As a young boy Rafi was quiteinspired by the singing of a fakir in his village.Rafi was nicknamed “ Pheeko” and expressed hispassion for music by singing in small social gath-erings. Rafi learnt Hindustani Classical Musicfrom Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pt. Jiwan LalMattoo and Firoze Nizami. Young Rafi was quite

influenced by the great playback singer K.L Sai-gal and used to often sing his songs. Rafi made hisdebut as a singer along with Zeenat Begum in thePunjabi film “Gul Baloch” for the song “ SooniyeNee Heeriye Nee” , music was provided by ShyamSunder. In Hindi Rafi made his debut in the film“Gaon ki Gori” (1945).One of Rafi’s most popu-lar number was “ O Dun-iya KE Rakhwale” and “Man Tadpat Hari Dars-han Ko Aaj” for the film“Baiju Bawra” for whichthe music was composedby the great NaushadSaab. On 31st July, 1980 Rafi died due tomassive heart attack and his funeral was attend-ed by thousands of people. Nevertheless Rafi willalways be remembered by his admirers globallyfor his melodious and soul- stirring music.

Ampili says “I was initiated to classical musicat a tender age by my parents and also learntHindustani classical music and started perform-ing publicly. Later when I drifted to Dubai I alsoperformed for the Indian Association there. For-tunately I could seek the blessings of Rafi when Ihad a brief glimpse of him while he was admittedat Bombay Hospital in the year 1980. During myseveral years of singing Rafi Saab was always closeto my heart and I sing his songs with lot of in-volvement and intensity, winning consistent ap-preciation from the audience, hence now I havesettled in Hyderabad and this is my humble trib-ute to one of the greatest singers India has everknown.

Disovering Vikram Seth via TVadaptation of ‘A Suitable Boy’

By: Arun Kr Shrivastav

The TV adaptation of Vikram Seth’s 1400-page novel “A Suitable Boy” by BBC One waspremiered on Sunday evening last week. Onceagain the British press seems enamored withthe spice and scandals that Indian families arecapable of dishing out.

Directed by Mira Nair and written by Pride& Prejudice writer Andrew Davies, A SuitableBoy TV show is a staunchly traditional adapta-tion. Set in fictional Indian town Brahmpur, thestory revolves around four large Indian familiesand the liaisons, marriages, match-making, andindependent choices made by the scions of thesefamilies. Gossips, heart-burns, funny-to-weirdsides of Indian marriages, and riotously color-ful dresses and sets keep the tale racy.

This is perhaps the first TV adaptation byBBC in which there is no white man except forDavies, who has written the script. Among thecast, familiar names such as Tabu, Mahira Kak-ker, Tanya Maniktala, Ishaan Khatter, DaneshRazvi, Mikhail Sen are in prominent roles.

Vikram Seth was rumored to be given£600,000 advance (Rs 5.86 crore today) for hisbook that he took six years to write during whichhe seldom came out of his room–writing sinceafter till midnight.

The story of TV adaptationhas Maan Kapoor played byIshaan Khatter as the ro-mantic hero. He ends up los-ing his heart to a musician-cum-courtesan Saeeda Baitwice his age, a role played bymajestic Tabu. Maan is Hin-du and Saeeda Bai is Muslim, and also she has many small kings as regularvisitors to her musicals.

‘India is independent but people are divided’has been a common refrain of the West when itthinks about India and that theme runs deep inthis novel and TV adaptation.

A Suitable Boy sees more gossip and tensionswithin the families as by Rupa Mehra played byMahira Kakkar, is hell-bent on finding a suitableboy for her younger daughter Lata played by Tan-ya Maniktala. Lata being a modern girl wouldbrook no compromises here. Lata, a Hindu girl

first falls in love with a university mate Kabir, aMuslim and with interests in poetry, and thenfor Amit, played by Mikhail Sen, who again is apoet. You can imagine her mother’s disbelief andcomical reactions!

During the writing of this novel, Seth devel-oped writer’s cramp, which was so acute that hecould no longer hold a pen or write. Then, hewould dictate the story to an assistant his fami-ly had hired for him. His mother Leela Seth wasthe first woman judge of Delhi High Court andlater retired as the Chief Justice of HimachalPradesh High Court.

A Suitable Boy was released in 1993 and itwent on to become a phenomenal success. Sethhad started off as a poet and his story-telling hasa pronounced musical overtones. No wonder, many find his “An Equal Music” more compel-ling than a suitable boy.

But let me finish this post with one of his1992 poems which made him known to the worldbefore A Suitable Boy became a big sensation inthe literary world:

All you who sleep tonightFar from the ones you love,No hands to left or right,And emptiness above –Know that you aren’t alone. The whole world shares your tears,Some for two nights or one,And some for all their years.

I miss those early morning call asking “tu aaj college jaarahi hai?” were definitely worth a while. Being late orbunking a class and calling up others asking “mera signin kiya kya??.” The thrill when you are using your phoneduring the lecture sitting on first bench, teasing yourfriend because it’s the lecture of their teacher crush andLMAO. Ohh and let’s not forget about the lunch breaks!!more over just knowing what your friend has brought soyou can just have her dabba!!! and the fun, the laughs. Those health com-petitions, who gets more signed neurology cases and everyday mandatorymorning coffee stop at hospital’s 3rd floor for daily snap streaksThis longlockdown did make me realize that though college life sucks but friends aresomething that will make even the worst day into a brighter one!!!

Going to college at 7:45 wasn’t my cup of tea, but, beinga part of a dance crew ‘Alite’ and having a couple offriends who always welcomed with a warm and tighthug was the only thing that kept me going for last 2years. I miss going to college, sitting behind canteenand hanging out in the atrium. Spending whole day withmy best friend Diksha and I definitely miss appam andchai. Bring back those days asap please. This virtual

reality isn’t filling up the emptiness around me.Ashish Gawali

Always wanted to enjoy my college life to fullest. Due tothe COVID-19 pandemic, many of the educational insti-tutions have been shut down. I miss going to campusevery day and deciding whether to attend the lectures ornot. Eating hot pipping food in that 15 minutes break, and rushing back to class I miss. Always surrounded byfriends in the atrium, and now just with the technology.I miss each and every corridor of the college and willingto get back to it really soon.

Letters to the Editor....

Eid-ul-Zuha‘Eid-ul-Zuha’ is a famous festival of the Mus-

lims. It is also known as ‘Eid-ul-Adha’ in Arabicand ‘Bakra Id’ or ‘Bakri Id’ in the Indian subconti-nent. Many Muslims in India celebrate this festi-val with great fervour. The word ‘Id’ is derived fromthe Arabic word ‘iwd’, meaning ‘festival’ and Zuha comes from ‘uzhaiyya’,which translates to ‘sacrifice’.

Eid-ul-Zuha is a festival of sacrifice. On this day, Muslims sacrifice agoat or a sheep or a camel to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibra-him (Abraham in Christianity). It is celebrated with great enthusiasmamong Muslims all over the world.

The animal sacrifices made during the festival are mainly to providefood to the poor and to commemorate the noble act of Prophet Ibrahim.

This festival coincides with the Haj pilgrimage in Mecca. Prayers areoffered in the mosques and the sacrificial meat is then distributed afterthe Eid prayers. Special delicacies are prepared and served among familyand friends on the occasion. Gifts are also exchanged on this auspiciousday.

While many politi-cal parties have alwaysincluded environmen-tal issues in their man-ifestoes each time dur-ing elections, howeverthey have alwaysavoided public discus-sions on the their ac-tions on the same. The2019, general electionswere all about PMNarendra Modi. TheBhartiya Janta Party(BJP)-led NationalDemocratic Alliancewas busy projectinghim as a quintessentialleader and a larger-than-life figure, whilethe opposition triedhard to counter such anarrative.

In between all this,we failed to under-stand, that numerousimportant issues werebeing elbowed-outwhile some remainedneglected. One suchissue was the increas-ing pollution and envi-ronmental degradationin major cities of India.

As per a report byGreenpeace Interna-tional, 15 out of the 20most polluted cities inthe world are in Indiaclearly indicating theseriousness of environ-mental degradation in

India. It was estimat-ed that in 2017 around12.4 lakh (1.24 million)Indians died due to airpollution out of which51% were younger than70-years of age.

If we recall andthink what happenedto around 2700 trees inAarey Colony, weshould realize that itwill spell doom for ussooner or later if notaddressed effectively. One must realize thatthe Greens are notagainst the develop-ment, but the concernis at what cost. Whyshould our future gen-eration pay for our self-ish actions. Is shortterm satisfaction soimportant that weoverlook the long termsuffering it will cause.Climate change is al-ready affecting every-one around us and ca-lamities like flashfloods and water log-ging in various citiesare forcing people tostop and comprehendthe result of their ac-tions.

In many areas ofthe Navi Mumbai, ithas been observed thatmany wetlands are be-ing destroyed for differ-ent projects withouttaking into consider-ation the implicationsthis can have on theland reclaimed by de-stroying mangroves.Another surprisingfact is that govern-ment is manually wa-tering mangroves forplantation after de-stroying the oneswhich are naturally

watered by sea tides.Yes, they do make falsepromises of replantingand relocating but tech-nically this is not veryfeasible as most of thetime such plants oftendon’t survive. What ahorrendous waste.

Over the years weare seeing rising con-crete jungles along withrise of incidents of flood-ing in those area as theyviolate CRZ regulationand land compliance. This also makes us won-der if human lives arecheaper than develop-ment of city. Our city isblessed with treasure ofnatural mangroveswhich is also referred asour mini amazon forestas it is supporting vari-ous species of vital seaplants. Even the pro-posed Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor willlead to the destructionof around 50000 man-groves to say the least. This will destruct thelife species along NaviMumbai, Ulwe, Uranand JNPT. As per re-search mangroves havemore carbon storage ca-pacity than other for-ests. They are our lifeline against floods, asource of livelihood forthe locals and a homeand breeding ground fornumerous species ofcrabs, fish, turtles etcand not to forget themigratory birds. Is thisthe cost we are ready topay and put the life offuture generations injeopardy? How can webe so blind as to destroysomething which is ac-tually saving us?

Useful wasteOnly few decades back, the people were learning to manage

resources and today we are already late for learning to managethe waste. Huge quantities of waste are being generated in ur-ban life style, which has a different consumption and waste gen-eration pattern from that of the rural areas. For a city like NaviMumbai and Mumbai, the management of wastes has assumedunmanageable proportions due to large quantities of waste gen-erated and limited avenues for disposal. So it becomes all themore imperative to treat the waste and re-cycle it for re use.

As one approaches Mumbai/ Navi Mumbai one is greeted byhuge dumps of garbage, polythene bags and other untreatedwaste lying close to the railway lines and areas inhabited by theslums. In spite of all the information and cue available from theexperiences of other mega polices in the world, Mumbai/ NaviMumbai could not take the required steps for waste manage-ment timely. Navi Mumbai which was conceived as a planned, clean city also could not capitalize on the experiences availablefrom Mumbai and it too went the Mumbai way and here also onecan find huge dumps of garbage emanating foul smell, pollutingthe environment and swarms of flies acting as carriers of diseas-es .

It is quite surprising to note that the concept of waste man-agement was given thought quite earlier at the time of formationof the city and policies were formulated in this regard but againlike other policies, these too, were lost sight of mid way. Theconcept of dry and wet waste segregation, sewage treatment planand utilizing its effluent for horticulture and other non domesticpurposes, treatment of bio-degradable waste through vermicul-ture and incinerators is already existing and was being practicedbut not very earnestly. Now with the aim of implementing thesepolicies of waste management effectively the NMMC has comeout with penal action for violation of norms in this regard. Like-wise, strict action should be taken against the illegal dumping ofconstruction debris. It is for NMMC to reflect its seriousnessas regards the implementation of its various policies and shouldeducate and bring awareness amongst the residents towards thebenefits of adhering to these waste management policies in larg-er goal of environmental pollution control, apart from saving de-pleting resources and saving on waste disposal cost.
