REMINDER

Please remember to take your valuables with you when you go to Mass. There have been several break-ins in the parking lot.

As we go about our days, we necessarily label, classify, and prioritize. What's "in" and what's "out" on our priority list? Because humans are social be-ings, we tend to do the same thing with people. We can only invite six people to the dinner party. Our young child wants to invite certain friends to her birthday, but we're keenly aware of who the parents are, and the prospect of spending sever-al hours with them is enough to give us pause.

In today's Gospel, Jesus' disciples face a classifi-cation problem. They've seen another person driving out demons in the name of Jesus. They recognize him, a non-Apostle, as clearly "out." And yet "Jesus replied, 'Do not prevent him ? whoever is not against us is for us." Jesus recogniz-es real faith in the would-be exorcist. In our own lives, Jesus invites us to recognize others' good in-tentions. They should not be cut off simply be-cause they do not line up with all our personal preferences. What, then, is deserving of such a fate?

"If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off ? if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out."

When his listeners blame others, Jesus tends to pivot the conversation to their own lives. In this case, the message is clear. What we really need to cut out is that which keeps us from Jesus. If over-commitment causes us to lose patience with our family, doubt God's providence, and become consumed with self-reliance, cut something out. If certain friendships lead us time after time into gossip and slander, cut it out. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to live intentionally in our disciple-ship. Are we ready?

War broke out in heaven, with Michael and his Angels in combat against the dragon. –Rev 12:7

Reflection: The devil and his followers thought they could be like God by their own choice. But Michael’s name means “Who is like God?” Only God’s choice can exalt us to His throne.

The battle between pro-life and pro-choice is the same battle. Some think their own choice, rather than God’s, determines right and wrong.

Prayer: Sovereign Lord, may all acknowledge that You alone are God, and that Your choice, not our own, exalts us.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS

All the good works we do are informed by our four core principles: Charity –Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. Unity – None of us is as good as all of us. Members of the Knights of Co-lumbus all know that – together – we can accom-plish far more than any of us could individual-ly. Fraternity – Venerable Michael J. McGivney

founded the Knights of Columbus, in large part, to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when the family breadwinner died. Patriotism – We are proud of our de-votion to God and country and be-lieve in standing up for both. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

My oldest son is named Nathanael. We used the biblical spelling of his first name, and he has spent his entire life of 20 plus years having to correct people who try to spell his name. Those who have not met him before have no idea for sure how to spell his name. Of course, when we named him, we gave him a name that not only his friends would know him by, but by which God would know him.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells Nathanael that he is "a true child of Israel." Nathanael wonders how Jesus knew him. Jesus knows him before he even speaks to him. Jesus knows us and calls us

to believe in him. However, do we know him enough to be willing to follow him?

Many of our sons and daughters believe in Jesus. We believe in Jesus. He

knows us all better than we know ourselves. But do we truly know him? Do we have a genuine relationship with him? Have we allowed him to transform our lives? I know my son believes in Je-sus. I believe in Jesus. I hope and pray we both can grow to know Jesus at least half as much as he knows us.

--Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

ST. JEROME

Biblical scholars and translators owe a great debt to the model and stand-ard that Jerome, 345-420, set for all biblical scholarship. Jerome was con-sidered the greatest biblical scholar of his day, conversant with Latin, Greek, and He-brew. He set about translating the books of the Bible from their original languages into Latin.

Much of Jerome's correspondence with his con-temporaries has survived and gives us a powerful glimpse into the kind of person that he was, as well as the time in which he lived. Jerome eventu-ally became Pope Damasus' (366-384) personal secretary. In the West, Latin was overtaking Greek as the language of the common people. The pope desired a translation of the Bible that would be accurately translated from the original lan-guages into the language and idiom of the peo-ple. Previous Latin translations existed, but they were poor in quality.

Jerome set about this task and spent the rest of his life meticulously translating. He is credited with the translation of the Bible know as the Vulgate, a Latin translation intended to address the needs of the common people. That translation became the standard and the only one used by Catholics until modern times. Catholic Christians did not ac-tively engage in a similar process until 1943, when Pius XII allowed Catholic scholars once again to go back to the original languages and translate an accurate and meticulous version of the Bible into the languages of the common people. We carry on that tradition to this very day.

We celebrate St. Jerome’s Feast Day on Septem-ber 30th.
