When I first started in my new role my wife gave me a card that lives in my office. I see it every day but I don’t always SEE it. It has a quote on the front from Mahatma Gandhi which is quite simple but quite complex at the same time. “You must be the change you wish to see in this world.” It is quite simple at first reading but quite complex as you dig deeper into it. What is the change I wish to see in the world? What do I have to do to be that change? I was walking across the yard today as the rain started to come in. I saw 2 children heading in to the play equipment and as I was just about to let them know that playing in the rain was not the best decision they could make I noticed that they were actually picking up the sports equipment to put it away before it blew away. Earlier this week I saw some of our older students on the friendship bench with a younger student. They were trying to work out if she was upset or lonely and exploring ways to help her. They had not been asked to do that, they had just noticed a student on their own and felt they should do something about it. The Gandhi quote was being lived out in front of me both times. Seeing the actions of those involved reminded me how people all over the world live out that notion of being the change they wish to see in the world by seeing a need and doing something about it. My thoughts then went immediately to a great Australian whose feast day we celebrated today. Saint Mary MacKillop lived by the motto “Never see a need without doing something about it” and it was wonderful to see our students living that out. There are many other examples I could have given where our students have seen a need and done something about it. I then thought of how our staff live out other words of Mary MacKillop; “We must teach more by example than by word.I have been a witness to the constant example our teachers are to our students, how supportive, patient, caring and committed to the well-being and education of all at Stella Maris they are. I sat back, sipped my coffee, and reflected on how fortunate I am to be teaching in a school community whose members; students, staff and families, live out the words of Mahatma Gandhi and Saint Mary MacKillop. For Stella Maris it is the norm rather than the exception. Gary Pascoe PRINCIPAL 1 Syme Ave, Seacombe Gardens SA 5047 Phone: 8296 3928 Fax: 8377 2232 [email protected] www.smps.catholic.edu.au

It is quite simple at first reading but quite complex as you dig deeper into it. What is the change I wish to see in the world? What do I have to do to be that change?
