HAPPYHAPPY WIFE

LIFE

CHED & HEATHERMember Since 2000

JERRY & JOMember Since 2005

If you haven’t noticed by now, the Men of Spengler have been showing up all over the metro-east in calendars, billboards, TV and mailboxes. Not to mention happy homeowner’s doorsteps as they work to provide plumbing, cooling and heating solutions in times of crisis.

Now the wives of the Men of Spengler are getting their turn to shine with the launch of Spengler’s Happy Wife – Happy Life Club.

“The one thing I have learned after replacing air conditioners all day is that a Happy Wife equals a Happy Life,” said Jerry Becker, an Indoor Comfort Solution Specialist at Spengler. “So I knew with the summer heating up, it was time to replace our old air conditioner with a new Spengler Complete Home Cooling System to keep my wife and kids cool this summer.”

And Jerry isn’t the only Spengler team member who thought the same way.

Ched Stirling, a Plumbing Solution Specialist said, “My wife, Heather has been wanting a tankless hot water heater for awhile now. With two daughters in the house, our standard water heater just didn’t keep up. So after hearing how well my clients loved their hot water heaters, I decided to make sure my wife stayed “forever hot” in her tub.”

Anyone can join the Happy Wife – Happy Life Club at Spengler’s website, www.spenglerco.com. For a limited time this summer, when you join, you can register for a chance to win a free Spengler Home

And that is what the new club is all about – keeping families happy.

“It’s like the old saying goes – if mom’s not happy, nobody’s happy,” said Heather Stirling, wife of 13 years to plumber, Ched Stirling.

“I am so proud of my husband, who works long hours fixing problems for families and especially moms. So when I heard about the new club to honor wives and moms, I was one of the first to sign up.”

For every $50 coupon redeemed, Spengler will be donating $5 to the Everyday Hero Fund, launched earlier this year to support local fire departments.

To receive a free $50 coupon and the opportunity to help a local fire department, plus register to win a new cooling system, tankless water heater or a weekend getaway to New York, log onto spenglerco.com. For details call 618.623.0572.

Cooling System, a free Tankless Hot Water Heater or a Weekend Shopping Getaway to New York City. Everyone who joins also gets a $50 coupon to use on any Spengler Service.

The exclusive Spengler Complete Home Cooling System features the new smart phone thermostat so you can change the temperature in your home from anywhere. It has a patented new air filtration and cleaning system to eliminate dust and aller-gens from the indoor air. Not to mention save you money with the Energy Star Efficiency rating.

The savings don’t stop with the cooling system, the Tankless Water Heater automatically responds to your use of showers, baths, faucets, washing ma-chines and dishwashers and heat “on demand” only the amount of hot water you actually need. You no longer have to waste energy heating water you don’t use, which saves on your monthly utility bills.

With all the extra savings, you can have the extras in life for your family. That is why the Happy Wife – Happy Life Club is kicking off by giving away a trip to New York, where your wife can Shop Like a Housewife, inspired by the Real Housewives Series on the Bravo Network.

“We are in the business of helping husbands and wives get the most out of their home’s plumbing, heating and cooling systems,” said Jason Spengler, President of the 42 year-old company. “We work everyday to educate and offer options that fit both spouses while benefiting the entire family.” register @ www.spenglerco.com

Founded In The Metro east, The NCCS Provides Assistance To All Children With Cancer Across The Country

Founded in 1986 by Wood River native Mark Stolze, The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) has provided more than $54 million in direct financial assistance to more than 34,000 children nationwide. The NCCS serves as a financial, emotional and educational resource for families that can’t make ends meet when their child is diagnosed with cancer, is currently in treatment or completed treatment years ago.

Why the organization was founded is a story of a tenacious person who didn’t accept what was happening and decided to change it for the better. At the time, Stolze’s wife, Carol Stolze, was the administrative director of the American Red Cross in St. Louis. “She called one night close to Christmas and asked me to meet her at Barnes-Jewish Hospital to visit a very sick friend,” he recalled.

At Barnes-Jewish Hospital, they found their friend Sherry in her hospital bed – bald from chemo, chewing on ice – enduring the then-experimental procedure of a bone marrow transplant to fight Stage IV Hodgkins Disease. At the time, a bone marrow transplant was not covered by insurance even though it was some patients’ only chance for survival.

With tears streaming down her face, “Sherry said, ‘whether I live or die my family will always be in debt’ because of the cost of her treatment. I thought, ‘there’s got to be some organization that can help, but there wasn’t.”

Consequently, Stolze asked Sherry if he could speak to her doctor who was head of the bone marrow transplant unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. “The doctor said her situation was not uncommon at all and a bone marrow transplant, although life-saving, was not possible for many including children. “They had turned down children whose parents could not afford the transplant and often the outcome was grim.”

One thing led to another, Stolze said, and he and his wife started the NCCS utilizing Carol Stolze’s vast non-profit and fund-raising

experience. “We are now celebrating the 25th anniversary of our organization,” he said. And even happier, “Sherry made it and she is here with us today.”

In just a few years after its inception, the NCCS expanded its services to offer a wide range of program services, and has become the primary national organization for direct financial assistance to families of children with any type of cancer in the United States.

In addition, the NCCS founded the Global Outreach Program in 1993 to partner with pharmaceutical companies to distribute donated cancer treatment drugs and medical supplies around the world. To date, this program has distributed more than $300 million in donated pharmaceuticals around the world.

The Pediatric Oncology Program (POP) was established in 1995 for help during a child’s treatment. While funding bone marrow transplants was the original intent, it quickly evolved into helping all children with cancer. “Now insurance companies are paying for the transplant but there are many other expenses and extenuating circumstances - like finding a donor - so it’s turned into a supplemental family support organization as well,” he said.

Concurrently, the “Beyond The Cure” Survivorship Program (BTC) was created to provide the most up-to-date information on survivorship. The good news is that while doctors then were only able to sustain the life

Celebrating 25 Years!

Carol and Mark Stolze.

of a child from weeks to months, now it’s from years to decades. “The only downside are the resulting post-treatment problems and syndromes such as cognitive learning disorders, loss of certain skills, etc.,” Stolze said. “So the BTC came about to provide information and support to these families.”

The NCCS is a charter member of the Alliance for Childhood Cancer and has also received national and international recognition through the years including: - In 1991, the NCCS was honored by Life Savers Foundation of America with its Victory Over Cancer award.- In 1994, Stolze received the Gorbachev Foundation's Humanitarian ServiceAward and was named the United States Ambassador to the International Trust for Children’s Health Care. - Stolze served as the Chairman of the Board of the International Trust for Children’s Health Care in 1998-1999.- He also served on the Board of Directors of the Human Service Charities of America.- Stolze has made numerous presentations relative to children with cancer, including the keynote address at the International Association of Hematologists of the World conference in Moscow in 1995.

“Not many people know that Mikhail Gorbachev donated the money from his Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 to the Pediatric Oncology Center in Moscow,” Stolze said. “I have developed some fantastic relationships around the world.”

Founded in Troy originally, Stolze said it just made sense to move its headquarters to downtown St. Louis where they have more of a regional presence. As they enter their second quarter century, he said, “We have a long way to go, but I know that every pediatric hospital/unit and every social worker in the nation has our direct line. We get applications directly from the doctor or the hospital, and our staff of nurses and social workers, who all have master’s degrees, review each one and facilitate whatever assistance is needed.”

How You Can HelpThere are many ways individuals, organizations and corporations can help the NCCS continue their challenging mission. Each option is detailed on the web site at www.thenccs.org and of course they do quite a bit of their own fund raising through various events like the annual Humanitarian Award Dinner each fall. At the dinner, the NCCS honors renowned individuals for their contributions to children's health, education and welfare causes, and presents an evening of entertainment for NCCS supporters and friends.

“Our first honoree was Mikhail Gorbachev! We have also had Former President George and Mrs. Bush, Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Katie Couric – so many amazing people,” Stolze said. “Jay Leno was here for our 20th anniversary and Julie Andrews for our 25th. This year is going to be very exciting, but I cannot divulge the secret just yet.”

Another fantastic event, especially for baseball fans, is an “Evening with the Cardinals” which will be held on January 11, 2014 at the Hilton at the Ballpark downtown St. Louis. “It’s a wonderful dinner with past players like Bob Gibson, Lou Brock, Mike Matheny, Mike Shannon – this year will be hosted by Dan McLaughlin and will feature Red Schoendienst, Dave Duncan, Tony LaRussa and Mike Matheny. It will be a fabulous evening.”

The much-anticipated Miracle League ballfield for special needs children and adults has been a dream of CEO Brenda Wagner

for many years. Named “Catch 22” in honor of Cardinals Manager Mike Matheny’s contributions to the project, Wagner said, “The whole community has really rallied around this field.” And she wants everyone to know they are invited to the Dedication Ceremony in October at Longacre Park to help celebrate.

This fantastic ballfield located at Longacre Park will enable special needs athletes to realize their own dreams of playing baseball. “Every child deserves a chance to play ball,” Wagner said.

Since 2005, The Fairview Heights Rotary Club – spearheaded by Wagner – has been striving to raise the funds necessary to construct this field that will have a very efficient drainage system, she said. In fact, it is designed to drain 26 gallons of water per minute. In addition, there will be bleachers and a scoreboard. The surfaces will be smooth and soft making it easier for those with walking devices or wheelchairs.

In the meantime, Wagner has secured other locations throughout the community for special needs kids “ages 3 to 65” to play basketball and kickball, and go bowling.

“The Miracle League has one rule and that is to have fun,” she said. “The league allows these determined kids a chance to play sports regardless of their ability. They are told ‘no,’ so many times, but we will make it work for them.” Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to get involved with Miracle League of Fairview Heights. Please browse the web site at www.miracleleagueplaysball.com to learn more about The Miracle League and “like” them on Facebook at Miracle League Fairview Heights.

What started with just a few vendors on one block of East

Main Street in downtown Belleville has now grown to over 70 vendors and based on attendance, is now the largest festival in Belleville. Going strong for 30 years now and hosted by the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce, the annual Chili Cook-off has featured the culinary creations of individuals, local organizations and area businesses. Many people attend the Chili Cook-off to enjoy the great chili, entertainment and other festivities, but most don’t realize that it’s

the biggest fundraiser of the year for many non-profit organizations. In fact, over half of the vendors participating at the Chili Cook-off each year are either a non-profit organization or a business raising money for a charity. And 100 percent of the money you spend at each booth goes to that vendor. In addition to the money that vendors donate to their causes, the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce also donates 100 percent of the money collected from the People’s Choice Award to the Community Interfaith Food Pantry in Belleville.

7th Annual Junior Idol CompetitionOpen to ages 10 to 17, preliminary auditions will be at 4 to 8 p.m. on August 22. Just like the popular TV show “Cheers,” the Arbor Restaurant and Bar is a place where “everyone knows your name!” And if they don’t, you can count on being one of the gang before you leave.

Known around the area as a comfortable restaurant with homemade cooking and the friendliest staff, Sonda Starr, manager of the Arbor Restaurant and Snack Bar at Bel-Air Bowl, said “we like to have fun here and take care of our customers” – many of who are regulars.

“We have a group of administrative employees at Belleville West who give us a call, tell us when they’ll be here and we have it all set up, food on the table and bills printed out when they arrive,” Starr said, laughing. “They only have 30 minutes for lunch and we can have them back in time.”

The restaurant is open Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but if someone

arrives a little early they will be welcome with a bright greeting and hot coffee or cold beverage. Weekends in the restaurant are reserved for special occasions such as bridal or baby showers, birthday parties and any other celebrations.

Around the corner at the Snack Bar located in the bowling alley adjacent to the arcades area, bowlers can find all the great casual foods they love: pizza, burgers, hotdogs, nachos and more. What if a family comes into the Arbor Room to dine but the kids want the Snack Bar food? - No problem! - they can be accommodated. As well, if someone “on the lanes” would like a salad or something else from the Arbor Room – again, no problem!

Homemade cooking served with a smile is what the Arbor is known for, though, and long-time waitresses Connie Bunch and Jeannie Price treat everyone like royalty. “Everyone has been here for a long time,” Starr said. “Our chef Jan McClintick has been here for 25 years!”

The famous soup and salad bar features homemade cold salads, fresh greens and toppings, puddings, delicious salad dressings and fresh soups including vegetable everyday plus the soup of the day: chicken and dumplings, chicken and rice, chili, clam chowder, ham and bean, and more. “Our soups are all prepared by Connie Knowlten,” Starr said.

Customers will find daily lunch specials as well like pot roast, country friend steak, chicken and dumplings and meatloaf – of course there’s fish on Friday, too. Folks who remember the old Bel-Air location in Belleville will be happy to hear that the Slider Taco is very similar to Hazel and Betty’s famous version and so is the hot sauce!

To top off your meal, everyone gets cake that is

freshly made by Starr herself.

“We want customers to have a little something sweet to finish

off their meal,” she said.

once-In-A-Lifetime opportunity To Hear

4 Award-Winning CCAs on The Same Stage

Metro East residents are being given the once-in-a-life-time opportunity to hear Contemporary Christian Artists Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, Twila Paris and Wayne Watson in one fabulous concert. This historical event will kick off at 7 p.m., Sept. 6, on the stage of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Belleville.

The God Of All Glory Tour is the first and only time to bring together four of the best-known voices in Christian music of the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Steve Green began his career in Contemporary Chris-tian Music nearly 30 years ago as the lead tenor singer in the Gaither Vocal Band, and later formed the ground-breaking Christian rock band Whiteheart. Green recorded his debut solo album in 1984 and won the Dove Award for Male Vocalist of the Year in 1985. Since that time, he’s released 30 albums and 22 number one songs, received four Grammy nominations and eight DoveAwards; and in 2010 was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Since 1980, Twila Paris has released 22 albums and had 33 number one hits. She has been named the Gospel Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year three times, and received a total of 10 Dove Awards and three American Songwriter Awards. Paris was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

For more than 40 years, Larnelle Harris has been lift-ing his God-given tenor voice to the heavens and has recorded 23 albums with 19 number one hits. Harris has been honored with 11 Dove Awards, five Grammy’s and was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Wayne Watson has had 23 number one singles on Christian radio including the 1989 Dove Award’s Song of the Year, “Friend Of A Wounded Heart.” Watson was also named GMA’s Male Vocalist of the year in ‘89 and has a total of seven Dove Awards and two Grammy nomina-tions. In January 2011, the singer-songwriter was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

#1 Antioxidants are key ingredients to help prevent and repair damage to your body's tissue. They work by slowing or preventing the effects of free radicals, which trigger oxidation. Oxidation is a process that can lead to cell dysfunction. If you've seen a piece of fruit turn brown, like an apple or banana, then you have witnessed oxidation. Regardless of your skin type, antioxidants are a vital addition to your skin regimen. Look for skin-boosting antioxidants like Vitamins A, C & E, as well as, green tea.

#2 Growth factors are naturally occurring in the human body. If you were to cut or burn yourself, your body sends growth factors to repair that wound. By putting growth factors on your skin topically, you’re putting your skin into repair mode thereby helping fine lines, redness, pore size, and skin texture.

Growth factors don’t cause any irritation or peeling so they are entirely safe to use during sunny months or on vacations. While growth factors are power-packed, they are also safe to use around eyes and mouth to assist with lines and texture.

#3 SPF - Why does everyone squawk about SPF? Because we want to help you avoid injury to your skin!! Yes, a tan is actually an injury even if it doesn’t blister and peel. More importantly, recurring injuries to the skin increase the potential for sun damage and pre-cancerous lesions. So stay protected! Sun protection creams should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure for maximum protection. If you plan to be outside for an extended period of time, apply your sunscreen often, and remember a hat, sun glasses, and cover up.

If you are particularly sensitive to sunscreens, try SkinMedica’s Daily Defense SPF 30. It’s great for use on the sensitive and oily faces. Mineral-based products, like Jane Iredale’s Mineral Powder Me SPF, is water-resistant and non-hypoallergenic, making it ideal for sensitive skin, kids and men. Dab it on and away you go. Toss one in your husband’s golf bag and keep an extra one in your purse. P.S. Don’t forget to pay special attention to décolleté, neck and hands. These areas are often neglected and show age quickly! Continue to enjoy the warm, sunny days without jeopardizing your skin’s health by incorporating the necessary antioxidants, growth factors and sun protection! Questions about ways to enhance your skin?

Get a complimentary skin consultation at ooh La La Spa, Anti-aging & Wellness by calling (618) 288-9117.

Three Important Steps for Great Skin Care

Submitted by Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness

As we pump up the warm weather fun we manage to, somehow, scale back on skin care. While there are definitely ingredients that make skin more sun-sensitive, there are

THREE important ingredients that shouldn’t be left out of your skin care routine, regardless of the season: antioxidants, growth factors and sun protection. Maximize your skin care to achieve radiant skin by going back to basics.

On a recent Friday morning, the handsomely appointed APG office was bustling with activity. Unlike other pain practices, their unique team approach is designed to diagnose the immediate cause of pain upon

the first visit. Then, through appropriate applied therapies, the goal is to minimize the pain as soon as possible.

APG’s patent-pending "alternative to knee replacement" program has been so successful for patients with osteoarthritis (even bone-on-bone osteoarthritis) of the knees that physicians from around the country come to their offices to train on this program, said Jay Taddei, Chief Operating Officer.

“Over the last 10 years, this program has provided successful results for more than 6,500 people,” Taddei said. “We define success in two ways: significant or complete reduction in pain and helping the patient avoid knee replacement surgery. It is important to note that the majority of our success stories were diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the knee and were told they were going to need a knee replacement." MULTI-MoDAL APPRoACHThe patent-pending program combines Supartz® injections performed under a visual guidance system, a flexible lightweight unloading brace, the BioniCare® Knee System, physical therapy including pain-free Theraciser® rehabilitation, and compounded topical pain creams. All of the following five components work together to provide both rapid and long-lasting pain relief. SUPARTz INJeCTIoNSSupartz is an all natural substance that has a chemical make-up similar to our existing joint fluid, which allows the body to accept it with no side effects or drug interactions. Combined with Theraciser rehabilitation, Supartz injec-tions stimulate the production of brand new joint fluid cells to increase the lubrication and cushioning in the knee joint thus reducing pain. APG does the Supartz injections under a visual guidance system to insure the placement accuracy of every injection.

“The molecular size and weight of Supartz makes injection accuracy of critical importance unlike some medications such as cortisone which due to its small molecular weight does not have to be perfectly placed,” Taddei said. BIoNICARe KNee SYSTeMThe BioniCare Knee System consists of an unloading knee brace and a new, patented electrical joint stimulator. The stimulator is FDA-approved to im-prove the overall health of the knee cartilage. The brace is specifically fitted by a licensed physical therapist to take the pressure off the painful side of the knee. This can provide almost immediate relief while walking and standing.

The joint stimulator easily fits into the brace and the patient doesn't even feel it while it's working. Patients can also receive a night wrap to comfortably use the stimulator while sleeping.

“A study done at John Hopkins University showed that patients who wore the BioniCare Knee System for an average of 11 months were eight times less likely to have a knee replacement even after four years,” Taddei said. "But the most recent study at John Hopkins University shows you can reduce that time to just 3-1/2 to 4 months by wearing the joint stimulator with the unloading brace during the day, and with the night wrap while sleeping. In the study pa-tients received results comparable to a knee replacement after one year. Most surgeons agree that one year post-surgery is the best the knee will ever be." THeRACISeR ReHABILITATIoNThe physical therapy that includes Theraciser rehabilitation is different from traditional physical therapy. Traditional physical therapy has the patient moving in a nice, slow motion. Theraciser is a unique form of pain-free physi-cal therapy that combines slow and high-speed movement with resistance bands. Slow speed strengthens and stabilizes the knee joint. High-speed, pain-free therapy, on the other hand, increases the lubricating and cushioning effects of your existing synovial joint fluid. It also significantly increases the benefical effects of the Supartz injections. CoMPoUNDeD ToPICAL PAIN CReAMSDespite the overwhelming success of APG’s knee pain program, they are always looking for ways to improve it. Adding specifically prescribed and compounded pain creams has helped patients reduce their pain much faster. These creams work rapidly to reduce pain and inflammation, and are much safer and more effective than most oral medications. “Upon completion of treatment, our physical therapists will provide the patient with a home exercise program,” Taddei said, “and stay in touch with our patients several times a year to see how they are doing. If at any point a patient feels the need for an orthopedic consultation, we have close relation-ships with some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Our staff can contact them for the patient, set the appointment, and get them seen much faster.” In addition, APG treats neck, back and shoulder pain. APG has five locations, three of which offer the patent-pending alternative to knee replacement program: edwardsville, Swansea and o'Fallon. Physical therapy is available at the Maryville and Creve Coeur locations. All five may be reached at (888) 363-8333.

Don’t Just Live With Knee Pain, Eliminate ItKnee pain is a very common symptom in people of all ages. It may start suddenly, often after an injury or exercise, or it may simply occur from everyday wear and tear. Knee pain may also begin as a mild discomfort, then slowly worsen.

If knee pain is affecting one’s quality of life, Associated Physicians Group (APG) likely has the answer. Utilizing a multi-modal approach to pain involving four different techniques, physicians and pain care therapists, APG can provide 91 to 94 percent of all patients with new hope for lasting pain relief.

As children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn.

One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undi-agnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association.

Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (track-ing) and be able to see for a long period of time.

August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that par-ents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties:

• headaches when reading• slow or incomplete copy work from board or

paper• avoidance of reading• poor reading comprehension• frequent loss of place while reading• complains words move on the page

• short attention span• smart in everything but school• labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic• working below potential

Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist.

A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustain-ing clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.

According to Dr. Thomas Unger, of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.”

For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.

Back to school is always a great time to update your look, especially for teachers who are on the go from morning to night. Jessica Templin is a busy wife and

mother of two boys, 8 and 4 years old, and is an English teacher at Belleville East High School. Not only is she an inspiration to her students in the classroom, but she also has become an inspiration to many seeking a healthier and more fit lifestyle.

In 2010, Templin experienced a combination of gall blad-der surgery and the personal realization that she was embarrassed to be out in public because of her weight. “I asked myself, ‘have I tried everything?’ And the answer was no – I hadn’t,” she said. What was the magic solution? “A balanced diet and exercise! I stayed away from fast food and started working out with a trainer when I hit a roadblock.” She also enjoyed a nutrition class at Memo-rial Hospital and visited with a dietician at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Templin found an ideal trainer to work out with through Dynamic Fitness Management (DFM) at Club Fitness in O’Fallon. She worked so hard that she lost 100 pounds and was encouraged by her trainer to become a fitness instructor herself. Now she has many of her own clients, including many of her fellow teachers. She is also the “star” of a 24-foot-tall poster at Club Fitness that moti-vates anyone who enters the gym with her success story.

Wanting to share her experience with the students at East as well as her co-workers, she created “Change For Life” now beginning its second year with 45 kids already signed up! “I work with these teenagers to teach them how to make good food choices and to exercise. It’s so wonderful seeing them gain confidence and making better choices.”

Makeover Notes:Templin’s makeover included an all-over hair color – slightly darker than her original color – with highlights and a cute mid-length hairstyle highlighted by bangs sweeping to the side by Sharon Buckman at Studio 50.

“To highlight Jessica's beautiful green eyes, I chose gold tones with brown accents: Mary Kay signature eye colors in Gold Coast, Amber Blaze and Sienna,” said Mary Kay In-dependent Sales Director Kimberly Richey. “We used Mary Kay signature cheek colors in Shy Blush and Sandstone to contour her cheeks, and finished her look with a fabulous Maple and Fancy Nancy from the Mary Kay lip collections.”

The Park Lane jewelry worn by our model is called the “Seductive” necklace with gray cats-eye stones and the “Runway” necklace with black crystals. She is also wearing the “Going Wild” bracelets and the “Antigua” ring.

Back to school means back to busy schedules with everyone headed in different directions. But it is important to not forget your furry friend in the house whose health depends on proper grooming and care. Introducing LaBest Mobile Grooming Inc. – an affordable, convenient and professional service offered by one of the area’s premier dog groomers/boarders that has been family-owned and run for three generations now. LaBest Inc. is a mobile pet grooming salon that literally arrives at your door and performs a full range of salon services.

“We do everything in our fully equipped mobile unit from baths, teeth scaling, massage therapy, skin treatments – you name it,” said Master Pet Stylist Michelle Blanke. “We arrive right in your driveway, or in the street, whichever is preferred. The van is completely self contained with tub, water, blow dryers – everything we need for any size dog or cat.”

The fact that LaBest offers a Master Pet Stylist sets them apart from other groomers who do not

have this pet stylist certification from the International Society of

Canine Cosmetologists. This degree means that the stylist is a DermaTech specialist and has the expertise to determine any kind

of issues with a dog or cat’s skin/coat. Thus, they are able to prescribe the necessary treatment or shampoo. A Master

Pet Stylist also specializes in specific grooming accord-ing to AKC standards for all breeds. In fact, it’s quite unique that a Master Pet Stylist is available via mobile grooming.

Mobile pet grooming services are actually a nation-wide trend because it’s convenient for the customer, it reduces potential stress on the pet and it’s a godsend for home-bound older people as well as busy families.

Veterinarians recommend consistent grooming for any pet to not only make them look good, but to help keep them healthy as well. It also provides the opportunity to be aware of any changes such as on the skin or ears.

LaBest offers discounts on appointments booked at least every four weeks apart. They also have a Neigh-borhood Discount program for neighbors to get to-gether and have their pets groomed on the same day.

Customers of LaBest Mobile Grooming can also shop online and have their products delivered on appoint-ment day for no extra charge. Yard clean up is offered as well at the time of service.

Servicing Illinois and Missouri, call LaBest at (618) 692-6399 to book an appointment and don’t forget to ask about the aforementioned Neighborhood Discounts. LaBest Mobile Grooming Inc. is bonded and insured. www.labestinc.net.

The Missouri Botanical Garden has volunteer opportunities for enthusiastic, outgoing people who are

drawn to horticulture, botany and ecology.

If you have a desire to learn and share knowledge about the Missouri Botanical Garden, consider becoming a Garden Docent. The Garden is actively seeking recruits to participate in the 2013 Garden Docent training.

Docents assist the Garden’s Education Interpretation Department in achieving relevant, meaningful and memorable visitor experiences. This requires an awareness of plants and human reliance on plants for survival; increased awareness of the choices and actions to promote conservation and sustainability; and support for the Garden and its global mission.

“I most enjoy the constant learning and sharing with the public. I also love giving tours, always working with the history of the Garden,” said Joanne Fogarty, a Garden Docent with more than 30 years of service.

Garden Docent responsibilities may include giving the daily public tour offered to visitors, helping with the Garden’s special exhibits, shows and member events, and interpreting the themed Gardens. An outgoing personality is a must as docents interact continually with visitors. Training sessions will be held one Saturday a month, beginning on Saturday, September 14, extending through May, 2014. Docents are asked to commit to three to four hours, one day a week, after completion of training in addition to attending a monthly enrichment meeting from February through November, with the exception of May and August.

Step-by-Step Guide to Top Dressing: - Core aerate the lawn, concentrating on the most heavily tracked sections. - Apply a ½ inch layer of Field and Turf compost, using the Ecolawn Top Dresser - Smooth the surface using a rake or weighted drag mat to break down soil plugs and backfill holes - Spread grass seed, lightly rake, and water – making sure all seeds are covered with soil/compost layer to guard against winter damage - Water as needed, keeping the soil moist until seeds germinate
