STELLA MARISNEWSLETTER

Term 2Issue 19

17 June 2016

Dear Stella Community,

Educational Agenda As we move towards a federal election, debate over education is sure to figure in the politics. In recent years we have seen a push to drive school improvement with federal policy to introduce quality assurance measures, a national accreditation scheme for initial teacher education courses, a literacy and numeracy test for graduates and certification of teachers against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers introduced into state and territory registration requirements.

The recent release of Australia’s PISA rankings has put numeracy and literacy in the headlines as well as generating discussion on what curriculum should take priority in schools. The ABC documentary series, ‘Revolution School’, has sparked interest in the importance of sound and forward-thinking leadership in schools. A recent article in The Age, The formula for the perfect school principal, proffered a mathematical plan for finding the perfect school leader. According to University of Melbourne economist, Mick Coelli, principals boost performance if they set goals, promote professional development and encourage staff collaboration. Stella Maris is working to promote learning through our Quality Teaching Program (in collaboration with the University of Newcastle’s David Roy) and our 2016 STAR Learning Framework focus on Intellectual Quality: Academic Excellence.

Thanks Thank you to the many families who supported the Stella Water Polo Team who spent Saturday washing cars to raise funds for their trip to Hawaii to play in an international tournament. Thanks to Mrs Wickham, Mrs Kelly and the parents who came and assisted on the day.

Music Showcase Congratulations to the many talented students from Year 7 to Year 12 who participated in our Stella Music Showcase on Wednesday night. It was a terrific evening with a range of music styles from classical to show tunes, individual, group and band performances. What a great effort and thank you to the Performing Arts team who assisted the girls and let them shine.

A reading from the Gospel of John

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you all things and bring to your

remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace

I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I

give to you. Let not your hearts be

troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:26-27

This week as we see the news and reflect on the tragedy in Orlando, let us remember that God

is always with us.

MissionLast year Stella Maris held an Awareness Walk to develop empathy for children in the Philippines and other countries who walk long distances for the opportunity of an education.

This year, we are having a ‘Stella Sleep Out’ in the middle of Term 3 to empathise with rough sleepers and raise money for the Good Samaritan Inn and the Kinder School in the Philippines.

We don’t want to be a school that simply raises money for charity. We want to develop understanding and compassion in our students by providing these opportunities. We are committed to our Good Samaritan partners as we know that 100% of the money goes directly to the people in need and our students have opportunities to visit these communities during their time at Stella.

Information about the Sleep Out, Friday, 26 August

• The Sleep Out will be held Friday, 26 August on the Stella Maris College basketball court and in C Block • This is a voluntary event • Students need to register for the event on Moodle (information will be emailed) • Due to limited space the experience is only open to Stella students • There will be a security guard and adequate staff present on the night • Students will experience a ‘soup kitchen’ for dinner • Students are required to raise sponsorship for the event so payment doesn’t fall on their parents. The minimum amount required for a space is $50/person • Students bring their own sleeping bag and mat or cardboard to sleep on • The Sleep Out will conclude on Saturday morning, 27 August, by 9am (before breakfast)

Sport

Jenny Wickham, Sports Coordinator

SPORT REPORTSoft Sand ClassicCongratulations to Tamsyn Curley, Molly Bell and Lara Cherry who represented Stella Maris in the Soft Sand Classic at Manly Beach last Monday.

The girls ran the 9km event as a team, with each of them running a 3km leg of the race. The girls all ran very well, and as a team they won the Open Secondary Schools Female division. The girls were racing against open aged school teams, so for our team of Year 8 girls to win is an outstanding result.

Well done Lara, Molly and Tamsyn!

Water PoloGood luck to the open water polo teams who will be playing in the semi finals of the Open A Division of the NSSWPA competition on Friday, 17 June. The games are at the following times at the Warringah Aquatic Centre:

Stella A vs St Lukes at 7.20pm Stella B vs Brigidine at 7.43pm

Hawaii Water Polo Team Car WashWell done to our Hawaii water polo team who held their fundraising car wash last Saturday at Benedict Campus. The girls worked really hard all day and washed plenty of cars! Not only did the girls raise lots of money but it was a great experience in team work and hard work! Well done girls!

Performing ArtsCongratulations to all our musicians who performed in Wednesday evening’s Showcase. The girls were simply amazing and should be congratulated on their talent and dedication and on the professionalism of their performances.

I would like to acknowledge our Music staff for their unfailing support of our girls: Evan Browett, Leanne Haines, Melanie Pells, Rob Sutcliffe, Mitchell Smith (Sound and Lighting)

A special mention has to go to Rachel Ewins, Yr 11, who put the Cirque Du Soleil video together.
