At assembly I spoke to the girls about JK Rowling and her book Very Good Lives, written to record her commencement address given at Harvard University. The address focused on two topics close to her heart: the benefits of failure and the importance of imagination. Rowling begins her book by explaining that she was convinced that all she ever wanted to do was to write novels. But her parents both came from poor backgrounds and they wanted her to take a vocational degree at college and get a safe position in society. She explained, ‘What I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty but failure. We all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure but the world is eager to give you a set of criteria, if you let it.’ So seven years after graduation Rowling considered herself a failure - no job, a failed marriage and she felt she had hit rock bottom. She said, ‘Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learned no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will and more discipline than I had suspected. I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies.’ The second theme that Rowling spoke of was the importance of imagination. ‘Imagination’ she says, ‘is not only the human capacity to envision that which is not, it is the power that enables us to empathise with humans whose experiences we have never shared’. One of Rowling’s first jobs was working for Amnesty International. There she read scribbled letters smuggled out of totalitarian regimes by men and women who were risking imprisonment to inform the outside world of what has happening to them. Every day she was reminded of how fortunate she was to live in a country with a democratically elected government where legal representation and public trial were the rights of every person. One of the things that Rowling said she learned during her study of the Classics at university was expressed in the words of the Greek author Plutarch: ‘What we achieve inwardly will change our outer reality’- Our inescapable connection with the outside world means that we touch other people’s lives simply by existing. So I asked the Graduates of Stella Maris 2017: “How are you going to touch other people’s lives? You are intelligent, hard working young women and understand your responsibilities as educated women of the 21st Century instilled with the Benedictine values of hospitality, stewardship, peace, justice and community as guides. You have been lucky to live in Australia, where many doors are open to you. But what will your future be? Will you risk failure, as JK Rowling did, to follow your passion? Will you use your influence to raise your voice on behalf of those who have no voice? If you can imagine yourself in the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence but the many people whose lives you help change.” As JK Rowling explains, ‘We carry the power we need inside ourselves already; we have the power to imagine better.’ Or as the Roman philosopher Seneca said, ‘As is a tale, so is life; not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.’ Elizabeth Carnegie, Principal

Prayer for Graduation

God of Love and Wisdom

I have knowledge, so show me now how to use it wisely

and find a way

To make the world I live in a little better place,

And make life with its problems a little bit easier to

face.

Grant me faith and courage and put purpose in my days,

And show me how to work for the good of others.

Let my education, my knowledge and my skill

Find their true fulfilment.

And may I ever be aware in everything I do,

That knowledge comes from learning, and wisdom comes

from You.

Amen.

from the PrincipalDear Stella Community,

Vale Year 12 2017 This week we bid farewell to our Year 12 students with an assembly, morning tea, Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony. This evening the Year 12 Parents/Carers are hosting a celebration evening for families.

I also found out that I had friends whose value was truly above the price of rubies.’

The second theme that Rowling spoke of was the importance of imagination.

If you can imagine yourself in the lives of those who do not have your advantages, then it will not only be your proud families who celebrate your existence but the many people whose lives you help change.”

As JK Rowling explains, ‘We carry the power we need inside ourselves already; we have the power to imagine better.’ Or as the Roman philosopher Seneca said, ‘As is a tale, so is life; not how long it is, but how good it is, is what matters.’

YEAR 11 IMMERSIONIn the holiday break, three of our Year 11 students and Mr Smith will be heading on an immersion experience to the Philippines to visit our Good Samaritan Kinder School and community there. As a poor community, the basic needs are often not met and it can be as simple as a blanket to lie on. One of our lovely mums in Year 9, Mrs Bronny Skordos, has kindly donated hand-made baby quilts that she and her team of quilters have made. Each of them is a unique design and has been carefully created to suit the needs of children. They have spent many hours sewing with love and have produced a massive 35 quilts for the Stella girls to take over. We are so thankful to Bronny and her team who have given the children over there a brand new quilt to own. I know Sr Leonie (Principal of the Good Samaritan Kinder School, Bacolod) and Sr Grace (who runs the community outreach centre) will be so pleased and thankful for their support. We have such a compassionate and caring community at Stella!

Performing ArtsDRAMA NEWSI just wanted to take a moment to write to you and express my gratitude to each of the girls in Year 11 Drama for contributing to what has been a wonderful class that has created this great production from the research phase, rehearsal period and during production! Their professionalism and highly capable of acting captivated their audience throughout the play and their performances, both individually and as an ensemble, were the best they had ever given.

The girls will be pleased to know that from their production of Blackrock, they raised $255 for the Manly Women's Shelter, which will assist in the funding of accommodation for women in need, provide meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and ultimately offer comfort to someone in a time of need. This was their initiative to raise money for a chosen organisation and they really should be proud of their amazing efforts! Well done Year 11 Drama!!

SportSPORT REPORTPeninsula Cup Soccer Champions A fantastic season has been had by the Open Girls Soccer team. The girls played consistently all term defeating Mater in the semi final. Yesterday they played Oxford Falls Grammar School in an exciting match. At half time the score was 2-1 with Sophie Tetley and Alana Biasi having scored great goals. During the second half both teams were incredibly strong and the Stella defence could not be broken. It is very fitting that Nell Breslin one of our Yr 12 girls playing her final match for Stella Maris, broke through the Oxford Falls defence to score the final goal of the match and secure the win for Stella Maris 3-1. A big thankyou also to Grace Kaley and Sarah Staples for playing as goalies in both finals. The season was a great team effort. Well done to the following team members: Jasmine Riggs, Daisy Young, Alana Biasi, Kirra Bullman, Grace Kaley, Zoe Evans, Nell Breslin, Sarah Staples, Annabelle Gilbert, Rosie Caracio, Molly Bell, Sophie Tetley, Charlie Gilbert and Sofia Maruca.Farewell Sarah, Nell and Zoe, our Year 12 team members who have contributed so much to Stella Soccer in their six years at the College. You will be missed by your team mates.

NSWCCC Athletics Congratulations to the nine Stella girls who competed at the NSWCCC Athletics Carnival at Homebush on Friday, 15 September. The performances by the Stella girls were absolutely outstanding. We won more medals at this level than we have ever won before! Special mention to Emma Mahon, Sophie Wickham, Amy Polikowski and Sydney Kania who won gold medals in their events and are now NSWCCC Champions!

Well done to the following girls on these outstanding results: Megan Edwards: 5th in 200m, 6th in 100m. Emily Smith: 3rd in 400m. Water Polo Well done to the three Stella Water Polo teams who have played in semi finals and grand finals of the NSSWPA competition this week.

The Year 7 finals night was on Friday, 15 September. Stella had both teams playing in the semi final. Stella Green was unlucky to lose a close game against Brigidine, while Stella Red had an easy win over Pymble to progress through to the grand final. Stella Red then went on to beat Brigidine convincingly in the grand final. Congratulations Stella Red on being the Premiers of the Year 7 NSSWPA competition!

Stella Red: Soraya Gerritsen, Kylah Whyte, Olivia Fernie, Jocelyn Fallon, Sophie Mather, Holly Foster, Mia Tamhane, Margaux Seib and Ciara*.

The grand final for the intermediate division of the NSSWPA competition was held on Monday, 18 September. Stella A faced a very strong Mackellar side. Our girls took the lead early in the game, but Mackellar caught us just before the full time siren, forcing the game into extra time. It was a very tough game, but Mackellar ended up defeating the Stella girls 5 - 4. Special mention to Charley Porter who played extremely well in goalie all game. Well done the the Stella A team: Hayley Economos, Tamsyn Curley, Kiana Dettman, Sophia Thomas, Arabella Condon, Charley Porter, Juliette Nankervis, Claudia Wolff, Olivia Lovell and Bailey Reimer. A big thank you to Mrs Tineke Palmer who has managed the team all season.

Touch Football The NSW Touch Football Regional Years 7/8 Gala Day was held at Nolan’s Reserve on Tuesday, 19 September. Stella had three teams playing in this carnival. All three teams played extremely well, with both Stella A and Stella B making the semi finals. It was going to be tough for both teams in the semis, playing against very strong teams from Narrabeen Sports High and Mackellar girls.
