And the deceased…………..

Did you ever wonder why... The carol “A Partridge in a Pear Tree” is sung at Christmas? It‟s because the twelve days between

Christmas and Epiphany were used by English Catholics in 1558 after the religious persecutions to explain

their faith without exciting suspicion. The “true love” of the carol is God; the partridge is a symbol of

Christ. The two turtle doves represent the sacrifice Jewish parents made in the temple -- the Mass is the

new sacrifice. The three French hens symbolize the Magi and their gifts but also faith, hope and charity,

the prime virtues. The four calling birds mean the four Gospels, while the five gold rings hint at the first

five books of the Bible. The six geese a-laying are the six days of creation. The seven swans a-

swimming are the seven gifts of the Spirit and the seven works of mercy. The eight milk maids are the

eight beatitudes, while the nine ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Spirit. The ten lords a-leaping

symbolize the ten commandments and the eleven pipers the eleven apostles (without Judas). The twelve

drummers point to the twelve beliefs of the Apostles‟ Creed. How is that for catechism!

A message from the Good Samaritan Council Knights of Columbus St. Stephen Parish

One of our goals is to grow awareness of our council and membership with the Knights of Columbus. The Good Samaritan Council has been here at St. Stephen Parish for the past eight years, and we are extending an invitation and welcoming you to join us. If you are not a member and are 18 years or older and would like more information, please feel free to contact Karol Lozinski at 773-4951 or [email protected] Remember the Knights are here to serve our church and those in need! God Bless you!

Yesterday, we celebrated the solemnity of Mary Mother of God, and although the Epiphany of our Lord superseded the solemnity this year, I want to speak a little about what we celebrate when the secular world celebrates New Year‟s Day. One common question about the feast day is, why do we celebrate a Marian feast on News Year‟s Day? As we know, Christmas Day begins the octave of Christmas, and before Vatican II (as far back as 546 in Southern Italy), January 1 originally celebrated the circumcision of Jesus during the eighth day of the octave of Christmas (still celebrated in parts of the Eastern Rite). The foundation for this celebration comes from Luke 2:21, “When eight days were completed for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.” Circumcision was a sacrament under the old law, and the first legal observance of Jewish men. It is also significant because theologians note it was the first time Jesus shed blood, which foreshadowed his ultimate sacrifice on the cross. Butler’s Lives of the Saints notes, “The octave of Christmas, and possibly as a consequence of this, a special commemoration is made of the Virgin Mother whose pre-eminent share in the mystery could not adequately be recognized on the feast itself.”

The failure to properly recognize Mary led Paul VI to recognize the solemnity of Mary Mother of God on January 1, which was established in his apostolic letter Mysterii Paschalis (“Of his own Accord”) in 1969. Here, the Church celebrates Mary‟s divine motherhood and her important role in the salvation of humanity. Mary‟s motherhood was not an accident, but an important element in God‟s plan. The question of Mary‟s motherhood as affirmed at the council of Ephesus in 431, and the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium) at Vatican II, affirms this title by referring to Mary as Mother of God (Theotokos) twelve times.

Cardinal Sean O‟Malley of the Archdiocese of Boston gave a very moving pro-life homily in 2020. An excerpt from it follows:

“When the Church raises a prophetic cry, „Choose Life‟, we are performing a great service to all society. Life is sacred. Life is a mystery. Life must be protected, nurtured, respected. The Gospel of Life is the centerpiece of the Church‟s social teaching.

When the value of life is compromised or diminished, all life is at risk. When we give the State the power to determine which human beings are worthy of living and which should be eliminated, what we are doing is opening a Pandora‟s Box that unleashes every kind of injustice and violation of human dignity and jeopardizes the very meaning of democratic coexistence. Rather than societies of people living together, we create a society where people are rejected, marginalized, uprooted and oppressed.

The Church‟s consistent life ethic contrasts with the incoherent proclamation of human rights that fails to protect life when it is most vulnerable.

Human rights, without the right to life, are the Kings New Clothes – it‟s a fraud, an exercise in self-deception.

St. Stephen School was able to donate almost 200 cans of food for the Neighbor's Foundation by having a special dress down day in December. Way to go students!

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year & many blessings in 2022!

The Epiphany of the Lord

To the parents of young children:

Welcome! Relax! St. Stephens is kid friendly! God put the wiggle in children;

Don’t feel you have to suppress those wiggles in God’s house. Consider sitting toward the front

where its easier for your little ones to engage. Quietly explain parts of the Mass to them if they question.

Sing, pray and say responses. Children learn behavior by mimicking you.

If you have to leave the church with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back.

As Jesus said, “Let the children come to me”.

Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings: Tuesday Evenings 6:30-7:30pm St. Stephen Old Church Basement.

For the New Year -- Let’s Count Our Blessings In America, where major pastimes include watching television and viewing social media, it is very easy to fall into the subconscious habit of comparing ourselves -- our wealth, age, beauty, living quarters, clothing, possessions and social status--with the people we see in the media we view. Instead of comparing our lives to the “hand-picked segments of American life” that are portrayed in the media, we need to take a realistic look at where we, Americans, stand in comparison to the rest of the world. Looking at this global “bigger picture” will place our lives into proper perspective. If this doesn‟t make us grateful, nothing will!

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness…you are more blessed than the 1 million people who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation…you are better off than 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death…you are more blessed than 3 billion people of the world.

If you have food and a refrigerator in which to keep it, clothes on your back, a roof overhead, and a warm place to sleep…you are richer than 75% of the world.

If you can read this article, you are more educated than over 2 billion in the world who are illiterate.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace…you rank among the top 8% of the world‟s wealthiest people.

Compared to the rest of the world, we live like royalty! So the next time we begin to compare our standard of living with anyone else‟s, let‟s remember that we really have much for which we can be thankful, including blessings that money can‟t buy.
