The APMC police have arrested an

accused who allegedly after renting out four-wheelers from OLX sold these. The police seized four expensive cars and a sports bike worth Rs. 37 lakh from the possession of the accused, identified as Sheldon Frock Vaz.

The accused Shel-don Frock Vaz, who has been arrested in the case had advertised on OLX website that he wanted to rent a car for a good company. See-ing the advertisement, the car owners used to contact him. He used to take the car and docu-ments from them and paid the car rent regu-

larly to the owners for two months. After that, he used to allegedly stop paying the money to the car owners. In the same manner, the accused took car of Shishir Menon, a resi-dent of Koparkhairane, a few months back under the pretext of renting it. The APMC police started tracking down the accused after a case of embezzlement was registered at the APMC police station.

As the accused was cheating through OLX and his name was not known, a team of Assistant Inspector Khopikar, Constable Ashok Khaire, Chan-drakant Kadam, Police Naik Harad and others

traced the accused through technical means and informers. It was learned that he was in the vegetable market at APMC. Accordingly, the police set a trap in the vegetable market at APMC and arrested him. During interroga-tion by the police, he confessed to have com-mitted similar crimes in Vashi as well as in the limits of Hinjewadi and Pimpri Chinchwad police stations in Pune.

According to police, the accused Sheldon Vaz was further inter-rogated and the vehicles Mahindra XUV, Tata Hexa, BMW, Suzuki Irtinga and Kawasaki Z-800 worth Rs 37 lakh were seized.

With the intervention of Panvel Railway police, a resident of

Panvel, Bhupesh Srivastava was able to get back his lost bag that contained ID cards and several currency notes.

Srivastava while alighting from the train at Panvel sta-tion, forgot to carry his big leather bag and left it on the side of his seat. “The bag contained around Rs. 50 thou-sand, ID cards, Aad-haar cards, two mobile h a n d s e t s and some important documents. I had kept the bag alongside but forgot to take it while alighting from the train. I realized it only after I looked for the purse to pay for the tea that I had bought from the tea stall. I got a jolt and was sure that I might not get it back, still I rushed to the station,” said Srivastava.

He rushed to the station with a little hope. He met a lady police constable at the station and enquired about his lost bag from her. She showed him a mo-bile picture of that bag and explained,

“When I went inside the compartment, I had noticed the bag lying there. I clicked the picture and deposited the bag to the Railway police office.”

Srivastava was overwhelmed with her presence of mind and came to know that she is constable ‘Bhagawati’. Af-

ter reaching the Railway police office, he was quite amazed with the friendly attitude of all the staffs and particularly Sub Inspector Renu Patel. After com-pleting all the formalities Srivastava was handed over his bag with all his belongings.

“I am overjoyed and equally as-tounded with the prompt action taken by the lady sub inspector. I will show my gratitude by felicitating them,” said Srivastava, who is also the founder of Vistar Charitable Trust.

Sonu Singh Rajput, also known as SSR, always dreamt of helping others.

As a casting director, he feels he is helping the aspiring talents to fulfil their dreams of making it big in film and television indus-try. Born in the remote village Haluwar-Pipra in Gopalganj District in Bihar, SSR’s parents

wanted him to run family business and carve a niche for himself as successful entrepreneur. How-ever, SSR had different aims and vision. He wanted to become a well-known casting director in the film industry and was focused and determined for it. Af-ter completing his studies in Delhi he pursued his career in banking sector. Later, he joined the film industry. Today Sonu Singh Rajput has become a well-known casting director and has casted thou-sands of talents for TV-Serials, Short Films, Feature Films, Web-Series and Reality Shows. In a tete-e-tete with the Newsband Senior Correspondent Abh-itash D. Singh, he speaks in detail about his journey and future plans. Excerpts:

Q: When and why did you decide to get into the entertainment industry as a casting direc-

tor?

A: I was inclined towards arts and entertainment right from the initial days. I used to love watch-

ing street plays as well as dramas and plays in Delhi when I was doing my schooling and pursuing my higher studies. My family never wanted me to enter into the film industry and become a casting direc-tor. My parents as well as many villagers, are still unaware about the profession of casting director. They always encouraged me to become a success-ful entrepreneur or enter into the family business of Medical shop in Bihar. After completing my studies, I got a job in a Bank in Delhi but I was not satisfied. I wanted to do something where there will be lots of challenges every day. I left Delhi and came to Mum-bai to help one of my friends in Mumbai and I fell in love with the city of dreams. One of my friends en-couraged me to try my hands as a casting director. I took it seriously and joined as a casting assistant in a well-known production house of Mumbai and from there my journey of casting director started. Earlier, the job of casting director was not so in-teresting and challenging, but after the success of casting directors like Mukesh Chhabra, Ab-hishek Banerjee, Honey Trehan, Shruti Mahajan, Vicky Sidana, Jogi Malang, Shanoo Sharma, Atul Mongia, Nandini Shrikent and few others, many young boys and girls have started taking this profession very seriously.

Q: As a casting director what is your dream and what dead-

line have you set for it to get fulfilled?

A: I started as a casting assistant in 2017 and

within four years’ time I have achieved a lot. Today, I con-sider myself a successful casting director and I have casted many episodic series of Savdhaan India and Crime Pa-

trol also casted for big production house films. But slowly I am aiming to cast for the big films of well-known production houses like Yashraj Films, Dharma Productions, Red-Chillies and many such production houses. In many serials, for which I have casted, my names appear as a casting director and now my parents are very proud of me. But I have set a goal of seeing my name as a casting director on the big screen and that will be the biggest gift of my life for my parents. In 2021 itself, I am part of some exciting projects. I think for me there is no deadline because I live in present and I am doing lots of proj-ects and busy in my work.

Q: What was the turning point in your life as a casting director?

A: As a casting assistant in 2017, I casted for many serials like Ishq Subhan Allah, Guddan

Tumse Na Ho Payega and many more. Within two years of hard work, I was promoted as casting head. I worked for many shows as a casting direc-tor. I have done casting for more than 200 episodes of both Crime Patrol and Savdhaan India but the turning point in my life was when I got associated as a casting director with Colosceum Media Pvt. Ltd. and also casted for Pooja Films and Entertain-ment Vashu Bhagnani's movie, Khamoshi. Joining the Colosceum has brought good luck for me and since then there has been no looking back. Still, I am doing many shows of Colosceum.

Q: Please tell us about the projects that you have done as a casting director and your

upcoming projects?

A: As a casting director I have come a long way. I have done casting for 234 episodes of Crime

Patrol between 2017-2020, 10 Episodes of Laal Ishq, 5 episodes of The Judgement Day, 1 episode of MTV Splitsvilla, 136 episodes of Savdhaan India, Pooja Entertainments Films Film "Khamoshi", 14 ep-isodes of Love ok Please, 13 episodes of Hum Saaf Saaf Hai and 1 episode of Perfect Pati and many other shows. There are many future projects in the pipeline. I am casting for Web-Series on Netflix, Amazon Prime and also the upcoming film "Rosie' in which Vivek Oberoi is playing the lead actor.

Q: Which role as a casting director do you like the most?

A: The best part of my job as a casting direc-tor is that I get an opportunity to interact

with many well-known actors, directors, pro-ducers as well as many technicians from the film industry. Also, I get to interact with many aspiring actors, actresses and direc-tors from various parts of India who come

to Mumbai, the city of dreams to fulfill their dreams of making it big. And one

more thing, I try my level best to fulfill the dreams of many artists and talents.

Q: your advice to the aspiring actors/actresses?

A: My advice to all the aspiring actors and actresses and all

those who are struggling from long to make a mark in the industry is that they should have a ‘Never Say

Die’ attitude and also have patience to wait for long.

The grand old man of dance,

whose lifetime contribution to the world of dance, is acclaimed interna-tionally, Dr. Sunil Kothari left for his heavenly abode on 27th December, 2020 after cardiac arrest at Fortis Hospital in New Delhi. Earlier, during the month he was admitted for Covid, after treatment he was recovering fast and shared the same news with everyone. He was 87 and a bachelor too.

The last time I met him was in February this year at the Chowdiah Memo-rial auditorium in Banga-lore, where I was invited to be part of the Abhinava Dance Academy's sil-ver jubilee celebrations programme. After I met him, he immedi-ately exclaimed "How lovely to see you", I was amused at his in-stant response. Sunil Kothari was consid-ered an encyclopaedia of dance, dance historian and eminent dance critic with decades of writing for several publications. He was also author of several dance books, exposing the varied facets of classical and folk dancing.

Sunil bhai, that is how he was popularly called by all the dancers, started his career as a lecturer of chartered accountancy at Sydenham College in Mumbai but his heart would always dance as he was fascinated about the complexity and elegance of dance and dancers. In his reviews he was quite mild in his criticism but he was quite outspoken about maintaining the quality of dance as he rightly be-lieved that the quality of the performance is more important than the quan-

tity. He learnt different danc-es, particularly the theoreti-cal aspect of dance, hence is among the few dance writers to have written about

all the eight types of clas-sical dances. I remember the days when he used to practically move around with a typewriter in his hand. He used to travel to other cities and I must ad-mit he was the most active dance writer I have ever seen. Inspite of his old age and health problems he would be on the move always, today Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Par-is or New York. He was a great friend of all the top dancers and would regu-larly meet them and write

about them too.While review-

ing the perfor-mance of Yamini K r i s h n a m u r t i , who was perform-ing the famous Kuchipudi num-

ber "Swami Ra Ra"(My Lord Please come), with her large expressive eyes while the performance was on, a Sardarji moved towards the stage and the dancer blatantly said " I did not call you, am call-ing my Lord"- this was written by Sunil in one of the leading newspapers. While in Mumbai Sunil used to write for the Times of India, Femina and sev-eral other publications. He was the head of the depart-ment of dance at Rabindra Bharati University in Kol-kata and was connected to several cultural organisa-tions. He won the presti-gious Sangeet Natak Aka-demi award and Padma Shri too. His invaluable contribution will always be remembered and cher-ished. May His Soul Rest in Peace.

QUESTION FOR NExT WEEK: HOW DO yOU TACKLE PRESSURE FROM

PEER AND FAMILy DURING ExAMINATION?

Valentine's Day has increasingly become an over-commercial-ized holiday. Valentine's Day is supposed to be a day to cel-ebrate love, but it has been commercialized. Today, the holiday is associated with spending money on gifts for loved one. It has become just another medium to make money.

Sania Vinod

When it first started, the meaning of such a day was supposed to be about nothing but love, love, love. To truly understand what the real meaning of Valentine’s Day is, we have to go back to when the holiday was first created. Now, Valentine's Day is a marketing scam just like every other holiday. Any holiday that forces you to spend money. However, it's your money and you decide how you want to spend it: If you're single, then treat yourself to something nice or ignore the day totally. Either spend it alone lavishly or

don't judge people celebrating it.Sajil Nair

My Valentine's Day is nothing out of the ordinary. I celebrate it by going out with friend or have my favourite delicacy. I spend time with my dog and celebrate it with my family. I like it this way. Val-entine's Day is just a normal day for me as I believe there should not be a single day to celebrate love.

Today security is a major concern and it is the reason why the pri-

vate security providing agencies are carrying out brisk business. The in-creasing crime graph, deteriorating quality of service being provided by the state security agency i.e. the po-lice and the widening gap between the supply and the demand for secu-rity in the society, are few evident reasons why the private security pro-viding agencies are mushrooming up in every nook and corner, especially in the megapolises like Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The growth in the business and constructional activi-ties has provided a great flip to this sector which is rapidly turning into a huge industry providing employ-ment opportunity to large number of uneducated or less educated youths.

Initially when the services for providing private security to the residential societies and the busi-ness establishments started, its qual-ity was superior and it seemed to have addressed the much needed re-quirement of the society, which the state police was unable to provide. Only the limited people with sound credentials and required experience could obtain the license to run such agencies. Even the agencies had a practice of sending their guards for training in the field from the retired police personnel and the retired men from armed forces. The state secu-rity board was created to control the functioning of such agencies besides overseeing the welfare of the employees. Gradually like any other sector, considering the exces-sive increase in demand and likeli-hood of making big money, lured many others into this sector leading to unhealthy competition and spu-rious elements entering this field.

Not only the standard of recruits deteriorated, and the formal training was done away with, this sector has today become the worst exploiter of its employees. The working hours are being stretched to twelve hours and even to twenty four hours some-times without any monetary benefits or facilities. They are being measly paid which is difficult to survive on in the megapolis where every thing costs fortune. Even the minimum wages act is being flouted blatantly and in a country where there is no dearth of manpower, there are sev-eral who still willingly join such companies only to be exploited. This practice has indirectly taken toll on the quality of service being provided as there is generally no commitment on the part of the employee towards the service. They even enter into il-legal activities to make the both ends meet. Considering the illegal profits in the business and with demand exceeding supply, many agencies with doubtful integrity have also joined the bandwagon. Even there are agencies existing, which do not have even the required registration to run such business.

It is high time that the policy is strengthened to curb the unprofes-sional agencies with poor creden-tials from entering the sector. The residents on their part should check the registration and also inform the local police before assigning them the job. The requirements to start the agency providing private securi-ty should be made more stringent so that professionally managed agen-cies do not face unhealthy competi-tion from the unorganized agencies besides cleansing the field off anti social elements who have entered the sector.

competing role against Actor Abhay Deol’s character in the series

Actor Annup Sonii who has ruled TV screens for years will now be a part of the up-coming war-epic 1962: The War In The Hills. He will essay the role of Major Ranjith Khatar - a com-petitive army officer and a dear friend of Major Suraj Singh (Abhay Deol). so we're quite familiar with each other's style of working. We met one fine day and he mentioned he's working on an ambitious take on the 1962 war and I instantly wanted to be a part of it. My role of Ranjith Khatar is a very sweet and nice one - he is constantly

competing with Abhay's Suraj Singh but in a friendly way. 1962: The War In The Hills is a great story and I am glad I am part of a series that focus-es on lesser known parts of the war. I think any war story related to your own country can be quite inspiring”

and healthy competition with Major Suraj Singh (Abhay Deol) and believes in him in the most adverse times. Hotstar Specials presents 1962: The War in The Hills is slated for release on 26th February 2021 only on Dis-ney+ Hotstar VIP and Dis-ney+ Hotstar Premium.

the smoke and obnox-ious smell. Day by day it is getting worse.”

Speaking about the issue another resident Vinay Chavan said, “The issue has become intolerable as the PCMC is dumping the waste so close to the residential areas and then burn-

ing it which is causing a lot of health issues to the citizens. The pollu-tion level is definitely increasing because of this. The worst part is that even though the corporation is asking us to segregate waste, they dump it all in the area which is causing even more issues to us. One can see thick black smoke all around the

Panvel Matheran road area due to the burn-ing of garbage. We have lodged complaint multiple times to the local gram panchayat but there has been no improvement in the condition. We urge the corporation to work to-wards it as it can cause major health issues to the people living in the area.”

The newly devel-oped node of

Ulwe, with a popula-tion of around 3-4 lakh people, does not have a single garden. The residents of Ulwe have been demanding the construction of gardens for the last three years but their demands have remained unheard. Lack of gardens is forcing the fitness enthusiasts and also the senior citizens to walk and exercise at the Kharkopar and Bamandongri station premises.

CIDCO has identi-fied few plots in Ulwe for the development of gardens but these are still lying unused and no steps have been taken to develop these into full-fledged garden for the benefits of Ulwe residents.

Savita Pandey, a resident of Sector-17 in

Ganga Vihar Apart-ment in Ulwe said, “I bought a flat as I felt that the node has scenic beauty and there will be plenty gardens for the children and the elderly. A plot right in front of my apartment has been reserved for the garden. However, it is more than three years now, but no ef-fort is being made to develop garden. Hope the authorities wake up and construct it on a priority basis. I go all the way to Kharkopar station along with my nine year old son and 13 year old daughter for morning walk. If we get proper garden in 2021 then it will be really a New Year bonanza for all of us.”

Amarjeet Singh, a resident of Prabhat Heights in Sector-9, Ulwe said, “ There is a small pond in Sector-9 and inside it there are

few rides for the chil-dren and also a walk-ing track, but it is not a proper garden. Most of the time it is empty because of mosquito menace. I have been here in Ulwe for the last five years and we have been demanding a garden for the last few years but our request is falling into deaf ears of the authorities. CIDCO officials should inspect the area and then only they can understand the grievances of the residents. We need a proper garden.”

CIDCO Public Relation Office Priya Ratambe while speak-ing to Newsband said, “The City and Indus-trial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has already identi-fied a few plots and if everything goes well, the Ulwekars will have a garden for them very soon.”
