BURKINA FASO & the UNICEF/U.S. FUNDSCHOOLS FOR AFRICA PROJECT

Burkina Faso was added to the Schools for Africa project in September of 2009 as Phase II of the project started. It hasone of the lowest GDP per capita in the world. In largepart, the economic activity of the country is funded byinternational aid.

Education in Burkina Faso is at three levels: primary, secondary, and higher education. The cost for schools isapproximately $97 USD per year. This is far above themeans of most families. Boys receive preference inschooling. An effort to increase girls’ schooling has beenobserved due to government policy and scholarship. TheUnited Nations Development Program Report ranksBurkina Faso as the country with the lowest level of literacyin the world (see figures above). Women are makinga difference by embracing new occupations that bettertheir lives and those of their children.
