Jason Spengler, President of Spengler Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Remodeling and 13 year-old baker Chloe Stirling, who has become known as the Cupcake Girl, unveiled the new kitchen that Spengler donated its remodeling services to accommodate her and her family's needs.

“Everyone at Spengler considers Chloe part of our family,” Spengler said. “Her dad, Ched, has worked for us as a plumber for nearly ten years. And we have enjoyed many of Chloe’s Cupcakes! So when we heard that she was put out of business by the health department in early 2014, because she didn’t work out of a certified kitchen, we made plans to build her a commercial grade kitchen."

Chloe had been making cakes and cupcakes out of the family kitchen, mostly for friends, relatives and fundraisers. She had some paying customers and the student at Triad Middle School had been making about $80 a week. Her parents made a deal with Chloe that for every dollar she earned, they would match it so she could purchase her first car when she turned 16.

“When you have a young person show their entrepreneurial spirit to start their own business, you want to do everything you can to help them succeed especially when roadblocks are put in their way,” Spengler said.

Original plans were to construct a separate commercial grade kitchen for Chloe as an addition onto her home, but then the story took a dramatic and unexpected turn. Chloe changed the law in the state of Illinois in the Summer of 2014, which now allows home baking businesses to operate, as long as they disclose that the goods were baked in a home and that their sales do not gross more than $1000 a month.

Once the law changed, plans for Chole's Kitchen evolved too. Spengler's team of remodeling experts met with Chloe and her parents and came up with a plan that created two kitchens in one! This would allow for Chloe to utilize half for baking, while the other half is set up for the family.

"It's the perfect space," said Heather Stirling, Chole's mother. "She can bake in her half andI can still prepare our family meals at the same time. In addition, we gained an expanded dining area with built in seating that will serve as both a family gathering space, and needed storage for Chloe's ever growing baking dishes."

The new kitchen doubled the size of the old space by removing a wall that divided the kitchen from the dining room. It includes state-of-the-art custom cabinetry with soft close features designed to hold all of Chloe's baking supplies, as well as separate sinks featuring touchless faucets, two dishwashers and individual preparation areas.

The non-porous quartz countertops are perfect for food preparation and cleanliness because they naturally do not harbor bacteria or viruses. And there is now space for the new double oven, range, microwave and refrigerator that Rachel Ray gifted to Chloe during an appearance on her show.

"This is beyond my wildest dreams," said Chloe. "I can't thank everyone enough for all they have done to help me continue baking. Dreams do come true!"

"We could not have done this project without the help of other area businesses who donated their services," Spengler said. "We are so grateful to Jennaver Brown and her team at Eye on Design Drapery, Shutters and Blinds, who created the perfect custom window treatments as well as pillows and cushions for the new custom banquette seating area."

"And a big thanks goes to Bill Luchesi, owner of BNL Electric, who donated his expert services to provide all the electrical work, ceiling lighting and new under cabinet lighting for Chloe's Kitchen."

A community wide open house is being planned for Monday, October 12th from 4PM to 7PM to allow all of Chloe's supporters to come tour Chloe's new kitchen and sample some of her cupcake creations. Details can be found at www.spenglerco.com and Facebook page. Call 618.589.2185 to schedule your free remodel kitchen/bath consultation today.

You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordi-nating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense.

Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight.

With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energyefficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today.

A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system.

Incredibly, this figure is more than 7 times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2” faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings.

Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control.

A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home.

To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket.

Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill.

Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business

of ultra-violet control and asset protection.Ultraviolet light entering your home as sun-light will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 65% or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy.

Hunter Douglas has revolutionized the use of sheers by integrating them into beautiful horizontal and vertical products such as the versatile cordless Duolite® shade and the popular Silhouette® and Luminette® shades designed to block 88% of incoming UV rays.

An ever increasing variety of stunning sheer fabrics are now available on the market with affordable price points for custom made prod-ucts. ADO has developed a clever method of adding sheers to your “not-so-pretty” vertical blinds. The Ado-Wrap® allows you to wrap your existing vertical blind in a custom sheer thus providing you with the benefits of a sheer during the day and a vertical blind at night.

If you would like to justify the expense of custom window treatments in your home, work with an experienced window treatment professional to select hard-working window treatments that can meet all of your design requirements. You shouldn’t be afraid to invest in window treatments that look magnificent in your home if they are designed to reduce your home maintenance costs.

Lower your energy bills and protect your home furnishings with style.

Window Treatments with and brains.beauty

Creative Landscapes is happy to report a successful year so far after making the transition from Scott’s to their new name. Building upon their long-time reputation as an innovative

leader in the landscape industry, they provide a landscape that is carefully planned via computer imaging technology to enhance a home’s beauty and increase its value by an average of 12%.

An important element of landscape design is the lighting said own-er Josh Martie. “I would like customers to consider the importance of landscape lighting not only for aesthetics, but for safety as well.

“Really, the number one reason for landscape lighting is to light up walkways, corners, doorways, patios and porches to provide a safety element to your home at night not only to protect from intruders but to eliminate potential falls, “ he said. With today’s range of products on the market, Creative Landscapes can install a super nice lighting package to suit any budget.

Techniques Creative Landscapes likes to incorporate into the lighting design:• Highlighting trees. Whether illumined from below or given

presence by a light mounted in the tree itself, trees make stunning features.

• The use of uplights. Uplighting is dramatic because light is ex-pected to shine downward. Used in moderation, it’s a great way to highlight architectural and landscaping features.

• Having a focus. The entryway is often center stage, a way of saying, “Welcome, this way in.”

• Combining beauty and function. For example, adding lighting to plantings along a pathway breaks up the “runway” look of too many lights strung alongside a walk.

• Varying the fixtures. While the workhorses are spots and floods, designers turn to a wide range of fixtures, area lights, step lights, and bollards or post lights.

• Sticking to warm light. A rainbow of colors is possible, but most designers avoid anything but warm white light, preferring to show-case the house and its landscape rather than create a light show.

Another trend, Martie said, is toward the use of LED fixtures that were once disparaged for their high cost and cold, bluish glow. “But now they’ve come down in price and now have that warm light people love in incandescent bulbs.” Although LED fixtures remain more expensive than incandescents, installation is simpler because they use low-voltage wiring thus customers save on their electricity bill. Plus, LED lighting lasts three times longer.

Creative Landscapes can use their revolutionary computer imaging program to show homeowners exactly how the lighting will appear on their home, but even more specific, Martie said, is for the cus-tomer to actually see it “in person” on their home: for $50, Martie will come to the home and set up a demonstration for the customer to see, say, when they drive up from work. Then the next day the lighting is removed so the same customer sees it bare again – “It makes a huge impact!”

The lighting company that Creative Landscapes uses provides a three-year warranty on aluminum fixtures and a lifetime warranty on copper and brass pieces. “Copper and brass of course are more expensive, but when comparing them to aluminum you can just feel the better quality that will last much much longer,” he said.

On top of these generous warranties, Creative Landscapes gives their own two-year craftsmanship warranty on their lighting. “If there’s any wiring or other issues, we come out and fix it for free!” The most cost-efficient way to purchase lighting is within a custom designed landscape package so all is installed at the same time.

Look for the Fall Open House on October 9, 10 and 11, which will feature a Blood Drive. Martie said he will also be running a food drive at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Now in business for 36 years, The Finishing Touch Home and Office Interiors LLC in Edwards-ville invites anyone interested in home and office interiors to visit their elegant Victorian seven-room showroom located in the heart of the downtown shopping district.

Filled to the brim with brand-new home interior accessories, fine furniture, area rugs and custom window coverings, the shop is a treat for the eyes with each room painted in a different styl-ish color. Featuring top-quality furniture from Century, Sherrill, Precedent, Fairfield and more, customers will fall in love with something in the shop to take home or custom order with the help of the staff.

Carrie Babington is the owner and licensed interior designer along with interior designers Mary Droste, who has been with the firm for 30 years, and new addition, Molly Ferguson who has expertise in kitchen and bath design. Bustling about the show-room on a recent visit, the team was completely redesigning everything from furniture and accessories to rugs and wall décor.

As a seasoned interior design firm, The Finishing Touch staff’s goal is to meet the need of each client’s taste and style. While they real-ize that decorating one’s home is personal, the staff works to attain that personal feel especially with people who do not have the time or have no idea where to begin on their own.

“We are here to help our clients solve any interior design issues. We take pride in creating personalized environments that reflect each individual’s taste,” said Babington.

"After 36 years we feel we can offer these five elements: resources, experience, knowledge, longev-ity and customer satisfaction. From start to finish, there’s really not much we can’t do. Offering a wide price range," she said, “the goal is to make the client’s home look like they had envisioned it and complete it within their budget.”

Too often, potential customers have the perception that a design firm is costly, but in reality that’s just not the case. An experienced de-signer can save many projects from costly mistakes in the beginning, saving the client money in the long run while developing the perfect end product. Many long-time clients began with a consultation, worked at the next level including design development and imple-mentation, and now come back continually as new projects arise.

Starting from the ground up is also a specialty: “We love to start with blueprints before breaking ground on a new home or addition. This way we can help them figure out how their furnishings, draperies, etc., will fit properly: Are the rooms large enough? Are the windows and doors in the right spots to allow proper walk flow? We can save a lot of time for the contractor and disappointment for the client,” Babington said.

The Finishing Touch also enjoys having many commercial customers in the area such as doctor’s offices, upscale auto body shops, law offices, funeral homes, restaurants and even executive motor coaches to name a few. Their design will reflect the client’s professional im-age while fulfilling their need for function whether it is traditional, contemporary, transitional or otherwise.

The Finishing Touch is located at 415 Vandalia in Edwardsville; (618) 692-1574; www.finishingtouchdecorating.com.

Since February, new customers at That Finishing Touch in O’Fallon have repeatedly discovered excellent prices, free decorating advice and a wide variety of furniture, home

décor and art pieces.

But this time of the year, owner Ricka Kreider’s attention turns to the holiday season. This year “The Holiday Shoppe” promises to be beautiful as always and will inspire ideas for customers' seasonal décor. In fact, she has spent the last year gathering holiday items to create The Holiday Shoppe scheduled to open at That Finishing Touch on October 22 through December.

Some of the seasonal merchandise available will be Fall, Hal-loween and Thanksgiving themed items, decorated Christmas trees, a wide array of reasonably priced ornaments, and Christ-mas decorations of all types. Custom-made wreaths, garland and bows are made to order and offered at very competitive prices. As in the past, Kreider will also take on a limited number of client’s homes and businesses for custom holiday decorating. She still has a few slots so call soon.

The Holiday Shoppe will also carry gift items produced by local artisans including polymer clay creations, jewelry, soy candles

and porcelain succulent plants as well as items from Poo-Pourri, Creative Co-Op, Burton and Burton, and Wind and Willow.

Because the shop will be completely redone for the holiday season, it will be closed October 20 (Tuesday) through the after-noon of October 22 (Thursday). That Finishing Touch will reopen with a special Holiday Shoppe Open House Thursday October 22 from 4 p.m.to 8 p.m. offering light refreshments and door prizes - please stop in for a look at the transformation!

Holiday hours will start November 1 (Sunday) and will be open seven days a week from November 1 through December 23 as follows: Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays 1 to 4 p.m. The store will also open at 8 a.m. on Black Friday for those early bird shoppers - come by for a little respite and enjoy a cup of coffee.

That Finishing Touch, Ltd. is located at 629 West Highway US 50 in O’Fallon Centre next to Walgreens in O’Fallon; (618) 726-7811. Items in the store can be viewed in the Galleries tab under the Current Displays and New Arrivals pages on the web site which is updated weekly: www.thatfinishingtouchltd.com.

A-1 Concrete Leveling of Maryville has been offering solutions to uneven concrete problems since 2007 and now owners Tony and Karen Goforth are pleased to announce an ambitious expansion to include foundation repair, bowed basement wall and leaning chimney repair.

Communities everywhere are plagued with uneven and sunken concrete, cracked founda-tions and chimneys breaking away from the building or home. These are more than incon-veniences - they represent dangerous hazards such as tripping and are unsightly as well. Every property owner - residential and commercial - is looking for cost effective solutions to these vital and necessary repairs.

Concrete LevelingOver 20 years ago, Grover Miller developed his first self-contained pumping unit to level concrete. Drawing on his 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Miller saw the need for a cost-effective method of raising and saving concrete, and developed a unique piece of equipment to fill that need.

By drilling a small, 1-inch hole in an existing slab (from sidewalk blocks to airport run-ways!), an environmentally safe slurry is then hydraulically injected into the existing slab and lifts it to its original position: fast, cost effective and guaranteed.

Miller developed the adjustable piston and screener for the self-contained leveling unit, which is truck mounted so there is no need to wheel heavy equipment onto the customer’s lawn. These, along with other innovations have allowed A-1 Concrete Leveling to provide a highly efficient and cost-effective method for leveling concrete surfaces compared to tradi-tional “tear-out” and “repour” methods.

In 2007, the Goforths discovered A-1 Concrete and this innovative technology, and joined forces with the company. “We call it concrete leveling, but the original term is mud jacking,” said Tony Goforth. “You may also hear the terms slab jacking, concrete raising, injection leveling - whatever you want to refer to it as - it will save you time, money and your con-crete. We also offer caulking and crack repair. Our product combined with customer service gives a great competitive edge in the market."

A-1 ‘s expansion into solving structural problems like cracked foundations, bowed base-ment walls and leaning chimneys is through the use of their patented Quad–Power® Piering System that provides superior lifting power. The expanded surface area at the base of each pier produces a load bearing capacity that is superior to competitive methods. The Quad–Power system provides a cost-effective and permanent solution in more varied soil strata and soil conditions than any competitive piering system.

Foundation Crack Repair There is an easy way to permanently repair foundation cracks without the need for costly and disruptive excavation or drain tile. Poured foundation cracks can be repaired by the A-1 Concrete Leveling patented process, which uses a two-step Epoxy/Urethane injection.

Bowed Foundation Walls/Basement Repair Pressure from the exterior ground soil can cause block foundation walls to bow and deflect inward. If left unchecked, this condition can result in catastrophic failure.

A-1’s method of repair involves installing temporary braces – which are always removed when the work is complete - on the interior foundation walls, then excavating the exterior ground around the bowed section of the foundation. The bowed walls are then mechani-cally pushed back into place, and steel rebar is inserted vertically into each block before pumping the wall full with high-quality grout, which is allowed to cure fully. A-1 then backfills the ground soil and the braces are removed from the foundation walls after three to five days. This method not only pushes the wall back into place, it also stabilizes the structure to prevent future bowing.

Leaning Chimney Repair The chimney foundation is excavated and piers are permanently attached. A specially designed brace is positioned to allow pressure to be applied, pushing the chimney toward the house. The foundation is drilled and concrete grout is injected under the foundation, providing additional stability and support. After the chimney has been repositioned, the piers are locked off and the chimney is backfilled to a rough grade.

A-1 Concrete in Maryville is fully insured, licensed and bonded. Call (618) 344-9923 today for a free estimate or email [email protected].

Increasingly popular within commercial and residential facilities is pol-ished concrete: a process that enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete. The benefits of natural concrete are durability and aesthetic value. Polishing results in a smooth, sealed appearance.

Why choose to polish your concrete floor? There are four significant rea-sons why polished concrete is a better alternative for a long -term solution.

Pleasing Aesthetics: People typically compare polished concrete’s cost and its appearance to other materials. It is important to note that polished concrete is a viable, economical and long-lasting flooring option, by smoothing and exposing the aggregate in the concrete, followed up by polishing provides a design that has a natural stone appeal and appears expensive and elegant.

Increased Ambient Lighting: High light reflectivity of polished concrete is another important benefit, especially for office buildings, hotels, restau-rants and other public facilities that want to project a bright, clean, profes-sional image. Polishing can give concrete a higher degree of shine, similar to polished marble or granite that can be achieved with a high-gloss coating. This means greater visibility and fewer overhead lights required in buildings with polished floors.

Environmentally Friendly: Polished concrete utilizes low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which makes it an environmentally friendly surface. There are no coatings applied, such as epoxies, urethanes or waxes. And there are no slurry or hazardous waste. In addition, polished concrete

floors are recognized by the United States Green Building Council and LEED certification as an environmentally friendly flooring option.

Lower Lifetime Cost: One benefit of polished concrete is lower mainte-nance cost. In high traffic areas especially, such as schools, hallways and corridors, polished concrete holds up better and lasts longer than tradi-tional floor covering systems. Not only are polished concrete floors easy to clean, requiring only damp mopping, they can resist scuffmarks and tire marks. Also, the downtime required for the polishing process is minimal, allowing service or traffic on the surface to begin almost immediately.

Bricks and Stones also is an expert in the creation of concrete countertops. The real advantage with these counters is that they make possible so many new, custom one-of-a-kind designs. Concrete counters are the trend now, yet they have been out long enough to amend early problems.

Concrete could be the right choice for your home if:• You want something unique and personalized• You want something that looks natural and has character• You appreciate high-quality, hand-crafted items• Granite is too shiny, too formal, too common• Synthetic solid surface materials look and feel like plastic• You need a color or visual texture that's not available with other countertop materials

For more information about polished concrete or concrete countertops, you may call Bricks and Stones at (618) 363-0829 and visit www.creativeconcretepros.com.

Everyone will notice; but no one will know. Dr. Kristen Jacobs Followed Her Passion To Aesthetic Medicine

Passion inspired Dr. Kristen Jacobs to first expand her medical practice to include aesthetic medicine and then to make it her primary mission.

“There are many people dabbling in aesthetic medicine and the difference between them and myself is that I am 100% committed day in and day out,” Dr. Jacobs, owner and medical director of Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness, said. "Three years ago, I decided to dedicate my practice to aesthetic medicine because it is truly rewarding to help my patients feel better about themselves. I am so lucky because I absolutely love my job!"

“I use a natural, artistic approach that enhances one's look without over doing it," she said. "I tell my patients 'You are my walking billboard so the goal is for you to look refreshed and not overdone. Everyone should notice, but no one should know that you've had anything done!'"

Dr. Jacobs, a board-certified physician, is considered one of the top providers of anti-ag-ing treatments in the greater St. Louis area. Along with prevention and wellness coach-ing, Dr. Jacobs provides a whole-body health prescription that focuses on diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes that help patients discover and enhance their natural beauty.

This passion has led her to become the #1 provider of Botox and Juvederm in the greater St. Louis area, placing her in the top 1% of Allergan accounts in the United States. She is also an Allergan Certified Botox and Juvederm Trainer and Educator, offering her expertise to physicians and nurse injectors from all over the country who are interested in learning about aesthetic medicine. This is a distinguished honor offered only to the most-experienced and trusted aesthetic physicians. In addition, Dr. Jacobs is a Scientific Advisor to ColoreScience and is a SkinMedica Key Opinion Leader. She prides herself in keeping her patients looking natural and real, while enhancing their beauty through proven anti-aging treatments such as Botox, Ultherapy, and CoolSculpting.

“We have been doing CoolSculpting longer than any other practice in the area,” she said. “I chose to use this method because I think it offers the best technology thus the best results.”

The gorgeous 12,000-square-foot Medical Spa includes a Skincare Boutique "because I believe everyone should start with quality skincare, a relaxation room to decom-press, and multiple treatment rooms to fulfill all your treatment needs," she said. “We truly care about our patients and are committed to the highest service and the best results you can get. I also like to take my time and work within your budget.”

Staff members at Ooh La La “are just spectacular,” she continued. "They are loving and caring individuals. They are also expert advisors on everything that we offer because I believe that continuing education is essential to provide the best treatments and results possible.

"This is another key point of difference that Ooh La La offers that other clinics may not."

Located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Car-bon, you may call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness at (618) 288-9117 to schedule a Complimentary Skin Consultation.

Merle Norman-Fairview Lends Their Expertise To Cancer PatientsHearing a diagnosis of cancer isn’t something we can imagine

unless the disease has personally touched us ourselves. Women undergoing treatment for cancer can suffer from

many side effects including hair loss and dry skin.

Fortunately, there is a lot of help in the Metro East community to assist people through their challenging journey. Merle Norman in Fairview Heights is a sweet refuge where simple things like wigs, turbans, sleep caps, makeup, eyebrows, eyelashes and skin care products can mean a difference in how a person undergoing treat-ment for cancer feels about herself.

With over 150 wigs in stock in a broad range of colors, there is bound to be something for everyone. If a particular wig is not available in the store, Sabrina Fudge, owner, said she can get it

within a week. The staff has received extensive training and educa-tion in the fit, and selection, of wigs to help customers make the best choice.

“And if the wig is bought in the studio, I can tweak, cut or trim it to make it perfect for the customer,” said Fudge. Knowing how the skin changes for those going through chemotherapy, Fudge has products to put moisture back into the skin such as Energizing Concentrate and Changing Skin Moisturizer along with the Anti-Redness Line that produces calming effects.

It may be necessary to change one’s foundation color or formula, blushes and lipsticks, too, and Merle Norman is there to lend a hand in making the transition easier. Many foundations and makeup items have moisturizers already in them.

Of course Merle Norman has hydrating facials and masks to lend moisture to the skin as well.

Eyebrows can be affected during treatment and “we can help you create a natural eyebrow appearance with our Brow Wow brow care, ” Fudge said. "While it's our sincerest wish that nobody should have to face cancer, we are here to help."

From now through October 31, customers may donate $5 in the store to the Breast Cancer Research Fund and receive a goodie bag with some favorite petite treats.

Customers are invited to come in once a month for a free facial and consultation. Visit the Merle Norman Studio in Fairview Heights across from Schnucks or call (718) 624-FACE.

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS!1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of

undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child...• Dislike reading?• Skip or reread lines?• Prefer to be read to?• Lose place when reading?• Have trouble remembering what has been read?• Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?• Make numbers/letter reversals?• Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Whether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids read-

ing and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help.

When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam.

Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision prob-lem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems.

Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.”

Children do not know how they are sup-posed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

•Problemswithtracking•Poorcomprehensionandattention

Belleville Philharmonic Launches 149th Season with Stars of Tomorrow Concert

The Philharmonic Society of Belleville will open its 149th season at 7:30 p.m. October 24 at Lindenwood University Auditorium in Belleville with its annual Stars of Tomorrow Concert. The program features performances by the winners of its Young Artist Concerto Competition in addition to symphonic masterworks by the Philharmonic Orchestra.

The concert opens with the “Overture to ‘Egmont’” by Beethoven and concludes with “The Firebird Suite” by Igor Stravinsky. The heart of the program will feature a concerto movement performed by each of the three competition winners: Tong Zhao performing Grieg’s “Piano Concerto in A minor;” Nathan Hsu performing Dvorak’s “Cello Concerto in B minor;” and Olivia Long performing Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto in D flat Major.”

Tong Zhao, age 15, attends Clayton High School and studies with Laura Schindler of St. Louis. He has won numerous awards for piano throughout the St. Louis metropoli-tan area.

Nathan Hsu is a junior at Ladue High School, has played cello for 11 years and stud-ies with Catherine Lehr Ramos of St. Louis. He has played with the St Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra for three years and performed as a soloist with orchestras through-out the metropolitan area.

Olivia Long, 17, hails from Frontenac and is a senior at John Burroughs School. She started playing piano at age 4, studies with Wen Shen and has earned wide-spread acclaim for her playing, including performances in Carnegie Hall and at the Golden Key Music Festival in Vienna, Austria.

The Stars of Tomorrow competition is held each spring. Three young musicians are chosen to perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra at the first concert of the next concert season. The Philharmonic also sponsors the annual George Tuerck Memorial Concerto Competition providing solo performance opportunities with the Philhar-monic Youth Orchestra.

Robert Charles Howard, Conductor and Music Director, is especially proud of the Philharmonic’s efforts to support classical music study for young people. “Since its inception, the Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra has been an active agent in the development and encouragement of young talent,” said Maestro Howard. “This is true of the Stars of Tomorrow and Tuerck Concerto Competition but also of the orchestra itself. The current adult orchestra has at least eight players who played in our youth orchestra as children.”

The Masterworks Chorale and Children’s Choruses, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Mager, are set to open their 42nd Concert Season with the world premiere of Dr. Mager’s choral ballet, “Land of Rest,” performed with regional professional dancers in tandem with the Metro-East’s premiere choral ensembles.

The world premier of “Land of Rest” by Dr. Stephen Mager will feature dancers Laura Roth, Ellen Vierse and Mary Virtue.

The remaining 2015-2016 concert schedule is as follows:The Masterworks Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorale: “Music for Young Voices”3 p.m., November 1 at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Belleville. The Metro-East’s finest youth ensemble presents a spirited program of music.

Masterworks Chorale, Children’s Choruse and Orchestra: “A Masterworks Christmas: A Ceremony of Carols” 7:30 p.m., December 13 at St. Clare Catholic Church. Featuring Megan Stout, harpist: The annual holiday classic features Benjamin Britten’s ethereal “A Ceremony of Carols,” a candlelight procession, favorite Yuletide carols, even an audience sing-along.

The Masterworks Chorale, Children’s Choruses and Jazz Ensemble: “Masterworks Broadway Pops”7:30 p.m., February 27 and 3 p.m., February 28 at Lindenwood Auditorium. A concert with pizzazz! This program features Broadway and pop favorites in dazzling choral arrangements at the refurbished auditorium at Lindenwood University-Belleville.

The Masterworks Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorale: “Voices of Spring”3 p.m., April 17 at St. Paul United Church of Christ

in Belleville. This splendid ensemble of talented choristers performs masterworks of the treble repertoire, folksong arrangements and selections composed expressly for young singers. The Masterworks Chorale and Orchestra present "Of Conflict and Triumph: Haydn’s 'Lord Nelson Mass'” Featuring Stella Markou, soprano; Elisabeth Bieber, mezzo-soprano; Don Frazure, tenor; and Brandon Smith, baritone.3 p.m., May 1 at St. Clare Catholic Church. A magnificent event! The Masterworks Chorale joins a full complement of professional soloists and orchestra in Haydn’s stirring “Lord Nelson Mass,” composed as the celebrated British admiral defeated the French in the historic naval battle at Abukir. Haydn’s orig-inal title for the work was “Missa in Angustiis” – “Mass in troubled times.” Indeed, the composer’s powerful music conveys the drama and color of the Napoleonic age.

Season tickets are $50 for five concerts. Individual concert ticket prices are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for adults; $5 in advance and $10 at the door for students and current military. Tickets are available from chorus members or by phone at (618) 304-9094. Groups of 10 or more receive a 20% discount on tickets ordered in advance.
