In only a couple days we’ll have tucked February away for another year. Good riddance I say! We’ve endured another very cold winter and this time we’ve had a snowier than normal February. That’s actually a good thing since that blanket of snow keeps the bitter cold air from forcing the frost deep into the soil. It also prevent repeated freezing and thawing which heaves our shallow-rooted perennials form the ground. It looks like March may be running a little cooler than normal but it will still be much warmer that what we’ve endured for the last couple of months. With any luck at all, we’ll be able to get out into our yards in by the end of the month and start our early feedings of shrubs, trees, lawns and flowerbeds. But, what the heck with? Before we can actually get out there and feed anything, I’m going to explain a bit about fertilizer. Regular readers will have to bear with me on this. You’ve seen this before but you may benefit from a refresher too. The first step is to get a handle on those three mysterious numbers on all fertilizer bags. You have noticed them haven’t you? You may be familiar with 5-10-5; the most common vegetable food. By law, the numbers represent the percentage, BY WEIGHT of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) respectively. “WAIT A MINUTE” you say, “if the 5 the 10 and the 5 are percentages, they only add up to 20% of the bag.” I gotta tell you, you’re really on the ball. Guess what, the rest of the bag is filler! The filler is in there to “make the product easier to spread evenly without burning” as the manufacturers will tell you. This is all true but, the ability to adjust the amount of filler vs. nutrients is a device fertilizer producers can manipulate to make a lower food quality appear better than it is but, more about that later. Anyway, the first number, N, or nitrogen shows how much of the fertilizer is devoted to green, upward growth. The second number P, or phosphorus, shows how much is devoted to root growth and flower & fruit production. The last number K, or potassium is an overall building block that benefits all parts of the plant.
I know that many of you understand all this but I know that many more of you are buying fertilizer based on pretty packaging, celebrity endorsements or tarot cards.
Now that you know this you can walk around the garden center and impress your friends by saying things like, “No, no. You don’t want 10-6-4 for you perennial border. It has too much nitrogen. You need more phosphorus for roots and flowers.” Or, “Say Jason, your lawn is kind of sparse. Maybe you need a lawn food with more phosphorus to help it thicken up.”
While you’re there showing off, you’ll probably notice that each manufacturer has their own “secret formula” that they would like you to believe is better than all the rest. Since these products represent a multi-billion dollar business, you better believe that a lot of time and money has been spent to convince you that their product is better than the rest. Your ignorance of fertilizer products is crucial to their success. Pretty packages and celebrity endorsements are all designed to keep you from asking two key questions. First, WHAT IS THE FORMULA; 5-10-5, 10-6-4, 12-0-0? This I’ve already explained. Remember, these three numbers must, by law, appear on the bag. Often a manufacturer will brag about their formula. What you’ll never hear mentioned is how much their bag weighs. This information is also required to appear on the product but there are no rules that say how large it must appear. Until you know how much the bag weighs, you can’t possibly know what you’re buying. Remember that the three numbers represent the percentage, BY WEIGHT, of the three major nutrients. This means that a higher number on one fertilizer doesn’t necessarily mean that it has more of a nutrient than another product. In other words, the percentages are meaningless until you know what they are a percentage of. If someone asked you if you’d rather have 10% or 50%, you would naturally ask, “Of what?” 50% of $1 is certainly less than 10% of $10. So remember, when you’re looking at those three mysterious numbers, the real mystery is, “Where the heck did they hide the weight on this bag?” Until you find out, you have no way to figure out how much of the bag is filler and how much is actual nutrient. % X weight = what you are getting. While the E.P.A regulates WHAT may be put into these products, there are few rules for HOW CLEARLY the manufacturer explains this information. It’s all there on the package but it’s up to you to figure it out. The best thing to do is to get to know someone at your local garden center that does ”get it” and have him or her assist and educate you. Thanks for the read.

HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME IN 2015(NAPSI)—The American dream of homeownership may not be as hard to attain as manypeople seem to fear. A few intriguing facts and hints can help.
The FactsWhile existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtors’ an-nual Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of first-time buyers recentlyfell to its lowest level (33 percent) in nearly three decades. Many first-time buyers expe-rience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including difficulty saving for a downpayment and tight credit conditions.
The HintsConsider these tips:• Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can re-place the local knowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to first-time buyers as they navigate the complex home buying process.According to the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in thepast year began their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their homethrough an agent. Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they alsouse their unparalleled local market knowledge and resources to help close the deal forbuyers and sellers.• Meet with a lender to determine how much you can afford. Last year, the median pricea first-time buyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you don’t have thatamount of cash lying around. That’s why 95 percent of first-time buyers who bought ahome in the past year financed their purchase.Find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check yourcredit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount ofmoney you’re qualified to borrow at a specific interest rate. Don’t forget to consider theother costs of homeownership, such as taxes, insurance and utilities.• Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 percent of first-time buyers got a single-family home in the suburbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near publictransportation.Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Re-altor focus on the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who representsellers to zero in on homes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.Keep this advice in mind and you may soon find yourself waking up in the home of yourdreams.

FREE CAR CARE GUIDE FOR MOTORISTS(NAPSI)-When it comes to keeping your car running smoothly, one of the most importantpieces of equipment may not be under the hood but in the glove compartment.
Free Auto GuideThat’s because that’s the place to put the totally redesigned “Car Care Guide” from thenonprofit Car Care Council. The 80-page guide uses easy-to-understand, everyday lan-guage rather than technical automotive jargon and covers the most common preventivemaintenance occasions and procedures that should be performed to keep cars safe, de-pendable and efficient. It also includes descriptions of major vehicle systems and parts, and a list of questions to ask about maintenance or repair procedures. A car care check-list reminds motorists what vehicle systems need to be maintained and when serviceshould be performed.
Twenty additional pages provide new information on finding an automotive repair shop, alternative fuels, understanding the warranty, vehicle telematics, and careers in the autocare industry, and include an expanded environmental awareness section.

KIDZ WORLD MOVES TO NEWLY RENOVATED DOWNTOWN LOCATION - NEW FACILITY REOPENS MARCH 2 WITH OPEN ENROLLMENT. OPEN HOUSES, RIBBON CUTTING PLANNED
GLENS FALLS — Daycare center It's A Kidz World, LLC, moves to a newly renovatedbuilding in the heart of downtown Glens Falls at 86 South Street on March 2. Formerlysituated in the Union Square plaza and owned by developer Tom O'Neill and his wifeAudrey, the brand new facility is designed specially for the purpose of childcare. The project started two years ago when Mr. O’Neill purchased the former Goodall’s
building, which dates back to 1890. “We wanted to transform the neighborhood, and Ifelt this building would be a perfect location for a daycare center,” he says. “The buildingwas originally 2 separate buildings, with a few additions. The oldest was a wood framedbuilding that was built more than 125 years ago. A brick bakery was built next to thatbuilding around 1915. In the 1930’s or 40’s, a breezeway was added to connect the twobuildings. All that, teamed with an adjacent empty lot on School Street that was perfectfor employee parking and our private playground, made it a clear choice for our move.”The central location of the foyer allows parents to view the classrooms and watch theirchildren interact with the teachers and with their peers, and allows Center Director Brit-tany Petteys to oversee and interact with the teachers and students. The fresh paletteused in the building's color scheme was developed by Mr. O'Neill, inspired by oceanviews on a recent beachside vacation. There is a private fenced-in playground to be fin-ished with blacktop, grass and picnic tables in the spring.“I believe that it is very important to have a strong staff that works well together to suc-ceed in child care,” says Ms. Petteys, who has a Master's Degree in Teacher Leadership.“Following our move, I am introducing an in-depth preschool curriculum that will prepareour preschool age children for Kindergarten.”“One of our most common questions parents ask is whether we are MAT certified, whichmeans we can administer medication,” adds Ms. Petteys. “We are one of the few daycarecenters in the area that is certified. Parents also like to ask about turnaround with ourstaff. We've got a great retention rate, and some of our teachers have been workinghere for 12 years, and I've been here since the first year the business opened as It's AKidz World.”She adds, “We love being downtown, taking the students for walks along Glen and
Ridge Streets downtown, taking field trips to the library, and riding the trolley. We havea music program with guitarist Neal Herr of Glens Falls Farmer's Market fame, and aplay-based curriculum.”“Our new 52-child facility is only one block from the hospital, making it very convenientfor parents working at the hospital to pick up or check on their children during the day,”says Mrs. O'Neill. “We chose this location due to its close proximity to Travelers andother businesses located in downtown Glens Falls. There is great parking for easy drop-off and pick up.”Kidz World is currently accepting new enrollments. Daycare hours are 6:30 a.m. to 6:00p.m. Open houses are scheduled for Friday, March 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. andSaturday,March 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. Tours are free and open to the public. Parents are en-couraged to bring their children to tour the facility, and the general public is invited.A grand reopening and ribbon cutting with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Com-merce is to be announced. For more information about Kidz World, or to schedule a free private tour, please contactMs. Petteys at [email protected] or call (518) 798-8820.
