This may be done prior to the child’s birth. MARRIAGE We are unable to accommodate all of the requests for weddings at Stella Maris. To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. 19 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 12, 2018 PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL THE SICK IN OUR PARISH If anyone wishes to receive Communion and is unable to come to Mass, call Jason Vaughan at 843-883-3044. My Dear People, Wednesday is the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption (August 15) and a holy day

of obligation. You can find the Mass schedule elsewhere in this bulletin. Your response to this column last week regarding the former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick prompted me to write a letter to all American Cardinals. Copies will be in the church and hall. Feel free to sign or not. Our parish web page (StellaMarisChurch.org) can link you to an online version. The deadline for signing the printed copies is Tuesday, September 4.

To the American Members of the College or Cardinals: “We, the undersigned members of the Christian faithful, mindful of the exhortation of the Second Vatican Council that the laity “should openly reveal … their needs and desires” to the spiritual shepherds of the Church, and that the laity are “sometimes even obliged to express their opinions on those things which concern the good of the Church” (LG 37, Canon 212.2&3) in faithful discharge of our responsibilities as members of the Body of Christ, submit to you, the American members of the College of Cardinals, the following: We profess our love for Christ’s Church, its clergy and laity. We take seriously our mission to bring the Gospel to our world. We are not unmindful of the frailties of human nature and the forgiveness of God both for laity and clergy. However, we cannot tolerate the intolerable. The scandals associated with former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick reveal predatory and abusive behavior which has been known for years even as he rose to the highest ranks of the Church’s hierarchy. While he wounded and harmed the innocent, he continued to be promoted in the life of the Church. No community, even secular, can accept these egregious offenses against human dignity and common decency. Much less, can the Body of Christ or its leaders simply remove an offender of this type and move forward without a meaningful reform of systemic evil, collusion, and denial. This corruption reaches the highest levels of the Church. We turn, therefore, to those who constitute the highest level of Church authority, to those who are called to serve the Bishop of Rome as his collaborators and advisers. We know neither the depth of this evil nor all its remedies. We do know this:

1. Beginning with the Roman Curia, there must be a cleansing of those who by action or silence were complicit in the rise of a known sexual predator in the ranks of the Church.

2. Pope Francis must effectively pursue the thorough reform of the Roman Curia and its finances to which he was called by his election.

3. Those who are called to advise Pope Francis must make clear to him that the accustomed secrecy and denials cannot exist in today’s world. He cannot at the same time accuse the Chilean people of calumny when they present their legitimate complaints against Bishop Juan Barros and claim to be interested in reform. He can no longer wait to be forced to remove offenders.

4. Pope Francis must be challenged regarding the role of Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga as a nominal reformer coordinating C9, the Council of nine Cardinals, supposedly overseeing reform. The complaints from Maradiaga’s seminarians regarding moral turpitude in his seminary cannot be answered by calling these forthright men “gossipers.”

5. If Pope Francis is unable or unwilling to effect the necessary reforms, we hereby petition you to exercise your office and invite him to step aside, after the example of Pope Benedict, to allow for the election of a Pontiff who can and will effect true reform starting with the Roman Curia.

We recognize the great works of goodness in the Church and within the Roman Curia. We love the Church and we wish to bring our children, all youth and all people of good will to the joy of being Catholic. We cannot tolerate this breach of trust and respect. We will not accept bureaucratic nostrums about convening panels for discussion or the creation of policies. The Gospels suffice. Regardless of its effect on ecclesiastical careers or personal popularity in Rome, we exhort you to do what must be done. We assure you of our prayers for the success of your mission.”

PARISH NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Religious Education classes will resume on Sunday, September 9th. If you did not receive registration information via email, registration forms are available in the parish center or on the parish website: stellamarischurch.org. ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING YOU’VE EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the means of inquiry into the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church. If you are considering becoming a Catholic, or just interested in learning more about the Church in a friendly, informal environment, plan to attend RCIA Inquiry Classes. We will begin on Tuesday, September 11th, at 6:30 p.m. in the small cottage across the street from the front of the Church. There is no obligation, only an opportunity to learn. If interested, please call Jason Vaughan at 843-883-3044.

STELLA MARIS WOMEN’S CLUB NEWS

The SMWC is looking for NEW parishioners, and “seasoned” members, to share their talents. The plans for next Club year are exciting; don’t miss out. Our organization will grow BIGGER and BETTER only by participation of all our women, ages 21 and over, who want to MAKE NEW FRIENDS, who are SERVICE ORIENTED, and who wish to GROW SPIRITUALLY. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Looking for a Few Strong Backs…

The Society of St Vincent de Paul is looking for any volunteers willing to donate a few hours on a regular basis (about every 5th Saturday morning) to pick up furniture donations to be distributed to those needy in our area. Often, the donations go to homeless vets getting back on their feet or to families with kids who are sleeping on the floor, don’t have desks, tables, etc. If you would like to volunteer, or if you have any questions, please contact Elaine McLaughlin at [email protected].

STELLA MARIS MEN’S CLUB NEWS

The Stella Maris Men’s Club seeks to provide opportunities for fellowship for the men of the Parish through Spiritual, Service, and Social activities and to provide support and assistance to the parish as a whole. We will have our meetings on the second Tuesday of each month from September to May. Please consider attending our first meeting of the year on September 11th, at 6:30pm in the parish hall. Dues are $3 per year. Dinner costs $7 including a beverage.

MENS CLOTHING NEEDED

St. Vincent de Paul Society members will be outside the church and hall at all Masses August 18 and 19 to accept donations of new or "gently used" CLEAN mens' clothing (all sizes) for clients of the Neighborhood House downtown (Sisters of Charity). This is a one-weekend only drive for summer and transitional items including shorts, jeans, khakis, workman-type pants (dickies), t-shirts, "polo" shirts, short-sleeved shirts, belts, “new or laundered” hats, NEW socks/underwear, and, new or used SHOES/SNEAKERS. Also, needed are toiletries (including hotel size) and lightweight raingear. PLEASE, NO SPORTS COATS, TIES, DRESS TROUSERS, OR SWEATERS!!

It would be helpful if pants and polo or collared shirts were already on hangers, but it's not necessary. T-shirts and shorts can be folded. Cloth grocery bags (new or used) are also needed. Please call Joe Hann on (443) 896-8899 or Joanne Winchester on (843) 883-0205 for more information. As always, thank you for your loving and generous support of those less fortunate.

PRO-LIFE ROSARY

The Priests for Life organization has called for each Catholic to pray fervently for the closing of their local abortion facility. Please join The Reverend H. Gregory West, Pastor of St Clare of Assisi on Daniel Island, who will lead the Rosary and prayers at the Planned Parenthood Abortion facility at 1312 Ashley River Road (corner of Hwy 61 & Fuseler) on Saturday, August 18, 2018 from 8-9AM. For information call Stephen Boyle at 843-763-0681.

THE CITADEL

The Department of Cadet Activities at The Citadel is looking for families that would be willing to become a sponsor family for 4th class (freshman) cadets. A sponsor family provides a home away from home two to four times a month, during general leave (free time) for 2-3 freshmen cadets. During their free time, these young men and women ask for very little – a place to “hang out”, sleep, watch TV, sometimes even study, and have a home cooked meal. More importantly, they often need someone to just talk to or listen to them. With nearly 400 out-of-state freshmen coming to The Citadel, we are in need of many sponsors/families. If you have questions or want additional information, please e-mail me at [email protected] . In advance, thank you for your consideration.

PART TIME POSITION AVAILABLE

Christ Our King-Stella Maris School has a part time position available in our after school program, Mondays and Fridays from 2:45-6:00pm. For information, contact Mrs. Splendido at [email protected]. We also have a part-time position available in our lunch program, Mondays and Fridays from 10:00am-1:00pm. For more information, please contact Bradley Morrow by email at [email protected].
