Absurd ClaimsChina is intoxicated with power and its pow-

er has thickened into arrogance and chutzpah. All its territorial claims against India and othercountries are absurd and ridiculous. At this rateChina will say that the Moon belongs to it as ithas been celebrating the Lunar New Year for-getting the fact that its own neighbors includ-ing India have been following Lunar Calendarfrom time immemorial. Factually speaking, even Tibet does not belong to China since Tibet-ans have their own unique identity, culture andethos. It is time for the UN to expel China fromits membership and all countries to take puni-tive actions to contain this monster for its hor-rendous crimes against humanity.

The system of education and training is a result ofhard work and experience of more than 50 years. Howcan a new system of online classes which has not beentested be expected to give a desired result? Smart phonehas its own limitations and to use it for a serious busi-ness such as study is difficult. The concept of books andphysical teaching is something every student is used toand suddenly replacing it with online classes is a disas-trous. For teachers too this is a new experience and they have to get usedto shift from physical teaching to online teaching. All teachers may not becapable of this shift. This decision will prove to be unviable for the stu-dents and should not be undertaken. Any other options if available shouldbe researched.

Yash Reddy, College Student

NAVI MUMBAIKARS SPEAK Your views on the online classes for school children?

If we talk in context of online classes conducted byschools amid lockdown then there is still a lot of dis-parity as most of the parents cannot afford to haveseparate laptops for their child, more so if they havetwo children. Also, the worst part is if either or bothparents have to work from home. Then the solutioncould be mobile, which again allows a child to takeclasses for around 3+ hrs staring at the tiny screen.

So ok , start online classes, make it compulsory for all students, makemarking attendance compulsory. Fine education needs to go on. But,please consider the negative impact too. On the positive side onlinelearning is currently exciting for the students but may soon lose itscharm if they are overloaded with content and if too much time bound. So the need is to design a proper structure and schedule keeping inmind the age of the child, proper timings etc. Also as of now focusshould be on the important content to be taught. The textbook shouldnot be blindly followed, rather have a more practical approach. It shouldnot be that teachers just aim and need to finish syllabus but the top-ics should be segregated. Another major problem is of the hackersentering online classrooms, sharing screen with objectionable materi-al and vulgar text. That is more so because not all students and teach-ers are so tech savvy as to follow and implement all safety protocols. They need time and training to understand the working. The govern-ment should set effective guidelines, should take strict measures andshould make it compulsory for schools to use premium, paid and se-cure software.

Adv. Varun Vij, Lawyer, Bombay High Court, Ulwe

QUESTION FOR NEXT WEEK : Your views on promoting indigenous goods?

Virtual classroom or online classes can never replaceor take the place of physical teaching. Online classeshave their own drawback like the limitations on know-ing the grasping of the students. Online classes for pri-mary school students is virtually a failure as these schoolsare to be counselled regularly during teaching to get theirattention. It is virtually difficult to keep the studentsattention during online classes. It is also important to

make the students note important syllabus and this will be difficult dur-ing online classes. Online classes under no circumstances can replace thephysical teaching systems atleast for school students. Many students re-quire special attention which will not be possible during the online class-es. While we may begin with online classes, it will be necessary to retakethe portions covered under online systems later during the academic year.

Mrs Sunita Ramakrishna, School Teacher, Nerul

Online classes are not the way our education systemwork. School teaching is the best. But corona pandemicforced all of us to live & work life in unnatural way. Andonline classes are one of the products of this new way oflife. One of the major concerns in online classes is theeyes of the young students getting badly affected. Al-ready excessive TV, mobile computer viewing is there &this online classes will further deteriorate the situation.Where laptop or computer or ipad are not available or can’t afford, a smallscreen mobile will have worst possible strain on eyes, from bad to worse.Wearing anti glare specs will minimise the eye damage. Short time, say 2to 3 months of online classes or ok to save precious years of study butlonger duration needs alternative thinking on other various options. Highlevel government experts committees can work on probable effective solu-tions without side effects. Also intermittent internet connections failurecan create further complication like students missing classes in parts orfull, there by continuity loss. Here personal coaching by private tuitionteachers including parents can do wonders by teaching & preparing stu-dents for school exams, where online classes can be minimised. Even outof box thinking like three years study in 2 years with fewer holidays etc &year loss if any can be saved. It is workable.

Vinod Trivedi, Chairman, Progressive Group, Vashi

Education is important but life is more importantthan that. We need to understand the necessity of On-line education. Is it that necessary. The questions beforeus are: is the time allotted to an academic year nowinsufficient to complete the entire portion. Is it neces-sary to teach the entire portion? Can the education de-partment reduce the portion to coincide with the avail-able time for this academic year? Can we not skip thevacation and compensate for the time lost to Covid 19? If the answer isthat starting school is the only purpose of completing the portion andexamination on time then we come to the topic of Online classes. I strong-ly feel in the interest of equality online classes should not be held. Is everystudent or his parent equipped with a smart phone with enough datapack. If no , then some may have access to online classes while some maynot and some may have to compromise on their other needy requirementsto afford a smartphone and a data pack.

Online teaching will require students to sit in a unhealthy posture fora long time with no access to natural light and this is likely to causehealth issues to them. The government administration should think moreabout the students future rather than the commercial interests of theschool management. The results of this decision to conduct online classesmay not come at the end of the academic year but later life of the stu-dents.

Lion Dr Pratap Mudaliar, Social worker, Vashi

As per the current pandemic situation online classesfor the students is a good idea for initiating & introduc-ing the academic course but as per the class category.

For students above 8th class division can process theonline lectures but for below 7th class grade it is a bitdifficult to process. Making online class mandatory forall class grade is very unethical. Parents have to makenecessary technical gadgets like mobile , laptop, com-

puters, available for the children can face certain issuesBut then what can be conducted for classes below 7th grade is a big

question?Vidya Aaman Mitter, Vashi

While schools across the country are closed on ac-count of the lockdown, it should not be treated as a vaca-tion, but instead parents and children should use onlinelearning tools as opportunities to brush up their skillsso that they are not at a disadvantage when the schoolsreopen. In any case, with there being intense competi-tion and pressure on the young ones to excel in academ-ics, as well as in various kinds of extra-curricular activ-ities, from a tender age, even the children’s holidays (in

normal circumstances) are generally spent learning to dance, sing, play amusical instrument or a sport or some such activity that has, of late, emerged as a great career option for the future as well.

Wear helmet and mask;protect your life

It is alarming to note that over 5,000 people were killed inMaharashtra last year for not wearing helmet. In addition, morethan 600 motorists and over 1,000 co-travellers died for not wear-ing seat belts last year. What is even more disturbing s the factthat the state is among the top five in India to have the highestroad fatalities.

While we are all aware how important it is to follow traffic ruleswhich have been framed for our own safety, most of us tend tohave a casual attitude towards this. It has become a habit to fol-low rules and regulations only if there is strict and stringent im-plementation of rules by the government. The general excusefor not wearing helmets are: It is uncomfortable and hot; it messesup my hair; I am only going a short distance etc. etc.

According to reports, injuries to the head and neck are themain cause of death, severe injury and disability among users ofmotorcycles and bicycles. Globally, there is an upward trend inthe number and use of motorcycles and bicycles, both for trans-port and recreational purposes. This is being accompanied by aconsiderable increase in the number of head injuries and fatali-ties that will only continue to increase if present trends continueunchecked.

Trauma to the brain can occur as a result of an impact, whichcan cause a concussion or open skull fracture, or a jarring mo-tion, such as a quick turn or sudden stop. Even seemingly mildhead injuries, where you don't lose consciousness, can cause per-manent behavioural and cognitive problems, such as memoryloss, inability to concentrate, sleep disorders and, in some cas-es, permanent disability or death.

Studies have shown that wearing a helmet can reduce the riskof a serious brain injury and death because during a fall or colli-sion, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the helmet, rath-er than your head and brain. However, just as important as wear-ing a helmet is, it is equally important to wear the right helmet. Ahelmet that doesn't fit properly or offer sufficient cushioning cangive you a false sense of security while not actually providing thelevel of protection you need. Along with the riders, the pillionriders, irrespective of age, too should wear helmets.

It is unfortunate that compliance to traffic safety rules is linkedto enforcement on the ground by the police. With limited man-power, it is really impossible for the traffic officials to be presentat all the place at all the time. Moreover, it should be understoodthat laws are made to save people from potential threat. Withouta helmet the ride may sound thrilling, but it is not safe. Riding abike without a helmet does not just jeopardise the rider’s life, but that of the others’ as well. It is time that each one of us rea-lise the importance of abiding by traffic rules and protect not onlyour lives but that of the others. Further, in view of the Coronapandemic, it is equally essential that we wear face mask and pro-tect not only ourselves but others as well.

MUMBAI: The three-month consolidated electric-ity bill for the months of April, May, and Junethrough the computerized billing system aftertaking direct readings of electricity consumptionduring the lockdown period is correct and accu-rate. It does not have any additional charges. Therefore, consumers should not have any confu-sion about electricity bills and should not rush tothe offices for electricity bill corrections againstthe backdrop of coronavirus, an appeal has beenmade by MSEDCL.

Meanwhile, MSEDCL has provided a speciallink https://billcal.mahadiscom.in/consumerbill/for consumers to get information on two to threemonths consolidated electricity bill as well as com-plete verification of slab benefits, adjustment ofamount paid, monthly electricity usage and slab-like tariffs. The complete calculation of electricitybill and the analysis of electricity bill done byMSEDCL is available to the customers throughthis link only by giving the customer number.

MSEDCL had shut down meter reading, elec-tricity bill distribution, and bill payment centresin the state on March 23 due to the coronavirus.Due to the closure of readings, the customers inthe state were given average electricity bills and

The electricity bills sent to the consumers are the actualelectricity bill to be paid by the consumers: MSEDCL

an appeal was made to send meter readings throughweb portals and mobile apps. Out of 2,30,0000 cus-tomers, only 2,65,0000 consumers sent meter read-ings on their own. Accordingly, they are being giv-en an accurate monthly electricity bill.

Readings had to be taken to correct the aver-age electricity bills sent to the remaining consum-ers. With the relaxation of the lockdown, meterreading, electricity bill distribution, and bill pay-ment centres have been started in the areas per-mitted by the local administration from June 1.Once the meter readings become available, theelectricity bills for the months of April and Mayin the lockdown period are being sent to the con-sumers together. E.g. Consumers received 307units of electricity bills for 3.07 months in June, while 100 units each were used in April, May, andJune. However, the slab rate of 301 units in theJune bill is being increased from 301 to 500 unitsper 100 units for every three months. Apart fromthis, the rates have been fixed at the same ratesas before 31st March 2020, showing the numberof units used till 31st March. This accuracy isused by MSEDCL in computerized systems.

If the consumers pay the average electricitybill during the lockdown period, the remaining

amount is being adjusted in the three-month con-solidated electricity bill in June, excluding fixedcharges and electricity charges for the monthsof April and May. Information about this is beingmentioned in the electricity bill for the custom-ers. In the lockdown, customers were sent aver-age payments similar to winter electricity con-sumption. However, the actual power consump-tion increased in the lockdown in the summerand d. Due to the new electricity tariffs effectivefrom 1st April 2020, monthly but consolidatedelectricity bills for the months of April, May andJune are likely to be more units and amounts.

Electricity bills for the months of April, May,and June are paid to the consumers on a consol-idated but separate monthly basis. This three-month electricity bill issued in June is very ac-curate. Depending on the right slab and powerrate as well as actual power consumption. Not asingle penny has been added to the electricitybill. Therefore, consumers should not go to theoffice for electricity bill repair without any con-fusion and should cooperate by paying the elec-tricity bill through MSEDCL's official electricitybill centre or online at home, an appeal has beenmade by MSEDCL.

Have you been miss-ing your neighborhoodkabadiwala (scrap deal-er) during the lock-down? Yes, they haveshut shops and van-ished, leaving manyhouseholds wonderingwhat to do with theirwaste that had earnedsome money earlier.

The ongoing lock-down has thrown upunprecedented challeng-es at all levels. But aqueer problem that mosthouseholds are facing isthe absence of the regu-lar kabadiwala. Afterthe lockdown was en-forced and shops wereforcibly shut, the pettykabadiwalas with theirshops on the roadsidejust vanished. Initially,

“I have old textbooksand notebooks of my twokids from the previousclasses. The school haspromoted them to the
