DIAT develops medical bedisolation system for covid-19

patients named as "AASHRAY"In the current pandemic, due to continuous increase

of COVID-19 positive patients, the requirement

of number of beds are increasing day by day.

Defence Institute ofAdvanced Technology,(DIAT) a Deemed to beUniversity, Pune hasdeveloped Aashray(?????), the MedicalBed Isolation Systemto combat COVID-19by stopping/ minimiz-ing the spread ofvirus/ infectionreleased by thepatient. This is a lowcost, reusable solutionto maintain properisolation of COVID-19patients by creatingsuction /negativepressure near exhale, and further filteringand disinfecting theaerosol.

Bed IsolationSystem envelopes aremade up of specializedmaterial and manu-facturing process with

transparent andtranslucent 7.5(l)×7(w) ×6.5(h) ft3 sizesupported on medicalgrade materialsstructure. The productis modular and porta-ble in design and canbe suitable for differentrequirements such asinstitutional, hospitalsand home/ individualquarantine. Theenvelope is reusable asit is antibacterial-antifungal and can besanitized.

Each envelope iscapable of housing oneset of bed, table andchair along with somewalking space. Thewidth of the envelopecan be adjusted as perthe availability ofspace. Envelope isopaque up to 3 ft frombottom to maintainprivacy of the patient.

The entire envelopeis maintained at a lowpressure (suction) withadjustable flow rate torestrain spread ofvirus/ infection insidethe hall/ ICU. Eachenvelope is connected

to the main ductequipped with UVlight and filter circuitof Pre, fine and HEPAfilter (recommendedfor medical applica-tion) and suctionblower. CrossFit MyDen: How businesses arecollapsing in silence under lockdown

By Arun Kumar Shrivastav

CrossFit MyDen isthe only Crossfit Affili-ated Box (gym) in NaviMumbai out of the15,000 such personalfitness centres underthe CrossFit brand inover 150 countries. From 13 branches in2005 to 13,000 branch-es in 2016, CrossFitsymbolizes the power ofAmerican businessesand brands.

But COVID-19 hasfrustrated the brandand its glorious march.Closed for the past 4-5months due to lock-down, the Navi Mum-bai center of CrossFit,MyDen is an example ofhow businesses are suf-fering and succumbingin the face of COVID-19and lockdown.

“For the last 4-5months, we haven’thad any revenue. Evenwhen the lockdown islifted, we are not surehow long it will take forthe business to achievepre-COVID levels,” saysManoj Kumbhar, thehead coach with Cross-Fit Level 3 certification. This credential is forthe experienced Coach-es who demonstrate ahigher level of CrossFitcoaching knowledgeand ability and only 1%holds this credentialAmong CrossFit Train-ers around the globe

We have tried onlinetraining to our mem-bers but that just doesnot seem to be clicking. There are so many fit-ness coaches available

online -- from athlete-turned fitness coachesto celebrity-tunedcoaches, and actor-turned coaches, and soon, that we profession-al coaches with a full-time fitness coachingcareer hardly stand achance, Manoj burststhe online bubble.

But his reflectionsare more about Indianclients. I have workedas a fitness trainerabroad and even nowhave an online batch offoreign fitness enthusi-asts. It’s easier to wintheir confidence if youknow the job and havethe right credentials,he says.

Here, even doctorsare offering online fit-ness coaching for differ-ent purposes -- fromhearts’ health to supe-rior performance in ath-letics, he says, talkingabout the anomaly ofthe online fitness coach-ing.

A CrossFit affiliaterequires a minimum of$30,000 investmentapart from the salariesand rent.

“The business mod-el of CrossFit is differ-ent from normal gyms.First, we need a largerspace. Then, we trainin groups and batches, not individuals. Train-ers have a more directrole in our training aswe don’t use heavyworkout equipmentsuch as treadmills.”Manoj explains howCrossFit Myden is notyour ordinary gym.

People like to trainand workout in a group. It’s more inviting, ex-citing, motivating, andpractical than workingout solo with a machine.CrossFit High Intensi-ty Functional Move-ments such as Run-ning, swimming, Cy-cling, Skipping, Gym-nastics, Oly & Weight-lifting Movements areused for Metabolic con-ditioning.

So, it does not looklike working out in agym. Rather, it is moreof a functional move-ment like running orweight lifting per-formed at high-intensi-ty. It offers effectiveworkout and calorie-burning that trans-lates into higher levelsof fitness and energy.

It’s an irony that thefounder of multi-billiondollar CrossFit fitnesschain Greg Glassmanwho opened the first boxin Santa Cruz Califor-nia in 2000 sold thecompany to an Ameri-can affiliate and washedhis hands off this phe-nomenal brand at atime when COVID-19has posed the biggestchallenge to its busi-ness model. All India Radio cele-brated its 88th anniver-sary. Very few peoplewill remember listeningto this tune of 5.55minutes in the morn-ing 88 years ago. Theman who created thishistoric tune wasWalter Kaufmann fromGermany. Though ra-dio broadcasting beganin the country in 1930,the name All India Ra-dio was formally adopt-ed in June, 1936. Ini-tially, AIR had six sta-tions in Kolkata, Delhi,Mumbai, Chennai,Tiruchirappali and Luc-know. Of course, we cannever forget the morn-ing music tune and theMangal Prabhat whichfollows immediately.

AIR’s presence in acompetitive marketdominated by commer-cial radio is proof of thehigh quality of its pro-gramming and techni-cal expertise. “Thoughwe had a very simplebeginning, we have keptabreast of the times byupdating our technolo-gy constantly. All thechanges were put intoplace simultaneously sothat they would be tech-nically compatible forother centres using ourprogrammes. I still re-member our dad wak-ing us up switching onthe Radio making ushear this famous tuneand that helped us to getready for school ontime.

AIR is now usingonly digital recordings. The CDs that are stillbeing used will be soonput into storage. The G-Sat satellites launched

All India Radio

by Indian Space Re-search Organisation(ISRO) have helped AIRto link up to transpon-ders. In the analoguesystem, we had onlyMedium Wave, ShortWave and FrequencyModulation stationsthat could not bestreamed on mobilephones. This haschanged after all ourstations have gone dig-ital with the help of pro-prietary Americantransmitters.

Technological ad-vancements are evident

in other spheres too. While programmeswere once networked bysmaller centres toMetro city studios, AIRstations across thecountry can now up-link or downlink by-passing the bigger cen-tres, with the help of adigital ‘active earth’station. Enamoured oftelevision, media-watchers in the 1940sand ’50s confidentlyprophesied the immi-nent death of radio. Themedium, they said, couldn’t match thethrill of seeing movingpictures in the comfortof the living room.

The advent of rock-and-roll, embodying therebellion of an entiregeneration of youthagainst the conserva-tism of the precedingdecades, left a bigger fol-lowing for radio thanbefore and proved thepredictions of the doom-sayers wrong. In thedecades since, radio hasemerged as the ulti-mate survivor, adapt-ing itself to the tastesof the newer genera-tions of listeners andabsorbing newer tech-nologies. In the 1980sand ’90s, it saw offthreats posed by per-sonal video recordersand digital compactdiscs through a great-er emphasis on listen-er-driven programmes.By the late ‘90s and ear-ly 2000s, radio stationswere reinventing them-selves to cater to nicheaudiences: There werestations dedicated tospecific genres of con-tent — talk radio, punkrock stations, even sta-tions that played musicby a single band 24hours a day — antici-pating the emergence ofSpotify and iTunes by adecade or more. Hence,to paraphrase MarkTwain, the reports ofradio’s death are great-ly exaggerated.

If you think All In-dia Radio has no listen-ers, think again. At atime when private FMchannels are giving atough competition, theassured listenership ofAIR has come as a realsurprise. As a graduatefrom Madras, I receivedan interview call fromAll India Radio for thepost of English NewsReader in the year 1971.Fifty years have passedand the AIR has takena leap in the radio worldand is going strong. The writer is a freelancerfrom Sanpada, Navi Mum-bai

English historianThomas Fuller said“Health is not valuedtill sickness comes”.Unfortunately, this istrue today. Our busylifestyles have made usignorant towards ourhealth and more so to-wards oral health.

Hormones arechemicals within ourbody which help to reg-ulate different bodyprocesses. A hormonalimbalance can triggerlot of body issues likefluctuations in bodyweight, blood pressure, metabolic disorders, etc. But how do thesehormones affect oralhealth? Read on…

THYROID HOR-MONES: Thyroxine (T4)and Tri-iodothyronine(T3) hormones closelyregulate the metabo-lism within the body.Deficiency of T3 and T4hormones (hypothy-roidism) can cause en-larged tongue, delayederuption of teeth andalso destruction of thegum tissues present-ing as red and bleedinggums. An increase inthe thyroid hormonelevels (hyperthyroid-ism) can lead to a feel-ing of burning sensa-tion within the mouth.

PARATHYROID HOR-MONE: Parathyroidgland releases the par-athyroid hormonewhich maintains thecalcium levels in theblood. It does so by de-pleting the bones ofcalcium and puttingthat calcium in theblood. An increase inthis hormone can leadto weakness of thebones. In the mouth itcan present as loss ofbone leading to mobileteeth.

CORTISOL: Stresscan be physical, psy-chological or emotion-al. Disturbed sleep, clenching the teeth,

Hormones and oral healthvigorous brushing indi-cates a stressful life-style. Stress causes re-lease of cortisol from theadrenal gland which re-duces immune functionsof the body. It also induc-es destructive cellswhich breakdown thegum tissues making theteeth mobile over time.

INSULIN: Decreasedlevels of insulin or de-creased sensitivity to in-sulin as in Diabetes Mel-litus can cause destruc-tion of the gum tissuesand loss of bone whichleads to periodontitis (in-flammation of the gumsand bone around theteeth). Subsequent in-crease in blood sugar lev-

els also causes increasedbacterial growth causinginfections and delayedwound healing followingtreatment.

SEX HORMONES: Fe-male sex hormones arenot only responsible forgrowth of female sexualcharacteristics but alsofor ovulation. Receptorsfor these hormones arealso present within theoral cavity. Increase intheir levels during men-struation can cause thin-ning of the gums, in-creased redness andbleeding from the gumswhich may be transient.

During pregnancy, asurge in progesteronelevels also leads to red-ness of the gums andweakened response to-wards bacterial infec-tions. There may be anoccasional gum swellingwhich may appear dur-ing pregnancy. Theseusually subside postpartum but if not can betreated. Many wonder ifdental treatments aresafe during pregnancy.YES! Dental treatmentscan be taken up safelyduring pregnancy.

While the second tri-mester is the safest fordental treatments, certain emergencyprocedures can be car-ried out with adequateprecautions duringthe first and third tri-mesters as well. Stud-ies have shown thatinadequate oral hy-giene practices duringpregnancy can lead topre-term deliveriesand low birth weightamong infants.Hence, it is extreme-ly vital for expectingmothers to get a den-tal check up duringinitial phases of preg-nancy so as to avoidany dental emergencyduring later phases.

In Post menopaus-al women, reducedlevels of estrogen de-grade bone quality.Bone becomes os-teoporotic due to in-creased activity of os-teoclast cells whichdissolve the bone notonly in the body butalso in the jaws.Hence, dentures maybecome loose due tobone loss and loosen-ing of teeth within thejaw may be a commoncomplaint. However, hormone replacementtherapy has shown toimprove bone qualityand reduce chances ofosteoporosis in postmenopausal females.

Use of contracep-tive medications bywomen alters the hor-mone levels by reduc-ing estrogen andprogesterone levelswithin the body whichcould cause complica-tions following dentaltreatments like ex-tractions.

While dental treat-ments can be doneroutinely in presenceof a hormonal condi-tion, it is eye openingto know that underly-ing hormonal imbal-ance can also affectoral health and treat-ment outcomes nega-tively. Hence, a visit tothe dentist every sixmonths can help usmonitor not only ouroral health but alsoour overall health!

Useful wasteOnly few decades back, the people were learning to manage

resources and today we are already late for learning to manage thewaste. Huge quantities of waste are being generated in urban lifestyle, which has a different consumption and waste generation pat-tern from that of the rural areas. For a city like Navi Mumbai andMumbai, the management of wastes has assumed unmanageableproportions due to large quantities of waste generated and limitedavenues for disposal. So it becomes all the more imperative totreat the waste and re-cycle it for re use.

As one approaches Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai one is greeted byhuge dumps of garbage, polythene bags and other untreated wastelying close to the railway lines and areas inhabited by the slums. Inspite of all the information and cue available from the experiencesof other mega polices in the world, Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai couldnot take the required steps for waste management timely. NaviMumbai which was conceived as a planned, clean city also couldnot capitalize on the experiences available from Mumbai and ittoo went the Mumbai way and here also one can find huge dumpsof garbage emanating foul smell, polluting the environment andswarms of flies acting as carriers of diseases.

It is quite surprising to note that the concept of waste manage-ment was given thought quite earlier at the time of formation ofthe city and policies were formulated in this regard but again likeother policies, these too, were lost sight of mid way. The conceptof dry and wet waste segregation, sewage treatment plan and uti-lizing its effluent for horticulture and other non domestic purpos-es, treatment of bio-degradable waste through vermiculture andincinerators is already existing and was being practiced but notvery earnestly. Now with the aim of implementing these policies ofwaste management effectively the NMMC has come out with pe-nal action for violation of norms in this regard. Likewise, strictaction should be taken against the illegal dumping of constructiondebris. It is for NMMC to reflect its seriousness as regards theimplementation of its various policies and should educate and bringawareness amongst the residents towards the benefits of adher-ing to these waste management policies in larger goal of environ-mental pollution control, apart from saving depleting resourcesand saving on waste disposal cost.

Letter to the Editor....

Newsband EffectOn behalf of the citizens of Navi Mumbai as

well as the students, I would like to thank you foryour Column ‘Navi Mumbai Speak’ – throughwhich you raise questions of public importance andpublish the views thereof in your esteemed News-paper. This column has become very popular and I congratulate you andyour team of journalists, especially Mr Chandrasekhar for his excellentjournalistic skills and abilities and for reaching out to the people of NaviMumbai.

One such Question which was raised in your Newsband Edition dated23.06.2020 was the views on the Online Classes for School Children. Thiswas a very important issue as the Government Administration had justallowed Schools, Colleges, Classes to start their classes online. While thisdecision of the government was taken in Public Interest, it seems no deepstudy was made before its announcement. Hence the Question raised byyour Popular Navi Mumbai Newspaper was very significant and a rightstep in the direction as the popular views could have given some solutionsfor the Government Administration in the direction.

Along with six other co-panelists, I, as a social worker and a keenfollower of the education system had also expressed my detailed opinion inthis regard. Among the various other issues I had said “Education is im-portant but life is more important than that. We need to understand thenecessity of Online education. Is it that necessary? The questions beforeus are ...if the time allotted to an academic year is now insufficient tocomplete the entire portion. Is it necessary to teach the entire portion. Can the education department reduce the portion to coincide with theavailable time for this academic year.”

Sir, I am pleased to inform you that my above suggestion and theviews carried out by your esteemed Newspaper has succeeded in reachingto the top sources in the Government Administration. Acting on yourNews, The Maharashtra Government on Saturday i.e. 25th July 2020announced that syllabus for Classes 1 to 12 will be reduced by 25% so asto reduce the burden on students amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said details of which les-sons from textbooks have been omitted will be uploaded on the website ofthe Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research & Training(MSCERT). Since schools have not reopened physically, the governmentwants to ease the burden on students , so the syllabus will be reduced by25 per cent for the academic year 2020-21, she said in a statement.

Therefore the Education Ministry implementing the views raised byNewsband further confirms the importance of the Press and Journalists.I once again compliment your Newspaper Newsband and its entire man-agement for your responsible journalism and for being vigilant to theneeds and problems of the Citizens and society and taking up their causeboldly. I request you to continue the good work that you are doing for thecause of the Nation and the Citizens. On behalf of the entire citizens ofNavi Mumbai I once again congratulate you and wish you all success inyour future endeavours.

Coronavirus ---A highly contagious disease

Coronavirus is highly contagious disease and it spreads quickly fromperson to person. No other disease before this has been known to spreadat such a fast rate as the novel Coronavirus. To make things worse, no cure for the diseasehas yet been found. There is no option otherthan to treat the affected person symptomat-ically; however, the final recovery dependsmainly on an individual's stamina and im-munity.

From the perspective of this scenario, thelockdown seems to be the only practical andeffective solution to prevent the spread of thedisease. Social distancing is a measure im-posed by the lockdown. People are advised notto socialise during the duration of the lockdown, which is for their ownbenefit. The lesser they socialise, the thinner will be their chances ofgetting infected. Hence taking precautions at the earliest is better thangetting the disease and regretting about it later.

Highlighting the keystone nature of the tiger,a poster on presence of small cats was also re-leased by the Environment Minister. With thepresence of nearly 30 percent of India’s tigers out-side tiger reserves, India had embarked upon as-sessing management interventions through theglobally developed Conservation Assured | TigerStandards (CA|TS) framework, which will nowbe extended to all fifty tiger reserves across thecountry.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State ofEnvironment, Shri Babul Supriyo said, human-animal conflict can be avoided but it cannot beruled out in the country. He said, frontline offi-cials have done commendable job in raising thenumbers of tiger in the country.

The detailed report of the 4th All India TigerEstimation is unique in the following ways;

• Abundance index of co-predators and otherspecies has been carried out which hitherto was

restricted only to occupancy• Sex ratio of tigers in all camera trap sites

has been carried out for the first time.• Anthropogenic effects on tiger population have

been elaborated in a detailed manner.• Tiger abundance within pockets in tiger re-

serves has been demonstrated for the first time. The Heads of the Governments of Tiger Range

countries at St. Petersburg, Russia, had resolvedto double tiger numbers across their global rangeby 2022 by signing the St. Petersburg declarationon tiger conservation. During the said meeting itwas also decided to celebrate July 29 as GlobalTiger Day across the world, which is since, beingcelebrated to spread and generate awareness ontiger conservation.

During Global Tiger Day 2019, it was a proudmoment for India as the Prime Minister declaredto the world fulfilment of India’s resolve as it haddoubled its tiger numbers four years in advanceto the target year highlighting resolute action tak-en by all concerned. India’s tiger population nowstands at 2967 which is 70 percent of the globaltiger population. A feather in India’s cap was add-

ed with the Guinness World Records recognizingthe country’s efforts as the world largest cameratrap survey of wildlife.

The detailed report released today assesses thestatus of tigers in terms of spatial occupancy anddensity of individual populations across India. Inaddition to the summary report released by thePrime Minister of India on the "Status of Tigersin India" in July 2019, this detailed report com-pares information obtained from the earlier threesurveys (2006, 2010, and 2014) with data obtainedfrom the 2018-19 survey to estimate populationtrends at country and landscape scales, patch col-onization and extinction rates along with infor-mation on likely factors responsible for changesin tiger status at the fine spatial resolution of 100km.

The report evaluates the status of habitat cor-ridors connecting major tiger populations andhighlights vulnerable areas that require conser-vation attention for each landscape. The reportprovides information on major carnivores andungulates regarding their distribution and rela-tive abundance.
