Many student-athletes who aspire to play at the college level are not familiar with the ins and outs of academic requirements and eligibility as they need to be in order to pursue their goals. “Guiding the College-Bound Athlete,” is a program designed by Rick Wire, President of Dynamite Sports, a Pennsylvania-based corporation, and the father of 9 year NFL veteran Coy Wire. This seminar will provide families with information about the availability of athletic scholarships and the realities of the college recruit-ing process. Interested participants are asked to come early to receive a number of handouts and watch a powerful pre-program video. For infor-mation about Dynamite Sports, go to www.dynamitesports.com.

Thomas Kubiak is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the National Association of Tax Professionals.
What do you like to do with your free time? Relax, read, take a nap... We doubt you answered “Do my taxes!” The IRS esti-mates that between accumulating necessary paperwork, navigating current tax laws and fi lling out the required forms, the average taxpayer in the US will spend approximately 16 hours preparing their 2014 tax return. In some cases the time can well exceed this estimate. Accutax Income Tax Services is glad to help you understand the complex tax laws that make up our current tax system. In addition to helping you pay as little tax as possible, we can also make suggestions which will reduce your taxes going forward or help you save more for the future. Tom Kubiak, an IRS Enrolled Agent with more than 20 years tax preparation experience, is the owner of Accutax, and is always willing to help local taxpayers work to reduce the amount of tax they are paying. “Often”, says Tom, “simple deductions are overlooked which could result in signifi cant tax savings. Combine the tax savings with increasing your retirement contributions and you will make a measurable change on your personal fi nancial picture.”
Tom and his associates at Accutax are glad to look over your situation and make some suggestions to help you save. Although many think that using a tax preparer can be expensive, Tom is proud to charge less than the major fi rms and often his fee is not much more than would be paid to a software company for a self-prepared return. Additionally, Tom and his staff are available year round and are happy to offer advice or tax planning ‘on the house’. Tom says: “We never charge our clients for consultations. In fact, we encourage them to make an appointment and talk to us before they make any fi nancial decisions.”
Call 893-2683 and make an appointment now for a free review of your last three year’s tax returns. They will let you know if any changes to those returns would benefi t you. Or make an appointment to have your 2014 tax return prepared.

TOP TEN FAMILY TRAVEL BATTERY CARE TIPS SURVIVING ACCIDENTS ON MAJOR ROADS(NAPS)—It’s a cold, hard fact: Icy roads are
dangerous for even the most experienced driver, and even in dry weather, multicar pileups have closed interstates.
If you’re ever involved in an accident on the highway, take heed of a particular hazard: In many cases, people in multiple-vehicle accidents are hurt or even killed after surviving the initial crash largely unscathed. Three things to remember to avoid being among them are:
1. Stay Inside: Stay in your car. According to the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration, about 16 percent of pedestrian traffi c deaths occur on freeways. People who get out of their cars are killed and injured far more often than those who stay inside;
2. Stay Belted: Even those who do stay in the car but unbuckle their seat belt are more easily and severely hurt by subsequent cars that pile into them;
3. Stay Calm and Connected: Don’t panic and don’t get into a discussion on the spot with another driver. Do try to signal the other drivers to get off the road to somewhere safe where you can exchange information and contact the police.
As one California Highway Patrol offi cer put it, “The best safe practice would be to stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on. If your vehicle is drivable, we always recommend getting out of the roadway. Bottom line: The freeway is a very dangerous place for pedestrians to be, and people need to realize that the potential for major injuries or death skyrockets as opposed to being in your car with your seat belt on.”
Added an EMT after a crash, “Never, never, NEVER get out of your car on a roadway unless your life is in imminent danger if you do not.
“I can’t stress how dangerous it is to ever get out of your car on a road. You have absolutely no protection if someone plows into you, and if you are stopped, chances are much higher that someone will get hurt than if traffi c were moving normally. Plus, if you are out of your car, busy exchanging information with someone else while standing in the road, you aren’t paying 100 percent attention to what might be coming up behind you, lessening your chances of getting out of the way when something goes wrong.”
(NAPS)—To help you avoid getting stranded with a dead car battery on your next family road trip, Gale Kimbrough, also known as “Mr. Battery,” off ers these suggestions:
Helpful Hints1. Take a few minutes to read about your bat-tery in your car’s manual and become famil-iar with the type of battery it is, where it is and how it can be cleaned safely.2. At the start of each new season, check the battery to make sure it is still fully charged for the excursions ahead.3. When working with your car battery, wear protective eyewear, remove all jewelry and wear long sleeves to protect your arms from battery acid discharge.4. Perform a visual inspection to see if the battery case is showing signs of extreme bulging, cracking or leaking. Replace your battery if you see any of these signs.5. If your battery has removable fi ller caps, open them and check the water level in each cell. If the level is low, add distilled water (not tap water) until the plates are covered, preferably to one-half inch above the plates.
This prevents the buildup of sulfate crystals, which can reduce the overall battery charge and performance.6. Avoid overfi lling, because heat can cause the electrolyte solution inside to expand and overfl ow.7. Clean up the connections by removing any corrosion and lead oxidation and make sure to brush the dirt and grime off the case.8. To remove the battery cables, fi rst discon-nect the negative cables and then the posi-tive. To reinstall the cables, fi rst connect the positive cables and then the negative.9. Be sure the battery is mounted securely in place to minimize vibration. Excessive vi-bration is harmful to the battery plates and terminals and could lead to battery failure. After completing reconnection, use a pro-tective spray on the terminal connections.10. Have your battery and electrical sys-tem professionally tested every three to six months, especially prior to heading out on a trip or extreme changes in temperature.In just 30 seconds, Interstate All Battery Cen-ter locations can provide a free printed anal-ysis of your vehicle battery condition.

In only a couple days we’ll have tucked February away for another year. Good riddance I say! We’ve endured another very cold winter and this time we’ve had a snowier than normal February. That’s actually a good thing since that blanket of snow keeps the bitter cold air from forcing the frost deep into the soil. It also prevent repeated freezing and thawing which heaves our shallow-rooted perennials form the ground. It looks like March may be running a little cooler than normal but it will still be much warmer that what we’ve endured for the last couple of months. With any luck at all, we’ll be able to get out into our yards in by the end of the month and start our early feedings of shrubs, trees, lawns and flowerbeds. But, what the heck with? Before we can actually get out there and feed anything, I’m going to explain a bit about fertilizer. Regular readers will have to bear with me on this. You’ve seen this before but you may benefit from a refresher too. The first step is to get a handle on those three mysterious numbers on all fertilizer bags. You have noticed them haven’t you? You may be familiar with 5-10-5; the most common vegetable food. By law, the numbers represent the percentage, BY WEIGHT of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) respectively. “WAIT A MINUTE” you say, “if the 5 the 10 and the 5 are percentages, they only add up to 20% of the bag.” I gotta tell you, you’re really on the ball. Guess what, the rest of the bag is filler! The filler is in there to “make the product easier to spread evenly without burning” as the manufacturers will tell you. This is all true but, the ability to adjust the amount of filler vs. nutrients is a device fertilizer producers can manipulate to make a lower food quality appear better than it is but, more about that later. Anyway, the first number, N, or nitrogen shows how much of the fertilizer is devoted to green, upward growth. The second number P, or phosphorus, shows how much is devoted to root growth and flower & fruit production. The last number K, or potassium is an overall building block that benefits all parts of the plant.
I know that many of you understand all this but I know that many more of you are buying fertilizer based on pretty packaging, celebrity endorsements or tarot cards.
Now that you know this you can walk around the garden center and impress your friends by saying things like, “No, no. You don’t want 10-6-4 for you perennial border. It has too much nitrogen. You need more phosphorus for roots and flowers.” Or, “Say Jason, your lawn is kind of sparse. Maybe you need a lawn food with more phosphorus to help it thicken up.”
While you’re there showing off, you’ll probably notice that each manufacturer has their own “secret formula” that they would like you to believe is better than all the rest. Since these products represent a multi-billion dollar business, you better believe that a lot of time and money has been spent to convince you that their product is better than the rest. Your ignorance of fertilizer products is crucial to their success. Pretty packages and celebrity endorsements are all designed to keep you from asking two key questions. First, WHAT IS THE FORMULA; 5-10-5, 10-6-4, 12-0-0? This I’ve already explained. Remember, these three numbers must, by law, appear on the bag. Often a manufacturer will brag about their formula. What you’ll never hear mentioned is how much their bag weighs. This information is also required to appear on the product but there are no rules that say how large it must appear. Until you know how much the bag weighs, you can’t possibly know what you’re buying. Remember that the three numbers represent the percentage, BY WEIGHT, of the three major nutrients. This means that a higher number on one fertilizer doesn’t necessarily mean that it has more of a nutrient than another product. In other words, the percentages are meaningless until you know what they are a percentage of. If someone asked you if you’d rather have 10% or 50%, you would naturally ask, “Of what?” 50% of $1 is certainly less than 10% of $10. So remember, when you’re looking at those three mysterious numbers, the real mystery is, “Where the heck did they hide the weight on this bag?” Until you find out, you have no way to figure out how much of the bag is filler and how much is actual nutrient. % X weight = what you are getting. While the E.P.A regulates WHAT may be put into these products, there are few rules for HOW CLEARLY the manufacturer explains this information. It’s all there on the package but it’s up to you to figure it out. The best thing to do is to get to know someone at your local garden center that does ”get it” and have him or her assist and educate you. Thanks for the read.

1. Stay Inside: Stay in your car. According to the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration, about 16 percent of pedestrian traffi c deaths occur on freeways. People who get out of their cars are killed and injured far more often than those who stay inside;
2. Stay Belted: Even those who do stay in the car but unbuckle their seat belt are more easily and severely hurt by subsequent cars that pile into them;
