Notes from Father Nick...

If you wish to be placed on the prayer chain or if you want your names removed, we respectfully ask that you make that request to the Parish Office or

Dot Hellkamp (472-5282).

Congratulations to Bob and Diana Fischer, who will celebrate 50 years of Marriage on January 11th. We offer this prayer for them and for all married couples who are celebrating anniversaries. “Lord, we thank you for this couple

and for all of the years that they have been together. As we celebrate their anniversary, our prayer is that you will continue to bless them. Let their testimony of love and forgiveness be a help to other couples as they start their

own journeys into married life. Lord we pray that You will honor their commitment to each other

and to You granting them many more years of happiness together.” Amen

Today we conclude our celebration of Christmas with the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus. That event also marks the beginning of our Lord’s public ministry and his proclamation of the Kingdom of God, now present in the world. This is a good day for you to remember your own baptisms and as parents of younger children, to talk to them about their baptisms as well. Maybe show them pictures of that day, the name of the church, the priest and godparents. Because this is the beginning of their life as Christians, it would be an educational moment as well. Remember that one of the statements in the liturgy of baptism is this: “Parents, you will be the first teachers of your child in the ways of faith. May you be also the best of teachers, bearing witness to the faith by what you say and do, in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Stay safe! Praying for you all!

A Prayer for Persons Suffering from the Coronavirus

You shall not fear the terror of the night nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that roams in darkness, nor the plague that ravages at noon.

Ps 91:5-6

Merciful God, hear our fervent prayer for all who suffer from the coronavirus. May those who are infected receive the proper treatment

and the comfort of your healing presence. May their caregivers, families and neighbors be shielded

from the onslaught of the virus. Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones.

Protect and guide those who strive to find a cure, that their work may conquer the disease and restore communities to wholeness and health. Help us to rise above fear. We ask all this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes,

and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

When God Whispers

“You don’t need to shout. My hearing works just fine.” Are you a parent that has used that one on your kids? I’m not sure at what age they realize that the volume of their voice doesn’t correlate to the likelihood of receiving a favorable reply — it might be sometime in the teenage years, when the talking slows down altogether. But I’ve got to admit, it would be nice if God always gave us a loud and dramatic sign when He wanted something — the booming voice and the torn-open heavens (“This is my beloved Son!”) really get the message across. Sometimes I find myself envious of the Apostles, who were able to witness such things in person. The fact of the matter is, in the year 2021, God is more likely to speak in a whisper than in a shout. The prophet Isaiah forewarns that Christ himself will not be a noisemaker — for all his preaching, he will not cry out or shout to bring forth justice to the nations. His way is altogether different than that. We are not the Apostles, and we do not have the privilege of seeing the Holy Spirit descend on Christ like a dove. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t need to shout. Our spiritual hearing works just fine. We just have to be listening. Let’s wake up each morning ready to hear God’s whispers throughout the day. Let’s make a conscious effort to invite those whispers into our hearts, where they can become a catalyst for grace in this world. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
