Twice per year Parrotheads in the Midwest don their grass skirts and tropical attire, and fly south to VonJakobville for a dayof music, great food, award-winning wine, delicious beer, and a

fun-filled Jimmy Buffett-style party.

“My sister (Dr. Kristen Jacobs) saw this talented Jimmy Buffett-like band called The Boat Drunks and came up with this idea to have them play at the winery,” said Josh Jacobs, General Manager. So they talked the own-ers, Paul and Rhoda Jacobs who happen to be Josh and Kristen’s parents, into the idea. It’s been a huge hit every year since. “The band has a great following throughout the country.”

The Boat Drunks, who hail from Champaign, have been playing to-gether for over 10 years and in that time have produced three original albums and performed opening acts for Jimmy Buffett, The Beach Boys, and Little Feat. Additionally, they are often heard on Sirius radio most specifically on the Margaritaville channel. The Boat Drunks cover Jimmy Buffet songs plus their own self-described tangy tropical rock originals that are all written in the Buffett/tropical vein.

Occasionally the lead female vocalist for The Coral Reefers (Jimmy Buf-fett’s band) - Nadirah Shakoor - joins The Boat Drunks on the stage at VonJakobville. “But this year Nadirah is on tour with Jimmy Buffett and the schedules conflicted,” said Josh Jacobs.

New to this year’s event is an opening act with a fitting name no doubt: The Town Drunk. This one-man acoustic act from St. Louis, specializing in covers of everything from Jimmy Buffett to Tom Petty, starts at noon. “Everyone starts arriving early [doors open at 10 a.m.] to get a good seat, and then they make a whole day of it with lunch, dinner and Von Jakob Vineyard and Brewery beverages,” Jacobs said. This year they plan on offering wine slushies, wine-a- ritas, wine spritzers along with their 20 varieties of wine and over eight varieties of their own specialty handcrafted beers.

“We will have fun Buffett-themed food like a ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’ and other specialty items,” he said. And if the elements don’t cooper-ate – come anyway! Guests will enjoy the party in the winery’s 3,000 square foot special events ballroom. Check the website www.VonJakob.com for more information and to purchase tickets online.

Von Jakob Vineyard & BreweryInspired by his German ancestry as well as his grandmother who taught him to make wine, Dr. Paul Jacobs always had an idea that he would like to own a vineyard. That thought became reality in 1996 when he began planting grapes on the property just across the street from their Tudor-style family home (pictured on the cover) in Pomona, IL, now home to Von Jakob Vineyard and Brewery.

Today, the optometrist and his wife, Rhoda, give visitors the opportunity to “uncork the good life” at two locations that are an easy drive from the Metro East area: the first in Pomona and the newest in Alto Pass. Son and General Manager Josh Jacobs, who grew up around the vineyards has been working alongside his parents in the wine-making business since the winery started. Recently, they have launched Von Jakob Brewery with eight handcrafted styles for those who enjoy the taste of micro-brewed beers.

Want to come and stay a while? Von Jakob has five completely updated suites on the property that come with a wonderful breakfast and cus-tomized wine basket full of goodies, including a complimentary bottle of Von Jakob wine. Each suite includes a king-size bed, Jacuzzi tub and free wireless internet.

Live music is featured every Saturday and Sunday at the Alto Pass location open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Pomona location is open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Please visit the web site at VonJakob.com for more information.

For 17 years, KMOX listeners have tuned in to the graceful tones of Carol Daniel’s voice that reach out like a warm hug bringing news of the day, both good and bad.

Growing up in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. the daughter of an Army veteran and sister to three older brothers who are all military officers, it is immediately apparent that she was taught to have confidence in herself and to lead her life through faith and integ-rity - all with a terrific sense of humor.

Her journey to St. Louis was not what you might expect as a “military brat” or even as a career broadcast journalist as she really only moved once to Germany as a toddler. “I don’t remember anything.” She has lived all over the state of Missouri before landing a job with the Voice of St. Louis.

Actually a business major at the University of Missouri Columbia, she transferred to Lincoln University in Jefferson City where she decided on broadcasting - “I like to say ‘I partied at Mizzou and graduated from Lincoln University,’” she laughed. “I always pictured myself with an eel-skin or ostrich briefcase.” But at the end of her sophomore year she discovered radio. “I really wanted to be a jazz radio DJ until I realized there were only a handful of those in the country – and now even less!”

At the time, she also considered the idea of being a Talk Show Host like Phil Donahue who, at the time, had about the only such show on TV. Little did she know that almost 30 years later she would indeed be the co-host of a popular lifestyle talk show – Great Day St. Louis on KMOV-CHANNEL 4, CBS.

After college graduation her path led her to Kansas City where she spent four years selling radio and print advertising – “I loved it!” She also spent some time on the air there before moving back to Fort Leonard Wood where she worked at an AM country station reading the news and noon-time obituaries.

“One of the best compliments I have ever received was from my mother who said, ‘I love the way you read the obituaries.’ I thought how nice that someone would think my voice was so comforting.”

From there she moved to Cape Girardeau – where she met her husband, Patrick Daniel, whom she has been married to for 17 years. One day while at work in the newsroom after 3-1/2 years, “I got this phone call out of the blue. It turned out to be the KMOX program director, Tom Langmyer, calling me from his car phone as he was driving down I-55 to Memphis,” she said.

“While Tom traveled he always listened to local radio to find talent,” Daniel explained. “He said, ‘You don’t know me but I have an opening at KMOX.’ My co-workers said my end of the conversation went like this: ‘Yes! Absolutely! Of course! I will! Thank you!’”

So she gathered pictures, resume, writing samples and FedEx’d them to Langmyer. A week later, she and her husband drove to St. Louis where she stayed over night at the Adam’s Mark – “I thought, ‘we have arrived!’” The next day, a Saturday, she was sitting in the studio with Charlie Brown for a live, on-air test. She had received “a sample of the clock” in the mail to study and the rest is history. “The clock” is radio lingo that

Carol Daniel

“ You have to be poised. You have to be able to give people clear and concise information”

means the program schedule showing the broadcaster exactly what happens when – commercial times, news times, sports, etc. “That clock seemed so confusing and I had no idea how I was going to manage it but Charlie was so helpful,” she said.

“I love working in St. Louis,” she said. “I really enjoy motivational speaking. The reac-tion I receive from the audience still surprises me. The nature of our community here is that people genuinely express their support of you, they challenge you but most people are pleasant. Of course I get hate mail and rude telephone calls, but certainly never out in public,” she said.

“Can you believe 1,500 people applied for the job of anchor and reporter at KMOX in 1995?” she asked. “I know I am replaceable but I do feel like I have built something here,” and she and her listeners have gone through many things together.

One of those things was the tragic death of her good friend, KMOX anchor/reporter Nan Wyatt, who was murdered by her husband 10 years ago. It was an event that shook the whole community. “I think about that everyday – our boys were the same age. It really made me think about where I was in life. Her funeral prompted me to tell my husband how I want to be remembered: above all else I want to be remembered as a mother and wife – the rest is superfluous.”

Daniel said that while delivering the news on the air, both good and bad, “You have to be poised. You have to be able to give people clear and concise information” par-ticularly in the event of an emergency like bad weather. “There are stories that get me choked up or offend me,” but it’s important to deliver the message.

In 2008, her “Phil Donahue” goal came to fruition as she landed the role of co-anchor on the popular CBS daytime lifestyle talk show Great Day St. Louis. “You know back when I was younger I didn’t see a lot of people like me in TV broadcasting,” she said. “They were mostly blonde and blue-eyed so I really didn’t even pursue the idea. My mother once told me that if I wanted to change the industry, I should try to do it from the inside.”

When the opportunity arose, Daniel called the General Manager of KMOV-TV (CBS), Allan Cohen, and got an interview for the Great Day St. Louis position. “I went out and bought a new suit and makeup,” she laughed. “I was scared because I had never read a teleprompter – it was easier than I thought!”

The main difference between radio and TV, she said, is how you dress and how you look. “I’m a girly-girl on steroids! And you know clothes look different standing up than when you are sitting down.”

Clearly she enjoys the experience and likes to help a nervous guest by telling them to, “just look at me – let’s just have a conversation.” “I’m amazed and humbled by my journey.”

Living In the Metro EastWhen it came time to make the move to the St. Louis area in 1995, Daniel and her husband, Patrick, really explored every nook and cranny. They look at homes in Kirk-wood, St. Charles and West County but it was her sister-in-law who pitched the idea of living in the Metro East.

“She told us how great the school district is in O’Fallon” along with more affordable housing costs compared to West County and it’s only 20 minutes from downtown. “We really love the town and the fact that it is so near Scott Air Force Base where we liked the diversity and well-traveled people,” she said. “We just think it’s the best fit for us.”

The Daniels have two sons: 12-year-old Marcus and 16-year-old Patrick. The family is very involved at New Life in Christ Interdenominational Church in O’Fallon including The J2O ministry, or Journey to Oneness. “This ministry was started by our Pastor as a way to give husbands and wives the tools they need to have the marriages God in-tended for them: strong, successful, intimate and God-centered,” Daniel explained. “We know that communication is key and that love and respect are paramount.”

Currently they are contributing to the growth of their church as they raise funds for a youth building on the campus of New Life in Christ Interdenominational Church. Daniel is also a long-time supporter of the United Way among other organizations.

She is also quite a talented writer and had a column for nearly 10 years in the St. Louis American as well as a column for two years in Savvy Family magazine. “I even won two national awards from the National Newspaper Writers Association,” she said.

Daniel has also been honored for her work by the St. Louis Association of Black Journalists, The Missouri Broadcasters Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Monsanto YWCA. She is a member of the YWCA Women’s Leader Class of 2005 and she has also received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. State Celebration Commission’s Distin-guished Local Media award.

Daily headlines warn about the dangers of mosquitoes particularly this year after an unusually warm winter and spring. Yes, mosquitoes are merely annoying

but they are also blood-sucking transmitters of deadly disease. In fact, many scholars theorize that the mosquito is responsible for more human deaths throughout history than any other organism.

Armed and at the ready to protect you and your family is Mosquito Squad - a new company in Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties. “The breeding cycle begins when the temperature is a constant 60 degrees and above,” said Gary Alves, co-owner of Mosquito Squad along with his son, Ben. “We started spraying in March of this year which is very early. The ‘usual’ time frame is May through October.”

It was through personal experience that the father and son duo decided Mosquito Squad would be an excellent venture for the two of them. “My son has a wooded back yard at his South County home and gave Mosquito Squad a try. He thought the treatments worked so great that we should look into investing into the franchise in the Metro East where I live,”

Alves said. They treat residential and commercial properties for mosquitoes as well as ticks and fleas. “What sets Mosquito Squad apart from other treatments is that it specifically focuses on mosquitoes,” he said. “The company has done extensive research on mosquitoes and has developed the chemicals necessary to reduce the insect’s population by 85 to 90%. We know how they breed and precisely where to apply the spray.”

Mosquito Squad has a number of different types of treatment from the traditional barrier spray which is effective up to 21 days, a platinum spray every two weeks, misting systems that spray three to four times a day, and a special event one-time spray. They also offer an all-natural spray.

“Realistically we can’t eliminate 100% of mosquitoes, but we do have one of the most effective treatments in the area which has been proven across the country,” Alves said. “In fact, we are one of the fastest growing franchises because of the product’s effectiveness.”

Kirk Sonnenberg opened his first paving business right out of college in 1983 and has since developed one of the largest landscaping and material supply companies in Southern Illinois with two locations each on 6-1/2 acres.

“All through high school and college I worked for an asphalt company so I had been in the industry for quite a while before getting my degree and starting my own company,” he said. In 1991, he found and purchased a three-acre piece of property and started the second phase of his business: Sonnenberg Landscaping Material and Supply Inc.

Later the same year, Sonnenberg added an installation division to keep up with demand. Most recently, the Belleville location has expanded to include a new shop and display store plus the company opened their second location in Columbia.

The material and supply store property maintains a stocked inventory of over 1,000 tons of bulk rock and a few hundred pallets of block, brick and pavers as well as a vast variety of other landscape materials and supplies including outdoor lighting. The landscaping company employs more than 30 employees with a vehicle fleet of over 40 trucks and pieces of heavy construction machinery. And the installation crews are supplied with all the latest cutting-edge equipment available.

“This has been our best spring ever,” Sonnenberg said. “Because of the weather, people got out and started on their outdoor projects earlier than usual. We are set up for the do-it-yourselfer here. We educate the customer and walk them through the process and

we have same-day delivery. Of course, we are happy to come do the project for you, too.” Look on their comprehensive web site for upcoming workshops and demonstrations.

“I think landscaping and gardening has grown so much because people are spending more time at home rather than traveling and they want nice things in their back yard” like a patio, outdoor kitchen and/or fireplace, Sonnenberg said. “It seems that water features are becoming more popular, too – like the new ‘pondless’ waterfalls so there’s cascading water, but no standing water at the bottom.”

Sonnerberg also does a lot of commercial asphalt work for large parking lots like church-es, etc. plus you will likely see their trucks out sealing many residential driveways May through September.

The Sonnenberg family name is thought of fondly by sports fans of Belleville Township High School and Belleville West High School as many members of the family were stand out athletes through the years. Photos of these memories are on display throughout the handsomely appointed indoor showroom at the Belleville location, Frank Scott Parkway and 161. “Yes, people who visit us remember my dad, my grandpa and my uncles,” said Chris Sonnenberg, the son of Kirk Sonnenberg, who is also in the business now.

Visit the Belleville location at 1460 Frank Scott Parkway west, (618) 398-0838; and the Columbia store at 8526 hanover Industrial Dr., (618) 939-9121; www. sonnenberglandscaping.com.

Community Teaching garden Learns From Seniors

The East Side Health District is working to turn their health district that serves approximately 65,000 residents into a “Healthy Campus” by turning approxi-mately one-half acre of land from “weeds to seeds.”

In partnership with the Arthur M. Jackson Jr. M.D. Health Care Foundation (AMJHCF), the Green Partner-ship and countless local volunteers, ESHD has opened the “F.R.E.S.H. Community Teaching Garden.”

“Our mission is to use this garden to serve as an educational tool for local families and individuals,” said Elizabeth Patton-Whiteside, RN, BSN, MBA and public health administrator of the ESHD. “By creating a sustainable, healthy and readily available commu-nity food source, we can better achieve our mission of wellness promotion in the community.”

Participants have been able to learn how to grow, pick, cook and can the produce the garden produces. The ultimate goal for ESHD, AMJHCF and other stakeholders is to teach individuals how to grow vegetables and fruits in “their own backyards” while enjoying the “fruits of their labors.”

“We couldn’t have done this without the help and knowledge of our seniors who have worked so hard here,” Patton-Whiteside said. And they are helping to encourage garden participation among children. Numerous studies have shown that kids who par-ticipate in garden-based activities perform better in academic, social and health-related domains.

Garden features include raised and keyhole gardens; outdoor classroom; fruit trees and a variety of veg-gies; kid’s play area; walking paths; and compost pile.

To find out more about the Community Teaching garden and the Farmer’s Market where you can purchase fruits and vegetables grown in the garden, please visit www.eshd.org.

get Energized with good Clean AirBy richard J. Avdoian, MS, MSw, CSPProfessional Speaker/Consultant/Coach

Research confirms that a person who spends time in the clean air and sunlight can relieve anxiety and feelings of stress, minimize bouts of depression and enjoy better physical health. The older we get it seems the stress piles up and our bodies handle it in all kinds of unseemly ways.

In fact, the mere mention of the word “stress” can accelerate our blood pressure which is not good for people of any age! Thus, many people see stress only as a nega-tive but in reality, they are wrong. If you embrace the concept of stress, it can play a key role in life by challenging your thinking and recharging your batteries.

I might even go so far as to say life without stress would be dull. Learning to use stress positively can enhance your ability to meet life’s challenges and meet your goals! The trick is to learn balance and take time out for some true relaxation in the great outdoors.

Personally I enjoy any activity around water like boating, fishing, swimming - the serenity of the water reduces my stress and the sunshine gives the body that neces-sary nutrient Vitamin D.

Next time you’re feeling “stressed out,” get yourself outside and try some of these exercises:

Deep Breathing and Visualization1. Grab a blanket or fluffy towel and find somewhere to sit with your legs in a

comfortable position2. Rest your hands on your legs3. With your mouth closed, breathe in slowly through your nose and hold for

a count of five4. Exhale forcefully and completely through your mouth with puckered lips

(like blowing through a straw) 5. Repeat three to five times6. While still seated, recall a special event or scene that you enjoyed taking

particular note of the details, smells, sounds and scenery

Summer is finally here. As your family calendar be-comes full of summer events and you start to schedule those Back to School appointments for your child’s upcoming school year, are you sure you haven’t forgot-ten something important? What about your child’s eyes? Vision problems can af-fect more than just seeing the board or reading a book. research has shown that vision problems can: 1. interfere with academic performance2. slow down overall development3. cause a short attention span4. make reading difficult 5. result in lowered self-esteem It’s usually pretty easy to tell when your child has dif-ficulty seeing things in the distance (such as the board in school), but most parents don’t know what to look for to determine when a child has difficulty seeing the words in a book. There are so many potential explana-tions for why a child struggles with reading that par-ents often lose sight of the obvious. Many parents mistakenly assume that the vision screenings are the same as a complete eye examina-tion, and incorrectly assume that their child’s vision is fine when they pass the screening. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems; and 3 out of 5 children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems. “Whether your child is a bright underachiever, struggles with reading or has developmental delays, the good news is that the majority of vision problems that impede learning can be corrected – once they are detected,” said Dr. Thomas Unger, an optometrist with an office in Troy.

Please take a moment to review the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading• slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper• avoidance of reading• poor reading comprehension• frequent loss of place while reading• complains words move on the page• short attention span• smart in everything but school• labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic• working below potential Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. Please take the time to learn more about the vital role vision plays in your child’s academic performance, it could make all the difference! For more information or to schedule an appointment Dr. unger can be reached at (618) 667-2020.

too cool! Say goodbye To Stubborn Fat At Ooh La La

It’s called stubborn fat for a reason: no matter how healthy you eat and how much exercise you do, it’s virtually impossible to lose those annoying extra pounds. In the past you were left with two options: live with it or have sur-gery. However, now there is a cosmetic body contouring procedure called CoolSculpting that targets fat cells alone, eliminating them in an easy, non-intrusive fashion that exercise and diet can’t achieve as quickly or as effectively.

What makes this body-shaping method remarkable is how non-invasive it is compared to other cosmetic fat reduction procedures such as liposuction. There are no injections and there is minimal recovery time.

How Coolsculpting works: CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, patented procedure that uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are fro-zen. Your healthy skin cells remain. No knives. No suction hoses. No needles. No scars. Once crystalized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body through the liver. In a few months: say “hello” to a new you!

Unlike a lot of other procedures, CoolSculpting takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into your daily life. After your CoolSculpting treatment you can typically get right back to your busy day. Each treatment lasts one hour so you can easily fit your appointment into a lunch break.

Minimal downtime and lasting results: After one visit, you’ll typically see a noticeable reduction of fat. It takes a few months to fully realize the effects, mainly because it takes that long for your body to naturally dispose of the fat cells. And yes, you can lose even more with additional appointments if necessary.

It is important to note that Coolsculpting is intended for cosmetic use, and is not covered by health insurance. Like other cosmetic procedures, it should never be substituted for a healthy diet and exercise.

To learn more about CoolSculpting or to schedule a complimentary consultation, call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and wellness Center at (618) 288-9117 today!
