Kristen M. Jacobs, M.D., is the Medical Director of Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness. As a business owner and busy mom of two boys, she strives to practice what she preaches and aims to fight aging every step of the way. There is no need to “live with” your lines, sun spots or other skin concerns for that matter. Many women say they are “proud of their lines and wrinkles” and that is OK. We even hear Moms refer to lines on their forehead and around the eyes as “Mom lines.”

The exciting news is there are plenty of options for those of us who want to maintain a youthful appear-ance and get rid of “Mom lines.” There are a variety of procedures that can transform your face and skin, otherwise known as Total Facial Rejuvenation.

The best part of Facial Rejuvenation in 2014 is that there is less emphasis on surgical procedures and more emphasis on non-invasive procedures. In the past, patients waited until it was absolutely neces-sary “to go under the knife”; however, now we can treat issues as they arise with in-office procedures that require very little, if any, downtime.

“When a patient comes to visit me, I look at them as a whole. I will map out a treatment plan of available

options to give him or her the best possible result.” Dr. Jacobs is a Botox and Juvederm Trainer, and known for her natural, comprehensive approach to skin care. “Don’t be surprised if I talk to you about nutrition, skin care AND procedures. The choice is ultimately yours, but it’s my job to educate you and tell you what is available.”

Gift Cards Available for Mother’s Day! Call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness at (618) 288-9117 to schedule a Complimentary Skin Consultation. Visit our website at OohLaLa-Wellness.com. Our 12,000-foot Spa & Wellness Clinic is located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon.

A New Outlook On Total Facial RejuvenationSubmitted by Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness

Here is a way to think of Total Facial Rejuvenation: S.C.I.N.S – Skin Care. A good skin care regimen is essential to build healthy skin that will better support any procedures you choose. In fact, depending on the concern, patients can achieve their goal with skin care alone. C – Collagen Stimulation. As we age, we lose col-lagen, volume and elasticity. However, we can stimulate collage by using Growth Factors, like those found in Skin-Medica’s TNS Essential Serum and TNS Recovery Complex. Treatments like Ultherapy, Microcurrent, Chemical Peels and Facials also aim to stimulate collagen production. I – Injectables, such as Botox and Fillers. Botox is one of the most popular anti-aging treatments. Chances are your neighbor, or even your best friend, is getting Botox – Fillers, too - and you don’t even know it! Dr. Jacobs actually uses Fillers, like Juvederm, to create a mini facelift. By injecting into the cheek area, it creates a lifting effect that reduces jowls and folds around the mouth. Patients can look years younger with just a few syringes of a Dermal Filler. N – Nutrition. This goes hand-in-hand with your skin care regimen and treatments. Certain skin conditions can be remedied by a change in diet, adding supplements or simply drinking more water! Dr. Robert Wise, Dr. Jacobs’ husband, specializes in Nutritional Counseling and Weight Loss. He can help with cravings, fatigue and proper nutrition."I love my career, but nothing compares to

being a Mother!"

Elite Retreat Offers Spa Packages To Make Mother’s Day Fabulous

There are not many other thoughtful gifts than the gift of relaxation and Elite Retreat Day Spa and Salon has a wide selection of services from which to choose. The best values are the lovely spa packages with an array of services:

Elite’s Ultimate Spa Day lasts six hours and offers a serene atmosphere with rejuvenating spa treatments. This mini-vacation includes: Fresh

flowers upon arrival, Spa Facial, Swedish Massage, Spa Pedicure, Classic Manicure, Hair Styling and Make up Application and light lunch.

The Miracle Morning treatment is three hours and offers a relaxing Spa Facial, one hour Swedish Massage and a Spa Manicure. Or how about the Pampering Package? For

three hours, Mom can enjoy her choice of one Spa Facial followed by a One Hour Deep Tissue Massage and Spa Pedicure.

There is also the Special Event Package, the Spa Sampler and the Elite Trio all of which would make excellent gifts. Making it convenient, gift cards can be purchased in the spa, of course, but also online. Gift cards can be

emailed or printed to wrap up for Mother’s Day.

Celebrating 10 years at 400 Carlyle Avenue and 22 years in total, Elite Retreat Day Spa and Salon is located in a charming home that was renovated to provide separate spaces for the client’s privacy and relaxation. Open seven days a week, the spa now

offers eight hair stylists, five massage therapists and three aestheticians.

Owner Billie Jo Edwards said she believes her success is because of the staff’s unwavering commitment to excellent customer care and the addition of new services as often as possible. Of course, office manager Carrie Kelly keeps things in order. “I don’t know what I’d do

without Carrie,” Edwards said. “She is the backbone of this place!”

The Elite Retreat Day Spa and Salon is at 400 Carlyle Avenue and can be reached at (618) 233-8084; www.eliteretreatdayspa.org.

With more implant choices, how do you decide what’s right for you?

In 2013, breast augmentation was the number one cosmetic surgical procedure. There were over 290,000 breast augmentations in the United States in 2013 alone! Breast augmentation is typically completed by use of a breast implant. At this point, there are three major types of breast implants avail-

able, and we are frequently asked, "Which implant is best?”

Throughout the history of breast augmentation there have been many materials used for implants including ivory, glass balls, ground rubber, paraffin wax, and much more. Currently in the United States three types remain: saline, silicone, and highly cohesive "gummy bear" silicone gel (FDA approved February 2013).

The saline implants have the distinct advantage in the event of implant rupture. These implants are filled with normal saline, which is the solution given to patients through IVs while in the hospital. Normal saline is the solution that our body is composed of and is completely safe if absorbed. If a saline implant ruptures, it simply flattens, and the body absorbs all of the saline. If you exchange the implant in a reasonable amount of time, it is a relatively quick procedure with minimal discomfort and cost. The negative aspects of saline implant relate to their feel and slight risk of rippling. Saline implants do not feel as natural as a silicone implant. Also, saline implants have a higher risk of rippling than the other implant choices. This rippling can be visible in the lower, outer portion of the breast.

Silicone implants have the distinct advantage of a more natural feel with slightly less risk of rippling. The disadvantage is in the event of an implant rupture or leak. If the silicone implant were to leak, you may not be aware because the silicone isn’t reabsorbed by the body but instead stays in the capsule around the implant. This is frequently inconsequential; however, we recommend exchange of an im-plant that has leaked. Over time, a leaking silicone implant can proceed to firmness, irregular-shape, and even discomfort. This mandates removal and exchange.

In February of 2013, the highly cohesive "gummy bear "implant was released in America after 10 years of clinical trial. This is truly a silicone implant, but it is more cohesive. If this type of implant is cut in half the silicone gel stays in place. This gel material is similar to the consistency of a candied gummy bear, hence the nickname "Gummy Bear” implant. It has a natural feel with the lowest risk of rippling. It also has the most natural “teardrop” shape providing some upper breast fullness, although not as much as saline or silicone.

Overall, each implant has distinct advantages and disadvantages. It is important to consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon prior to making any type of breast augmentation decision and to learn all of the advantages and disadvantages of these implants to see which option is best for you.

Happy Mother’s Day!

“With these simple, gentle laser treatments, you can help prevent the visible signs of aging and the overall dulling effects of time that the environment can have on your skin,” said Denise Drake, owner of Facial Rejuvenation Center Medical Center. “One 20- to 30-minute session can leave your skin feeling smoother, younger and give you a ‘radiant glow’ that comes from healthy, youthful skin.”

Routine treatments deliver lasting results to keep you looking younger for years to come. "While it may vary for each patient, we recommend a series of five treatments over the course of 10 weeks," said Drake.

The Non-Invasive Fraxel Laser Treatment is based on advanced technology, but receiving treatments is simple. First, you will want to have a consultation with your licensed skin care professional to be sure this treatment is right for you and to pinpoint some of the key trouble spots it can help address. From there, your provider can recommend a treatment regimen that's perfect for you.

This break-through laser treatment is for all ages, skin types and is for women and men. Here are a few results you can expect:• Treats acne and reverse sun damage• Treats fine lines and wrinkles• Removes pigmentation• Visibly improves tone, texture and radiance• Reduces size of pores• Treats Melasma• Stimulates collagen development

Non-invasive Fraxel Laser Treatments are designed to deliver powerfully precise laser energy that penetrates to the dermal layer, which stimulates collagen. Not only effective, but the Fraxel Laser also delivers unparalleled patient comfort and safety. This treatment is a non-ablative procedure resulting in no social downtime whatsoever.

The Facial Rejuvenation Center Medical Spa is located Downtown Belleville at 3 N. High Street; (618) 234-0900; www.thefacialrejuvenationcenter.com.

If you are battling the effects aging can have on your skin, or trying to address it before the battle even begins, the Non-Invasive Fraxel Laser Treatment offered at the Facial Rejuvenation Center Medical Spa in downtown Belleville might just be the answer.

I WAS NOT BUILT TO BREAK (iwasnotbuilttobrake.org) is a MOVEMENT, begun by the Karla Smith Foundation, for women to break the silence around mental illness.

As women, we often put our own needs behind family commitments, caring for our children, work, and social obligations. We don’t take the time to admit that maybe we’ve reached our own “breaking points,” that we need help, that we need to regain our own balance.

By acknowledging that our mental health matters, we will not lose the spirit of “warrior” that we’ve fought so hard to gain in our lives and workplaces. We deserve to be reminded that: It’s okay to admit sadness, even the kind that makes it hard to get out of bed or admit that we’re afraid and overwhelmed.

We all know that mental health is still a “taboo” subject in our country. We fear that if we admit depression or anxiety, we will be judged as weak or incapable.

But if we do not talk about it, and if we don’t individually become proactive about it, we will never move forward. To put that in perspective – think about how many women’s lives have been saved because it is now okay to say the words “breast cancer” out loud and not only talk about it, but walk hand in hand with thousands of others in support of our breast health.

Now think about this – over 12 million women in the US will experience clinical depression this year. But we are ALL afraid to talk about it.

Our mental health is just as important as our breast health.

We aren’t afraid to talk about our physical health…let’s not be afraid to acknowledge our mental health too. The health of future women depends upon it. Let’s leave our daughters a legacy that empowers them. Let’s begin that legacy now. Let’s begin by open discussions, by riding together to eliminate stigma, by showing the world that we are in fact powerful women, NOT BUILT TO BRAKE. We are unstoppable.

Join us on June 1st for the Women’s Day Ride. Sign up on line at karlasmithfoundation.org and learn more about us and our movement on facebook. And if you need help call us at 618.234.7312.

I was not built to brake. My mental health is just as important as my breast health.

Thomas K. Unger, O.D. • Alice E. Unger, O.D.534 Edwardsville Rd., Troy, IL • (618) 667-2020www.readingandvision.com

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS!1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of

undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child...• Dislike reading?• Skip or reread lines?• Prefer to be read to?• Lose place when reading?• Have trouble remembering what has been read?• Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?• Make numbers/letter reversals?• Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Are you concerned about whether or not your child will be left behind? Are ou worried he or she might need to attend Summer school?

All too often a child is left back with the hope that the second time through a light bulb will suddenly go off. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Following is an important message for parents.

When a child is struggling with schoolwork - de-spite all best attempts to help - there is a strong possibility that your child may be struggling with a vision problem. Before you say, “Not my child, he has perfect vision,” please keep reading.

As soon as parents and educators hear that a child can see 20/20, they assume the child has “perfect vision,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. All it means is your child can see the size of letters that are supposed to be seen from a distance of 20 feet. This is only ONE of over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning.

According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy , “If a child is missing even one of these visual skills, reading and learning can become difficult. If a child is missing more, reading can be nearly impossible.”

If your child struggles with reading, you need to know the symptoms of a vision problem because children rarely tell their parents they are having trouble seeing. Here are some of the more common symptoms. Does your child:

• Get frustrated when trying to read or do homework?

• Take much longer doing his/her home-work than it should?

• Have a “tracking” problem?• Have trouble making out words?• “Forget” to bring homework assign-

ments home?• Find it harder to read at the end of the

day than in the morning?

• Skip words or repeat lines when reading out loud to you?

• Reverse letters like b's into d's when reading?

• Have a short attention span?

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a fully correctable vision problem. Please don’t assume your child is not at risk be-cause the results of the last vision screening came through OK. To be sure your child has all the visual skills required for reading and learning, schedule a developmental vision evaluation (this is different than a regular eye exam and is typically performed by a Developmental Optometrist).

If a vision problem is at the root of your child’s dif-ficulties, there is hope that there will be a positive end to all the struggling. Schedule a developmental vision evaluation for your child today. Taking action today could make next school year much easier for everyone.

For a more in-depth symptom checklist or more information about the critical link be-tween vision and learning, please visit www.ungereyecare.com, or call (618) 667-2020.

Since 1991, Dream Play Recreation has offered a colorful myriad of the highest quality playground and recreational equipment on the market. In 2011, Dream Play expanded their offerings by adding Woodplay - “The Original Redwood Playset Company” - Childlife Playsets, Goalrilla basketball goals and Sports

Trainers to a line up that already included Goalsetter Basketball Sys-tems and the revolutionary Springfree Trampoline.

“Safety is a huge parental concern and the playsets and trampolines we of-fer are the safest in the country,” said Tim Albers, owner. “Plus, our in-house installers take all the safety param-eters into account to ensure a safe play environment once the equipment is installed. Dream Play will make sure the job is done right.”

The premium brand of playsets that Dream Play carries is Woodplay because it offers only the best in quality,

safety, value and expandability. “Woodplay is constructed of Heart Redwood, which is naturally resistant to insects and decay, making it the best choice for any outdoor playset. All the edges of the wood are routed, rounded, sanded smooth and pre-stained from the factory. In addition, using only true construction size beams, all the major joints are through-bolted, some using triple joint construction, and secured with hot dipped galvanized hardware,” Albers said. “No other playset company makes their products this way. Redwood also takes stain well so it’s not as maintenance intense as other lumber. In addition, we also offer Childlife Playsets, a division of Woodplay.

The Childlife lineup has lower price points and is an incredible value that does not compromise safety being constructed of 4”-by-4” and 4”-by-6” beams throughout.”

When it comes to basketball goals, “Goalsetter is the best built goal you can buy. They are 100 percent American made with a lifetime warranty, and adjust-able from 6-foot to 10-foot. “We have carried Goalsetter for 18 years and in my opinion they have no equal. We also now carry Goalrilla basketball goals. They have really upped their game in the market with their ‘Clear View’ line-up of goals made to mimic the look of basketball goals you see in college and profes-sional arenas, and also come with a lifetime warranty.”

And for fun plus fantastic health benefits, Springfree Trampolines are the safest trampoline in the world. “Springfree is the only trampoline I will carry. Simply put, they have engineered 83 percent of all injuries that occur on trampolines out of the product. There are no springs or metal frame to fall on and you can’t fall out,” he said. Springfree uses flexible glass infused rods for its bounce. The rods lie beneath the jumping surface out of harms way. Traditional trampolines have springs that give it the bounce, and despite safety pads, can still injure. “The health benefits of trampolines have long been known: 10 minutes on a trampoline is equal to 30 minutes of jogging. Astronauts train on trampolines. With Springfree you can have all the benefits without the negatives.”

Dream Play Recreation invites all customers to experience their 12,000-square-foot showroom – one of the largest in the country – filled with 18 playsets, nine basketball goals in a court area, three trampolines and four sorts trainers on display ready for your test play.

Dream Play Recreation is located at 17373 Edison Avenue in Chester-field; (636) 530-0055 or (800) 962-0055; DreamPlayRec.com.

The Finishing TouchThe Finishing Touch

Marketplace Magazine | Spring Issue 2014 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 33

Celebrating 35 years, The Finishing Touch in Edwardsville invites anyone interested in home and office interiors to visit their lovely seven-room Victorian boutique located in the heart of the shopping district.

Filled to the brim with home interior accessories, fine furniture, floor coverings, custom draperies and upholstered furniture, the shop is a treat for the eyes. The second floor features hundreds of catalogs and samples from their quality manufacturers.

Owners Carrie Babington and Bette McCallon – together in business all these 35 years – want customers to know that they realize decorating one’s home is very personal. How-ever, many people often don’t know where to start or have the time to decorate or redecorate on their own.

“We are here to help our clients solve any decorating is-sues and we take pride in creating personalized schemes that reflect each individual’s tastes,” said Babington. “After 35 years we feel like we can offer these five elements: experience, knowledge, resources, longevity and customer satisfaction. From start to finish, there’s really not much we can’t do.”

The two friends, who are licensed interior designers, established The Finishing Touch in Litchfield in 1979. They moved their firm to Edwardsville in 1987 at which time designer Mary Droste joined the business. Ten years later they settled into their current location at 415 Vandalia Street.

“We’ve been in business long enough to see trends come in, go out and come in again!” she laughed. “And I can’t say enough nice things about the community of Edwardsville: We have enjoyed being here!” Babington is a member and officer of the Rotary Club of Edwardsville as well as a chamber member.

Too often, potential customers have the perception that a design firm is costly, but in reality that’s just not the case. Many long-time clients start out with a consultation and

then take it to the next level – and then come back years later when it’s time to redecorate.

Starting from the ground up is also a specialty: “We love to start with the blueprints before breaking ground on a new home. This way we can help them figure out if their furnish-ings, draperies, etc., will fit properly: ‘Are the rooms large enough? Are the windows and doors in the right spots?’ We can save a lot of time and disappointment,” Babington said.

The Finishing Touch also enjoys having many commercial customers in the area such as doctor’s offices, auto body shops, law offices, warehouses and much more. Their

design will reflect the client’s taste whether is it traditional, contemporary, trendy or otherwise.

The Finishing Touch is located at 415 Vandalia in Edwardsville; (68) 692-1574; www.finishingtouchdecorating.com.

As the Midwest’s premiere area rug repair, restoration and cleaning company, Robin’s Rug Repair is a new division of Carpet Care Plus that provides the solutions you need to maintain the life, quality, and value of your area rugs. No matter the origin of creation,

Robin’s Rug Repair has the resources and tools to take care of your rug repair need.

Robin McQueen, a rug repair and restoration specialist with beginning and advanced training, treats every rug need with special care. Along with her nation-wide affiliation of rug repair and restoration experts, she “thoroughly enjoys the individual and unique challenges each rug brings.”

Additionally, Robin’s Rug Repair provides Rug Cleaning Services, to make sure the quality and value of each rug touched maintains its integrity and beauty. With two certified master rug cleaners on staff, customers are assured someone with expertise will handle their rug.

“It’s interesting that 50% of the rugs we take care of are damaged,” McQueen said. “If you don’t repair these, especially on the sides and ends, it will just deteriorate.”

There are three different approaches to Robin’s Rug Repair services: actual rug repair, restoration and conservation. Rug repair is the compromise between conservation and restoration and is the most appropriate for rugs sent in for cleaning. Repairs include patching, reduction in size, new fringe and spot dyeing.

Area rug restoration is defined as returning a rug to a condition as close as possible to its original condition. Ideally, this requires matching dyes, fibers and structure as closely as possible to the original. This level of work is done when the value and rarity of the rug justifies the expense for the restoration.

The conservation of an area rug is the art of preserving it from further deterioration with as little change to its current condition as possible. Rugs that are conserved usually are rare and have exceptional scientific, historical and artistic value.

McQueen and her husband, Larry, both owners of Carpet Care Plus, advise having an appraisal to determine the value of the rug, which also provides the client a written certificate that includes type of rug, age and value. This documentation can be used to replace its value if you were to lose this piece of art to a fire, theft or any other loss. An appraisal also gives them the opportunity to identify where “in the world” the rug is from originally.

“Every rug tells you a story: Where it was made, how it was made and what it is made from. Having this knowledge helps in identifying the proper repair and eventually cleaning procedures needed to care for that particular rug,” said McQueen.

“Area rugs are essentially floor art, that when properly cared for and maintained will retain their value and over time can increase in value,” she said. “Knowing the origin and make of a rug is not in the repertoire of most carpet cleaners, which can lead to damage. In addition, rugs shouldn’t be cleaned in a home.”

Having working relationships with rug specialists all over the world, Robin's Rug Repair is able to obtain the appropriate materials needed for repairing all types of rugs. “There are plants owned by people from all over the U.S., many are over 100 years old – we meet about twice a year to share our experiences and expand our expertise,” McQueen said.

Another large part of the business is the Binding and Serging of carpeting remnants.“We can alter any size or shape of rug for your specific needs. We’ve done this for homes, offices and even RVs. For example, if that 8-foot-by-10-foot you purchased is just a tad too big, or even if you want it to become a circle, we can bring it down to the exact size or shape needed. We also provide non-stick backing and padding for your rugs.”

Robin’s Rug Repair is in the Carpet Care Plus location at 121 Behrens Dr., Suite 1. Call (618) 632-0883 to schedule an appointment or for a free estimate; www.robinsrugrepair.com. Rug pick-up and delivery is available.

After growing up with the fun of having a pool in the back yard and then spending wasted time going back and forth to the community pool with his own family in tow, Dean Lyon and his wife, Jamie, knew

it was time to add a pool to their home in Columbia.

“For us, it really was the convenience factor of having a pool right here in our own back yard. It’s great entertainment for our family and for our friends – in fact, our friends have a tendency to come over and never leave,” Dean Lyon said, and laughed.

Some people may shy away from owning a pool because of the maintenance aspect, but for the Lyons it’s a piece of cake. “With the automatic vacuums these days it’s almost zero maintenance,” he said. “I am really surprised at how easy it is actually. Growing up, our in ground pool was a lot of manual work – but they aren’t like that anymore.”

Knowing the quality of service that Tom and Kevin Heintz of Swimmer’s Delight provide their customers, Lyon knew right away who to call. “Tom built my house and did such a great job, I wouldn’t have called anyone else.”

They started the process by working together and utilizing Swimmer’s Delight 3-D computer program to help visualize the entire project. “I had ideas of what I wanted – really I thought I was going to have to buy a con-crete pool – but Kevin created a custom liner to fit our needs perfectly.”

The end result is a rectangular-shape style with a 10-foot-by-15-foot swim-out area, diving board and a ledge along the back of the pool – “It’s

a great design for the kids to play while the adults relax along the ledges and in the swim-out area,” he said.

Amazingly, the pool was built from start to finish in just two to three weeks. “Kevin was always there down in the ‘ditch’ working alongside the crew and Tom was always quick with communication – I was quite im-pressed,” Lyon said. “When it was finished, they came back to tweak every-thing and to teach us how to use the technology from our iPad.”

For additional pool use through the year, the Lyons chose to put a heater on their pool. “At the end of September last year, our 4-year-old had a swim party for her birth-day! They had a blast!” he said. “And we are opening it up right now for the summer. Even when it’s not warm enough to swim, though, it’s still a nice view while sitting outside around a fire.”

Swimmer’s Delight not only builds the pool, they have a full service department to help with repairs and maintenance throughout the year, as well as closings and openings. Tired of your old pool? Give them a call for a little update or complete renovation.

“We were 100% completely satisfied with Kevin and Tom’s work,” Lyon said, “I would recommend them to anyone. In fact, if we ever move I will have them build my next one!”

Call Kevin Heintz at (618) 824-6276 or Tom Heintz at (618) 939-5151 to schedule an appointment and visit www.swimmersde-light.net for more information.

Daily headlines warn about the dangers of mosquitoes even after an unusually cold winter and spring. Yes, mosquitoes are not merely annoying; they are also

blood-sucking transmitters of deadly disease. In fact, many scholars theorize that the mosquito is responsible for more human deaths throughout history than any other organism.

Armed and at the ready to protect you and your family is Mosquito Squad serving Madison, St. Clair and Monroe coun-ties. “The breeding cycle begins when the temperature is a constant 60 degrees and above,” said Gary Alves, co-owner of Mosquito Squad along with his son, Ben. “The ‘usual’ time frame for spraying is May through October.”

It was through personal experience that the father and son duo decided Mosquito Squad would be an excellent venture for the two of them. “My son has a wooded back yard at his South County home and gave Mosquito Squad a try. He thought the treatments worked so great that we should look into investing into the franchise in the Metro East where I live,” Alves said. They treat residential and commercial properties for mosquitoes as well as ticks and fleas.

“What sets Mosquito Squad apart from other treatments is that it specifically focuses on mosquitoes,” he said. “The company has done extensive research on mosquitoes and has developed the chemicals necessary to reduce the insect’s population by 85 to 90%. We know how they breed and precisely where to apply the spray.”

Mosquito Squad has a number of different types of treatment from the traditional barrier spray which is effective up to 21 days, a platinum spray every two weeks, misting systems that spray three to four times a day, and a special event one-time spray. They also offer an all-natural spray.

“Realistically we can’t eliminate 100% of mosquitoes, but we do have one of the most effective treatments in the area which has been proven across the country,” Alves said. “In fact, we are one of the fastest growing franchises because of the product’s effectiveness.”

“It all started in 1975 when I got a job for a small asphalt paving company,” said Kirk Sonnenberg, founder and owner of Sonnenberg Paving and Landscape Materials Co. and Sonnenberg Asphalt Co. “They sealed driveways and I learned the business hands-on for about seven years. Then, in 1982, I started sealing driveways on my own. Word of mouth spread and within a few years, I had a lot of steady business. Going into the asphalt paving business was the next logical step.” Thus, Sonnenberg bought a small paving box and offered that service as well.

“Several years later, I had this long conversation with a friend of mine in the asphalt business who thought that selling bulk landscape materials would be a good fit for us since landscaping, asphalt, paving and sealing are all seasonal,” he said. “So, in 1991, in addition to our sealing and paving operations, we started selling bulk rock and mulch from our current Belleville location. Sales were good and later we added pavers, retaining wall blocks and stone. Family members, in-cluding my dad, helped with the day-to-day operations and, in 2007, we opened a second store in Columbia. We expanded our Belleville location in 2010.”

Today, Sonnenberg’s is the area’s premier supplier of landscaping materials and supplies. Both the Belleville and Columbia locations have beautiful and spacious

showrooms, inspiring displays, knowledgeable staff and large inventories of items that are sure to meet every need.

“We offer one-stop shopping,” Sonnenberg said. “When you come in to the store, you can get stone, rock, sod, mulch, designer landscape lights, pond kits and supplies, fireplaces, drive-way sealer, asphalt patching materials, landscape design services or Big Green Egg grills. We try to offer everything for hardscape landscaping so our customers don’t waste time running around to many different stores.”

If you need a landscape makeover, whether you do-it-yourself or have it profes-sionally designed and installed: Sonnenberg’s is the place to go. They offer craftsmen-quality landscaping services, truck loads of landscaping products, “same-day” delivery, and take all major charge cards.

Stop by the Belleville location at 1460 Frank Scott Parkway West, (618) 398-0838; or the Columbia store at 8526 Hanover Industrial Drive, (618) 939-2121; www.sonnenberglandscaping.com.

For the past 20 years, the metropolitan area has seen a steady increase in the low maintenance materials for your home and yard. Before then, there was little choice but wood for fencing, decking and railings, and homeowners found themselves

repairing, re-staining, repainting, and eventually replacing their wood materials. Designed to last a lifetime rather than a season, vinyl and aluminum products are made to enhance the home's curb appeal while providing a practical choice for safety, pri-vacy and practicality.

Wood is beautiful for sure, but as soon as it’s installed it begins to deteriorate – that’s an inevitable fact. And today, with most old-growth lumber long since cut down, the life span of wood isn’t even as good as it used to be.

The benefits of vinyl are numerous starting with superior construction material. At Westech, an American company (Indiana), the company believes that you only get what you put in. That is why they start by demanding only the highest quality vinyl resin. Then they add the titanium dioxide (pre-vents yellowing and cracking) and impact resisters (helps to prevent breakage) and other high quality ingredients for “weatherability.” Vinyl is available in several colors other than white, such as almond and clay.

Aluminum railing and fencing are also low maintenance materials. Radiance aluminum fence is an American made product that is produced in Michigan. It carries

a lifetime warranty just like the vinyl and is composed of a .090 sculpted horizontal rail that prevents the rails from sagging over time. This rail is twice the thickness of the average rail which translates into twice the strength. Radiance aluminum fence is available in black, bronze and white.

Aluminum porch and deck railing is becoming more popular for people who are looking for the darker colors and a product that is not as massive as vinyl. The Westbury aluminum railing is also made in Indiana and is one of the highest quality rails on the market. This rail can be mounted to concrete, attached to a deck, installed into the ground, or core drilled into concrete. It comes in 11 different colors, and has a lifetime warranty.

Perhaps the best feature of all these products is that they are virtually main-tenance free. There’s no need to scrape, paint or stain a vinyl or aluminum fence or rail. As with most exterior products, they will become dirty when exposed to the

elements. Pressure washing with a mild detergent and water should keep the products looking new. For stubborn stains, use a non-abrasive cleanser and a soft-bristled brush.

For more information on these products, you may visit the extensive showroom at Trost Plastics just off Route 3 at 8610 Hanover Industrial Drive, Columbia; or call (800) 355-4060. You can also check them out at www.trostplastics.com.
