We’ll make sure your vehicle is ready for any road.

Watching leaves turn bril-liant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful dis-plays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country.

While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Un-derstanding certain incon-veniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves.

STAININGLeaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended pe-riod of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint.

It’s important to manually

pick leaves off of the car’s surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle.

Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or auto-motive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.

CLOGGING

Leaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding fl ow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the wind-shield wipers should be re-moved. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting.

Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear ex-haust pipe.

SLIPPERY SURFACESThe Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the sur-face of roadways can be haz-ardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Driv-ers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off -ramps more carefully.

Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fi ll potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing dam-age to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them.

Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

Many Halloween images are depicted with a full moon in the background. Full moons evoke visions of werewolves baying or vampire bats fl ut-tering by. But a full moon on Halloween is actually quite rare. A full moon that oc-curs on Halloween is actually most often a “blue moon,” or the second full moon of the month. On average, a full moon appears once every 28 days, or the time it takes for the Moon to orbit around Earth and be on the other side of the Sun. Very rarely a blue moon can occur when the full moon appears twice in one month. The last time a full moon appeared on Halloween was in 2001. The next time Halloween revel-ers will be treated to a full moon on Halloween is Satur-day, October 31, 2020.

Toll Free: 1-866-221-2006Local GEICO Agents Now Serving Your Area This is the time of year that I like to start one of my favorite flowering plants. It is

the Amaryllis Hippaestrum vittatum. The Amaryllis is a tropical flowering bulb that is almost always sold in a kit form that includes a pot, soil, and of course, the Amaryllis bulb. Hippaestrum vittatum is a member of the larger Amaryllidaceae family that includes Clivia and Nerine, summer flowering bulbs that are commonly grown outdoors in our flowerbeds. Another unexpected member of this family is the Agave. Native to Mexico, the Agave is famous for its use in the production of tequila. The flowering bulb we know as Amaryllis is descended from plants that are native to Peru. Amaryllis flowers range in color from pure white to wine red and every variation in between. Banded, striped and bordered hybrids have been developed, transforming an already striking plant into an extraordinary specimen indeed! It is not uncommon for the flower spike to rise 2 ½’ above the top of the bulb and produce flowers 7” across! This, coupled with the fact that Amaryllis are incredibly easy to grow, it’s no wonder that they’re such a popular choice during the cold, gray/white days of midwinter. When you’re ready to plant your Amaryllis bulb, first inspect the bottom of the bulb and pinch off any dead, dried out roots. Roots that feel fleshy and firm should be left intact. The pot should seem too small for the bulb. It should only be an inch or two wider than the widest part of the bulb. Plant the bulb so that the top 1/2 to 1/3 of the bulb is exposed above the soil. Water well after potting, then place your Amaryllis in a warm spot (on top of the refrigerator works well for me). Don’t water it again until you notice a stem beginning to emerge from the top of the bulb. Once this happens, move your Amaryllis to the brightest location you’ve got and keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy wet (we don’t want to rot the bulb). The stem you noticed growing is the flower spike and it will grow quickly with noticeable growth occurring each day. When the huge flowers begin to open, you can move your Amaryllis to a cooler location to prolong the show of flowers. The next step is the best. Just enjoy the flowers. You’ll notice that all the buds won’t open at once. As one flower reaches its peak, the next will begin to open so you’l1 enjoy a continuous display for about a month or so. Sadly, the time will come when all the flowers have finished. At this point you should cut off the flower stem. Your Amaryllis will probably have sprouted leaves by now. Make sure that you don’t cut them off when you’re removing the spent flower stem. To prepare your Amaryllis for next year’s flowering cycle, it’s important to promote this leaf growth. Think of these leaves as solar collectors that convert energy from sunlight and send it down to the bulb for later use. Exposure to bright light is the source of next year’s flowers. Keep the soil just lightly moist and feed with a half strength solution of Miracle-Gro or another soluble plant food about every two weeks. Let the leaves grow as long as they want to. Since your Amarayllis isn’t as attractive during this “energy storing” phase, you can put it outside over the summer. Make sure that it’s reliably above 45 degrees at night before you move your Amaryllis outside. This means that you’ll probably want to wait until early June or so. Simply sink the entire pot into a semi-shady flowerbed so that the exposed part of the bulb is almost covered and then ignore it until September. Sometime over summer the leaves will have turned yellow. Before frost freezes your Amaryllis, bring the potted bulb inside, snip off the dried out leaves and let the soil in the pot dry out completely. Let it remain totally dry for at least a month. You can leave it dry and dormant for three months if you wish to. This dry storage period is necessary to stimulate your Amaryllis into its next growth and flowering cycle. That brings us back to the beginning of the cycle where you’ll water it and place it on top of the refrigerator. Remember, Amaryllis like to be pot bound so leave it in the same pot for at least two or three years. These are just a few of the plants you can use in the winter to cheer you up on those seemingly endless winter days. Of course, just spending some time in the greenhouse of your local garden center picking out an African Violet or Amaryllis growing kit is another great way to escape from thoughts of winter. Perhaps I’ll see you there! Thanks for the read.

DON’T MISS OUT ON THESE

AUTO INSURANCE DISCOUNTS

There is seemingly no end in sight with regard to the rising costs of owning an au-tomobile. From the cost of the car or truck itself to the high prices of fuel, drivers increasingly are on the hunt for ways to curtail the costs of owning an automobile. One way to save some cash is to take advantage of auto insurance discounts you may be eligible for.Auto insurance company fulfi llment is at record high. However, many discounts may still be available, even if drivers or their agents may overlook them. Fierce competition among insur-ance providers continually adds to the bevy of new dis-counts many are willing to off er to woo new customers. According to Bankrate.com, which looked at the discounts off ered by auto insurance companies, many companies now off er new discounts to remain compet-itive. If you haven’t shopped around for auto insurance recently or have not revis-ited your current policy, you may be missing out on sub-stantial savings.• Daytime running lights: Four out of the 10 largest auto insurance companies now off er discounts if your vehicle has daytime running lights.• Low mileage: Don’t take the car out often? Such hab-its may earn you a reward. Around 80 percent of the major insurance companies off er discounts for low mile-age. The insurance company

may provide a mileage track-ing device that will report back the actual miles driven to the company.

• Grades: Check with your insurance company if you have a student on the policy. His or her good grades may qualify you for a discount.

• Occupation: Your occupa-tion also may entitle you to a discount on insurance. In-surance companies believe that people in certain occu-pations or those who spend a lot of time on the road may be less likely to take risks. Find out if your occupation qualifi es.

• Alumni associations and clubs: Certain organizations have teamed with insurance

providers to off er discounts to members. Therefore, if you are in a fraternal group, a credit union, an alumni as-sociation, or some other or-ganization, you may eligible for certain discounts. Check with your insurance compa-ny for their affi liate groups, or contact the organization to which you belong for more information.

• Multiple policies: Many in-surance companies will of-fer a discount if you group your policies together into a bundle. Having homeowner insurance, auto insurance and life insurance through one company, for example, can earn you a substantial discount.

Insurance companies have many other discounts avail-able if you ask. For example, if your vehicle has an anti-theft system or environmen-tally friendly components, you may be eligible for a discount. Customer loyalty, paperless billing, paying all your bill at once, being a current or former member

of the military or if your ve-hicle is a new model year also may make you eligible for discounts that can drasti-cally reduce the cost of your policy.
