts direct from Land Rover. A new collectiblehas been born!”

Mars vs. Venus - The Land Tag Team Match

by: Jac’Kiye McCollett and Jeff Aronson

[Jac’Kiye McCollett, N. Monmouth, ME, took the editor car shopping on a visit to LandRover Scarborough, Maine’s only Land Rover dealer. She wanted to see the full modelrange of new and classic Land Rovers; what she noticed was how differently women andmen view their Land Rovers -ed.]

Early one Friday morning I found myself traveling on a long overdue trip to really examine Land Rovers. As Jeff and I exitedhis car, there they were Land Rovers, Discovery’s, Range Roversand my favorite, a beautiful deep green Defender with a roof rack.I immediately wanted to sit on top of the rack. Being a mother offour teenagers can be a challenge, forcing me to set my child-likeimage of myself aside; however, as I looked upon its sun-cladexterior I said to myself, am I too “old” to sit on top of a car?? No,of course not! Without a ladder, I demurred and instead openedthe drivers side door, hopped in and searched for the key. Whatwas it doing on the left side of the steering column? I stuck in thekey. What a magnificent sound the engine made as it fired up. Iwas amazed at how the vehicle rode. I felt as though I had justwon the lottery sitting behind the wheel of one of the most beautiful British cars; all that was missing was my Beatles CDplaying in the background. I was finally able to pry myself from itsembrace and went around to the back, opened its hatch and wasstunned at how much space this Rover had to offer. The four folddown seats reminded me of “boat seats”, perfect for my children on short trips. I’mguessing they wouldn’t be as comfortable on a long journey. A mental image flashedthrough my head. This could possibly be ‘the new family car’.

My reverie was broken when Jeff literally pulled me from this ‘mother magnet’ to put mebehind the wheel of a ‘93 Range Rover Classic. The minimal power steering and brakesstopped me abruptly from the thoughts of a family outing in the Defender and I realizedquickly that this Range Rover was a much more comfortable ride. The acceleration wasawesome as we headed down the road. Experiencing a new-to-me vehicle can be quitescary, yet the British models fit me like a second skin. Now there were two cars I had tohave. This lovely white RR had plenty of room for a family of 6,and possibly the dog! My thoughts trailed to “how many pairs ofblack heels could I fit in this thing?” That’s when Jeff decided Ishould experience the off road test track in this 11 year old LandRover. He fiddled with the two gearshift levers and we began toclimb up a steep rocky hill. One thing I wasn’t certain of wasJeff’s driving; another thing I wasn’t sure of was staring at thesky. The Range Rover crept up what seemed to be a mountain ofrocks, then started down again. It looked as though we’d crash atthe bottom for sure. When I regained consciousness I was star-ing at the bottom of the slope. When I thought the test track wascomplete, I’m met with a side angle wondering how gravity hasn’tallowed the car to flip on its side or roof. My adrenaline rushwasn’t from the complete horror of being tipped on our side, butfrom knowing I wasn’t in imminent danger. Any vehicle other thana Rover would’ve sent me into shock.

I was snapped out of dreamland once again by another whiteimage in my peripheral vision. It couldn’t be!? But oh yes it was - the most authentic RoverI have ever laid eyes on, a Series lll 109 with the steering wheel on the ‘right’ side. Oh joy!I was hooked. I climbed inside and smelled the aroma of old leather and pipe smoke. Iwas hit in my most vulnerable senses; I closed my eyes, leaned my head back, put bothhands on the wheel and I was driving. I could see the family removing fishing gear as I satparked in the middle of a clear running stream. The children sitting on the hood, castingtheir poles, then after a long day my husband loading a cooler full of fish in the back of thisglorious old beauty. Yes, this was the Rover for me. Unfortunately, Jeff reminded me thatthe Massachusetts plates on the car meant it was owned by someone already.

Well, it was until the LR3 came into view. Here it sat so alone, calling my name, oh darn, that’s Jeff again. “Hop in” he says. Much to my surprise I found the LR3 a bit boring toride in; it reminded me of the minivan I drive everyday, but alas, what a practical and convenient vehicle for a mom. There wasenough room in this thing to seat an entire Army, two gloveboxes, one for registration, insurance etc. And one for lipstick, mascara, eye pencil. I’m sure women would agree that stuff isessential, but I suppose the insurance card would be the perfect‘lipstick blotter’.

I noticed it was time to go back to motherhood. Sadly, I wasn’table to test drive a Discovery but I wasn’t exactly sure I wantedto as it looked like a hearse. The twin sunroofs and the seatingfor 7 did appeal to me, but not the styling.

All in all my Land Rover expedition was successful. I determinedthat a Land Rover, regardless of the style was perfect for a mother to own. No more minivan’s for this lady. I need to ask myhusband, “Can I take the green Defender home?” I wonder whathe would say.

[Jeff Aronson] Daily driving in a Series Land Rover can inure you to the changes made byLand Rover over the past, oh, 35 years or so. I had no idea that some Land Rover ownersdid not require mechanic’s boiler suits, full toolboxes, spare parts collections and Go-Jo orFast Orange containers, just to get down the road. Did you know you can drive a LandRover with clean clothes? There are owners who don’t carry the Haynes or Factory

Service manuals with them can you believe it?! A trip to a LandRover dealer’s is a great way to drive these points home. As wepulled into the Land Rover Centre, lots of Landie eye candy caughtmy eye. Perched on a hillock was a ‘97 Defender 90 SW. A 2003Discovery Series II demonstrated its articulation by sitting atop anartfully collected pile of rocks. A new Range Rover and new LR3 satside by side making everything else in the lot look a bit dated. AToyota Land Cruiser and Ford Expedition in the used car lot lookedforlorn and oh so ‘90’s I immediately begged for the keys to the ‘97Defender. It felt blissfully cramped. Your shoulders hunched againstthe doors which featured wind up windows and manual door locks. The ignition key was just where the British would logically put it.Behind me were 4 jump seats, perfect for anyone for short trips andenormous patience. You sat with the wheel at your chest and thewindshield inches from your face. The familiar V8 sounded so goodyou could forgive the automatic; everyone acknowledges they’resuperior for most drivers. With full headlining and minimal appointments, this was the family car par excellence - provided

your family has extraordinary forbearance and fortitude. Your spouse or significant otherwould approach sainthood just for letting you buy it.

I’ve always enjoyed the lines and mechanical design of the Range Rover Classic. The whitelong wheelbase had shed its air suspension for the Rovers North coil spring conversion;with over 100,000 miles on the odometer, the car still drove briskly, smoothly and with precision. If the bushings had never been replaced, this car had been coddled for much ofits life. A road test confirmed what I, and thousands of enthusiasts, love about the RangeRover. Here’s a car for every occasion from highway touring to in-town errands. Theboundaries off road are those of your courage and your wallet. A dent in a Range Rover

will always cost more than one in a Series Rover, but my oh my,what a capable vehicle. I wondered how many pairs of Wellingtons Icould fit into this thing. Jac’Kiye had never been off-roading andHugh Barton, the dealer service manager, nicely offered to let merun around the fields behind the Centre. Then I spied the test trackand decided this would show Jac’Kiye every capability of a LandRover. She took the surprise well, yelling only once that I was to “getthis car out of here immediately.”

Off in a corner of the lot sat a neat 109” SW. The grill and fascia showed it to be a Series III, although the door tops were froma Series II-A. Of course, there were no Series III 109’s imported officially to the US, so perhaps this one came in through Canada.General Manager Leon Kenny noted that the engine required a fullrebuild but that the car seemed sound. I envied the owner. Jac’Kiyefantasized about owning the car until I reminded her it was just likedriving in my Series II-A, only slower, and that passing a car withRHD when you drive on the right was a frightening thing indeed.

Deep down, of course, I would commit most any heinous crime to get my hands on a Series109” station wagon.

As with so many Land Rovers, the LR3 looks better in person or on television ads than itdoes in photographs. It’s far too modern for my tastes (why do I keep thinking of a HondaElement when I see one) on the outside, but I give Land Rover credit for making a remarkable interior. When you fire it up, the millions of pound sterling spent on modifyingthe Jaguar block into a proper Land Rover engine becomes understandable. What a majestic car on the road! 4.4 liters and 300 horsepower will do great things; the 6-speed automatic added to the silkiness. There’s a tautness and agility not really felt in any LandRover I’ve driven. A multitude of cup holders and storage places give me the creeps; thiscar is intended for on-road touring. Still, the plethora of electronic aids for off roading, from

Hill Descent to 4-wheel Electronic Traction Control to the newTerrain Response control knob states firmly that Land Rover hasn’tforgotten its heritage. I looked longingly at the fields behind the LandRover Centre until Jac’Kiye announced that her maternal dutiesdemanded that she get home right away.

What do you mean, you have to leave? Can’t children forage forthemselves? I stared at a Discovery Series I and a Series II, bothwaiting for test drives. I’ve always liked the elevation at the rear ofthe roof line and there are thousands of used Discoverys just waitingfor enthusiasts to become their owners. And what about that spectacular new Range Rover? We hadn’t even opened the door of aFreelander! Where are your priorities?

What a day for a daydream, driving Land Rovers all day. How doesanyone at a dealership get anything accomplished? I need to ask mybanker, “Can I take the green Defender home?” I wonder what hewould say.

Welcome to the winter edition of Robison on Rovers. I hopethe fall season finds you and your Rovers in good health, wherever you are. Just this week, I took calls from LandRover owners in the Virgin Islands, Australia, and Africa – so Iknow there are plenty of Land Rover owners out there in nice climates even when it’s 34 degrees and rainy here. We wereable to meet some of you at the events we attended this summer, and we look forward to seeing more of you in 2005.

For those of you who wondered about my pre-Land Rover life,my brother – writer Augusten Burroughs - has a chapter devoted to that very subject in his newest bestseller – MagicalThinking. It’s available in bookstores everywhere for those ofyou who seek our darkest secrets. Greasy broken cars, heavymetal bands, alien bondage – it’s all in there.

In this column I’m going to talk about the Range Rover Classicmodels – how they evolved, problems to look for, and popularupgrades. In subsequent issues we’ll do the same with theother Land Rover models. . .

The Range Rover was the only product Land Rover sold in theUnited States when they returned here in 1987. Beyond howthe model evolved, I will point out some things to look out for ifyou are buying one or if you already own one.

Prior to 1995 these vehicle weren’t called Classics – they werejust Range Rovers. They became Classics after the introduction of a new design Range Rover – the P38A, or“new” Range Rover in 1995. But some people say the Classicmoniker came from British fascination with American fast food– after all, Range Rover Classics appeared shortly after similar“Classic” offerings from Coke and Mcdonald's arrived.

Range Rover Classics were first sold in America in 1987. Thefirst cars had cloth seats as the standard, no sunroof, and 3.5litre engines. The 1988 cars were similar, but with the additionof leather seats and sunroof.

These early trucks were underpowered for American high-ways, but their simplicity and low cost makes them excellenttrail trucks today. An early Range Rover with upgraded springsand wheels and the interior stripped out to save weight makesa very capable rig at modest cost.

The biggest problem with these early Range Rovers is rust andcorrosion. Look for problems in these areas: around the liftgate glass; in the rear door jambs toward the back; wherethe front fenders attach to the body under the hood; under theplastic rocker moldings; in the frame rails; in the gas tanks; andin the floor boards under both front seats.

The transfer cases are rugged, but the linkages are prone tobind from rust if not shifted regularly. Engines are rugged also, but expect to do a valve job and repair head gasket leaksbetween 100,000 and 150,000 miles. These engines will build upsludge – visible in the oil pan and under the valve covers – ifnot well maintained. I suggest synthetic oil in any Rover toprevent this.

Radiators in Range Rovers seem to have a life of about 100,000miles. If your temperature gauge rises in hot weather there isa good chance your radiator is at its limits (Check your viscousfan and thermostat also). I suggest brand new replacementsbut many people choose to recore as a less costly alternative.

1987-1989 Range Rovers used a mechanical speedometerdrive. The cables, angle drive, and heads are all prone to bindand fail in cold weather. They seem to break most often turning over the ten thousands column.

The metal transmission and engine oil cooler lines are prone torust out. If these lines blow while driving they often spell sudden death for the engine or transmission.

The metal gas tanks on 1987-1989 models are prone to rustingout although many of these have been upgraded. Fuel pumpconnections inside the left rear wheel arch corrode.

Steering boxes tended to wear out. The pitman arm shaft getsloose and wobbles, resulting in a leaking steering box andsloppy steering. Factory exchange boxes are of a newerdesign – much better and they are available at moderate cost.

The suspension bushings used in these first American marketRange Rovers were not very durable. The replacement parts –from Land Rover or from other makers of Poly Bushings – aremuch more durable.

In 1989 the engine size was increased to 3.9 litres in responseto complaints that the vehicles lacked power. In addition, themanual locking transfer case was replaced with a viscouscoupler type case. This improved on-road performance and

reduced noise.

There are no new service issues on the 1989 models. Mycomments for older trucks apply here as well. In 1990 we sawsome cosmetic changes, the introduction of electronicspeedometer, and installation of a fancier stereo. The metalgas tank was replaced with a more rugged plastic unit. Powerincreased slightly as a result of a freer flowing exhaust andother minor changes. 1990 Range Rovers had a third stoplamp in the rear window for the first time. Range Roversbegan to appear in multiple trim levels – the County was thefanciest, the Hunter the most basic model. Various SpecialEditions began to appear at this time also.

1990 trucks have an improved fuel injection system, with a display box under the passenger seat that shows fault codes.1990-1995 Range Rovers are probably user-friendliest LandRovers from a back yard service standpoint.

1990 also saw the introduction of antilock brakes on the Countymodels. The antilock system is generally reliable, but be waryof failures – the ABS valve assembly under the hood is over$1,000 and not user-serviceable. Most ABS problems stemfrom either sensors or wheel bearings getting loose and causing bad sensor readings, and failure of the two systemrelays.

1990 also saw the introduction of front and rear anti roll (sway)bars on the top models. A few years ago kits to retrofit swaybars to the 1987-1989 vehicles were popular. Sway bars makea big difference in high-speed handling but they compromiseoff-road performance. At this point we have more call toremove sway bars for off-roaders than we do to fit them forhighway drivers. In any case, kits for older trucks are stillavailable.

In 1993, the County LWB (Long Wheel Base – 8 inches morefloor between front and rear seats) arrived – an EnglishSuburban. Alarm with push button locking was standard for thefirst time. LWB models were delivered with air suspensioninstead of coil springs. Changes in the steering box and frontend made for a tighter road feel. LWB models had fancierinterior trim – burl walnut, and memory seats were among theupgrades.

The County LWB models had a larger engine – 4.2 litres insteadof 3.9. The bigger motor gave more low-end torque but reliability of the bottom end was less than for the 3.9.

County LWB models were the first to feature traction control. This system senses slippage of a rear wheel and appliesbrakes to the slipping side. It considerably improved the ability of these trucks to slog through mud and soft sand. The traction control system is usually trouble free.

The air suspension (EAS – Electronic Air Suspension) introduced with these models worked well on the street whenit was new. But as the vehicles aged, the air suspension systems became problematic. The biggest issue is that anyfailure drops the car to the bump stops where it rests untilreset by a shop with the $10,000 specialist Land Rover testgear. The lack of user or field reparability spells the end of air suspension for the majority of owners. However, coils springsconversion kits that deliver a quality ride and are available atvery reasonable prices. (More on this later in the article.)

1993 models have an improved stereo. The stereo systemintroduced in 1993 was continued on to the end of the line in1995.

All in all, the County LWB trucks remain highly desirable foranyone who needs a Rover with carrying capacity. Interiorvolume is considerably greater in these models.

In 1994 the regular wheelbase Range Rover was offered withair suspension like the County LWB.

In 1995 the Range Rover was fitted with the dash design fromthe Discovery. Driver and passenger airbags were providedfor the first time, engine power increased slightly, and a newpush button locking system was fitted.

In my opinion, the 1995 models are far more comfortable todrive than older models because of the improved suspensionand upgraded interior.

All of the Range Rover Classic models use distributor type ignition. The rotors are prone to burn through, causing suddenfailure of your vehicle, and a long walk unless you happen tohave a spare. Plenty of time to ponder the resurgence ofmountain lions and bears in the New England woods as youattempt to walk out. I suggest you carry a spare, and whenyou go to install it – split the old one with a sharp chisel

because pulling up on it can break the fragile old distributoradvance. Ignition coils also fail, as do plug and coil wires.Make sure yours, are in good shape. Oily dampness aroundthe base of the coil is a sign the insulating oil has leaked andfailure is imminent.

The other thing that will leave you as the blue plate special forthe local wildlife, is the fuel pump. Vehicles over 100,000 milesare on borrowed time on their pumps. Failure is even morelikely if the filter has not been changed, because it’s harder topump through a plugged one. Make sure the pump is good, and also pay particular attention to the wiring.

Popular modifications

Any Land Rover product of this vintage will benefit from anapplication of Waxoyl if you live in a climate where you drive insalty water or winter snow. One of my earlier columns covered this topic. It’s available for download on the RoversNorth or Robison Service web sites.

Shock and suspension upgrades - The Bilstein and OME shockabsorbers give a firmer road feel and slightly improved handling. I prefer the feel of these upgraded shocks to that ofthe standard parts. When installing front shocks look at thecondition of the front shock towers – we often replace thembecause they rust and weaken, and the shock can punch rightthrough the hood on a hard bump if they fail.

The vast majority of owners of early air suspension trucks convert to coil springs to avoid trouble and expense. Coil conversion kits are available in a number of combinations ofstandard, medium, and heavy springs and shocks. These kitsare easily installed by a mechanically inclined owner.

Stainless exhausts – the original exhaust systems had a lifespan of less than three years. The various stainless systemson the market have proven quite a bit better. Some are quietand perform like stock, others are louder and produce a modest power gain.

There are many accessories available for off-roaders. Brushbars, Rock sliders, and roof racks are offered in many styles.Winches are often fitted to the front bars, with the Warn andSuperwinch 9,000 and 10,000lb units being two of the betterchoices. In New England, we use synthetic cable on the winches, but folks who winch on rocky ground should considerthe safety tradeoff given the greater abrasion resistance ofsteel cable.

Locking differentials, both theDetroit style and the air lockerstyle, are often fitted to front and rear axles. Steel differentialguards are also common, as are steel or aluminum skid plates.

In today’s market, Range Rover Classic models are widelyavailable at good prices. There is a huge array of customequipment for any conceivable use – dog cages, roll cages, car top tents, and under car armor. Classics offer significantlybetter build quality than older Discoveries, and their off-roadcapability can be right up there with the best Defenders for afraction of the cost. Furthermore, many people just love theseClassic style Rovers. More and more, we see people doingextensive restoration work because the Rover Classic offers apackage you just can’t buy in a newer Land Rover.

So if you’ve already got one . . . keep it maintained becausethey aren’t making any more. And if you’re looking to buy one. . . I hope the advice in my column helps you to make a better choice.

See you in the spring . . .John Robison

This year's Land Rover National Rally, Sept. 14-18, put on by the Solihull Society, basedin Colorado, was held in spectacular Moab, Utah. Rovers North's Mark Letorney andMike Koch met dozens of enthusiasts and Rovers North friends at the event. Fabulousweather helped make the off-roading unforgettable. Mike Koch jumped in and out ofthe Land Rovers owned by Carol Samons, Hans Schulze, and Keith Tanner to recordthe event for enthusiasts around the world. As Mark and Mike noted, "connecting withLand Rover enthusiasts who don't live in New England is a real plus in attending anevent like this. The Solihull Society did a terrific job organizing the meet and we lookforward to attending next year's rally."

Rovers North Attends National Rally

By Jeffrey Aronson

A great television ad came to mind this month I sat in my ‘66Series II-A. Staples, the office products retailer, took theChristmas pop hit “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” andused the background music for a back to school ad. While twochildren stared angrily at the camera, a happy father runs upand down the aisles shopping for back-to-school goods. It’s his“most wonderful time of the year.”

As a Christmas song, though, the saccharin nature of the tunebrings out the curmudgeon in me. The treacle inherent in thetune, the slavish lathering of joy - Bah Humbug! Then I hear “Ohthe weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful, andsince we’ve no place to go, Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let ItSnow!” It’s a perfectly atrocious piece of pop, musical drek, and it’s utterly false when you have a Land Rover. The weathermight be frightful this time of year, but you do have places to goand people to see, so let it snow and pile into the Rover.

“Piling into the Rover” means different things with differentRovers.. Remember the Range Rover television ad with the twocollege guys hitchhiking through the Alps? They’re dressed asif they’ve been outdoors all day. The oh-so-chic couple insidethe Range Rover look as though they just stepped out of thelounge at the ski lodge. This couple can be your model whenyou dress for winter success in your Range Rover or Discovery,or even a recent Defender 90 SW. Now, when you have a SeriesLand Rover, think of the hitchhikers. I speak from 13 years ofowning and driving my II-A all year. In your Range Rover orDiscovery, you might have to adjust the heater controls for front or rear, or between the passengers and driver’s side. These choices force you to turn a knob or punchin the preferred temperatures. In my Rover, the water valveabove the engine head is turned on for the season. Side to sideheat adjustment is accomplished by opening the left or rightdirectional flap on the Kodiak heater on the right side footwell. The one speed blower motor - which sounds like a scene out ofthe movie “Twister” - moves air several inches at a time. The 15different pieces of glass in my station wagon offer numerousplaces for the entry of outside air; so, too, do the door seals, windshield seal, roof to windshield seal, and body tub to topseal.

Winter driving in the north involves challenging, potentially dangerous situations. Snow and ice, sleet, freezing rain, blackice and high winds can play havoc with travel plans. Whethercommuting to work or embarking on a fun trip, you have to drivedifferently this time of year. No Land Rover can overcome thelaws of physics, but it’s like having a powerful defense lawyerby your side. Four wheel drive, permanent or selected, can helpyou go in a straight line much more accurately and effectivelythan a rear or front wheel drive vehicle, but it won’t stop youany faster. It should steer you more effectively but it won’t preclude you from taking yourself into a ditch. If you’re lucky, though, you’ll be able to drive right out of it. That’s one reasonwhy people love their Land Rovers.

Several years ago, the purchase of my Land Rover workedagainst me. While on a work assignment one winter I stayed ata bed and breakfast in a rural town. A snow storm began thatnight and when I woke up I found several inches on the groundand many more hanging about in the air, being blown about bygusty winds. The old Victorian building proved quite comfortable and the breakfast rivaled the best I had enjoyed inEngland. As the only guest present, the proprietress suggestedto her husband that permitting me to drive away might be dangerous and that perhaps I should be made to stay anothernight. I quite liked the idea myself. The proprietor looked overthe top of his newspaper and spied my Land Rover, buried in asnowdrift behind the house. “No, he’ll be fine. Look at his car - it’s a Land Rover.” Damn! They sent me out into theblizzard and I had a slow, unnerving drive of 4 hours back home.

As I write this column, we’ve already had snow in northern NewEngland and have a prediction of 5-10 inches in some regionsfor this very night. To echo our presidential candidates, “Bring itOn!”

It’s been often noted that in many parts of the world, the firstvehicle seen by 20th century children was a Series Land Rover. The Land Rover marque sits with a handful of high-impactname plate among the top echelon of vehicle manufacturers.Joseph White, who covers the automobile industry for The WallStreet Journal, wrote that “I was an adult before I actually sawa Land Rover vehicle. But I have known about Land Roverssince childhood, thanks to Sunday afternoons with Mutual ofOmaha’s Wild Kingdom. That classic Land Rover safari vehicleis still sold as the Defender in markets outside the U.S. LandRover executives would say it’s the original military grade, go-anywhere SUV of which the Hummer H2 is the copy.”

Land Rover enthusiasts know that Spen King, Tom Barton, GeofMiller, and the rest of the Range Rover design team had studied‘60’s cars such as the Jeep Wagoneer, Ford Bronco andInternational Scout to determine future directions for LandRover. What they accomplished was extraordinary given therelatively small resources available to Land Rover compared totheir better-financed competition.

The Range Rover, even in its most basic form in the 1970’s [theearliest ones only had carpeting for the front seats], demonstrated that engineering could be luxurious, that accessto hidden places could mean as much as appearance in front ofCarnegie Hall, that comfort did not have to equate to cocooning.

The WSJ’s White credits Land Rover “inventing the luxury SURmarket in the U.S. with the launch of the Range Rover in 1987.

Wealthy suburbanites snapped up Range Rovers to wrapsome of that safari mojo around their excursions to the mall.Competitors dope slapped themselves for failing to realize thatthe concept of a “luxury car” could be redefined so radically.”

The Range Rover concept morphed into the SUR leviathan, exemplified by the Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalde. Thesebecame an objects of derision and satire in the ‘90’s.Unfortunately, the Range Rover and its cousins, such as theDiscovery models, found themselves linked together with theseoverweight station wagon/trucks.

The problem for Land Rover lay in the numbers. In 1999, LandRover sold 29,380 vehicles in the U.S. In 2003, that number hadrisen to 39,035 - an impressive growth but, compared to thecompetition, production levels closer to Morgan thanMercedes. For corporate parent Ford to justify putting moneyinto the marque, it must increase the volume of production andsales.

Matthew Taylor, the head of Land Rover worldwide, has notedthat “Land Rover launched seven products in its first 54 years.Since 2002, we’ll be bringing five new products in six years.” Atthe end of this cycle, Mr. Taylor says, what had been a twovehicle (Discovery and Range Rover) North American lineupseveral years ago, before the advent of the compact Freelandermodel, will become a five model lineup. Those models willinclude: The Range Rover, the LR3, an updated Freelander andtwo more vehicles as yet not officially defined.

One will be a new product between Range Rover and the LR3that will represent “a much more sporty Land Rover,” Mr. Taylorsays. The other, he says, will likely represent a response to thechallenge of bringing back to the U.S. a vehicle with Defender’smilitary/safari look and extreme off-road capabilities, repackaged in a modern chassis with up-to-date safety andenvironmental technology.

Mr. Taylor is determined for Land Rover to grow to about200,000 to 250,000 vehicles globally, with about 30% of thosesales in the U.S. Those figures suggest a goal of roughly doubling U.S. sales from 2003 levels.

Aside from the exciting prospect of having a Defender modelback in the USA, any increase in Land Rover’s activity heremeans greener pastures for owners of older Land Rover models: original Defender 90/110’s, Range Rover Classics,Discovery Series I-II’s, and of course the genuine Series LandRovers. It’s an exciting time to be a Land Rover enthusiast.

Once again this year, a crew from Rovers North – ShaneWestover, Les Parker, Rick Speer and Dave Westover – drovesouth to the Mid Atlantic Rally, Buckingham County, Virginia.Naturally, the ROAV club did an outstanding job in planning aterrific event. Naturally, too, it poured all weekend and theywatched rivers rise over their banks. The fun of connecting withenthusiasts made the 18 hour drive each way well worth it.

This annual event, run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts every year,is just one example of the excitement in the Land Rover world. As you read elsewhere in this issue of the Rovers North News, this promises to be an exciting year for Land Rover enthusiasts, regardless of your choice of Land Rover. Here’s a personal wishto every reader for a safe and successful New Year. Winterwell!

Go Ahead - Supersize Me!By Craig Reece

Fries with Your Land Rover, Sir? Continuedpopulation, but for those to whom it appeals, it is perfectly plausible. Recycled, non-hydrogenated vegetable can be usedto power any diesel vehicle through a simple conversionprocess, which is based upon heating the vegetable oil so thatits viscosity becomes closer to the viscosity of diesel fuel.

Once I made the decision to get greasy [not hypoid, but veggiegrease -ed], I had to find a vehicle that I could convert. A number of my friends have Series Land Rovers, and the moretime I spent in them, the more I liked them. I had made up mymind to find myself a Series Land Rover and convert it to run on vegetable oil. However, as most Rover buffs know, a dieselSeries truck is a bit of a rarityhere in the United States. Soafter a month and a half of scouring, I felt like a 30-something watching singles ads. Then I met my match, a 1965 109”Series IIA ex-military 2.25 naturally aspirated diesel. It tookme only one dance with her, short as it may have been (Shewasn’t registered, so my test drive comprised some hot lapsaround the parking lot!), to know that this was the truck for me.Seeing that the truck already had two fuel tanks and tons ofroom for mounting the conversion components under the bon-net, the truck was the perfect candidate for a conversion, or soI thought.

A week later, the Veggie Rover saga began, as I hopped into myminivan to take her on her fairwell voyage. I left Newmarket,NH one Saturday morning to pick my cohort Justin Lillie inWhite River Junction, VT. From there we drove up to Rover’sNorth to pick up a new generator for the truck. From there, wereturned to Justin’s house to drop the minivan off and pick uphis 1967 88” Series II-A and finally to head down to Springfield,VT to pick up my new found love. By then it was four o’clockand we were half way to Springfield on Interstate 91, when Irealized that I had left the temporary plate in my minivan, nowparked at Justin’s house. We turned around and reversedcourse to pick up the missing license plate. Hours later wedeparted for Springfield, and this time we had every thing weneed, except for an abundance of day light.

By the time we arrived in Springfield, it was dark. Basking in thebeauty of a lunar eclipse, Justin and I took to the cold task ofinstalling the new generator into my truck, while it was parkedin a parking lot. It may seem odd, but I only had the weekend topick the truck up, so time was beginning to run low. That firstrepair would set the tone for any subsequent work that followed: outdoors, in a poorly lit parking lot and on a cold, late autumn night!

The Rover was in good shape but there were a few things that Ineeded to do in order to make the conversion possible. To my

dismay, the more I read, the more I found that a Series LandRover may not have been the ideal car for a vegetable oil conversion. First of all, the Lucas CAV rotary injector pumpdoes not have the most stalwart reputation when it comes tovegetable oil. However, if measures are taken to deliver thevegetable oil hot, clean, and free of water to the injector pump, the Lucas CAV works just fine. Therefore I added a 2 micron,200 watt, heated Racor fuel filter and water separator to myvegetable oil system. Then I had to replace the standard LucasC-40 30 amp generator with a 105 amp alternator to power thenew electrical additions to my truck, such as the heated fuelfilter, and the two auxiliary fuel pumps that I would have to add.

Another problem reared up due to the factthat the Land Rover as an external liftpump, which pushes the fuel from the fueltanks through the fuel filters and into theinjector pump. The mechanically drivenexternal lift pump that comes on the LandRover engine doesn’t have enough drawto pull fuel through the fuel filters; thus Ihad to add two electric fuel pumps to my

truck. The first pump, a 12 volt, diaphragm fuel pump, pushesthe diesel from the diesel tank through the diesel fuel filter andwater separator up to the injector pump. The vegetable oilpump is a bit heavier duty, a 12 volt Holley Blue fuel pump withthe external pressure regulator, pumps the thicker vegetable oilfrom the vegetable oil tankthrough the vegetable oil filter(Racor 640r122) and up to theinjector pump. Lastly, I replacedthe manual tank selector valvewith a 12 volt solenoid valve, which is operated by a toggleswitch that I have mounted onmy dash.

Once those components were in place, I began the wet andoften times messy task of plumbing in the heated vegetable oilline, coolant lines, and tank heater. It is advisable to drain yourcoolant before you carry out this step! To my good fortune, mytruck came equipped with two fuel tanks, thus I did not have toinstall a second tank. However I did have to cut a hole in oneof the two tanks and install a heater core into it. I tapped intothe heater loop and circulate engine coolant through the heatercore to warm the vegetable oil. The heated fuel line consist ofthree Teflon hoses (two .5” I.D. hoses for the coolant, and one.25” I.D. hose for the vegetable oil) encased in a PVC sheath. The heat from the engine coolant radiates into the vegetableoil, keeping it warm on its way to the injector pump.

Last but not least, I had to reroute the fuel return, as I did notwant to mix vegetable oil with my diesel fuel system. Therefore, I installed a 3-way valve which enables me to either

redirect the returned fuel back to the injector pump or to thediesel tank. The reason I added the 3-way valve instead of justlooping the return back into the injector pump’s fuel supply wasto ease the removal of air from the fuel system. This way, whenI change my diesel fuel filter, I can easily prime the system bysimply directing the fuel return back to the diesel tank and turning on the electric fuel pump.

“Does it work?” and “is it cost effective?” are probably two ofthe most frequently asked questions. I undertook this wholescheme at a difficult financial time in my life, I was 23 years old,I had just lost my high paying job of a U.S. pro cyclist and I hadjust returned school to finish my last semester of college. Thecomponents of the entire conversion, including the alternatorand its mounting bracket cost me a grand total of $500. To savemore money I chose to put the kit together on my own. As forthe cost of vegetable oil, there is none - it is free. Restaurantshave to pay about $1 per gallon to dispose of it, so generallyspeaking, they will happily give it away.

Over the 4,000 miles that I have put on my truck since I converted it, I have discovered that I use vegetable oil primarilyon trips that take fifteen minutes or more. I start my truck ondiesel, drive for about 5 min. and then switch to vegetable oil(the coolant temp. is about 150 degrees Fahrenheit). When I amabout 5-7 minutes from my destination, I switch back to diesel

in order flush the vegetable oil from the system. Thatbeing said, on a 100 mile drive on the highway, I usuallyend up running on diesel for about 10-12 minutes andon vegetable oil for about an hour and fifty minutes. You have to remember that we are talking about adiesel Series Rover, so in rolling terrain I can averagesomewhere in between 50-60 mph.

The Haynes Manual for my truck states that it getsabout 28 mpg on diesel. I have estimated conservatively that my truck gets somewhere around22-25mpg on diesel. I have not noticed any difference

in its fuel efficiency while running on vegetable oil, nor have Inoticed a loss of power. I drive my truck nearly every day, spring, fall, summer, winter, and so far so good.

The beauty of burning vegetable oil in lieu of diesel is that itgreatly reduces harmful emissions and greenhouse gasses.(CO2 is cut 100%. SO2 is cut 100%. Soot emissions are cut 40-60%) In addition to that, vegetable oil is a renewableresource, contrary to diesel fuel. Vegetable oil is certainly notgoing to solve our world’s dependency on diesel fuel, but it is astep in the right direction for those who want to take action intotheir own hands!

[Craig Reece, of Neoteric Biofuels inc. in Berkeley, CA, startedoff with a ‘73 Bronco and an ‘86 Land Cruiser before he finallygraduated to a ‘95 Defender 90. He, too, wanted to see if hecould convert his Rover tobio-diesel. Here’s the first partof his ingenious story -ed].

I enjoy off-roading and exploring the backcounty, rockcrawling, particularly inMoab, Utah, camping, andexpeditions, particularly toMexico and Central America, and I wanted a truck thatcould do all of this, comfortably, and with decentfuel mileage and with as closeto bulletproof dependability aspossible. Something I couldsleep in comfortably, withsome kind of on-boardkitchen, was another dream. Ago-anywhere, rockcrawling, dependable and cheap-to-drivemini-RV that had a mix of Series and Defender styling was whatI wanted. Oh yes, my other requirement was that it be economical on fuel. It soon became clear that if all these seemingly contradictory features were going to coexist in thesame vehicle, I’d have to have it built.

In 2001, my wife Anne and I had driven 9000 miles round-tripfrom Berkeley to Belize and Guatemala, as members of La RutaMaya expedition led by Sam Simpson of the Houston Land

Rover Club. We averaged 10-12 mpg, pushing the brick-likeDefender down the road with the 3.9 Land Rover V8, resulting ina fuel bill of close to $2000 - which was more than we spent onfood and lodging - including 3 nights at Frances Coppola’s

Blancaneaux resort on themountains of Belize(http://www.belizetravelcen-tral.com/blancaneaux.html) I’d started the diesel-repowerprocess prior to the trip, butmy fuel bill reinforced theneed for it!

Back in the fall of 2000, atCamp Rover West in Moab, Imet Shane Ballensky of RoverHybirds [see Vintage RoversAcross Africa article in theRovers North News from 2000-ed] and we decided I’dhire him to build my dieselRover. He was driving a

Defender 90 that he’d bought as a rollover. He had done all thebodywork and painting, plus fabricated gorgeous and beefycustom suspension components and bumpers. From the experience he was considering starting a business buildinghybrid and custom Land Rovers. I was to be his first customer. We drove my Defender 90 to the 2nd Twist Off in Fruita,Colorado the following spring, and further refined the dream ofthe new truck. Three years later I’ve got my truck (and it wasnot a full-time project for Shane, much to the relief of his walletand mine) and he now has a full-time business building custom

Rovers and components - when he’s not installing componentsfor my new business of converting diesel vehicles to run onvegetable oil - more on this later in the article. (You can see mytruck and his services at http://www.roverhybrids.com/)

Just before I left for Belize, Shane saw the perfect platform formy new truck for sale on the Rover’s North Bulletin Board -Arthur Patsouris, of the Rovers North Parts Department (hi,Arthur!) was selling a rolling chassis with 300 Tdi. Arthur hadbought someone else’s abandoned 100” Series/Defender project then decided he had too many Rovers of his own -including his Mercedes diesel-powered 109 ambulance. Shaneand I knew that the benefits of the extra wheelbase would begreat, since I was interested in a truck that would be capableoff-road, on-highway and on expedition. The 100” Discoverywheelbase is superior in most off-road situations to the 92-3/4”wheelbase of the Defender 90, and on the highway provides asmoother ride, and the extra room is useful in an expeditionvehicle.

I like the styling of Series and early Defenders, and had alreadybought a 1972 Series III 88. And since selling my Defender 90would help fund the buildup of the new truck, I sold theDefender and the buildup of the new truck began.

The Series III had a mostly-rotted frame, and so Shane cut offthe outriggers and crossmember from it and welded them ontothe Discovery frame.

[Rik Olsen, Hastings, MN, owns a 1960 Series II 88" SW. This pastyear, he found another enthusiast's dream - a Discovery SE 7 withthe 5-speed manual. Here's his story -ed].

Northern Minnesota is a fascinating part of the world dominated byflannel clad fourth generation Norwegians who still speak with anold world accent. Not surprisingly, people in Minnesota really liketo go "up north."

Our club, the Minnesota Land Rovers, schedules a yearly weekend"picnic" to drive the old logging roads in the woods and camptogether. Our typical site, Backus, Minnesota, has been under trailclosing threat this year. To forestall the possibility for a tarmaconly camp out this year, we chose Gilbert, Minnesota. It is a fascinating little town in the "Iron Range" of the great north woods.Nearby Hibbing is the birth place of Bob Dylan.

Gilbert is so interested in promotingoffroading in the region that it has created the first off highway vehicle recreation area in the stateof Minnesota. According to thecity's website (www.gilbertmn.org)the OHVRA includes "approximately1,200 acres in northern St. LouisCounty. This closed-off area features over 30 miles of recreational trails, scramble areas, training and special events facilitiesfor use by off road motorcycles, all terrain vehicles (ATV) and 4x4jeeps and trucks." They're strict about safety; there's even a techinspection. Still, they're encouraging off road clubs and groups toschedule events at their facility. It has taken a tremendous amountof work by the local clubs and individuals in partnership with theoutdoor recreational arm if the government to open this magnifi-cent recreational site.

The output of the region's taconite mines fed 75% of the US WorldWar II raw steel need, but those mines are in decline. There is adelightful restaurant named the Whistling Bird Cafe & Bar that features gourmet Caribbean food near the in-town camp called"Sherwood Forest." The off road site is 3 blocks from the mainstreet of town. From the campsite, there is a short dirt track thatleads to the Off Highway Vehicle site made for us by theDepartment of Natural Resources

In Land Rover terms, this has been a real milestone year for me. Ihave been interested in Land Rovers sincethe SUV craze started here in the states in themid to early 1990's. I'd longed for a 5 speedDiscovery, but graduate school and a verymobile lifestyle forced a delay. Once moreestablished, I was able to scrounge thechange for a Land Rover with real character:a 1960 Series II 88" SW with one functioningbrake cylinder and little else working well. Ibought her in 1998, the 50th anniversary year, and now, after 6 years, much reluctant education, and LOTS of parts, she's actually a presentable runner. This year, Ialso came across, in the newspaper, anotherreal enthusiast's car: 1996 Discovery SE7 5 speed. I can't imaginethe average SUV shopper wanting a stick shift with British reliability and leakablility. It really needed a proper home withsomeone who could understand it. After all, this is the car that gotme interested in Land Rovers in the first place! It cost less than Ioriginally paid for the 1960 Series Two, so I was not really worriedabout panel damage. It is a really nice feature to have drink holders, a back seat for the kids' car seats, air conditioning, anelectrical system that can power the strap-in DVD player, and theability to go over 50 mph! This is the right truck for a family weekend of off-roading 215 miles from home.

In the '80's and '90's, a loose social club of enthusiasts called theNorth Woods Land Rover Club formed to join people togetheroffroading. They were quite a bit more "Camel Trophy" than "TreadLightly." A more encompassing club, the "Upper Mississippi LandRover Group," or UMLRG for short, followed to meet the needs ofless off-road oriented enthusiasts. The name appropriate as theMississippi starts here in Itasca, Minnesota, but it was a bit of amouthful. Now, the Minnesota Land Rovers (http://www.mnlandrovers.org/) is a family club that is open to alllevels and interests. There are extreme trucks with intricate airsuspension systems and stock classics that never get dusty. For awhile, I even was a "non-owner" member! There is certainly something for everyone.

On a sunny cool Saturday in August, we met up at the Gilbert siteThe gracious ranger gave the free sound check ("go 'vroomvroom'") and stickered our windscreens to prove that we allpassed. We were each then issued a free day pass. This was tobe returned at the end of the day. If all of the slips were notreturned by 7:30, the ranger knew to go looking for someone stuck.

The trails were mostly red iron dust with deciduous and coniferforest around us. There were views of the nearby low mountains, and a trail for every level. Some were slow dirt roads, while others were shale moguls or boulder cobbled hills. There waseven a mud pit, hill climb, and rock crawl park. Our Discovery hada lovely time playing in the mud and creeping around in the woods. The most dramatic ride was a steep, winding shelf with a 100 footdrop off. Two elements added to the drama here: there was a rusting rolled Jeep at the bottom of the gorge, and this was my

wife, Kelly's first time driving off-road. "Puckerfactor 4!" was when a 1 foot hump on the up hillside tilted us for a better view down the hill. Itook no notice of this, but rather leaned up hill andprayed. I didn't even look at the inclinometer. Atthe bottom of the hill with all well and remarkablyclean undershorts, we began the ascent. Here'swhere we had an encounter between a small outcropped rock and our front right wing. At leastKelly was driving at the time.

Paul Eldredge has a similar Discovery and alsomade it through some tight spots. He reports:

"My harrowing adventure started when I turned righton the trail, when I should have gone straight. So, I amgoing down this rocky slope, and I was sliding andbouncing down the hill losing control. I came to a stopby hitting a tree and ending up at a weird angle, withmy wheels wedged between rocks.Miraculously therewas no damage to my vehicle. I was losing a lot ofsteering fluid, but that is normal. With the help of a lotof members I was able to back up a bit to straightenout. At that point, another car pulled me out and I then proceeded down the trail. I got stuck again, due to alarge rock, and then bent my steering rod and broke mydampener - still, no body damage. Yet another carpulled me out and we proceeded up the hill. Just then, Ihit my sill and bent my door. During the afternoon ride I

rode with Jeremy, we were nearly the lasttruck back and Jim Ryan and Innocent werelooking at my truck to see what they coulddo to fix my bent rod. Using skills learned30 minutes prior on John's steering rod, they used a Hi-Lift and a winch to pull itdown and back. The first funny thing wasthat the truck drove better back to the hotelthan before the damage. The really strangething is I no longer leak steering fluid andyes there is fluid in my vehicle."

The Saturday night fun was as you'd expect fromthese intrepid explorers and their young families and

spouses. In addition to the tipping of pints and scotch aroundcampfires, there is a raffle of Rover goodies. This year, the lootincluded the spiffy genuine factory jacket donated by Rover'sNorth! Another special addition was the Camel Trophy specDiscovery pinata! Talk about bashing about in the woods! Then, there are the awards.

Overall, our Discovery lost about 50 pounds of plastic bits and therotted out factory brush bar. Other minor tragedies were bentsteering bars on John Dougan and Paul Eldredge's trucks. However, the "broken axle award," given once a year to cushionthe blow of having the most damage, went to Adam Ruben. HisSouth American Spec Defender 110 blew a front differential onwhat was planned to be a gentle ride. He also slashed a tire andlost an alternator. I also would award him my Samaritan award for unreservedly digging under the front of my Discovery to reattachmy tow strap when we got stuck on a rock in the mud.

In summary, the Gilbert site is a great recreation for coilers orleafers. It is well run, and the trails are marked to predict the levelof difficulty. There is even a pressure sprayer area at the exit! That said, what really makes it a good time is the camaraderie ofthe Land Rover club members. We are planning to make this ayearly trip on our calendar of events, and would welcome visitorsfrom the rest of the Land Rovering community to join us next.

Working in the Iron Mine, Going on Down, Down

By Rik Olsen

Getting the outriggers in just the right locationswas one of the most exacting parts of the project- since we were using a Discovery frame and amix of Series and Defender body parts, includinga shortened Defender 110 tub (purchased fromLes’s Loft at Rovers North) and the Discoveryframe has a section height 1” shorter than thatof the Defenders. Shane needed to do a lot ofvery precise measuring and marking, using alaser level, to ensure that the outriggers were injust the right location. The confirmation of thecare he took, and his skill, is that the door-wingand door-tub alignment is as good or better thana Defender from the factory.

He also cut off the ears on the Disco frame andwelded on attachment points on the side of theframe for Heim-jointed and much stronger reartrailing links of his own design, and welded onframe sliders to the bottom of the frame, thenshortened the rear of the frame to give a rearoverhang/departure angle about mid-waybetween that of a Defender 90 and that of aDefender 110. He cut off the 3.9 V8 motor mountsand, using a jig from MD Engineering in the UK,located and welded on the 300 Tdi motor mounts. He fabricated 3/8” steel fuel tank skidplates forthe custom stainless 26 gallon rear tank and the12 gallon under-the-passenger-seat front tank, and we then had the frame and skidplates hot-dip galvanized. (I’d probably be fine inCalifornia without the galvanizing, but I plan toown this truck for the rest of my life, so....)

Next, the bodywork phase of the project started- we had the 110 tub, and purchased a usedDefender 110 roof and Defender 110 3-door windowless van sides. Shane shortened the 110tub, top and sides, and cut out the sides for sliding windows. We then had the tubRhinolyned , in black, including the underside, and had the inside of the 110 top sprayed withoff-white Rhinolining. We also sprayed the seatboxes and footwell panels with black Rynolining. He then painted the body Arles Blue, and the topAlpine white. We also designed and built thefront winchbumper, the rear bumper, and therock sliders, which double as air tanks for theARB air lockers.

The 300 Tdi engine is stock, except for the vegetable-oil fuel modifications - more on thatlater - but fitted with a full-width Allard intercooler, and with a pyrometer to record EGT’s(exhaust gas temperatures) - very important witha diesel being pushed hard on the highway. Iretained the stock trap oxidizer, for the cleanestpossible emissions profile, and Shane fitted astainless NRP exhaust system to the trap oxidizer. Most of the miscellaneous bits weneeded to complete the 300 Tdi conversion were supplied by Rovers North, along with many bodyand interior parts. Rovers North sells every 300Tdi part that Land Rover makes, which isextremely handy.

I’ll describe the rest of drivetrain and other features in the next issue.

It’s early morning and Sightings editor Jac’Kiye McCollettreports that “I’m tucked away at my desk. The fire is going, acup of flavored coffee awaits me and the Thanksgiving Turkeyjust flew in with a large parcel full of your Sightings that I’manxious to compile. What a glorious place New England is thistime of year - aside from scraping the frost off your windshieldand making sure your remote car starter works. As I readthrough the dozens of Sightings I smile, knowing how many ofyou play such a big part in Rovers North. It’s wonderful seeingnew names, as well as familiar names. Thank you for makingmy job worthwhile!” “Now that I’ve displayed my nice side, theEditor tells me I must remind you of the Sightings rules:”

Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We reward only thoseSightings that capture the unique qualities of Land Rovers andtheir owners, and display them in an distinctive way.

Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surprise you, it won’tsurprise us, either, and thus we can’t award you a mug. We’redelighted, but not surprised, that Land Rovers appear in Britishtelevision programs, British publications, films with Britishthemes, and shows about African safaris. You shouldn’t be surprised, either, and should consider looking for other ways toget a coffee mug.

Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publication, we closeoff the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned the Sighting in an earlierissue, we won’t mention it again. If you’re new to the familyof Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sightingin an earlier issue.

Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If you qualify, onemug per Sighting per issue.

Rule #5 - Sightings that are Land Rover references in books goto our Literary Land Rover editor for mention, but only whenspace permits.

Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name and address becauseof atrocious penmanship, we can’t recognize your Sighting norsend you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can’tsend a mug by e-mail. Send us your real name and shippingaddress, too.

Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editor admits he mightmake an error. Let me know if you think you’ve been jobbed, butall decisions of the Editor are final.

Music is such an important part of our lives, regardless of thegenre, and what could be better than hopping in your LandRover, throwing on some tunes and riding as far as you can, before running out of gas, of course!Or could it be what Andy Duligall, Plainfield, NJ, noticedwhile browsing his CD collection. A Bryan Adams CD entitled “So Far So Good”. Mr. Adams is sitting atop his LandRover, smiling of course, and who wouldn’t be Andy, Of course,Bryan Adams is British and owns Land Rovers, so we’d expecthim to use one in his photo shoot.

Mary Dickerson, Jacksonville, NC, catches a Discovery prominently displayed midway through an OutKast Video. Thesong “Prototype” she considers, although it has an extra-terrestrial theme, it’s placement reinforces Land Rover’s“universal” appeal. The Warren Brothers Video “BarelyFamous”, which can be seen on CMT. The video features ablack NAS Defender 90 with a CD/audio/radio and sports BFGoodrich all terrain tires. Robert Wollschlager, Mystic, CT,writes to us with this. I wonder if they need some chains forthose tires?

In other news, CNN broadcasts a couple of stories with LandRovers gracefully augmenting their coverage. This first onecomes to us from Anne Ritter, Charlottesville, VA, where shespots a funeral home outside of London that use Defender 110’sas their hearse. She also tells us the owner was quoted sayingthat her clients were tired of the typical hearse and wanted tobe carried to their final resting place in a vehicle that fit theirpersonalities. It seems there is a waiting list to use that particular funeral home. Now the question is, who would wait?

Another CNN Sighting shows a nice front shot of a Series llA,wading along a flooded waterfront street in St. Augustine, asthey were broadcasting reports on Hurricane Francis. At leastthat’s what Matt Wallace, Asheville, NC, believes he saw. Healso tells us there is a ‘67 llA for sale at the local supermarket.Don’t forget the beer Matt! Peter King, Signal Mtn, TN, alsowatched and tells us how the Series was pushing a bumper full

of water. “You didn’t see any Disco’s doing that,” Peter claims.

Kim Conn, Snohomiah, WA, Matthew Kosaber, Johnston,PA, and little Alex Hart, New London, CT, all found the irony in seeing a woman getting gas for her Discovery using herDiscover card. We’ve reported this before but we want to give“credit” where “credit” is due.

Nobody likes to see a Land Rover in imminent danger, unless of course they’re in therunning for a coveted Rovers North coffee mug. In a Citigroupad a Defender stands proud as it’s about to be smashed to bitsby a larger than life boulder. Rick Askew, Seattle, WA, PatHarris, Westport, CT, David Tow, Portland, OR, JohnSchleis, Eagen, MN, and Jeff Foland, Clarksville, OH will bereceiving a mug for this bizarre, cruel and unfortunate Sighting. In real life, we know the boulder would be smashed tosmithereens!

Giovanni Lanzante, Englewood, CO, shares seeing a“ZEBRA STRIPED” 110 hosting visitors on a safari during aRoyal Caribbean commercial. I may have to book that cruise.

Chris Estey, Yorktown, VA, takes to the sky in a Ski Salt Lakead. A white Discovery ll heads up the side of a beautiful snow covered ski slope. You can see a close-up view of this in DeltaAirline’s October Sky magazine.

Chuck Cline, Princeton, WV, directs our attention towards alovely Land Rover on the cover of Outside Magazine. Chrisinforms us he owns a ‘98 Disco l, ‘94 Range Rover Classic, a ‘73Series lll and his newest addition EX-MOD Defender 110.

Supermodel Elsa Benitez poses with a surfboard beside a whiteDefender 90 soft top in the Sports Illustrated 40th Anniversaryswimsuit issue. Mark Lawson, Bellevue, Iowa, tells us “bothElsa and the vehicle appear to be in good condition”

Brian Eberts, Dunsford, Ontario, Canada, spies a gorgeous gladiator girl in front of what looks like a classic Land Rover inthe Wurth Canada Limited’s 8th month of their calendar. Hewonders what the Rover adds to this image. Ah- a Rover enthusiast who can overlook a scantily-clad woman in favor ofthe Land Rover.

A white 93-95 Range Rover Classic takes the stage in theepisode of CSI Miami “Under the Influence”. It seems theRange Rover was involved with the murder of a man but laterChris Laimit, Highlands Ranch, CO and Jason Fudge,Tallahassee, FL discover the perpetrator tried (but failed) to carjack the Rover from an inebri-ated man. It would have been nice if the series hero had driventhe Range Rover instead of the villain.

It’s always wonderful to see your children as excited to spot aRover as you may be, this next Sighting comes from AndrewKaan and his son Austin, Fairchild AFB, WA. They spotted acouple of Defender 110’s in the movie Italian Job, also in themovie Sabrina, Harrison Ford drives Sabrina in a Range Rover. We’ve mentioned these before but they’re such fun that we want toshare them again.

Although they cannot receive mugs, I must report that my children Loryn (age 15), Matthew (age14), Michael(age 14), and John (age 13) came running in my room oneevening begging me to turn on the TV. Apparently a Land Roverwas the star of the show on a recent episode of King of the Hill.I did manage to see the Rover and was proud of how well theyknew their Land Rovers! The show also starred Henry Winkler;for, me seeing him on a horse instead of a motorcycle sent onlyone word through my head.....AYEEEE!!!!! Bernie Norman,Parlin, NJ, and Desinie Smith, Robsinia, PA, also spotted thesame episode. They’ll get mugs because they’re not my children.

Toys R Us.com has an interesting Bratz wild Life Safari Cruiserthat Katie Spurr, St. Louis, MO says although modified toavoid licensing issues it sure looks like a Rover to her. All itneeds are some stickers and some chipmunks to drive it aroundand it will be perfect!

The Winter TravelSmith Catalogue is chuck-a-block-full of LandRovers! On the cover, states, Jim Gensler [see rule #6] sits a110 up to its bonnet in savannah. William Prillaman,Irvington, VA, also views a quarter shot of a Defender. RobertSedivy, Richmond, VA, spots a well equipped D110, with raisedair intake, full roof rack and A-bar with lights. Rob Modica,Tucson, AZ, sights a LHD Series III 88” with a sun shield butwithout an Alpine window. David Stoll, Galway, NY andBrant Fagan, Charlestown, NH are also “Sighters”.

David Woo, Santa Monica, CA, and Ron Ward, Columbus,GA, both write in with a wonderful shot of an inside view of anearly RHD complete with a cuddly dog wearing a pair ofBlundstone boots sold at Sugar River Outfitters. I wonder if thedog passed the written portion of his driving exam.

The New York Daily Times shows a Land Rover, a smiling manand happy woman on some sort of jungle adventure; I wonder if they are viewing baby lion cubs?Michael Beaudette, New York, NY sent in this Sighting.

Gregg Fallavollita, Fontana, CA, submits an article abouttraveling to the Andes Mountains which has a picture of an oldSeries parked in front of a lodge. Arthur Judd, Sanger, CAspied this Rover as well.

Robert Sandlak, Apopka, FL has sent in a Sighting from theOrlando Sentinel Newspaper a Land Rover crashed through a floor, yet managed to be successful in resisting any damage.

A postcard containing a 90 kronor stamp has been sent in to usby Gary Forehand, Manassas Park,VA, featuring a Defender110 trekking across the snow.

Next we find a Land Rover up to its windows in water in theEmergency Response 2004 brochure. Robert Di Piero,Stockton, CA; better call 911 or else he’ll have a flood on hishands.

Art Judd, Sanger, CA, writes in with his first attempt to scorea mug. He says on the front cover of the Fresno Bee is a Serieslll 109 loaded with gear, parked in front of an Ecuadorian cattleranch turned eco-lodge. It sure made the story interesting tome.

A soldier from the Queens Dragoon guards warns an Iraqi driver during a lightning storm to keep his headlights off toavoid being hit by enemy fire as a British army convoy travelsovernight from Basra to join the Black Watch Battle group atCamp Dogwood, 20 miles south of Baghdad. Rommel Ong,Cypress, CA, saw this on the news. Incidentally he owns a 1960Series II that he is getting ready to restore. One sighting fromthe BBC comes from Guy Amos, Hollis, NH who thinks thisshowing was “one helluva boost for Land Rovers in Iraq.”

The Mini Boden Catalogue features a nice Series Rover in theirlatest issue. Anna Krusic, Orangeburg, NY, Jeff Clark,Hingham, MA, and Ted Aman, Rochester, NY all take notice ofthe two darling children posing in their Army attire.

Tis’ the season for spying Land Rovers and this next Sighting isno exception. Brian Riley, Minneapolis, MN sends us TheHoliday 2004 Athleta catalogue, which includes a nice 109”Series llA pickup cab. He owns a ‘67 Series llA 88” stationwagon. Well Brian you’ll have your mug in time for Christmas!

Jeff Bang, Staunton, VA, Wonders why the Range RoverClassic is behind the Lexus on the cover of Land Rover ClubMagazine. I wondered the very same thing.

The October issue of Mountain Gazette catches our attentionwith this fabulous white Land Rover gracing the cover. JeffSpooner, Rolla, MO and Chris Davis, Boulder, CO, climb tothe top of our winners list with this sighting.

It seems Santa has traded in his sleigh for a Series Land Rover! The ad from a recent REI catalogue shows the capable Seriesvehicles in one of its favorite elements...the snow. All up for a mug are Keith Gates,Houston, TX, Cory Allen, Battle Ground, WA, WilliamStewart, McMinnville, OR, Angie Lucas, Appleton, WI,Mike Doidge, Kapolei, HI, Cheryl Cramer, Boise, ID andAnnie Sisk, Bozeman, MT. Annie and Cheryl now have some-thing to gloat about when your husbands are present. Welldone, ladies!!

September’s Financial Times Newspaper shows a BritishArmored vehicle passing a Land Rover which was ambushednear Basra. Michael Beckley, Sheridan, OR sends in thishorrific photo.

Another dog in aRover comes to usfrom ScottBradfield, Arlington,VA. What could bebetter than man’s bestfriend inside man’sbest truck? The folksat Orvis certainlyknow how to dress uptheir holiday catalog.

On behalf of the Minnesota Land Rover Club,we would like to thank you for your very generous donation to our club The contributionfrom Rovers North helped make our annual picnic a great success. During the drawings wehad prizes during the picnic the item fromRovers North was the first to go. The LandRover factory jacket almost didn’t make it to thepicnic. I had my eye on it, but instead I orderedone after the picnic in my size. Thank youagain for your support for our club.

Dear Rovers North,

As I was returning from Hawaii and had justseen numerous Land Rovers, especially newRange Rovers, the saying “The worlds mostwell-traveled vehicles on earth” seemed moreof a statement of fact than just a motto.

Chris Estey,Yorktown, VA

[We agree completely, but we wonder, whyLEAVE Hawaii to return anywhere? -ed]

Dear Rovers North,

A coworker of mine recently made a trip toIceland, where they drove completely aroundthe country (not in a Land Rover, alas) butreported seeing many Land Rovers. I myselfspent a year in Iceland back in 1973 with theU.S. Coast Guard and did get around a little inan old Jeep CJ that was sort of barracks community property. At that time, Volkswagenswere most plentiful, but Land Rovers Series andMini’s were also much desired by the locals.Iceland is truly a beautiful, pristine land of fireand ice, and someday I’d love to visit again.

Yours Truly,Gary Forehand,Manasass Park, VA

[You might remember that Kevin Girling of LandRover Enthusiast magazine shared a terrificstory on Land Rovers in Iceland with us a couple of years ago. Go to www.LandRoverEnthusiast.com tofind back issues of that magazine -ed].

Dear Mark,

Another Land Rover in an ad for South Africaappeared in the National GeographicAdventure Magazine. No real surprise to seeanother Land Rover with its front window fold-ed down, headed out across the savannah. The real surprise is that a truck that is at least35 years old, continues to be the vehicle theywant to use to carry a message about whatSouth Africa has to see, and an old LandRover to see it in. It is a tribute to the lastinglegacy that the Land Rover has made in a country that it has been such a part of the landscape. They choose a very old truck tocarry a message that anything else would notdo as well....maybe not do at all.

Thanks Mark..bumpin’ along down the road,Leighton Ogg,Houston, TX

[Good point, Leighton. We know that LandRovers and African development have a pow-erful visual and emotional connection -ed].

Rovers North,

One of the perks my son Jamey has as a seniorin high school this year is the ability to pick hisfavorite parking spot and decorate the concrete stop as he chooses. He wanted hisparking spot to reflect his taste in vehicles (his‘74 Series lll 88’)

Thanks,Charles Harrell

[What a lovely zebra striped parking spot, andthe ever familiar Land Rover logo puts him in aclass of his own. We assume he earned an“A.” -ed]
