This unique vehicle, conceived in 1947 as a stop-gap measure by a company desperate for export sales, became a rolling mirror in which Great Britain saw only its best qualities, rugged, substantial, useful, yet elegantly engineered.The Land Rover symbolized the nostalgic aspirations and harsh realities of post-war Great Britain. Farmers loved it for its utilitarian simplicity. Imperial administrators required its spaciousness in India and Africa. Sportsmen found it could tow horse trailers with ease. Oil company workers, scientists and big game hunters used them throughout the Empire. Suburban mothers could bus up to 12 children anywhere. Landed gentry, construction supervisors, and utility boards swamped the surprised officials at the Solihull factory with orders. The distinctive profile of the vehicle, a combination of square-shouldered ruggedness and airy lightness, conjures up instant images of African safaris, Sahara Desert crossings, and off-road expeditions.The same vehicle appears at Ascot, carrying sportsmen and their ladies, while towing their splendid horses.The royal Family cavorts around Balmoral in Land Rovers.The Pope uses one on Papal visits. Many of you have read my posts on the Rovers North and DiscoWeb bulletinboards, and some have corresponded with me on various topics. For those whodon’t know me – I manage J E Robison Service – on the web at www.robison-service.com – an independent Land Rover specialist shop in Springfield,Massachusetts. I’ve worked continuously with Land Rovers since their re-intro-duction to North America some fifteen years ago. In my column, I can answeryour questions at greater length than is possible on the bulletin boards. Eachissue, I will take on a few of the interesting questions I receive or will addressa topic of interest to Land Rover owners.

I am a longtime Land Rover owner. I’ve had many Land Rovers over the years,and currently have a 2000 Range Rover P38A, a 1996 Discovery I, and a 1966Series. My father has a 1995 Range Rover Classic, and my brother has a 2003Discovery II. So we’re a Land Rover family.

Welcome to the fall edition of Robison on Rovers. In this columnI’d like to talk about selection of a good shop for your Land Rover.At some point, all of you will need one.

Many of you reading my columns here are do-it-yourselfers. I’m allfor that! Fixing your own Land Rover teaches fortitude and selfreliance. When your truck breaks down in the middle of nowherethere’s no substitute for being able to help yourself. Faced with abreakdown on a desolate mountain top some of us will rise to thechallenge and motor home, while others will sit helplessly as nightfalls and the denizens of the woodland close in and carrion eatingbirds circle above.

A person who can handle any repair on his Land Rover will havethe confidence and basic skills to handle many other challengeslife may throw at him. Such a person will remain unruffled whenfaced with clogged toilets, minor electrical fires, or leaky roofs. Allof us encounter such things in life.

But until you arrive upon this plateau – master of Land Rovers,electricity and plumbing – you will need to engage the services ofa repair shop to keep your trusty Land Rover running. I’d like tooffer some suggestions to help accomplish this.

The first thing I’d like to talk about is attitude. Many times I hearquestions like “how can I get my car fixed without getting rippedoff?” The implication is that repair shops are dishonest, and youneed to protect yourself. In my experience, nothing is farther fromthe truth. Very few shops set out each morning to cheat their cus-tomers, despite people’s opinions to the contrary.

Crooked repair shops and crooked mechanics are very rare. Butwell intentioned mechanics that lack the skills to do the job right– they are all too common. I cannot tell you how many times I’veseen trucks come in with cross members left off “because theyweren’t necessary”; check engine lights removed because “theyjust kept coming on”; paperclips in the fuse box because “the fusejust keeps blowing.” All those things and more result from a lackof skill or knowledge on the part of the person fixing the car.Many of these things are dangerous, all can be costly. How toavoid them?

Start by identifying shops in your vicinity that fix Land Rovers.How do you do this? Here are a few suggestions: Call RoversNorth and ask if they know a good shop near you. They deal withshops all over the country. Ask your local Land Rover club. Lookat the list of Land Rover shops online at www.bushducks.com.Look at the Cartalk site - www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/

Once you have found a shop (hopefully you will find several), thenext step is a handshake. Meet the people who are going to befixing your pet. Before you bring your Land Rover to a new shop Isuggest you interview them for the job of fixing your Land Roverjust as you’d interview someone for a job. Don’t be bashful – thisis an important step! Why do they want to fix Land Rovers? Whatare their qualifications? How long have they done it? Do theyhave references? I have been servicing Land Rovers since theyreturned to America, and potential clients ask me these questionsevery week.

I’d like to stress that the most important factor in having a goodservice experience is good communication with the repair shop.You need to feel confident that they care about your concerns,they understand them, they are smart, resourceful, and they cansolve your problems. Well, at least your car problems.

Each make of car has its quirks and idiosyncrasies, Land Rovermore than most. It is imperative that you find someone who

knows their way around these cars. Experience with Chevrolet orMazda will not prepare someone to fix the ABS system or the airsuspension on your Range Rover. Look for people who have train-ing and certification. ASE is one organization that tests and certi-fies auto technicians. Land Rover also certifies dealer technicians.

You can learn a lot by asking the shop manager about the shop’spolicies. Can they take you in the shop and show you what’swrong with your truck? Will they give you a tour of the place?Can they explain how the systems on your Rover work? Ideally,you will find people with a passion for Land Rovers.

When you arrive at a new shop, have a look around. If you’re neatand clean look for a shop that’s neat and clean too. If you treatyour Rover with respect bring it to a shop where the technicianstreat things with similar respect. Do you mind your interior get-ting a little messy? Well, dirty footprints on the floor won’t matternow, will they? Are there other Land Rovers in the yard? It’salways comforting to be one of many. There’s nothing more dis-concerting than being the only Range Rover in a service depart-ment parking lot full of Hyundais and Mitsubishis.

Ask about parts – does the shop use genuine parts or aftermarket?Do they offer a choice? There is more than price to the selectionof parts for your Land Rover. A good shop will have a parts philos-ophy that matches yours, and they will be able to advise you well.I’m not going to presume to tell you what parts YOU should use,because people have different priorities. You may want the leastexpensive brake job, while your friend may want maximum stop-ping power for the mountains. And I may want long pad life, andmy father may want brake pads that don’t cover his wheel rims indust. A good shop is one that can accommodate all those individ-ual desires.

What about price? Most shops bill out labor and parts individual-ly. Labor charges may be based upon the actual time worked – as

at our shop - or they may be derived from a labor estimatingguide. The latter group of shops are called “flat rate” shops. Suchshops may press their technicians to “beat the book time” to makemore money and quality can suffer as a result. It pays to knowhow your shop bills time. Parts can vary in price from shop toshop depending upon the brand of part used. A Genuine LandRover brake rotor may cost $68 from the dealer. An independentthat has to pay more may charge $75.Another shop may use alower quality aftermarket part for $50. Yet another shop may use ahigher performance cross-drilled aftermarket rotor for $99. I’mnot advocating one over the other – just know what you are get-ting.

Shops do two kinds of work – maintenance and repair.Maintenance is the regular changing of oil, the replacement oftires, the replacement of wiper blades and the many other thingsfound in the factory maintenance schedule. You should be able toget a price in advance for most routine maintenance jobs.Remember that the price may vary if differing grades of parts areused. For example, a fluid service with Mobil 1 or Amsoil will bemore expensive than one with pertrolium base oil.

When comparing prices for such services keep in mind the possi-ble differences in labor, parts, and also the scope of work. What’sthat? Here’s an example: One place may quote a brake job with

new pads and rotors for $400. They’ve been taught to replacepads and rotors together. Another shop – more conscious of budg-et – measures the rotors and finds them re-usable. They quote$200 for pads only. Is the $400 quote a rip-off? No. It’s a higherprice for a more comprehensive job. The more costly job will cer-tainly stop more quietly and smoothly, and it will last longer. Doyou want to pay $200 more for the better job? That’s up to you.When comparing prices make sure you are comparing comparableservices.

Repair is another matter. Repair prices often cannot be deter-mined in advance. When someone comes in with a rough runningRover with a check engine light on the first thing they may say is“how much to fix my check engine light?” I say “the first step willbe for us to test your car, to find out what’s wrong. Once weknow what’s wrong we can figure out what the repairs will cost.”In some cases an iterative process is required to reach this point.For example, you may need to charge the battery to make atowed-in truck crank over. At that point you may need to replacethe water pump so the vehicle can be driven. And only at thatpoint do you discover that the head gaskets were blown fromoverheating and the truck needs a $1,500 repair in addition to thework already done.

You can help yourself by giving a good description of your car’sproblem. When does it run rough? You say:“Only on cold rainydays.” This simple statement could save you several wasted hourswhen you bring your car in on a hot dry summer afternoon.

Any shop with standard hand tools can do basic service – oilchanges, brake pad replacement, muffler replacement, tune ups. Ifyour Land Rover was made before 1993 you will find most any-thing can be done with a standard tools. However, if you own alate model Land Rover you will find special tools are needed fordiagnosis and repair.

Special Land Rover electronic testers are needed to fix the gadgetson newer trucks. ABS, SRS, EAS, ETC, climate control – these aresome of the systems that can only be diagnosed with specialistequipment. Some of you may not even know what these systemsare, but when they quit most of you will notice.

OBD II scan tools will not access the systems above. They are lim-ited to accessing fault codes from the engine management system,and they are limited in that area when compared with specialisttools.

There are three test systems on the market. Omnitec Interromakes the T4 systems used by Land Rover dealers. Two independ-ent firms, Rovacom and Autologic, make aftermarket test systemswith similar capabilities. Any full-service Land Rover specialistyou interview should have one of these systems.

The tools are no use to a technician without manuals with testinfo, repair procedures, and specifications. Printed workshop man-uals are available for most Land Rovers. Land Rover has consoli-dated all the 1994-2003 manuals onto a CD kit they call RAVE.Last year Land Rover began delivering bulletins and other data viaonline subscription. The system they use is called GlobalTechnical Reference – GTR. You can check out the service atwww.landrovertechinfo.com

I knew this run was going to be something different. After get-ting instructions on safety and proper convoy rules we headedout.

A quick highway run brought us to the trailhead, we were inthe mountains. The light grade forest track brought us to thefirst hill climb of the day. I was shocked at how steep the trailwas, but the trucks just drove up like it was no big deal.Unfortunately, our climb was cut short by a broken heater core.This filled the inside of the truck with hot coolant and fogged upthe windshield so bad you couldn’t see out. Fortunately, wewere able to bypass the core and scrounge up enough water tosafely get up the hill. The rest of the morning was filled withtrails and challenges that really surprised me. With Buzz’s handsignals to guide my wheels we tackled all the obstacles withoutso much as a scratch.

Unfortunately our truck continued to build up pressure andblow out all its water. Martin, Heather and Buzz really helped outto make sure we had enough fluids and got off the mountainokay. Martin even gave up a gallon of windshield washer fluid tothe cause. We skipped the afternoon trails and went on ahead tothe winery to let the truck cool off. Soon the rest of the driversshowed up for some wine tasting and the best homemade truf-fles I’ve ever had. All the drivers got prizes from the vendorswho supported this event.

I really appreciate all the hard work Pamela and Buzz putinto this event. Their hard work and the sponsor’s generositymade the day. We are the only women’s event of this kind in theUnited States and it was really great to be part of it. Thanks!

From Shirley VanderVeenMy daughter Debbie and I drovedown from Seattle to participate inthe Spring Women’s Run.This wasmy first Women’s Run and the firsttrip to the Tillamook Forest. Ialways enjoy driving my Discoverybut to experience the forest roadsand trails in the company of otherwomen drivers and my daughterwas a special treat.We had a verygood selection of terrain to cover -challenging - but not threatening.The two courses I found the mostinteresting were the very steepdownhill and the rock pile. Forboth of these Pamela just coun-seled us to trust our trucksbecause they were designed tohandle the abuse! When we met acaravan of Jeep’s on one ofthe forest roads (they pulled overand stopped for us) it was reallyfun to wave hello and watch their faces as Land Rovers afterRange Rovers after ‘Lil Red [the author’s Land Rover - ed], all cap-tained by women, passed by. My only question is,“When can Isign up for the Fall Women’s Run?”

From Nancy KlussSpeaking from the perspective of a relative novice, I highly rec-ommend women drivers taking the opportunity to participate ina Women’s Run. I have driven in three of them now and it isgreat fun, beautiful scenery, wonderful company, and a few chal-lenges as well! This spring was no exception. I discovered thatmy confidence level goes way up when I have maneuvered overmassive rocks and through deep muddy gullies, squeaked bytrees with no scrapes to the paint, climbed up steep hills andback down again. One finds out quickly how well a Rover reallycan manage over all types of terrain! I thoroughly enjoy theopportunity to explore some of the beautiful Pacific Northwestscenery that our journeys have taken us on. The views of moun-tain peaks and valleys have been breath taking from some of thevantage points we have gotten to.

The women that have come on these runs come with a vari-ety of experience in driving these rigs and the courses that PamPetroff has setup have allowed us all to have a safe and fun timewhile having the opportunity to experience some exciting chal-lenges as well. No matter what your level of expertise in drivinga Land Rover is, women really can enjoy this great outdoor expe-rience and the camaraderie is great!

Heather Morris-TuipAfter participating in my first Woman’s Run last fall, I could hard-ly wait for the Spring Woman’s Run. It’s not every day that I getto command the Rover and the husband doesn’t get to say a

thing. He continues to complain to this day that I drove tooclose the bushes on the passenger side, but fails to notice thecorrelation of these occurrences with his commentary on mydriving skills.

I was not expecting the type of trails we drove on (completenaive) and was not even sure that I had the skills to keep fromdenting up the Rover. I surprised myself on my skills as a driveras well as just what a stock Ranger Rover with an air dam couldhandle.

My most favorite part of the trail was the forest bit where wehad to maneuver between trees with just an inch or so to spare.Be off just a little bit on your measurements and the trees wouldbe sporting shiny new black paint. But probably the most funwas the hill descent. I have a new healthy appreciation for myseat belt as I slid down the hill in low, first gear with my foot onthe brakes [but gently, we hope - ed]. Without my seat belt Iwould have been plastered to the inside of my windshield - that’show steep the hill was. It was fun because you knew that noth-ing could go wrong, but you still had those butterflies in yourstomach.... just like a rollercoaster ride.

I learned a lot from the trip, about my own skills, the Rover’sskills and just how much water (or any other fluids!?!) a blownheater core require. We went home and promptly bought a 5gallon jerry-can after experiencing what happens when youdon’t have a jerry-can and need large amounts of water.

Ending the trip at a winery was perfect. It gave me a chanceto sample the wines and let the husband drive home, but notbefore we all had some good laughs about the guys with theirdecked out Jeeps and Broncos who were totally amazed by thegirls in their stock Land Rovers conquering “their” trails.

From Junko ChandlerMy requirements for camping are flush toilets, hot showers, andnice soft sheets, so there are some events where Buzz, my hus-band, must pretend he is a bachelor for the weekend. But weboth have participated in just about every Women’s Run (alwaysin the sweep truck position) helping everyone along. I am reallysurprised at what I can do with my driving ability as time hasgone along. This Spring’s run really had some difficult placesthat I would never have gone if it were not for the group goingthere and Buzz talking me through it.There was one steep hillgoing down I was very scared, but Buzz said to just put it in lowrange 1st gear and take my foot off the brake and leave it off !!!! I thought he was crazy, we are going to die !!!!!! But, he wasright. Our Disco just crept down the hill in full control. Justamazing!

Always being in the sweep position has been interesting.This year we had one truck with radiator problems and westopped frequently to help them keep going. I never thought Iwould see water from the rock quarry with little fish in it beingpoured into a Land Rover radiator !!!! But it worked !!! Also, Iremember Martin, Heather’s husband, who helped also and hecarried a huge plastic box filled with water up to the road fromthe pond and he was really wet. I thought my husband was theonly Land Rover crazy person, but it seems I was wrong after see-ing what everyone did to keep water in the truck with problems.That’s why I like going on the Women’s Run. Lots of help in caseof trouble!

Land Rover North America announced U.S. pricing for its all-new SUV, the LR3. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the SE model will be$44,995, while the HSE model will retail for $49,995. All modelswill feature Land Rover’s innovative Terrain Response™ technology,a powerful 300 hp V8 engine and the Range Rover-inspired, four-corner, cross-linked air suspension, solidifying LR3’s outstandingon and-off-road performance.

“The all-new LR3 is the most technologically advanced, boldest,Land Rover ever launched in the history of the company,” saidRichard Beattie, executive vice president, Land Rover NorthAmerica. “This premium SUV, with its exceptional versatility andcapability, is an excellent value considering the amount of feature,content and innovation Land Rover is bringing to the market.”

Available in SE and HSE derivatives, LR3 offers the advantages of apowerful and responsive 300 hp 4.4-liter V8 engine, mated to a six-speed electronic automatic transmission. This transmission is intel-ligent - adapting its shift patterns to driving style and road condi-tions - and equipped with Command Shift™, allowing the driverfull control over gear changes. Special consideration has beengiven to ensure the powertrain meets Land Rover’s exacting stan-dards for on-and off-road capability.

LR3 sets an impressive benchmark for future Land Rover productswith its new platform architecture and numerous technologicaladvancements. The new, Land Rover-developed, Integrated Body-frame™ architecture provides a stable foundation for refined on-road performance, while maintaining the off-road qualities essentialto every Land Rover vehicle. Careful design and packaging has keptthe overall height of the vehicle down, and has positioned the bulkof the vehicle’s mass as low as possible, further adding to the out-standing on-road dynamics.

LR3’s all-new Terrain Response™ system is the latest developmentin four-wheel drive technology. By optimizing the vehicle’s sophisti-cated systems, Terrain Response™ allows the driver to choosefrom a variety of terrain settings, thus providing flexible and auto-matic control of the vehicle in all conditions, both on-and off-road.Not only does this help ensure that operation on a range of surfacesis safe and pleasurable, but it minimizes any environmental impactof off-pavement driving.

The electronically-controlled air suspension system providesincreased versatility and comfort. With automatic load-leveling andmultiple modes (access, standard and off-road) the suspensionallows for a softer spring setting in normal driving conditions, andversatility in others. The Range Rover-inspired cross-linking airsprings allow for outstanding off-road performance by maximizingground contact.

The interior package is among the most versatile and accommodat-ing in its class. The cabin of the LR3 is designed to allow maximumcomfort for all passengers - even in the third row. When equipped,the third row of seats is capable of accommodating two 95th per-centile adults. In addition, the alpine roof - driver’s sunroof andfixed glass over rows two and three - adds to the feeling of spa-ciousness throughout the interior.

LR3 is available in eight standard colors: Chawton White, BonattiGrey, Alveston Red, Java Black, Adriatic Blue, Zambezi Silver, MayaGold and Tonga Green. All colors currently exist in the Land Rovercolor palate except for Tonga Green, which has been introduced forthe 2005 LR3.

All LR3 models come highly equipped with a list of desirable fea-tures and innovative technologies. In addition to the base level ofcontent, the HSE adds a touch-screen, voice-activated navigationsystem, 600-watt audio system, 19”alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon head-lamps and memory seats. Full details of trim specifications will bereleased closer to launch. Sales for LR3 will commence this fall.

When the Old North State Land Rover Society was conceived,there was only one member. It was October of 1996, and he hadjust returned from a visit to the Mid-Atlantic Rally, hosted by theRover Owners Association of Virginia each year. Talking withenthusiasts there he discovered that North Carolina did not have aLand Rover organization. It didn’t seem right not to have one sohe conceived of “The Old North State Land Rover Society.” Thename made sense. He also thought that it should not be called aclub, but rather a society instead. Society seemed to suggest agroup of individuals bound by a common respect, a group thatwould set the standard for civility, honesty, and fun. The term soci-

ety also suggests inclusiveness. In a club, it might seem too easy toisolate people by skill level, or by any number of things that are inthe end divisive. The only limit placed on members is a love ofLand Rovers.

Originally, we tried to do without officers or rules -other than courtesy and respect for each other and to the land wedrive on. The person who put together the day’s event was incharge, and the hope was that that would be enough. The hopewas a bit naive, but heartfelt. As it seems with all things, protec-tion for those members doing the work of the society, rules forbehavior, and all of the other trappings of a formal organizationwere eventually needed, but they surrounded the original intentwithout smothering it. Today we have bylaws, a code of ethics anda great Board of Directors to lead the society. Hopefully, we’ve notlost our original vision.

As with many humble beginnings, the first trail ride con-sisted of myself, Sean Cantrell and his family. We met outside ofthe Hyphen Coffee Shop, Main Street, in Fuquay-Varina, NC. Thattrail ride, on the fourth Saturday of the month, became a tradition.We spent a great day exploring a series of trails outside of FortBragg (sadly, they’ve since been closed.). It was a great time! Thenext four trail rides weren’t so spectacular, as I found myself theonly person there. I was just about to the point of calling it afailed experiment when on one Saturday I found five Land Roversin the parking lot. From that point on, attendance on those trailrides would fluctuate from two Land Rovers to the largest one of21 Land Rovers.

The early simple efforts taken to go just to Uwharrie NationalForest have expanded to include events held at the coast, acrossthe piedmont, and into the mountainous regions of NorthCarolina. Events for every type of skill level now grace the adven-ture calendar, giving opportunity for adventure to everyone.When Rovers North asked me to write an article, I thought, whynot contact the membership and let them tell everyone what theythink about being a member of the Old North State? Here is whatthey have to say.

Dale Knepp wrote “the camaraderie and friendshipsintertwined with high morals and integrity is what the Society isall about. We have a family atmosphere where we use our Roversas a venue to enjoy the outdoors with like-minded enthusiasts.Whether on organized trips/events or side trips, some life longfriendships have been developed. Another tribute is the encour-

agement of seasoned wheelers towards newbies. All are welcomeand encouraged to participate, without undue pressure or compe-tition (well maybe just a little amongst friends).

Charles Allen responded that “what I like (love) about the OldNorth State is the feeling I get of “belonging.” When we have anevent or trail ride together everyone is welcome and made to feelthat way, including wives, children and pets. The trail leaders arealways looking out for everyone involved. If someone feelsuncomfortable with part of a trail we all look for an alternativeroute. There is no pressure to do something you don’t want to do.We have a verymature (not old)group of drivers.Everyone is will-ing to help andoffer advice atany time, fromdriving tips tomechanical help.I read on one off-road site that,“No one is out ofgas, food, water,parts, etc. until allof us are out.” Ifeel that thissums the OldNorth State LandRover Societyperfectly.”Matt Wallaceasked “when was the last time youtook your Land Rover off road or tookthe family on a camping adventure?The Old North State provides a primeopportunity to break out of the mun-dane routine of going to work, mow-ing the yard, etc. and spend time withyour family in the great outdoors. Aperfect time to leave the cell phonebehind, not that you would have cov-erage in a lot of the places the OldNorth State can take you anyway.”“North Carolina has many great fea-tures, from the coast to the moun-tains. The Old North State’s adven-tures take advantage of these unique

opportunities and areorganized aroundusing your LandRover to take youthere in a safe and funmanner. Where elsecan you gain experi-ence by both drivingin sugar sand at sealevel to enjoy spectac-ular sunsets and thencarefully rover overrocks to experiencethe most breathtakinglong range views atelevations exceeding5,500 feet? Keep inmind though, sandand mud can findtheir way into tents!

The adventures are well planned; yetloose enough to have individual fun,with a focus on completing theadventures with your Land Rover inone piece. This format is very reassur-ing and rewarding if your Land Roveris the daily driver.”

“No matter what model ofLand Rover you drive, the Old NorthState offers opportunities to learnabout other models and other own-ers’ experiences. Society adventuresoften are pretty equally dividedbetween Range Rover models,Discovery models, and Series models,

with a Defender thrown in at times. This offers a great chance tocrawl underneath vehicles, ask knowledgeable owners questions,and evaluate accessory equipment. As a bonus, many of the OldNorth State members have multiple models, providing valuablecomparison information. Society members are true Land Roverand life enthusiasts and are readily willing to help you share in theadventure.”

Ryan McKean noted that “being a member of the OldNorth State Land Rover Society has benefited me in ways that I didnot think possible. I first assumed it was just another four-wheeldrive club similar to those when I owned a Jeep. This could notbe further from the truth. I have grown and learned so muchthrough the Old North State. It has allowed me to interact with avery diverse group of people.The background and personal histo-ry of the members is very fascinating and I enjoying learningabout my comrades just as they do me. We combine these back-grounds into efforts that make this society one of the best I haveever experienced.”

“We participate as a group to complete off-road trailrepair, group camping at rallies, Christmas Parties, pub meets, techsessions, organized trail rides throughout our state and even ourcountry. There are planned annual trips to the mountains and thebeach (my personal favorite).“

“In the Old North State safety is a very big concern andmost of our senior members are always around to help ensure safetechniques. Whether it is driving, winching, or wrench turningyou are always surrounded by competent comrades who enjoybuilding confidence in you. I have found a very special bondwithin the Old North State and through the years, as a member, Ihave seen just how strong our bond is.”

I wrote parts of this article nearly four years ago andthey still apply. Being a part of the OldNorth State has been at the core of someof my fondest memories. No one wouldbelieve it if I said that there were notsome problems along the way, but theywere minimal. Much more plentiful arethe memories of campfires, driving, learn-ing about these fine machines, learningabout each other, and ourselves, and sim-ply enjoying life. I have enjoyed my adven-tures with the society so much!

ROVACOMLITE is a revolutionary diagnostic tool that not only providesyou the same capabilities found in other Land Rover diagnostics sys-tems priced at over $10,000, but is flexible in that you purchase onlythe software modules you need (or can afford). Once you purchase theinitial hardware, you can purchase any of the modules in the list asshown, and within 24 hours you will be forwarded the code to activatethe module(s). These modules typically range in price from $130 - $280.

More than just a scanner, the ROVACOMLITE gives you the ability tonot only read and reset fault codes, but to cycle hardware devices out-puts (lights, door locks, windows, etc.), read system settings, andchange/calibrate where appropriate.

To find out virtually anything about the vehicle or command any vehi-cle system to perform a task, you simply run the vehicle explorer soft-ware on your PC, and click on the relevant standard style text links.Just click and you can “Read current settings”, “Read fault code mem-ory contents”, “Clear fault code memory contents”, “Wind the windowup”, or any one of many hundreds of possibilities. The vehicle explorersoftware sends the request to the vehicle server, which in turninstructs the vehicle system to perform the task required and obtainany returning information to be viewed by the vehicle explorer.

ROVACOMLITE includes an extensive built-in help system that includesindexes, pictures, tables and diagrams to clearly explain every featureand function of each vehicle system. Embedded links are also providedto sites on the Internet. These links, when clicked, will provide youaccess to a vast amount of further information, including not onlyplaces of interest and relevance to each vehicle system but also toservices such as discussion groups and companies who repair, loan,test and supply new and used vehicle system components.

Finally, as a ROVACOMLITE owner, you will have access to the ROVA-COMLITE online forum where specific questions relating to your unitwill be answered by the ROVACOM staff. It can be forced to drive a selection of outputs and also features anadaptive learning capability which can be retriggered to force it torelearn following engine work or operating environment changes.This is particularly useful as it can potentially make the engine runbetter and improve overall economy. There are also a large selec-tion of settings, numbers and other specifications (e.g. VIN/CC).Many of these can be changed allowing ECU swapping. It is alsopossible to put the GEMS ECU into "learn mode" thus synchronizingthe immobilize security loop. The GEMS software module has beenfully developed and tested and is available for inclusion on theROVACOMLITE system.

the contemporary Land Rover product line, which features fourtypes of vehicles – the more utilitarian Defender, the suburbanDiscovery, the luxurious Range Rover, and the versatile Freelander– runs at about 200,000 vehicles per year. The Land Rover grewout of the post-war realities of a devastated Great Britain. A deplet-ed economy pointed to only one direction – export – for recovery.All basic goods in England, from foodstuffs to steel, remainedunder strict rationing. If you had designs on manufacturing prod-ucts in Great Britain, you needed to focus on exports or youwould not receive allotments of raw materials.The Rover CarCompany enjoyed a sterling reputation for refined products forupper income professionals before WWII, but virtually all of itsautomobile sales were domestic. An “Export Department” did noteven exist. If Rover wanted to start up production of home marketsedans again, it would first have to design an export oriented vehi-cle so it could qualify for additional raw materials.

The impetus for the Land Rover, as enshrined in legend,came in 1947 when Spencer Wilks asked his brother Maurice,Rover’s Chief Engineer, what he would buy when the Jeep, awartime relic, on his estate in Anglesey eventually wore out.Maurice responded the only possible answer was another Jeep.To a prideful Englishman like Spencer, the only possible resolutionwas that Rover should build a lightweight, four wheel drive vehi-cle, keyed to agricultural use. The Rover Company jumped intothe breech immediately, but it had such few resources that thevehicle had to be constructed inexpensively and rapidly.Two Jeepswere sourced from an Army dump to begin the design process.Since Rover had no existing frame that could adapted for this use,one was welded up from strips of flat metal into box-sections.Theprototypes used a center steering wheel to avoid right-hand andleft-hand drive market problems [although no examples have everbeen found – ed].With limited funds to purchase body panelmachinery, the design required panels that could be shaped byhand.The severe rationing of steel meant the body would be con-structed from Birmabright aluminum alloy, expensive but easier towork by hand.

The Wilks brothers and their small staff worked furious-ly to complete the first prototypes in time for testing and intro-duction at the 1948 Amsterdam Auto Show. A test report inEngland’s The Autocar of April, 1948, attempted to describe theLand Rover as “either a private car able to perform many valuableduties other than sheer transport, or as a general purpose country-side worker which is also capable of providing comfortable andefficient transport. Its appearance is starkly practical, nevertheless,it is not ugly and has a distinctly attractive appearance all its own,the operative word about the whole car is ‘substantial’.” If theworld has to be strictly economical for years to come, is not thisthe sort of car that most of us need, one that is entirely practicaland essentially useable?

And practical it was.The production Land Rover cameas a three-seat, open top vehicle with power take-offs front andrear. Through them you could operate machinery from saws tothreshing machines. A capstan winch option added to its versatili-ty. A Mobile Welder, Compressor and Fire Engine models werecreated, starting the tradition of custom Land Rovers that remainsto the present day. A short-lived Station Wagon ran from 1948-1951 and revived again in 1954 to become a staple of the line.While Land Rovers came in two basic wheelbase lengths, theyshared common engines and most drivetrain components.Different top configurations, whether hardtops, station wagon“safari tops” (with sun shields and air vents), removable canvas orpickup cab, could be placed on any body shell, giving ownersmaximum flexibility while reducing production costs. To theimmense surprise of management, the demand for Land Rovers farexceeded supply. The company made a few changes increasinglength and engine size, and then came out with a new model, theSeries II in 1958. A few cosmetic and drivetrain changes markedthe Series II-A models (1962-1971), with most changes coming asa result of new regulations in export markets. The Series III(1971-1984) upgraded the interior for the first time in over adecade, provided a safety dashboard,“deluxe” seating, a new trans-mission with synchromesh in all four gears, an easier clutch, andeven a radio as an option. The inherent flexibility of the basicdesign also meant that a Special Projects unit of the companycould produce custom versions, such as ambulances and crewcabs, for one-off needs of fleet buyers. Special versions of eachSeries would be constructed for military use, although a majorLand Rover military presence did not arrive until 1956. TheMilitary Lightweights, with their distinctive appearances, havebecome favorites of off-roaders and collectors worldwide.

Whichever version you chose, the Land Rover provedremarkably rugged, well engineered and easy to repair with simpletools.The steel box-section frame could be patched by any compe-tent welder. All critical suspension and axle pieces lay bathed in90W oil. Whether gas or diesel, the 2.25 liter engine’s 8-quart oilcapacity assured adequate lubrication in torturous conditions.Themammoth radiator kept temperatures down even in the deserts.The aluminum body panels didn’t rust, and since they were boltedto each other, proved strikingly easy to replace in the event of anaccident, Drovers worldwide discovered they could abuse themwithout mercy and their Land Rovers would get them home.Ironically, despite selling every vehicle it could make, Land Roverfound itself increasingly short of resources to compete in globalmarkets. Japanese manufacturers had marketed their four-wheeldrive counterparts, like the Toyota Land Cruiser, at substantiallylowers purchase prices. Land Rover suffered from a lack of capitalfunds to develop new products, enhance current offerings, andstrengthen dealer networks. With so few cars produced each year,there simply was not enough profit per car to provide capitalreserves.

There was, however, one major obstacle in the road toLand Rover’s worldwide success. The United States market bought

relatively few Land Rovers in any one year. From 1948-1974, whenLand Rover pulled out of the United States market (they returnedwith the Range Rover in 1987), only about 13,000 Land Roversfound their way across the Atlantic. Most Americans used them forsport or people-hauling purposes, rather than as the utility-agricul-tural uses for which they were designed. That made the stationwagon versions in the 88” wheelbase version the most popular,although a four-door, 109” version, was also available. In general,U.S. drivers found the Land Rover to be rather expensive as well astoo boxy, too dull, too primitive, too slow, and gas-miserly when itdidn’t matter. For two years in the mid-’60’s, Land Rover tried toaddress these concerns by dropping a 6-cylinder into the 109”Station Wagon, but the engine proved troublesome and unremark-able in an age of huge V-8’s. Although Land Rover made a pick-uptruck version, the U.S. slapped a 25% tariff on every importedtruck, so it sold poorly. Increasingly, Land Rover faced greater chal-lenges in the U.S. market. The weaker dollar artificially strength-ened the pound sending prices higher and higher. British politicsplayed a role, too, as Land Rover found itself a crown jewel in theBritish Leyland conglomerate created to save the British autoindustry. These circumstances further assured that corporate prof-its, badly needed to update existing models, would be siphoned offto help salvage dying Austin and Morris models. By 1974 LandRover, looking ahead to more stringent American emissions con-trols and safety legislation, packed it in and sent Land Rovers tothe rest of a more appreciative world.

However, Land Rover never lost sight of what the U.S.market was doing with four-wheel drive vehicles.The success ofthe ‘60’s Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco provided LandRover engineers the support they needed to convince manage-ment that a luxury four wheel drive vehicle, could become a com-mercial success. Oddly, General Motors gave Land Rover an unin-tentional boost when it sold the rights to its 215 cubic inch alu-minum V-8 in 1963. That powerplant could produce nearly 200 hpwhen the standard Land Rover 4-cylinder offered 77 hp, all in apackage of similar size and weight. It quickly became the engineof choice for the luxurious Range Rover when it was introducedin 1970, and later on the Land Rover 110” in 1979. Range Roverswere an instant sales success in England and other markets, offer-ing comfort and roadworthiness while retaining traditional LandRover off road capabilities. Range Rovers showed up in NorthAmerica not long after their introduction in England (in 1970) as

grey market imports with formal importation to North Americabeginning in 1987. While always a comfortable quiet vehicle, theRange Rover has moved aggressively up-market since its introduc-tion. Engine and drivetrain enhancements have made it evensmoother and more powerful, particularly with the introduction ofthe newer 4.0 and 4.6 models. Whatever version, the Range Roverhas proven a durable, reliable vehicle in the Land Rover tradition.High mileage engines, exceeding 250,000 on the odometer, are notuncommon. Used North American-spec Range Rovers havebecome popular “entry-level” Land Rovers for new enthusiasts.

Land Rover strengthened its presence in North Americain the early 1990s with the importation of the Land RoverDefender 90, the logical successor of the Series I-III models, and abrief run of a version of the formidable Defender 110, a four-doormodel complete with roof rack and “safari cage.” Any honest LandRover enthusiast would admit: they would sell their soul to ownone. Imports of the Defender model to the United States ceasedafter 1997 due, in large part, to the inability to meet future U.S.safety standards, particularly those related to the cockpit.

The growth in popularity of the SUV helped theDiscovery, created in 1989 and introduced in the USA in 1994, finda niche with suburban drivers, who have families, groceries andpets to transport from here to there.These Land Rover ownershead to the mountains to ski, or to the beach to relax, and mightoff-road for pleasure but seldom as a part of everyday life or job.True to its heritage, Land Rover still incorporates aluminum bodypanels and exemplary four wheel drive technology into its currentline – which sells in quantities in the U.S. alone that would haverivaled the world-wide Series sales!

Since the release of the Discovery, Land Rover has putout another strong sport utility aimed at the growth of the baby-ute SUV. The Land Rover Freelander, a smaller Land Rover, hascome into the market as a safe yet trendy car that can carry the

kids and family anywhere and can park anywhere, while maintain-ing the thoughts of driving anywhere, even off-road. TheFreelander’s appearance is similar to other smaller sized SUVs onthe market, however, it is a Land Rover through and through. Itadds to the marque’s arsenal a less expensive alternative, thusallowing the Range Rover to take a step up into the upper class ofluxury vehicles.

Recently redesigned, the new Range Rover truly inhabitsthe high end of luxury while continuing the capable heritage ofits predecessors. A far cry from the utilitarian nature of the firstSeries trucks, this vehicle features such comforts as 12-wayadjustable leather seats and a heated steering wheel. A BMW-designed engine, independent front suspension and a unitary bodyalso break with tradition. The off road and 4 wheel drive capabili-ties are no less formidable though, being the end result of 50+years of engineering expertise.

A brand new Land Rover, featured at the All British CarMeet and in the previous issue of the Rovers North News, is thestartling new LR3. This Land rover boasts some of the most cut-ting-edge on-road technology of any Land Rover, such as headlightsthat adjust to “see around corners” [remember the Citroen DS-19?– ed], as well as off-roading essentials, like locking differentials andsatellite navigation. It also fulfils one of the Land Rover’s premieruses, if not the original intention: it is a people mover. It can easilyseat seven adults, in three rows of seating.The LR3 comes with aTerrain Response System that allows the driver to select the kindof terrain the LR3 is about to encounter and LR3 responds imme-diately by adjusting electronic systems such as Traction Control,ABS, Hill Descent Control and High and Low Range to adapt to thesituation.These features are complimented by the 300 hp V8under a bonnet, reminiscent of the Range Rover, with an equallystriking body style to match.The impressive LR3 is the ultimatecombination of all that Land Rover has come to represent in avehicle, and the technology of today. Land Rover enthusiasts, aswell as down-to-earth consumers, should both see this vehicle as arevolution in engineering and practicality.

Bruce McWilliams, who headed Land Rover’sNorth American operations in the 1960’s once commented in aninterview (Land Rover Owner International, February, 1995): Thepeople who ran Land Rover were gentlemen. What you had [inthem] was in ways the residue and remainder of an age whenEnglish gentlemen created and purchased significant automobiles– They were honorable and decent, and quite brilliant engineers,and the fruits of their labour show it.

Our definitions of what we expect in a vehicle havechanged, but in a world of marketing hype, form over substanceand bean-counter mentality manufacturing, Land Rover continuesto produce “The World’s Most Versatile Car.”

Installing a Genuine Dash Repair Kit in your Discovery I

Most Discovery Series I’s are prone to having the frontmost section of the dashboard - closest to the wind-screen - peel up around the defroster vents. This makesan otherwise handsome interior look bad – fast. This“peeling” is due to long term exposure of UV rays, heatand quite simply, an adhesive material used in manufac-turing that wears out.

Let’s get on with the good stuff. You cannow fix your peeled up dashboard with one of ourDash Repair Kits (RNH253) for the Discovery I. It con-sists of two formed dashboard plastic cover/anchorsand all neccessary hardware.

Tools required for this job;- Utility knife- #2 phillips screw driver- Right angled drill with phillips bit or 1/4” ratchet

handle with #2 phillips bit- Pencil- Dremel Moto Tool or similar (or utility knife)- Flat or round file- A little bit of patience and...- A good Land Rover project helper friend

Typically this is what your Discovery I dashboard will look like. Theonly solution (other than a new dashboard) is to fit this Genuine Kit.

Carefully drill in some of the supplied self tapping screws to secure down any high portionof the dash. Make sure to locate these in an area other than the pre-drilled locations on thedash cover kit. Use your friend to help.

After you have finished installing the remaining screws, test fit the binnicle and usingthe pencil, mark the corners (and or areas where it contacts the cover) where trimmingwill be required.

Connect the wiring harness back in, and refit the binnacle to the dashboard. Completed Genuine Discovery I Dashboard Kit fitted.

Time for the Moto Tool. Carefully sculpt the areas away on the binnacle that come intocontact with the dash cover kit. Finish up the edges with a flat or round file.

Start with the passenger side of the dash and using the sup-plied self tapping screws, insert into the pre-drilled holes anddrill with the 90˚ angle tool into the dash to fasten the cover.

Attack the second and third screws in the same fashion. Be carefull toNOT crack the glass of the windscreen. Fit the remaining screws and takeyour time lining it up BEFORE securing it. Use your friend!

Start by removing the binnicle. There are several phillips headscrews that attach it to the dashboard. Unplug all the wiringharnesses and note their location.

Take that utility knife out and carefully carve away any “super high” section. Be extra cautious to notcut away too much and or yourself. Test fit the dash edge cover piece before and while you are doingthis so that you know how much (or little) to remove. This will help in the mounting of the dash edgecover later.

I found an old New Yorker magazine from summer2003 in the house. The cover artwork captured theessence of driving for every Land Rover enthusiast.Before you is the sweep of a windshield constrain-ing your view. The shape is closer to a 50’s Roversedan than a Series Land Rover, but even if it hadbeen the more expansive view of the Range Rover,Discovery or Freelander, you would recognize thatyour visual universe is shaped by the dimensions ofyour windshield. Alongside a country road lies arow of deciduous trees in full summer green.There’s a slight blur where the glass distorts theview near the bottom of the windshield.

A man’s hand - you know this by the heftand bit of suit jacket sleeve with white shirt cuffshowing - grips a large wheel with the right fingerindentations for grip. The wheel has a large spokeand portion of a central hub visible.They’re blackbakelite in appearance; there’s no hint of leathercovering for grip or status. From the tensed musclesin the man’s hand, it’s clear that power steering wasnot ordered on this car. A large, long gearshift leversits off to his right, easily within reach. Only theslightest lip of safety padding, matching the paint inthe interior, protects the occupant. Two instrumentneedles hint at unspecified conditions, but one nee-dle is at the 3/8 position, so all must be well.

I’ve stared at this drawing by P. KentonNelson for a while thinking of my 1,000 miles ofrecent driving. A new posting takes me every weekto the Maine - New Brunswick, Canada town ofCalais. The trip there begins with a 90 minute ferryride from my island town home, another 90 minutesof two-lane, somewhat trafficked roads, and thennearly 100 miles of the road called The Airline. MaineState Route 9 starts in China, Maine, along ChinaLake and then runs northeast towards Bangor. It’s aterrific, two lane road that passes farms, a few busi-nesses, some schools, and reflections of daily life asit winds its way up and around the hills of centralMaine.

Then, at Bangor, it becomes a wider, moretwisted road through far more remote towns. Muchof the land it crosses is unincorporated “townships”of bog, paper company land and stunning lakes. Theroad heads east-west from Bangor to Calais andCanada. There are four places along the route to getfuel or food, and they’re not open very late. I’ve seenonly one repair shop along the entire route. One guykeeps busy by operating the only tow truck on theroad.The Airline is a popular if dangerous truck traf-fic route because it saves nearly 50 miles of drivingfrom a competing coastal route. Maine’s countryand western notable, Dick Curless, had a hit with thelines “there’s a stretch of road, up north in Maine,that never, ever, ever wears a smile.”Over the years,it’s been slowly evened out and widened with theaddition of truck passing lanes. Still, winter weather,fatigue and driving difficulties still make it a difficultroad. Last year, a flatbed logging truck shifted its logson a turn; when they fell off the truck, they landedon a car in the opposite lane, killing the occupants.

Any dangers, toils and fears fall by thewayside when the sun rises or sets over the steephills and lakes. The reflection of the awakening dayor the fading light as you drive remind you whyenthusiasts drive. As the Cunard Line used to saybefore the QM,“getting there is half the fun.”

If that’ so, then few people had the funenjoyed by Jacques Jenny, Sheridan,WY, this summer.Over the past two years, Jacques, a recent highschool graduate, rebuilt a Series II with the help ofhis father, Peter. The acorn does not fall far from thetree, as we say in New England. Pete Jenny is anavid Land Rover and general aviation enthusiast; hetreats his Land Rovers as well as his treats his classicplanes. After two years in an airplane hangar, theSeries II was relaunched. His Series II joins a refur-bished 109” in the family stable.

Jacques’ Land Rover had a serviceableframe so only a lot of elbow grease was necessary toready it for daily use. New swivel balls helped with

the road control. The transmission was in poor con-dition, so he purchased a Series II-A transmission.That’s when he discovered that the dreadedPrevious Owner had changed out the bell housingto accommodate the Series III transmission on thecar. Pulling it once more, Jacques also decided topurchase a new, MoD- reconditioned engine throughRovers North. A Weber carburettor completed theengine setup.

Pete Jenny decided to practice his sprayskills by painting the car himself. He used an aircraftaluminum primer and marine paint on the car,which is a bronze green. To keep the car authentic,he left the mild off-roading dents in the body.

What would you do after spending twoyears rebuilding a car? Why, you’d enroll inVermont’s Middlebury College just so you coulddrive your car 2,250 miles over “three very longdays”...without overdrive...following your family intheir modern SUV...from Wyoming to the coast ofMaine.Your brother, Barclay, would join you only forpart of the final day. Your mother, Barbara, and yourfather, would encourage you from the seat of theirfar-more-modern vehicle.

Jacques had the wisdom to carry a well-equipped toolbox, complete with a Rovers Northsticker. Naturally, the car ran flawlessly on the tripalthough the speedometer began to fail by the eastcoast. By the time you read this issue of the news,Jacques and his car will be in Vermont. My 300-mileweekly trips faded into meaninglessness after meet-ing Jacques. 2,250 miles across much of the country- in a Series II - on highways. Now that’s driving!

So’s this, thanks to Rover EnthusiastRobert Slater, Oshkosh,WI. He sent us an August,1961 issue of Popular Mechanics. It’s complete with

cigarette ads, articles on “how to add sound to your8-mm movies [Zowie!!], and how to make trellisesfrom coat hangars.”More germane to the Land Roverenthusiast is a wonderful story on Richard Bevir’strans-Darien expedition that began in October, 1959.Unlike the Geof Miller Darien Gap Expedition in theearliest Range Rovers, this one used a Series II 88”Hardtop. It was equipped with an 8,000 lb. PTOdriven winch, some jerry cans and a roll bar mount-ed inside the cabin. The 12.5 gallon fuel tank and 15gallons in the cans, which provided a range of 450miles on the open road, were good for about 60miles in the jungle. The Rover earned the name LaCucaracha Carinosa - The Lovable Cockroach.

On October 16, Bevir and TerryWhitefield left Toronto, proceeded down highways

through the United States and picked up the PanAmerican Highway. This road gained acclaim as itpurported to be the only “all weather” road. InCosta Rica, the highway petered out to a set ofmountain tracks and trails for over 100 miles, a sortof mini-Darien. Highway engineers had workedunsuccessfully for 18 years to construct a road. Thecrew faced countless trails and 23 landslides.Building one raft and walking the cargo of 4,800pounds across the alligator infested river took upthree days.Thirteen days later, they resumed theirroad eastward past the Panama Canal until the townof Chepo. Then they faced a 310 mile trek throughrain forest, bog, and lowland field until Quibada,Columbia.

The trip was exhausting and exhilaratingat the same time. Some days they were lucky toprogress 2 miles. During their trek, a team of anthro-pologists and geologists joined them in a Jeep CJpickup, which failed often. The Land Rover, muchbattered, even survived a winch cable failure, aresulting tumble down a 65 foot hill and a rollover.As Bevir wrote,“even more amazing, when [Terry]stepped on the starter, the vehicle’s engine roaredup as well as ever. Terry wryly remarked,‘You know,Dick, that was the fastest 70 feet we made duringthe entire trip.” The trip took 134 days; it included310 miles of road, 125 hand-built log bridges, andthe fording of 180 rivers and creeks. The LandRover had smashed windows, a stripped differentialand many body dents, but it drove proudly intoBogota, Columbia.

A decade ago, Land Rover enthusiasts used to flockto Maine for an event called the Downeast LandRover Rally. Convoying back from a fun weekend, Ijoined a line up of Land Rover on the side of Rte. 1.Walking up to a stricken Rover, I noted the hood upand smoke rising from the engine compartment.The upset owner bemoaned his fate to the assem-blage,“I can’t understand how this happened. Irewired it myself.”As a Series Land Rover, repairsnecessary to get home by running power to thestarter and ignition only were not that difficult. OneHaynes manual and a lot of head scratching later -with a few sparks - the Rover was on its way home.

Now I’m a guy who used to blow thefuses in my family’s house by wiring up my Lionelelectric trains myself. I adhere to a theory of auto-motive electronics that believes that electricity isactually smoke that travel through hollow wire.When the wire cracks or breaks, smoke escapes andthe component or the whole car stops running.

Lanny Clark, the estimable Land Roverrestorer who worked for many years at RoversNorth, once consoled me that “the only Land Roveryou can’t rebuild is one that’s stolen or burned up.”I thought of an incident a few years back when thevoltage regulator on my ‘66 Series II-A erupted inflame upon startup at a gas station one evening. Itwas, to say the least, unnerving. A gentlemen in aFord Crown Vic offered me his coat, made from apetroleum-based product, which threatened to igniteitself, but I beat it vigorously enough that it put outthe fire.

The problem, of course, was not the volt-age regulator itself but the wiring running to andfrom it. After 30 + years, the faded color insulationand brittle metal composition signaled the end ofthat wiring harness. While at it, I decided to acceptthe admonition to change from a positive ground,generator-voltage regulator system to a negativeground system with an alternator. After all, have youtried to find a positive ground radio these days? Theone I purchased in 1968 for my Morris Minor waslong gone, and unless you knew someone with anold junker Ford, you weren’t going to find anAmerican one. And no, I do not have the capacity tounderstand the requirements for insulating a posi-tive ground radio in a negative ground system.

I thought of the incident again when adead short in the alternator of my ‘80 TR-7 conspiredwith a frayed hot power wire from the starter to thealternator to burn out the engine wiring harnessone morning. The plumes of smoke from the hood,during a torrential downpour, I might add, were veryimpressive. The incident prompted a frightenedneighbor remarked nervously, “just how long haveyou owned this car?” Since I had hidden the1/2”spanner in the tool bag, the electrical short hadplenty of time to melt and fray wiring as I searchedfor the correct wrench [memo to self - either install

a battery switch or a quick release connector to thebattery cable. As a Leyland product, the TR-7 resem-bled the wiring of an early Range Rover - simple,similarly color coded, and direct.Within a few hours,Mike Smith at East Coast Rover had constructed anew wiring harness and attached it to the correctleads from the bulkhead.

Hint from behind the steering wheel; ifyou want to stay behind the steering wheel, thenconsider replacing the wiring harnesses in yourLand Rover. Oftentimes, the wiring behind the dash-board does not receive the heat and corrosive as inthe engine compartment.You may well find that, asin the Series Rovers, you can replace considerableparts of the wiring harness by plugging in new com-ponents. It will take time to complete the project,but where safety is involved, aren’t you worth it?

entity “Range Rover North America.” Secretly, you’re in a quandary.In the home market, the success of the Vogue models

had demonstrated the lure of a luxury-oriented Range Rover -remember, the 1970 models were two-door utility vehicles withshag carpeting around the passender and a rubber mat around thecargo. A combination of limited production, appealing design andengineering and price assured the exclusivity of this model.Withthis, the future for the Range Rover brand was set.With the lower-priced Discovery under development, the intention was to pushthe original (and best) increasingly upmarket, ensuring that theRange Rover would represent the absolute pinnacle of four-wheel-drive vehicles.

In the long term, planners knew that the 1970 original -as smart as it was - would need significant development in orderto keep pace the development of rival cars.Work began on theproject in 1988, with engineering and styling work being focusedupon - but at this point in time, no deadline for launch was set. Itwas not until 1990, and with a budget of 300 million, that the proj-ect to replace the Range Rover was formally started under thecodename of P38A.The launch date of late 1994 was set at thistime.Technically, meeting the demands of the 1990s would be nomean task, but given the excellence of the original, a firm founda-tion was already in place. Also, because the relationship betweenold and new, itwould be entirelypossible to intro-duce featuresbound for the newcar into the existingone. It was a ploythat had workedwell in the past forJaguar and Rolls-Royce, so in thisrespect, the RangeRover was in good company.

Of more of concern, however, was the new car’s styling.Rather like the difficulties encountered by Porsche when it cameto replacing the 911, Land Rover knew that a major part of theRange Rover’s appeal was its styling - and it would absolutely needto be right.Therefore, a great deal of care and attention wouldneed to be employed in the development of the P38A’s look... itwould need to look substantially more modern, yet be readily

identifiable as a Range Rover. George Thomson,Land Rover’s styling director was handed theproject in 1988, and admitted later that he foundthe brief both challenging and intimidating.“Recreating a classic like the Range Rover is agreat challenge - but not an easy one.”

Design competition at Solihull pitted rivalstudies against each other: Ital Design, Bertone,and Land Rover stylists themselves. Only LandRover’s and Bertone’s designs were consideredworthy enough to be translated into full-sizeclay.

Thomson needed to balance stylisticdemands with marketing demands. To be prof-itable, the Range Rover required a lot of handlabor. This raised the price, and luxury buyershave different tastes than estate owners. Thedesign would have to thrill existing customerswhile luring new customers out of luxury carbrands and into the new Range Rover. The rangeof designs was striking in its breadth and creativ-ity.

Design clinics involved customers in thefinal decision. Styling efforts that pulled theRange Rover too far from its distinctive elements

did not fare well; a website on the P38A quoted a French cus-tomers claiming “this car has lost its Wellington boots.” Customerstend to be far more cautious and conservative than the designersof their favorite cars; it takes time for people to adjust to thechanges. In the end, the Land Rover in-house design won out andthe familiar P38-A came into production.

The “P” stands for the code name Pegasus and thedesign incorporated many familiar elements: the low waistline,strong flanks, the “floating” roof, the “castle” ridges on the frontcorners of the hood, the dark surrounds around the windows. Italso came with the all-too-trendy rectangular headlamps of thatera. For all the stylingcues, it still, however, itstill lacked enough ofthe distinctive profileto permit instant iden-tification. Land Roverwas forced to put itsname in bold letteringacross the front of thecar. By the time itcame out inSeptember, 1994, all

too many other cars shared similar shapes.In terms of body and chassis engineering, the P38A (an

amalgamation of “Pegasus” and “38A”) retained much of the origi-nal’s underpinnings.The ingredients were familiar: a ladder-framechassis (stiffened by 18 per cent) with the body compliantlymounted in the interests of NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)reduction. Crashworthiness was also improved, with front and off-set impact resistance improved with further chassis reinforcement

- the fuel tank was also re-located to beneath the rear seat, andside impact bars were added to all the doors... all in the interestsof improved safety.

Two versions of the Rover V8 were introduced, in 4.0and 4.6-litre forms.The 4-liter version developed 190bhp and236lb/ft torque, whilst the 4.6 developed 225bhp and 277lb/fttorque. Dashboard and interior were a huge leap over and abovethe original car’s.The dashboard design, in particular, was pleasing- with it’s swoopy centre console and car-like instrument binnacle.

As befitting an entirely new car, the interior was com-pletely overhauled as well - finally putting to rest the 1970 vintagedashboard architecture. The aim of the P38A programme was toimprove interior quality, and bring it up to Germanic standards, asbefitting the car’s upmarket role. The heating controls were sim-plified, and the adjustable ride-height controls were now totallyintuitive. Certainly, these goals were largely met, althoughdesigned-in quality still had a little way to go - put that down tothe non-too-generous development budget.

The British magazine Autocar magazine faintly compli-mented then-new Range Rover. Comparing it with three rivals,they concluded:“It is the Range Rover that is unquestionably thecar of the group, and so it should be considering its price. Buteven taking cost into consideration, its blend of effortless on-roadperformance and unimpeachable off-road authority means it can-not lose here. Although not a generation ahead of its time like itspredecessor, but merely a thorough evolution of a familiar theme,there is no other in its class to touch it.”

To Land Rover fans, BMW’s Wolfgang Reitzle will foreverremain a controversial figure. but one thing he did understand wasthe value of the Range Rover - being as it was, the best in theworld at what he did. And rather like Autocar, he came to the con-clusion that because of the way it was designed, it was notadvanced enough to live a long life. One of his first decisions thataffected Land Rover, was to abandon the Discovery replacement infavor of building a new Range Rover - which would owe nothingto the P38A. A quick glance at the exterior or interior of the cur-

rent Range Rover demonstrates this reality.If you have the nerve, the P38A is simply majestic off

road. In its primary use on the road, it has all the features youloved in a Range Rover Classic but adds more room, greater luxuryand better handling. Its plethora of electronic luxury features didnot come without headaches; some owners complained that afterthe initial purchase price, they really shouldn’t have to deal withrepairing electrical systems controlling vital functions. By now, a 9-10 year old Range Rover P38A might start as low as $7,000 -$9,000. If it’s been maintained, then the annoying systems glitcheshave been worked out. Parts for this model are readily availablethrough Rovers North. For used Chevy or Kia dollars, you can havea Land Rover you can use daily, on or off road, in any weather con-dition.We know it’s a “tweener” model in the evolution of theRange Rover, but with the current “gills” model appealing to manycustomers, more and more P38A’s are on dealer lots as trade-ins.This may be an excellent time to enter the Range Rover world.

In Caracas, Venezuela, Miguel Veragara drove hisunidentified Land Rover to a gas station, filled up the20 gallon tank, and gave the attendant $2.00. Hereceived change. The Boston Globe reported that hefelt “it seems to me that gasoline is expensive. Thisnation is a petroleum producer.” Venezuela, whichproduces about 15% of the crude oil used in theUnited States, sets a rate of about 9 cents a gallon forgasoline. In Los Angeles, where gasoline exceeds$3.00 per gallon, one wag listed prices for his threegrades of gas as “arm, leg, arm and leg.”

For years I’ve shed crocodile tears eachtime I’ve fueled up the ‘66 Series II-A. By the time thefuel gauge has dropped to E, I can usually squeeze10-11 gallons into the tank. Until this Spring, that’smeant that as long as I had a $20 bill, I could still getchange back - although not as much as SenorVeragara in Caracas.. Of course, that meant stoppingfor fuel every 200 miles or so, but then, who couldgo more than 200 miles in a II-A without taking abreak anyway?

Friends with Discoverys or Range Roverscould, and did, enjoy longer absences from gas sta-tions, but then, each time they arrived, they requireda major transference of funds more akin to JamesBond at Monte Carlo than me at a Cumberland Farmsor 7-11. Hauling around some considerable heft,those V-8’s also needed premium fuel, too.

This spring, though, everything changed.

The solo $20 bill no longer would fill the coffers; mylast fill up required - gasp! - $23.00. I was inapoplectic shock. We keep being told that, adjustedfor inflation, gas prices now are still less than thoseof 1981, but then, many Land Rover enthusiastsweren’t even born in 1981. Of course, by Europeanstandards, our fuel prices seem like bargains. TheBritish have reconciled themselves to petrol pricesthat average around $6.00 per U.S. gallon, 2-3 timeswhat we’ve paid this spring in the US. The Frenchand Germans “save” around $1.00 over the Brits.Since Americans are already whining at prices from$2.00-$3.00 per gallon, imagine the hue and cry ifour prices reached European levels?

Throughout most of its history LandRover had built only genuine four wheel drive vehi-cles. Except for a handful of military vehicles, allLand Rovers featured the frame, drivetrains, andengines necessary for long-lived utility vehicles. Rightup through the early 1980’s, you could still hose outthe rear compartment of a Range Rover. When itbecame clear to designers that the Range Rovers andDefenders were really people, rather than cargo, car-riers, the interiors changed and became more com-fortable, but the vehicle still demanded the sameexterior, drivetrain and chassis features. Theseimperatives would challenge engineers to producecars that had the requisite heft while still producingreasonable gas mileage. Even the recently-designedNAS spec Freelander, solely produced to carry peopleand their gear, has the same requirements and disap-

points car testers with so-so gas mileage. Off road, of course, all fuel economy

measurements go by the board. The slow travel, wait-ing time, and stretches of constant idling or “put thewellie to it” acceleration. An off road event of severalhours can burn through a tidy portion of the fuel inyour gas tank - unless, of course, you’ve convertedyour Land Rover to a Tdi. Diesel owners can idle forhours with negligible fuel use. Still, unless you’reusing your Land Rover in farming, logging or expedi-tion work, most of your time is spent on actualroads.

In Great Britain and Europe, where nearlyhalf the cars sold are diesels. the 1.8 Rover dieselsor the Land Rover Tdi’s proved to be the answer. U.S.emissions standards, driven by the California stan-dards, preclude Land Rover from making the Tdioptional. How good is that option? Here’s a contem-porary example. A Mercedes E320 CDI, with its 201hp diesel engine, traveled about 600 miles on 18 gal-lons of diesel fuel. At $1.70 per gallon, that’s about34 mpg and $31.00 of fuel. If the same car had a gasengine, it would have needed about 24 gallons and$52.00 of fuel. Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, NewYork and California all adhere to the more stringentCalifornia diesel standards; in terms of car sales,California is the 800-pound gorilla in this mix.

Most of us can’t instantly increase ourincomes to make up for the spike in fuel prices, sohow do we justify the added expenses? If you’re read-ing this newspaper, you’re an enthusiast and youshould remind yourself that’s exactly why you’ve cho-sen to spend time behind the wheel of a Land Rover.

There’s a Range Rover P38-A running around thecoast of Maine, complete with a “RNGE RVR” vanityplate. I see it routinely when I leave my island town.Once, I met the owner and told him I owned a SeriesII-A. The young man was oblivious about what thismeant, but oh, was he thrilled with his Range Rover.He should be, too, as his white Rover was shiny,clean and straight. We had met at an Auto Zonewhere he had wiped out the store of car cleaningproducts, and most of it had been lathered onto thecar. Did he love his car? Absolutely? Had he becomean enthusiast? Absolutely. Was he going to find a wayto shift around expenses to afford his Range Rover’srunning costs? Absolutely.

Whether you use your Land Rover fordaily or occasional driving, remind yourself thatyou’re riding in a vehicle designed by engineers witha unique mandate to produce the finest four wheeldrive vehicle in the world. The ergonomics of theinterior, the styling of the exterior, the melding of dri-vetrain and frame, the extraordinary range of the sus-pension, the brilliant design of the monocoque con-struction on the Range Rover, the balance of the car,the superb driving capabilities across all terrain,these are the reasons you purchased your LandRover and have kept it. Then when you go to fill upthe fuel tank, knowing you’ve given up something topay the extra cost, you’ll be pleased with your deci-sion to reward yourself with your Land Rover. Whoknows - maybe one day Land Rover will be able toimport its diesel to the U.S. That will increase theexcitement for enthusiasts.

After a June and July of fog and stereotypical Britishweather, August has brought a genuine summer. Drierweather has meant that Land Rovers could return to thewoods and fields without a guilty conscience. Those logspiled up in mud can now be cut, split, dumped into theLand Rover and taken the woodpile at home. Fortunately,after reviewing all the entries, the editor could send all ofthem to Jac’Kiye McCollett, Monmouth, ME, who has aball compiling and reflecting upon your entries. Onceagain she discovered dozens of Sightings that warrantemptying more of the crockery cupboards at RoversNorth. As always, it’s helpful for rookies to review therules for Sightings - it can be just as useful for the griz-zled Sighting veterans as well.

Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition and ourappreciation, but not necessarily a mug. We rewardonly those Sightings that capture the unique qualitiesof Land Rovers and their owners, and display them inan distinctive way.

Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really surpriseyou, it won’t surprise us, either, and thus we can’taward you a mug. We’re delighted, but not surprised,that Land Rovers appear in British television pro-grammes, British publications, films with Britishthemes, and shows about African safaris. You should-n’t be surprised, either, and should consider lookingfor other ways to get a coffee mug.

Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before publica-tion, we close off the Sightings. If we’ve mentioned theSighting in an earlier issue, we won’t mention itagain. If you’re new to the family of Land Roverenthusiasts, you may not have seen your Sighting inan earlier issue.

Rule #4 - We’re not outfitting your kitchen. If youqualify, one mug per Sighting per issue.

Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover references inbooks go to our Literary Land Rover editor for men-tion, but only when space permits.

Rule #6 - Psst... if we can’t read you name andaddress because of atrocious penmanship, we can’trecognize your Sighting nor send you a mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we can’t send a mugby e-mail. Send us your real name and shippingaddress, too.

Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the Editoradmits he might make an error. Let me know if youthink you’ve been jobbed, but all decisions of theEditor are final.

Land Rovers are everywhere and ubiquitous. We’ve runthis before but it’s worth noting that Leighton Ogg,Houston, TX and Reece Glenn, Winchester, KY, spotted aSeries III in the midst of an adventure packed comic stripcalled “The Phantom”. At a time when classic comicstrips are deleted from newspapers nationwide, no won-der the artists behind The Phantom - set in Africa - keep aLand Rover in the picture.

It may be the biggest Hollywood public rela-tions scam of all time but a Land Rover keeps it real. M.Night Shyamalan made the box office soar with the hitmovie “The Village” *Steven Ratajczyk, Cleveland, TN &Jay Danielson, Mableton, GA, watches as a ranger is

patrolling the perimeter of a wildlife preserve ina nicely outfitted Defender.

Television commercials can beincredibly helpful when it comes to decidingwhat sort of cleaning products we use in oureveryday lives; of course, they can also beincredibly annoying. Matthew Gross,Stewartstown, PA, reminds us that the Slime TireSealer ad with the Series 88” is back on the air.Could it be the only thing good about this prod-uct is having it set in scene where it depicts acouple driving a LR Series 88” SWB ll lookingfor injured tires?

*Debra Scialla,Rindge, NH, spots a woman in acommercial for “The GlassWizard” cleaning the glass on

her Range Rover, Debra sports her own Range Rover, a1988 and tells us she loves it! And finally *Todd Kriner,Endicott City, MD, writes in with an ad for BJ’s Wholesale,where a couple seems to be enjoying the afternoon wash-ing their nice red Discovery.

*Rick Ziler, Vanderhoof, B.C spots a gentle-man in a Leather Buckley Jacket on a Polo websitepropped up against a 109, I suppose Ralph Lauren knowsa couple of good things when he sees them. *DaveHeathcote, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, catches a glimpseof a Land Rover on a billboard for a clothing store ad atWest Edmonton Mall.

Although we’re unaware of the magazine inwhich this next Sighting appeared, it’s apparent that abronze beauty is quite pleased to be the center of atten-tion while leaning on a Defender 90. *Bryan Peroni,Hollidaysburg, PA, states he notices the Defender beforenoticing the “cool watch” she was wearing. Perhaps Mr.Peroni is a jeweler? * Bruce Kinzer, North Windham,CT, recommends Keen brand Footwear because they have“sole”- oh, and also because they are shown with a beau-tiful green Defender 90.

Land Rovers often rescue bad movies, too.*Chris Laimit, Highlands Ranch, CO, spies a green

Series in the movie “Shark Attack” that was “Manni’sTaxi”. It was used in several chase scenesand of course the Series kicked all theother vehicles butts!

*Jennifer Murphy, SanDiego, CA, sends in a few photos of herdaughter holding up the book “My Nest isBest”, The young kindergartener smilingproudly as she shows us a green LandRover. Jennifer also adds how her fatherand daughter went crazy over this book asthey read together. Nice Work! Brian Riley,Minneapolis, MN, sends in an article about

driving a Range Rover though “The Rockies” in MountainSummer’ magazine.

What could be better than taking your driverstest in a Rover? *Geoff Jackson, San Jose, CA, got thegreen light with an ad for Ali Driving School.

MyClipper.com features a group of folks pack-ing a Land Rovers roof rack for what all enthusiasts knowwill be an adventurous expedition. *Troy Schultz,Reading, PA, will be receiving a coveted Rovers Northmug for this sighting.

Busch Gardens offers a safari scene any LandRover lover would enjoy, especially riding aboard theDefender 110 through their zoo. Although a modish vehi-cle, Morgan Pierce, Richmond, VA, will have to settle forrecognition and not a mug (see rule #2)

Kim Siekmann, Pompano Beach, FL, found aLand Rover logo in a catalogue for sign making equip-ment. *Thanks to Greg Coffman, Coshocton, OH forsending in a beautiful metallic gold trimmed Safari Sedanwith elephant hide vinyl, shown on the inside front coverof, we believe, Vitronic Magazine?

Jovan Djordjevic, provided a live Sighting ofa beautiful Defender 110 G4 limited edition with licenseplate from SCG (Serbia and Montenegro) offroading inIOS Greece. James Wolf, Portsmouth, VA, locates whathe is 99% sure is a Defender 90 on the cover of theVirginian Pilot.

Jeff Bridges, Denver, CO, tells us he has beenseeing Land Rovers everywhere! Here he finds one on thePatagonia website where a gentleman is gearing up forthe long haul to Victoria. New South Wales, Australia.Morgan Pierce, Richmond, VA, spies the same 109” onits homepage.

Siegler + Co. magazine has a nice collectionof “Down Under” clothing that would make any out-backer proud. A fellow “Maineiac” *Mike Coleman,Topsfield, ME, tells us they used to be known as “TheSovietski Collection” but they ran out of Cold War itemsand are diversifying. He did manage to see a Series II-A109” in their catalogue, as did *James Dupont, GardenCity, NY, who explains if you want to look like you’re in“the outback” you need a Land Rover. No debate here!

Mike Ripp, Bagley, WI, found a wonderfulstory in Legacy Magazine - National Association forInterpretation about protecting the wildlife of Kenya, andincluded is a famous photo of a cheetah which, of course,takes his seat atop a Rover. I’m not sure how the men inthe vehicle can look so calm, with one of natures mostferocious creatures less than a foot away.

The Amazing Race takes the Gold for the mostSightings this issue as all the contestants drove Defender110’s to various locations while performing tasks. In therunning for a mug are *Greg Hollingsworth,Colchester, CT, Derek Stevens, Bend, OR, Greg Liebig,Bel Air, MD, James Copass, Yucca Valley, CA, JasonSheehy, London, OH, and Chance Geurin, Monument,CO, who says “when the runners came out of the airport,one of the team leaders yelled, ‘Look, there’s the Jeeps!”Jeez!

Lastly, Paul Brodie, Brookline, MA, foundthe following Range Rover ad in ‘Bell’Italia’ while travel-ing in Italy. “Qui troviamo una pubblicit scomparto inBell’Italia del ` ‘per una nuova Range Rover, con i 4.4 litriV8 o 3.0 motore di litro Td6.”

Gentlemen:

Yesterday I sent you an e-mail with a snap of aLand Rover on a billboard advertising WestEdmonton Mall. I forgot to send our mailingaddress, just in case it qualifies for a coffee mug.I have attached that picture again, along withone of our 1966 SWB showing a partial load ofthe 12 Heathcote kids.

Our recently acquired 1985 110 givesus greatly appreciated higher seating capacity.The light brown 110 is a Canadian Army surplus1985 Rover (40,000 Km) acquired by me in2004. It is painted in light brown camo for usein Afghanistan. It was converted to a low techstealth vehicle by mixing clay into the paint thatit now bears. The truck is now being modifiedto a five seat crew cab to suit the needs of ourfamily.

Another I own is a red 88 Series llA,driven daily since 1970. I am an aircraft mainte-nance engineer, and I drove this type of Roverwith the International Red Cross, out ofWellington, New Zealand, serving in South

Vietnam in 1969. When I came back to Canada Isimply had to have one of my own.

Blue 88 is a 1964 Series llA owned bymy son Mike, acquired in 2003 for $1500 (CDN)and now a daily driver. Electrical systems werecompletely redone with 500 feet of aircraft wire.

The Heathcote family included 2 bio-logical and 10 adopted children from variouscountries that Sue (wife) and I have worked withInternational relief organizations for the past 30years. Series Land Rovers have been integral inour transportation everywhere we have servedand for our family in St.Albert.

Our Landies serve us well, to work,

school, groceries and kid sport activities in allCanadian weather. Best of all is summer, roof off,windshield flat, and bugs in the teeth.

Dear Editor,

This Spring revealed a few Rover Sighting in funand exotic places.

While in Anguilla, BWI March ‘04 arare 109 was spotted in an island locals’ back

yard. During the same vacation, on a trip over toMarigot, St. Martin, we discovered that thearmored vehicles used on the French side if theislands are 110’s. As long as we weren’t photo-graphing the armed guard with it, they allowedus to snap a picture. Security forces are alsousing the 110 as their vehicle of choice.

While on a medical mission trip toNicaragua the first week of May ‘04,Amy spotteda late 70’s Series while traveling to their villagesite I Diriamba on the rod from Jinotepe. Sorry,Amy was quick with the camera, but not quickenough to get a good look at the grill.
