Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord: The three kings in today’s Gospel traveled a great distance at considerable cost to offer their richest gifts to the Infant Jesus. How far will I go and what will I offer to do homage to this newborn King and Savior?

MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES “Appearances can be deceiving,” the saying goes. As we cele-brate the Epiphania, the “appearing” of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is still true. What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God’s glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and hum-blest of human lives. We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the di-vine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God’s glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Reflections on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: We are to walk always in the light of the Lord. The visit of the Magi is a dra-matic event that symbolizes the universality of Christ’s saving mission on earth. In effect this event tells us that Jesus opened the kingdom of God not only to the Jews, but to all humankind. It is up to each of us to walk in the light of Christ so that we might come to share eternal life in heaven. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today’s first reading is a prophecy about the radiance of the Lord’s light shining on all nations. The second reading speaks of the gentiles as co-heirs, along with the Jews, to the promises of Jesus. The Gospel tells of the visit of the Magi to the child Jesus, and how they were led by a star, fulfilling ancient prophecies.

Volunteers Needed to Visit The Sick at Cedars Sinai Hospital

In his bulletin regarding the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis wrote, “It is my burning desire that during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy...Jesus introduces us to these works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. (Misericordiae Vultus #15). Come share 2 to 4 hours per week with our many Catholic patients as a volunteer Catholic Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister in this corporal work of mercy. You will find this ministry spiritually enriching. We provide an extensive training program that will help you with your patient visits. Please contact Fr. Lester’s Assistant, Cathy, at (310) 967-8528 or [email protected]

Remember this is Cold & Flu Season! Please be thoughtful when you are shaking hands and

taking the cup.

Common tricks strangers use to lure children

Are you familiar with the news show segments testing children’s safety knowledge? They often feature “strangers” trying to lure children with of-fers of ice cream, modeling contracts, or other goodies. They know that while many children are taught to avoid strangers, they may not be taught to recognize abduction tactics. For more information on common tricks predators may use to lure chil-dren, visit The National Center for Missing & Ex-ploited Children at http://www.kidsmartz.org/CommonTricks.

Spend the Jubilee of Mercy Year with the

Traveling Holy Family! Pope Francis said the infant Jesus with his mother Mary and with St. Joseph are a shining example of mercy and salvation for the entire world (Vatican Radio, 2014). What better way to start off the new year than with the Holy Family in prayer, reflection and companionship? Send an email to [email protected] to reserve time with the Holy Family statues. You can request a statue to reside with your family for a period of 1-4 weeks. The statues can be picked up by the receiving family during a short but faith-filled blessing by the Presider during Sunday Mass with advance notice, or the statues can be dropped off and picked up from the Rectory.

We are called to keep growing in the faith!

The Religious Education Congress can foster that growth! The theme for the Religious Education Con-gress 2016 – "Boundless Mercy" – takes its inspira-tion from the Gospel story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well and from the Jubilee Year of Mercy convoked by Pope Francis. The weekend of February 26-28th (plus Youth Day on the 25th) is full of nationally-known speakers, music, liturgy, and exhibitors from all over the world. Register on-line or request hardcopy registration books at: http://www.recongress.org

Did you miss last year’s OneLife LA? You won’t want to miss it this year! On January 23, 2016, join Archbishop Gomez and tens of thousands in downtown Los Angeles for the

second annual OneLife LA, an event celebrating the beauty and dignity of every human life from conception to natu-ral death.

Beginning at 12:00 at La Pla-cita/Olvera St., we will walk to

Grand Park for a family-friendly day of inspir-ing speakers, live music, entertainment, food trucks, and exhibits from community organi-zations serving those in need. The Requiem Mass for the Unborn at the Cathedral will fol-low at 5pm.

Ministry in Community…

Kids Living Faith: Sunday, January 3rd, 2016 The Epiphany of the Lord

Then Herod called the magi secretly… “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found Him, bring me word, that I too may go and do Him homage.” - Matthew 2:7-8

Sneaky old Herod calls the wise men secretly and tells them he wants to worship the newborn king too. But we know he has other plans. Fortunately, after the wise men bring their gifts to baby Jesus, they’re warned in a dream not to return to Herod, and they take a detour. We have to be wise too. We stay away from people who want to steer us in the wrong direction. We watch out for “secrets,” especially ones that might hurt someone. We stick with friends who are good and kind.

Lord God, make me wise like the magi who visited your Son Jesus.

FACT OF LIFE Sir Winston Churchill on the Sanctity of Human Life

In the new book God & Churchill: How the Great Leader’s Sense of Destiny Changed His Troubled World and Offers Hope for Ours by Jonathan Sandys (great-grandson of Sir Winston Churchill) and Wallace Henley delves into a lesser explored aspect of Churchill’s life: his Christian faith. Throughout the book we see clear insight as to what made Churchill an upright wartime leader. In sharp contrast to Adolf Hitler, Churchill was undergirded with humility in his appreciation for the dignity of all human life, even the lives of those behind enemy lines. Churchill included the unborn in his concern. Churchill’s heart ached for many years. During his 1949 trip to the United States, someone told him about a monument to the Hiroshima victims at Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the atomic bomb had been tested. Churchill wondered aloud if this meant the Americans “had a bad conscience because the atom bomb was dropped.” Randolph, Churchill’s son, remarked that saturation bombing during the Second World War was “an equal horror.” Churchill’s eyes filled with tears as he talked about the bombing of Germany’s cities. “Tens of thousands of lives were extinguished in one night,” he said. “Old men, old women, little children—yes, yes, little children about to be born.”
