ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SVDP SOCIETY UPDATE
Trusting God and trusting othersThe readings this week teach that God esteems the poor for their total trust in him. So often we meet people who have this trust.
Often they name it as a trust in God, sometimes it is a trust in the goodness of people and sometimes it is a trust in agencies who receive funds from the government. It is a trust all the same; they know they cannot cover all of their bills with their income and yet they are not despairing. They have humbled themselves to ask for help.
When people call the St. Vincent de Paul Society helpline, they usually request help with rent, utilities, or food. With your financial support we are able to help them with these corporal needs. We also have an opportunity to encourage them personally as they deal with their struggles, as well as provide information on education and employment opportunities and other resources. We tell them we are volunteers and our funds come from people in our church who care about them and pray for them. We want them to understand that it is really God who is providing for them, through us, and we encourage them to pray and join a church.
Most have some experience with church, but many have fallen away. When we asked a young woman with three small children if she had a home church, she answered yes, but she hadn’t been for several years. She said she attended with her grandmother and we could see in her face that she was recalling an easier time in her life. We encouraged her to return and find that support again.
A man in his thirties on dialysis, told us when he was in foster care he went to Catholic School for a few years. He started reminiscing. Something clearly stirred in him and we encouraged him to watch Mass on TV since he couldn’t leave his house.
After praying with a woman at the end of a visit, she was tearful and thanked us because she had forgotten how it felt to be close to God.
There are others we meet whose faith and trust are totally inspiring to us. A woman with multiple health issues shared with us that she looked forward to death because she trusted fully in the promise of heaven where there is no pain. She was cheerful and hopeful. As we turned and talked more about her financial needs and how much her son was able to help with, she expressed her frustration that he wasn’t going to church. She huffed, “He says he is doing okay and doesn’t need it. He’s doing okay only because I’m praying for him.” Her faith was inspiring.

Heavenly Father, We thank you for all of your blessings and for your unfailing love that makes
us your sons and daughters. Your providence has guided our steps each and every day. Through the hands of
St. Joseph, we offer our church project to you. May it bring glory and honor to
your name, and inspire the conversion of souls for generations to come.
Send your Holy Spirit upon us and open our hearts to generously respond to your call, so that, like St. Jude, we might set the world on fire with your
love and truth.
We ask this through the intercession of Saint Jude and in the name of Jesus
Christ Our Lord.
Amen.
