Sunday News Canada Weekend Edition

VIBRANT INCLUSIVE PROGRESSIVE

After a quarter century of opening Pride Sunday in Toronto, Rev. Dr. Brent Hawkes, C.M., preached his final Pride service last weekend.

Thousands joined us in person or watched online. Once again, MCC Toronto demonstrated how we build bridges that transform the world as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Mayor John Tory joined Pride Executive Director Olivia Nuamah and Toronto Police Superintendent Barbara McLean in the congregation.

Brent’s Lesson for Life was, by many accounts, one of the best

sermons of his career. Widely quoted by media across the country, Brent reminded us that inclusion is the core value of our community:

“I wear a uniform that represents a group that has done the most damage to the LGBTQ+ community—the Christian church. So don’t ban what’s offensive to some, reform it to the benefit of everyone.”

As Brent concluded his final Pride sermon, tears from Heaven mixed with the tears on our faces. The service had to end early due to rain.

We love you Brent - MCC Toronto

Micah 6: 6-8 With what shall I come before God, and bow myself before the most high? Shall I come with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will God be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” God has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does God require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

First Reading

Matthew 25: 34-36 “Come, you that are blessed by God, inherit the dominion prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Second Reading

For Your Smiling Spirit

Silence is Golden... The church that I attend had a fundraising dinner with members of the church and community. Before the opening speech, the pastor gave the following announcement, “We kindly ask if you can please put all cell phones and children on vibrate.”

It takes many volunteers for our Pride activities: a booth at the street fair, our worship service, and our parade contingent.

Thank you everyone!

Join us for a whole week of rockin’ events with our Senior Pastor candidate, Rev. Jeff Rock! Visit our website for the full itinerary and RSVP for the events that you can attend. Next Sunday, July 9, there will be a special meeting to vote for our Senior Pastor at 1:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. All voting members are invited to attend this historic election.

Your vote is so important. After many months of planning, asking questions, considering your feedback, inviting applications and carefully interviewing a diverse range of candidates, this is your opportunity to confirm the unanimous recommendation of the Senior Pastor Search committee and Board of Directors. Did we choose the right candidate? Will he guide our future? This is your opportunity to decide Yes or No.

Most importantly, this vote is how our community will affirm the next Senior Pastor and give that person the support they need to deliver our unifying message of love to the world around us, while reflecting that same love back to us. It’s up to you. www.mcctoronto.com/upon-this-rock

With today’s technology, the Board will allow Voting Members who are able to watch the webcast of the meeting to vote online. Contact us at [email protected]. We’d like to hear from you by July 6.
