DESIGN NEWSInternational Day of the Girl

On Wednesday, a group of lucky Year 9 students, along with Mr Wong and Mr Mellis were privileged to attend an inspiring presentation hosted by the ABC ME channel at their studios at Ultimo.

In 2012, the UN established 11 October as the International Day of the Girl. This day highlights and addresses the needs and challenges that young girls face in our society, whilst empowering them to be active in promoting the human rights of all girls.

Our girls were entertained by some inspiring keynote speakers who spoke of the inspiration of key women such as Barangaroo who was a Cammeraygal leader of the Eora Nation at the time of European colonialisation. She was a fiercely independent woman who staunchly stood up for her rights to maintain her traditional way of life.

The presentation featured winning drama and documentary films that were jointly funded by Screen Australia, all of which were written and produced by highly talented girls. There was also an insightful panel discussion from some of the brave and inspiring

young women who featured in the films.

The girls were treated to an honest and open discussion from girls who spoke of their personal experiences with racism, sexuality and identity issues as well as dealing with the pressures of living up to adult expectation of what young girls “should” be like in our society. Overall, the girls were encouraged to take their opportunities, work hard and be passionate about what they do, but most of all, be themselves.

Thank you to the ABC for organising such an inspiring event to highlight the incredible difference all girls can make in our society.

SportSAILING NEWSSailing Lessons for Stella Students

Wednesday afternoon of Week 1, Term 4 saw the beginning of the 2017/2018 Sailing Program. This is the third time the College has offered sailing and our students are responding with great enthusiasm.

Stella Maris and Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) have partnered so that students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have the opportunity to sail through MHYC’s Discover Sailing Centre which is fully accredited with Australian Sailing. Students sail in Melges 20 keelboats with qualified and experienced instructors who teach across all skill levels.

Ultimately, students will progress to crewing in Yacht Club races across Australia or perhaps even crewing on yachts overseas. We may also join an Inter-School Racing Competition in the future.

If students would like to join for this term’s sailing, please email [email protected] as soon as possible.
