Pray With Us

Live the Liturgy

Are we willing to be taught by God? If we are, then we will begin to see things and make judgments using a Divine lens. Often, we perceive things with purely human eyes and reference points. When we do this, reality can lose its Divine spark and we miss what God is trying to say. When using human eyes exclusively, Jesus is at best perceived simply as a prophet who has some wise things to say. The human element has a di9cult time seeing Jesus’ divinity and recognizing him as the Bread of Life that comes down from heaven. We can easily get stuck on Jesus’ human associations and overlook the marvelous wonders God wants us to see. If we really allow our-selves to be taught by God, we will then come to see the truth about Jesus and the abundant everlasting life God oBers. Jesus becomes the key that unlocks all of our relationships: with God, others, ourselves, and creation. He, as the true and lasting bread from heaven, shows us the gifts of faith, hope, and love that God bestows on us. Through this divine lens we see that all life sparkles and glows with God’s love. ©LPi

Our Recently Departed St. Michael Parish extends its sympathy to the family of the following loved one:

parishioner Richard (Dick) Wysong, husband of Pat. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God,

We Remember Our Deceased Relatives and Friends

In This Week’s Gospel August 8, 2021—Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The lens through which we view life makes a diBerence. It also determines who we choose to learn from and what we allow to shape our thoughts and feelings. For many, life is simply what it appears to be, a given that either through evolution or some other means just came to be. There is no apparent rhyme or reason to things and things can be dissected and understood only in terms of what they empirically present. To the person using this lens, a tree is a tree and a Cower is a Cower. Their composition and existence can be understood only to the extent that current human knowledge allows. Through this lens, what gives life purpose and meaning? This lens has an essentially unknown beginning and deNnite end. Once those are accepted, the middle becomes some kind of pursuit of happiness, with values and principles being things that are self-created and found acceptable.

But there is a Divine lens that also exists and deserves mention. It is found when one stumbles upon faith and begins to see things diBerently. This lens is of God and reveals a Divine Energy and Life that Cows through and in all things. Faith then shows us that all that lives come from this one Source of Love. This is the only true lens that can give human beings the purpose and meaning they desperately need. From this perspective, all of life is much more than what is immediately apparent! It now tells and reveals a story about God’s generous, creative, and un-conditional love! The unfolding of the human story is the unfolding of God’s story. What mean-ing our lives have when they are viewed as a part of God’s love aBair with humanity! We are indeed special.

The lens of our faith asks us to learn from Jesus Christ. Jesus, as the real Bread of Life, shows us our eternal destiny and completes and frames our lives. It is only in allowing ourselves to be taught by Jesus, that faith, hope, and love take on much greater importance. All the relation-ships in our lives are now structured and ordered using God’s primary commandment of love. Jesus, then, is not just some man who lived at some point in history. Jesus is the incarnate Son of God who shows us the way, the truth, and the life. Using this lens changes things up a great deal. Looking at the creation that surrounds you and the special unique people you love, what is God trying to teach you about His love for you and the eternal life He wants you to have?

We are excited to announce our “Homecoming Weekend”, which will be held the weekend of September 25-26!

We will have our traditional Knights of Columbus food booth on Saturday (featuring our usual grilled items, as well as jambalaya and brisket mac-n-cheese), and live music by Gee Your Band Smells Terri1c, a popular 1970s show-case band in the evening.

On Sunday, we will celebrate from 12:30-7:00 p.m. with our traditional LaRosa’s Spa-ghetti Dinner and entertainment from the Cincinnati Circus Company, with shows at 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 p.m. We will also have live music from our choir and the Mason School of Rock.

On both days, we will also feature Poker, Ring Toss, Big 6, Beat the Dealer, Hi-Lo, Rou-lette, Bars and Bells, Split the Pot, a StuBed Animal booth, and a basket raSe. We are

also oBering two diBerent raSes: the Grand RaSe, which guarantees the Grand Prize Winner $10,000, plus a chance to win an additional $90,000 in cash; and the Homecoming RaSe, which oBers three diBerent prizes (1st Prize - $1,500 in gift cards, 2nd Prize - an outdoor grilling package valued at $750, and 3rd Prize - $250 in cash). Parishioners will be receiving information in their homes soon about those raSes.

Of course, we will need volunteers to make this event a success! Our plans are still being developed, but we will keep you updated through the parish bulletin, Facebook, and our new event website, www.stmichaelevents.com.

Save the Date!

The Eucharist: Source and Summit of our Lives Get out!

Have you ever visited family or friends and reached a point when you knew it was time to leave? It is not that you have overstayed your welcome, but simply that the hour has become late, vacation has come to an end, or your visit has reached its natural conclusion. We might imagine our host saying, “Get out! I need to get to bed!” or you might Nnd your-self saying, “I really have to get going.”

At the end of Mass, we are told to get out. Not that our host, the Lord himself, is tired of us and wants us out of his house, but rather, that the natural conclusion to our participation in the Eucharist is to be sent out in mission. We are to go out, “glorifying the Lord” by our lives. In the Eucharist, we receive the Lord, are formed and nourished and made ready to live as followers of Jesus Christ in the course of our daily lives. When we think about it in this way, being sent out is part of the purpose in our coming to Mass in the Nrst place.

For the next few weeks, we’ll be reading from the 6th Chapter of the Gospel of John, the “Bread of Life” discourse. Each week, there will be a short article on an aspect of our lives with the Eucharist, written by the Worship o;ce of the Archdiocese.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults St. Michael has a year-round process for bringing new members into the Church. A person can enter the discernment process at any time of the year! The Rite of Reception into the Church can be celebrated throughout the liturgical year when candidates (those who have been previously baptized in another faith) who have completed their discernment process are ready to be received into the Church. The catechumens (those who have not been validly bap-tized) are received into the Church at the Easter Vigil.

Who enters the RCIA process? Often the individuals discerning the Catholic faith were per-sonally invited to begin the discernment process by a current member of the parish, by their spouse, a friend, relative, co-worker, or neighbor.

Do you know of anyone who might be looking at the Catholic faith? If so – invite them!

For more information on the RCIA process, contact Pastoral Associate Tom Giordano at [email protected].

Sacred Symbols Sanctuary Lamp

Ever notice the red sanctuary lamp located in the front of the church, near the taber-nacle? This red candle remains lit whenever the Blessed Sacrament (the consecrated host) is reserved in the tabernacle. It is a reminder to all who approach the tabernacle that they are in the presence of the sacred. The introduction of the sanctuary lamp can be traced back to the thirteenth century. Canon Law 940 states: “A special lamp to indicate and honor the presence of Christ is to burn all times before the tabernacle in which the Most Holy Eucharist is reserved.” The exception to this rule is when the lamp is extinguished between Holy Thursday and the Easter Vigil, when it is relit from the Easter (Paschal) candle.

Grades K—1 Sharing the Gospel In the Old Testament God sent

manna from the sky to Moses and the Israelites. It was

like small pancakes that covered the desert floor. Then

God sent his only Son to die on the cross for us. The body

the world. Because he died on the cross for us, we have

Grades 2—3 Sharing the Gospel In today's Gospel reading, Jesus

compared himself to manna. A long time ago God's people

ate manna in the desert, because there was no other food

to eat. By sending manna falling from the sky every morn-

ing, God taught his people to trust him. Manna tasted

good, and it kept them healthy. God took care of them and

gave them all they needed. Then, hundreds of years later,

God sent Jesus down from heaven, so people could have

everlasting life with him.

Prayer Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus down

from heaven so that we can look forward to living with you

forever in heaven. Amen.
