Browsing through my club app on my iPhone, I see that Jack Barber, Michael Bembenick and our new assistant, Heather Warthen, went to the PGA merchandise show last month in Florida. I look forward to hearing about the show and seeing some of the new fashions and merchandise in our pro shop this season. We continue to have one of the greatest professional staffs in the country and they are hard at work preparing to make 2013 a great golf season.

The other point I really want to make is that the Club App has been downloaded by over 150 members and is a great way to keep up on dining room specials, golf events, paddle updates and all things Meridian Hills. In addition, there is a VIP link that allows you to access service within the club immediately when you input your request. This is a great way for members to get the service they need without having to search for staff to assist them. If you haven’t downloaded the application on your smart phone, I would encourage you to do so.

As another point of communication, I would like to call your attention to the informational letter and brochure sent to each of you in your February billing statement. Our member, Dr. Wade Rademacher, is currently a director of the Western Golf Association. He is a tireless worker for the game of golf and the many excellent programs that the Western Golf Association supports. We are honored to host the Western Junior Golf Championships June 17-21 at Meridian Hills this year. I would encourage all members to consider supporting the WGA at the Par member level or greater. This would be a great way to welcome the tournament and to underscore our commitment to the game of golf at Meridian Hills.

Lastly, the winter weather is still upon us and the club is open for winter sports. The ice rink at last check was frozen and the course is open for cross country skiing. When you add in Paddle Tennis and a great dining facility, there are plenty of reasons to come to the club in February. As always, I look forward to seeing you there.

Donald Wayne Newsom, 75, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on January 24, 2013. He was born on January 30, 1937 in Worthington, Indiana.

Donny worked for Meridian Hills Country Club in the Grounds Department. All of Donny’s coworkers knew him to never have a bad word to say. Donny worked dedicatedly for 43 years at MHCC and retired in 2009. Donny was a

bowler and a card player.

Have you heard anyone say “There’s an App for that?” Actually Apple has filed a trademark application for the company’s now ubiquitous catchphrase. You can now say that about Meridian Hills, our club has an app for your iPhone or Android smartphone for just $.99. The app will enhance your membership experience.

Don’t forget Valentine’s Day. Make reservations with your “special sweetheart” and enjoy dinner with champagne and Harpist, Jill Pitz. The Kids Club will be open from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Chef Joe is offering cooking classes on February 19th or 22nd from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Please call 317.255.2496 for reservations.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

As winter time is upon us, activities at the club are just that, active! The ice skating rink was recently frozen and I witnessed father and son practicing hockey, father and daughter ice skating and a group of kids playing after dinner. Paddle tennis goes on no matter the weather! Groups were playing when it was 10 to 15 below zero! And I’m told there were some skiers cross country skiing on the course when we had snow. The indoor hitting nets are being used, the fitness center is heavily used and the dining rooms have not experienced the normal ‘slow down’ this time of year. The Club app has been downloaded by many of you. We expect this communication method will be a convenient and popular means for information on club activities and service to you.

Please welcome our new Catering Coordinator, Lee Johnson. Lee has an experienced career in hospitality management and catering. A graduate of Miami University of Ohio with a degree in communications and marketing, Lee started work after school at the Drake Hotel; working front desk, corporate reservations and as an assistant manager. She then moved to Indianapolis and was the regional sales manager for Chair Covers and Linens for 7 years and was also Catering Sales Manager at Kahn’s Catering. She is a member of the International Special Events Society serving on their Board and has won Pace Awards for events and has been a speaker at the ISES National Conference. Please welcome Lee as we look forward to the experience and expertise she brings to our catering department.
