(NO LIMIT) Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefit until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Thanks for the read.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE” CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District re-gion and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate pass-ing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reunit-ing and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a bar-beque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Satur-day night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

Road trips can make for great weekend getaways or even more lengthy vaca-tions for those who can’t get enough of the open road. But before embarking on any road trips, motorists should replenish their auto-motive emergency kits with the following items so they are fully prepared in the event of an accident or an injury.• First-aid kit: A fi rst-aid kit can treat cuts and abrasions suff ered while you are out of the car and even some mi-nor injuries that may result if you are in a car accident. Include essential items like adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, antiseptic wipes, aspirin, bandages, a cold compress, gauze, and scis-sors. Visit www.redcross.org for a more extensive list of items to include in your fi rst-aid kit, which should be kept in your car at all times.• Tools: It’s important to in-clude tools in your automo-tive emergency kit. While a full toolbox might be unnec-essary, bring along an ad-

justable wrench, a fl at head and Phillips screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a tire jack and crow bar, an ice scraper, and a fl ashlight. Extra roadside fl ares and refl ectors also should be packed should you need to pull over and address an automotive problem, such as a fl at tire. Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or with your other tools so you can check tire pressure if you feel your car is not operating as smoothly as it normally does.• Fluids: While it’s best to check all of your vehicle’s fl uids before beginning a road trip, it does not hurt to bring along some extra fl uids just in case you start to run low while out on the road. Fluids to pack include motor oil, antifreeze, brake fl uid, and windshield washer fl uid. Include a funnel with these items so you can easily pour them in should you be running low. Pack an empty spray bottle as well so you have something to spray washer fl uid from if a prob-

lem arises with your wiper blades.

• Wiper blades: Include an extra set of wiper blades in your automotive emer-gency kit. Maintaining wiper blades is an oft-overlooked component of vehicle main-tenance, so bring along an extra set of blades should your existing blades suc-cumb to wear and tear while you’re on the road.

• Miscellaneous items: Some items that may not seem synonymous with road trips can come in handy should you fi nd yourself in an emer-gency. Pack a blanket so you and your passengers can stay warm should your car break down at night. In ad-dition, pack some energy bars and bottled water so no one gets too hungry or thirsty while waiting for help to arrive. It’s also good to keep a pair of work gloves in your car so you can still use your tools or change a tire when the temperatures dip or your hands get sweaty on hot days.

Sudden car trouble is some-thing no driver wants to ex-perience, but many a driver has been driving down the highway only to feel his or her vehicle start to sputter. Such sputtering might in-

dicate a car is running low on fuel, or it could be a sign of something more serious that requires motorists to think as quickly and safely as possible.

When car trouble strikes

while a vehicle is on the road, the fi rst thing many drivers do is check their fuel gauges. A car that runs out of gas is certainly inconve-nient, but if you can pull over to the shoulder or make it to the nearest fi lling station, then this unfortunate situa-tion can be remedied rather easily. But when a car’s tank is full and it is still showing signs of trouble, drivers must take steps to protect them-selves, their passengers and their vehicles. The following are a few simple tips motor-ists should keep in mind so they can safely handle any car trouble that may arise while they are out on the road.

• Keep a fi rst-aid kit, spare tire and tire jack in the car at all times. Flat tires are no fun, but they are even more of a nuisance when drivers are not prepared to address them. Always keep a jack and spare tire in your car, even if the spare is a donut you can temporarily use to replace a fl at tire until you make it to a fi lling station or auto-motive supply store. As an added safety measure, keep a fully stocked fi rst aid kit in your vehicle in case you cut yourself while changing the tire or need to address an-other medical situation. Visit www.redcross.org for a list of items to include in your automotive emergency kit.

Keep a blanket in the trunk as well so your passengers can stay warm should you experience car trouble on a cold day or night.

• Make note of your sur-roundings. Some car trou-bles can only be fi xed by the professionals, so pay careful attention to your surround-ings in case an issue arises and forces you to pull over and call for help. Always pay attention to mile mark-ers and any landmarks that might help you describe where you are. Car troubles can strike at any time and anywhere, so be sure to pay special attention to your sur-roundings when driving in

unfamiliar areas.

• Pull over. Don’t panic if an issue arises suddenly. Re-main calm and pull over onto the shoulder. The right shoulder is the area for pull-ing over on most roads, but you may also use the left shoulder on multilane high-ways with medians. Try to get as far away from traffi c as possible without driving off of level ground, and al-ways use your signals when pulling onto the shoulder. If the vehicle can’t make it to the median, put your emer-gency fl ashers on and get out of the car, moving away from both the vehicle and traffi c. Immediately call for emergency roadside assis-tance, alerting the authori-ties if need be.

• Use fl ares or triangles to alert other drivers. So long as you are not risking your well-being, you can place fl ares and/or warning triangles be-hind your vehicle so oncom-ing traffi c knows to drive around it. The popular not-for-profi t motor club AAA recommends placing the fi rst fl are or triangle 10 feet directly behind the side of the vehicle that is closest to the road. The second should be placed between 30 and 60 feet (increase the distanc-es as the posted speed limit increases) behind the mid-dle of the bumper, while the third fl are or triangle should be placed between 120 and 360 feet behind the vehicle’s right side.

• Stay with the vehicle. Once you have called for help and set up fl ares or triangles, stay with the vehicle, though do so at a safe enough distance so you are not in harm’s way.

Sudden car troubles can be scary, but drivers who ap-proach such issues calmly and quickly can reduce their risk for accident or injury.

Leasing a vehicle makes more sense than buying for many drivers. Lease terms typically last no more than 36 months, allowing drivers to drive a diff erent, newer car every three years. In ad-dition, lease payments tend to be less than monthly pay-ments when fi nancing a ve-hicle, which makes driving a new car more aff ordable for buyers without much room in their monthly budgets.

But leasing can confuse or intimidate some drivers, especially those who have never leased before. Once drivers decide that leasing is their best option, there are some strategies they can employ to make leasing work for them.

• Make a lower down pay-ment. Low monthly pay-ments make leases very attractive to many drivers, but the low payments high-lighted in advertisements can overshadow the often signifi cant initial down pay-ments required when sign-ing a lease agreement. Those down payments, which can be several thousand dollars, make the low monthly pay-ments possible. But drivers may want to make a lower down payment and accept higher monthly payments, as doing so off ers more of a safety net should the car be stolen or wrecked. When a car is stolen or wrecked, les-sees likely won’t get a refund on their down payments. By accepting a higher monthly payment, drivers are pro-tecting themselves against theft or vehicle damage.

• Purchase gap insurance.

Gap insurance protects les-sees should their vehicles be stolen or wrecked before the leases expire. Insurance company payouts may cover the value of the car if it is sto-len or wrecked, but that fi g-ure may not equal what les-sees still owe per the terms of the lease. In such instanc-es, drivers have to come up with the diff erence on their own, unless they have gap insurance. Some lease con-tracts include gap insurance, while others do not. Confi rm if your contract does before signing your lease, and pur-chase gap insurance cover-age if it does not.

• Prioritize maintenance. While allowing a car to fall into disrepair is never a good

idea, it’s an especially poor decision if you are leasing a vehicle. Normal wear and tear may not incur any fees when you return the car once your lease expires, but damage or excessive wear and tear could cost you once you hand the keys back. Many leasing companies will assess the vehicle for lessees in the months or weeks be-fore the vehicle is slated to return, giving drivers time to fi x any issues before the lease expires. Take advan-tage of this option and be sure to address each issue mentioned in the inspec-tion report. Failing to do so could cost you a substantial amount of money.

• Don’t let your lease over-

stay its welcome. Especially lengthy leasing agreements could negate any savings drivers get through leas-ing. Lease terms that are 36 months or less are most ben-efi cial to drivers, as new ve-hicles likely won’t encounter any signifi cant maintenance issues during that period,

and any issues that do arise will likely be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Leasing a vehicle is a great option for many motorists, and there are several ways drivers can make leasing even more benefi cial to their bottom lines.
