Meet the Artist!SARATOGA SPRINGS - Kyle deCamp: Urban Renewal. Mon-day, Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m. A regional premiere of New York City performance artist Kyle deCamp’s latest multimedia piece. “Urban Renewal” is a meditation on perception, public policy and the significance of buildings lived in, from a child’s rigor-ously unsentimental point of view. In this solo performance, deCamp maps an experience of growing up in Chicago in the chaotic ’60s, caught in the crosshairs of power and history. A conversation with the artist will follow this event. This special program is made possible in part with public funding from the New York State Council on the Arts’ Electronic Media & Film Presentation Funds, administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Networking GroupSARATOGA SPRINGS - Kingdom Builder’s, a networking group for Christian business owners, professionals, and job seekers will be meeting on Thursday, December 5 at 8am at the Gideon Putnam Resort, 24 Gideon Putnam Rd, Saratoga Springs. For more information please email [email protected] or call (518) 301-0140.

Jack Frost’s Flurry FestivalSCHUYLERVILLE - Taking the village by storm, Jack Frost’s Flurry Festival will welcome the winter and provide a flurry of family fun, games, activities, prizes and awards! This Free fun charged event will mark the re-opening of the Greater Schuy-lerville Youth Program at Fort Hardy Park from 1 - 4 pm, Sun-day, December 1st. The event was the brain child of Jack Frost himself! He will be on hand to MC the festivities and he is en-couraging participants to don their frosty garb. He promises to judge their frosty fashions and to crown a King, Queen, Prince, Princess and Jester for his icy court. Some competitions have trophy awards too. Admission is Free and refreshments will be available for purchase, or can be won by playing Free games. While there is no charge, Jack Frost is encouraging participants to bring a handmade snowman craft for sale in his silent auc-tion to benefit the Greater Schuylerville Youth Program. Jack also thinks it would be nice for those who can to bring canned food items to share with our local pantry. This event brings families together for warm winter memories and rich Kodak moments. This is a low tech, high energy old fashioned winter carnival. Jack will be dispensing bottled northwind to players to improve their chances of being winners at the games. Adopt A Pet...Pets of the WeekAdopt A Pet...Pets of the WeekDaisy Daisy is an extremely sweet black

and white 1-year old female, who is soft as a bunny. She is very af-fectionate but still a bit shy. She wants to be held and cuddled but

she’s not sure who is safe just yet. Daisy is a purring machine

and very playful! She loves catnip mice and likes hiding in a cat

tunnel. She’s very good at using the scratching post and hasn’t scratched any furniture. Daisy gets along well with other cats

Patches

and has lived with a large dog. She’s a sweet girl who would make a great addition to any family! Janice tolerates being held and

seems like a rather self-sufficient little girl! She is big into toys and loves to play. When Janice is feeling stressed, she can swipe

out with her paw or growl, which is why we feel a calm, adult-only home would be best for her.

Patches LOVES to be petted and is a very affectionate, cool cat. Some

of these pictures don’t do him justice at all: he’s a big-headed, beautiful boy. Super playful, he likes to toss his toys and play! Patches favors the lady-critters, he’s not so keen on male cats or dogs. He was found

living outdoors but at 6 years old, has transitioned fine into an indoor cat. If you’re looking for a loyal and sweet companion who will be the king of

your castle then Patches is your guy! For a meet & greet with either of these wonderful cats, please call H.O.P.E. at 518.428.2994. Visit us online @ www.hopeanimalrescue.org to view profiles of more adoptable dogs and cats, check our events calendar and find more

WARM UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

Dos And Don’ts Of Holiday Shopping Thanks to sales featuring heavily discounted items, millions of people wait to start their holiday shopping until the season hits full swing. But in spite of such bargains, overextending budgets during the holiday season is too tempting for many shoppers to resist. However, shoppers need not risk fi nancial peril if they shop smartly and heed some dos and don’ts of holiday shopping.

* Do set a budget. Establish what you can afford to spend on gifts and other seasonal trimmings early on. The National Retail Federation estimates that the average consumer will spend around $700 come the holiday season. But not every person needs to be a big spender. The “buy now, pay later” mentality that credit cards offer lands many shoppers in trouble, a sticky situation many only notice once the fi rst bill comes due. If you cannot afford to pay your entire credit card balance off once the bill arrives, you face steep interest charges that can quickly add up. Instead, pick a set spending limit and keep to it no matter how tempting it may seem to overspend with a credit card.

* Don’t be fooled by false sales. Retailers understand that a good advertised deal lures shoppers into their stores. As a result, some retailers mark up the cost of certain items in order to slash the prices for holiday sales. Even if you are saving the assumed 50 to 60 percent, the fi nal cost of the item still may be higher than normal. Comparison shop and do your research so you don’t fall victim to clever pricing.

* Do schedule time for shopping. Hectic schedules sometimes result in last-minute shopping that leads to impulse purchases. Schedule some distraction-free time for your holiday shopping so you’re less likely to rush into purchases before thinking them through.

* Don’t double buy. Some shoppers use the holidays as an excuse to buy more for themselves than the people on their lists. While it’s tempting to treat yourself come the holiday season, this is a great and quick way to deplete your budget. If you plan on using holiday deals to supplement your own wardrobe or household needs, reduce your spending the rest of the year and save money for year-end purchases.

* Do collect coupons and look for purchasing incentives. Comparison shopping not only helps you get the best price, but also it can shed light on coupons, shipping discounts and other incentives that lower the overall cost of products. Search online for Web sites that publish coupons and codes for online discounts, including free shipping. Join a store’s marketing list and receive emails with deals sent directly to your inbox.

* Don’t be afraid to delay some purchases if need be. If hosting a post-holiday gathering where gifts will be exchanged, it’s perfectly acceptable to delay buying those gifts until after Christmas or Chanukah, when many items can be found at even lower prices. Many stores reduce prices on merchandise come December 26, so you can wait until after the holidays to shop for

items that will be exchanged with distant friends and relatives. This enables you to save more money and use any received gift cards toward shopping.

* Do keep a level head. Some people forget the true mean-ing of the season is spending time with loved ones. Getting swept away by shopping and worrying about deadlines can make the season less enjoy-able. Don’t allow the stress of holiday shopping to com-promise an otherwise joyous time of year.

Gizmo

KikiKiki is a shih Tzu, 6 yrs old and fully vetted.

Kiki is a friendly little sweetheart.

If your looking for an older, smaller dog then we have GIZMO for you. He is a 7yr old Shih Tzu. Ready to be your lap dog.

Gizmo is housebroken and we are told a real smart little fellow.

This is little Miss Penny and here is her story. She is a little Min Pin about 8 lbs, 12 months old. She is up to date on vac-

cines and microchipped. She is the cutest, sweetest love bug and needs a family to call her own. This older couple picked her out from a breeder and could not afford any veterinary care. One day she ran out, got

hit by a car and her leg was broken in two places. They could not afford to have it fixed so it healed slightly off kilter. Miraculously

she jumps, plays, runs and you would never know that this happened to her except

occasionally she holds the back leg up. We are all not perfect and this should not stop anyone from giving this cutie pie a furever home. She is the perfect lap dog and she is housebroken and crate trained. Please call the shelter for more info at 518-654-6220 or

come by to meet her.

Saratoga Film Forum SARATOGA SPRINGS - In The Public Interest! Blackfi sh. Thursday, Nov. 21, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 22, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 24, 3 p.m. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite • 83 min. • USA • 2013 • Rated PG-13. The killer whale (Or-cinus orca) is the common name applied to 35 species of ma-rine mammals that belong to the oceanic dolphin family. The name “killer whale”—which is falling out of favor—belies its nature. Orcas (as they are correctly and becoming more commonly known) hunt to eat, but in the wild there has never been a recorded orca attack on a human. However, in captiv-ity, it’s another matter entirely. In 2010, Tilikum, a bull orca featured at Orlando, Florida’s SeaWorld (“Shamu” is the stage name for the orcas that are forced to perform at SeaWorld), abruptly attacked and killed trainer Dawn Brancheau, a story that made national headlines. And this was not the only incident of a trained orca going rogue. What went wrong? The prob-ing documentary “Blackfi sh” looks at the question posed by keeping these animals in captivity, and looks at a conundrum: places like SeaWorld do help inspire awe and respect for these beasts—but at what cost to the animals? And, are they better off in captivity than they would be in the wild? Is a gilded cage still just a cage? The fi lm combines shocking, never-before-seen footage with interviews with trainers and experts to look at the orca’s extraordinary nature, the species’ often cruel treat-ment in captivity over the last four decades, and the growing disillusionment of workers who were misled and endangered by the highly profi table sea-park industry.

Create A Gift Wrapping Area

Nearly as much energy goes into wrapping gifts as pur-chasing them. Some people excel at wrapping gifts, while others do not enjoy the task at all. Part of the trouble with gift-wrapping is the room and tools needed to wrap all of those holiday treasures. But a gift-wrap station in a corner of the home that is sel-dom used can make wrapping presents any time of the year easier and more enjoyable.* Find a place to store gift wrap and the tools needed to wrap gifts. Many people fi nd the back of a closet door works perfectly. * Install wire hanger racks so the gift wrap tubes can be stored vertically along the surface of the door.* Install a folding shelf on a hinge, and use that shelf to do your wrapping. Fold the shelf up when it is not needed and secure it with a latch at the top. * Hang hooks to store tape and scissors. Attach the scissors to the hook with a string so they won’t go missing. * A basket tucked nearby can house bows and ribbons so that they are easily stored until needed.Having the wrapping station so accessible also allows you to take inventory of supplies and restock when necessary.

The days continue to shrink as we move toward the solstice and it’s attendant holidays

(Christmas, Hanukkah, etc.). At this time of year, we decorate our domiciles for the upcom-

ing festivities surrounding the holidays. Featured are our holiday plants. Everywhere we

turn we’ll see Evergreen trees, Mistletoe, Holly & Ivy, Christmas Cacti and Poinsettias. Why

are they involved in our modern holiday celebrations?

Their backgrounds are varied and quite interesting. Some were adopted by Chris-

tianity from “pagan” cultures that existed in an area before Christianity arrived there. Others

never were adopted into Christian lore, but have managed to make their appearance on their

own, through folklore and traditions that include their use in celebrations on or near the sol-

stice.

Take mistletoe for instance. Not only did the church never sanction the use of

mistletoe in celebration; its use was actually banned at one time. This is, no doubt, due to the

fact that it was highly revered by the ‘pagan’ Druid priests, and was central to their ancient

solstice celebrations along with its host, the oak tree. During the Druid’s solstice celebration,

a Druid priest would cut the parasitic mistletoe from the branch of an oak tree and distribute

pieces of it to the gathered populace. While doing this, he was careful not to let it touch the

earth. Part of the mystery of mistletoe to the Druids was that it grew, not from soil, but from

the bark of the oak tree. To receive a sprig of mistletoe from the priest was a blessing Druids

looked forward to as part of their solstice rituals.

Today, all we know about mistletoe is that we are entitled to kiss anyone who

stands beneath it. That tradition has its roots in Scandinavian myth. Loki, a troublesome

little god, shot Balder, another young god, with an arrow made of mistletoe, the only thing

that could harm this favorite son of Freyja. The tears of sorrow Freyja shed became the white

berries of the mistletoe. All the Norse gods worked together to restore Balder to life and, in

gratitude, Freyja is said to bestow a kiss on anyone who passes beneath mistletoe.

The origin of the use of Holly as a holiday decoration is a bit more obscure. It was

long believed that “witches” and “evil spirits” had an aversion to holly, so it is likely that

it’s use began as a protector of the home during important times of the year like the solstice.

There is an ancient Christmas carol that tells of Holly and Ivy vying for the place of honor as

a holiday trim. Holly is eventually chosen because of its red berries. There is also a legend

that says that the crown of thorns worn by Christ was made of Holly. Until then, the berries

of holly were white, but turned red like the drops of Christ’s blood. Thanks for the read.

Longest Roads In

North AmericaRoad trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasons can yield entirely different views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelers across the country, and for those driv-ers interested in traveling the longest roads in North Amer-ica, there are two options at the ready.

At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilo-meters), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest road-way in North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10 provinces of Canada between the Atlantic and Pa-cifi c Oceans. A person can travel all the way from New-foundland to British Colum-bia on the highway. The sys-tem was approved in 1949 and the highway offi cially opened in 1962. Drivers on the highway will easily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers.

Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365 miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in the United States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Boston, Mass. In the west, it ends at Newport, Ore. The “0” in the route’s number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route 20 travels through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.

Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its highways in 1964 and a portion of the route was transferred to another highway, the road is the longest continuous roadway in the United States. It is not considered a major transcontinental route because Route 6 was gradually put together from other routes over time. But it still can get drivers from Massachusetts to California.
