OCTOBER 2014 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 3

From the Potentate

Greetings Nobles and Friends,If you were at our September Stated

Meeting on the 12th, you’ll rememberthe proposed new Zuhrah home presen-tation by Past Potentate,Al Niederhaus,of the Zuhrah Site InvestigationCommittee. If you weren’t,I’ll try to recapwhat has been happening to date. Evenbefore Zuhrah vacated its old site on2540 Park Avenue in Minneapolis, theZuhrah Site Committee has been lookingat viable sites which might fit Zuhrah fora new home.Hundreds of sites over thepast three years have been initially lookedat and a few, seriously considered. Now,aserious contender for a new home hasbeen identified. It’s at 6120 Blue CircleDrive on the Minnetonka/Hopkins bor-der (about a four-minute drive from theintersection of Hwy 494 and Crosstown(Hwy 62).

At the September Stated Meeting, the initial numbers (cost of purchase, estimated cost of build-out, estimatedyearly insurance, taxes, utilities, andoperational costs) were presented.Because the initial numbers fit withinour guidelines (the $650K purchaseprice and estimated $125K build-outcosts fit within the $1.1M proceedsfrom the Park Avenue sale), and theestimated $75K yearly operationcosts fit within our existing budgetwithout serious impact to our otherexpenditures (i.e., Membership, fra-ternal activities, etc.), we are continu-ing to seriously pursue this site as apossible new Zuhrah home.

The building is about 10,000 squarefeet, sits on about 2 1/2 acres, and hasabout 60 parking spaces with room formore. It’s on one level (no elevatorsrequired) and appears to be in soundcondition. The Nobility voted at theSeptember meeting to permit Zuhrahto continue to pursue the proposedsite. This will allow Zuhrah to apply fora liquor license, see actual taxes, applyfor any zoning requirements, and such.Should any issues be found, these willbe presented to the Nobility beforethe October Stated Meeting vote toapprove/reject the site.

Building usage questions such as

how should Zuhrah run the bar, howwill we utilize the catering kitchen, willthere be approved caterers, how will apart-time building manager function, and can we rent out part of the spaceto another fraternal organization, willlikely be touched upon at the Octobermeeting but the different possibleanswers to these type of questionswill consume many hours of follow-ondiscussions with the Divan, theUnits/Clubs, and individual Nobles.

However, in the end, it is the ZuhrahNobility which will decide at theOctober meeting whether to approveor reject the purchase of this site. If youhave any specific questions that you feelare important for Zuhrah to investigatebefore the October meeting, pleasepass them on to me, Past Potentate AlNiederhaus,or any member of the SiteInvestigation Committee and we’ll tryto have an answer before the meeting.

Supporting our FraternalOrganizations

This is the time of year that many ofour Units and Clubs have their annu-al/semi-annual fund-raiser.Whether itbe an omelet breakfast, a pancakebreakfast, a pheasant/wild rice sale, orsilent auction, please support ourUnits and Clubs.

CircusesI also feel I need to clarify a bit of

how our circuses work and how theybenefit Zuhrah. The Birak and Willmarcircuses are club fund-raisers for theirparticular clubs and primarily benefitthose clubs. They are much like otherclub pancake breakfasts and fund-rais-ers. That said, both the Birak andWillmar Shrine Clubs give generouslyto our Shrine Hospital Transportationfund and for that, I truly thank them.

On the other hand, the proceedsfrom the Minneapolis circus, along withZuhrah’s dues, actually fund Zuhrah’sday-to-day operations (i.e., Zuhrah’soffice, our Admin person’s salary, ourgeneral liability insurance, utilities, theper-capita fees to the Imperial, thisArabian, mailings, etc.). So if you con-tribute to the Willmar or Birak circuses(and we hope you do),don’t think that aseparate contribution to theMinneapolis circus would be redundant. It isn’t and would be greatly appreciated.

Calendar UpdatesFinally, one more time: On

November 9th, Zuhrah will be hostingan informal Pre-Circus/Post-ParadeThank You party at the SavageAmerican Legion. This is to thank all theNobles and their Ladies who havedevoted much of their time this year tosupporting Zuhrah and to those whowork our various Shrine circuses.Manytimes, these are one and the same peo-ple. Zuhrah excels because of theexcellence and commitment of thepeople who comprise our units, clubs, and committees. Thanks once again.

Fraternally yours,

Ted Martz2014 Zuhrah Potentate

IMPERIAL WORLD OF SHRINERS A Message from the IMPERIAL POTENTATE

Dear fellownobles,

Lady Cheryland I aretremendouslygrateful andthankful foreach of youand for yourongoing dedi-cation to yourfraternity andphilanthropy.

We also want, one more time, tothank the members (and families) ofKem and Zuhrah Shriners and theMidwest Shrine Association for theircountless efforts to ensure a success-ful, well-run Imperial Session, and fortheir endless support and many kind-nesses over the past several months.

Please also know that as we take onthe responsibilities of ImperialPotentate and First Lady, we are veryaware of and honored by your support, trust and faith in us. As ImperialPotentate, I will also be serving asChairman of the Board of Directors forShriners Hospitals for Children. Pleasebe assured that both Cheryl and I willdo everything in our power to do whatis best for both Shriners Internationaland Shriners Hospitals for Children.Weare looking forward to working witheveryone to strengthen and improveboth our beloved fraternity and ourincredible philanthropy.

This Imperial Year, we will continueto emphasize the importance ofstrengthening and increasing member-ship, as well as the critical issues ofopen, honest communication.

We will also be encouraging every-one to share and show their pride inour organizations – and in what theystand for.As Shriners, we improve livesand make the world a better place. Ifwe share our pride in that, consider theimpact each one of us could have onboth membership and patient numbers.

Starting the Year at a Fast PaceAs Imperial Potentate, my calendar is

jammed with events, meetings and otheractivities. We’ve already begun to attendassociation meetings, temple celebra-tions and events in support of our healthcare system. While the traveling is exten-sive, it is also energizing as we meet andspend time with hard-working,committedfraternity members and hospitalemployees everywhere we go.

It was our great pleasure to attendthe 62nd annual East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game in Baker City, Ore.Congratulations to Chairman Bill Quierof Al Kader Shriners and the host tem-ples,Al Kader and Hillah, as well as par-ticipating temples El Korah, Masada andEl Katif, for such an outstanding event. These regional games are a tremen-dous opportunity to raise local aware-ness of both Shriners Hospitals forChildren and Shriners International, especially among young people, which is

tremendously important to our future.Thank you for all your hard work.

Another important community eventwe were pleased to be able to attend wasthe golf tournament at Elm Ridge CountryClub in Montreal, a benefit for the Canadahospital’s capital campaign. Imperial SirJerry Gantt and I had the pleasure ofspeaking at the event, which raised morethan $500,000 for the construction proj-ect. It was wonderful to see patients fromour Canada hospital participating, and tohave the opportunity to thank the manysponsors and donors who helped makethe event such a great success.

We also recently attended the 125thanniversary celebration of TangierShriners in Omaha, Nebraska. Morethan a century of success is certainlyworth celebrating. The approximately2,600 Tangier Shriners support ourChicago,Twin Cities and St. Louis hospi-tals. Over the years, Tangier Shrinershave assisted more than 15,000 localchildren, giving countless volunteerhours and funds in that effort.

That is the work of one temple, and itis impressive. Multiply that by 200 – rep-resenting our nearly 200 temples full ofnobles working to make the world a bet-ter place and help kids have a chance to

live their dreams, and the impact wemake is clearly huge.As Shriners,we havemuch to be proud of – we need to shareour pride, our experiences as Shriners, and our commitment to helping otherswith everyone we can. If we are willing todo that – to generate interest individual-ly and personally, imagine what couldhappen to our membership numbers.

Serving and Caring for theChildren

By now many of you are familiar withone of the statements that guides me:

“One hundred years from now itwill not matter what my bank accountwas, the sort of house I lived in, or thekind of car I drove...but the world maybe different because I was important inthe life of a child.”

When I have the opportunity tospend time with the children we serve, itis very special. While visiting the St. Louishospital, I had the opportunity to inter-act with several patients, including KatieLadlie, one of our new National PatientAmbassadors, while filming the welcomevideo for the SHC Open.Seeing the kidssmiling and having a great day is why weare all part of Shriners International. The

SHC Open will be held October 13-19in Las Vegas. It is one of our two signa-ture events, and gets bigger and betterevery year, in part because of the hardwork of more than 1,000 volunteers.Visit shrinershospitalsopen.com and seehow you can help, or just come on outand enjoy the fun. If neither of thosepossibilities is feasible, remember tocheck it out on the Golf Channel.

As the Imperial Year progresses,we willcontinue to share reasons to be proud tobe a Shriner, and we will continue to seekways to strengthen our organizations, andto successfully showcase the fraternityand the health care system, at both thelocal and national levels.A key to our suc-cess will be your commitment and partic-ipation in these efforts – it will take everyone of us – working together – to makea substantial difference.

We look forward to working withyou – and to hearing your ideas,

Thank you for all you do forShriners International and ShrinersHospitals for Children.

Yours in the Faith,Dale W. StaussImperial Potentate

OCTOBER 2014 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 7

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

It’s that time again…..after all thesummer appearances, we look forwardto the fall schedule.

The German Band has several engage-ments this fall: New Prague DozinkyDays on September 20th where theyhave played for 20+ years; TheRobbinsdale Pancake Breakfast onSeptember 28th where they also haveplayed for 20+ years; on October 4ththey are doing a private party inZumbrota;on October 14th they will playat Victory Lutheran Church in EdenPrairie; October 26th will find them trav-eling to Bloomington to play at theMasonic Home; and finally on October28th they will be playing at Our Lady ofPeace Catholic Church.

The Dixie Kats played in Fridley for aRotary club which was greatly appreciat-ed by the club especially since the tem-perature was cold (52 degrees and a 30mph wind). It felt like the Winter Carnival!

The Flames will also play for theRobbinsdale Shrine Club’s pancakebreakfast. They have done this for 20+years too and began back when it washeld in the original Robbinsdale HighSchool on Hwy 100.

The Concert Band is getting readyfor the circus in November, theCeremonial as well as our annualChristmas concerts.

On a different note, several of uswere at the stated meeting as a discus-sion was held about a new building inMinnetonka. I thought it was a goodpresentation and looked more doablethan previous sites of which I was aware. As for a rehearsal space and storage thatwill be something to work out but it canbe done. I’ve seen the building manytimes from the outside as I had a busi-ness partner in the area. It’s a quiet, safearea and easy to get to.Although the firsttime you drive there it can be confusing– I think the route was designed by aviolinist after playing “The Flight of theBumble Bee.” By the time you read thisyou will have had a chance to see it, haveall the details, and will be able to make agood judgment about the space.

Going back to the circus: we willhave some new tunes this year. One inparticular was composed by ClemTocca who was the Music Director(and fine trumpet player) for theTarzan Zerbini Circus and playedZuhrah’s circus for many years. Clemwrote this piece the year that the“New Copyright Law” was rewrittenand enacted. Clem had to rewritealmost all the circus music for the actsas the music they had been using fellunder the newest copy write law andwas not in the public domain. AnywayI’m looking forward to playing the newmusic this year.

Meanwhile remember “CompoundInterest.”

We had our first fall meeting after ourJuly get together (dark in August) atNielsen’s Sports Bar in Savage onSeptember 3, 2014. President Jakeopened our meeting at 7:04 p.m.At ourmeeting were the following members:Dennis,Denny,Al (late because of HappyHour at Thunder Valley),Ken,Craig, John(Prospect / Sgt at Arms) and others (Iforgot to put their names down).

Craig made a motion to accept a newmember – Ken Johnson (15 membersnow). We had seven members vote toaccept him as one of our own. He’llnow be referred to as Ken #2 (lastnames omitted to protect the innocent).

Ladies and Nobles, we have complet-ed another successful parade season.Of course, we had a slight set back dueto the theft of our float, however, thatturned out to be simply a bump in theroad. We had wonderful crowds at theparades and were so happy to have ournew members joining us as well assome seasoned veterans finding thetime to re-join us.Thanks, guys!

It sounds as if Zuhrah now has a newhome. That's great news. When we havethe opportunity, we should take amoment to thank the members of theinvestigative committee. Several Clubsand Units have fund raising events com-ing up that we should make an effort tosupport. The Shrine Circus is also quick-ly approaching. Let’s dig in and help asmuch as we can.

It sounds as if the Steel Drum BandChristmas/Officer Installation Party isset for December. If you have not yetreceived your invitation, it should bearriving soon.

We should also plan the logistics ofbeing able to perform at the circus aswell as the Pote's Ball. The circus is awonderful forum for the general publicto experience us,AND, the Pote’s Ball is,more than likely, the only time of yearthat the majority of Zuhrah Nobles andtheir Ladies have an opportunity to hearus as well.

No reports from the SunshineCommittee. However, Nobles and Ladieswho we need to keep in our thoughtsand prayers as they deal with medical

issues both past and present are, LadyBarbe Burlingame, Lady Mary Lind, LadyBarb Moser, Noble Jim Burlingame PP,Noble John “Grumpy” Garton and NobleLarry Horwedel.

Birthday spankin’s go out, this month,to Lady Mary Lind, Lady Judy Goff andNoble Jim Burlingame JR.

Anniversary congrats go out to NobleDave Hanson and his Lady Judy, alongwith Noble Tom Lind and his Lady Mary.

‘til next time.

Circus Report – Al reported thateverything is going fine. He’ll haveButtons for any Helpers sometimelater this month.

Gary gave a report on our upcom-ing Golf Outing Saturday, September6th, at the Apple Valley Country Club.Ken #1 noted we have many peoplewho have said they plan to attend ourouting, but we can always use more.

John noted that the RASC(Robbinsdale Area Shrine Club) has anupcoming event – their Annual PancakeBreakfast on September 28th, at theCrystal Community Center on DouglasDrive. Some of our members expressedinterest in attending.

Craig made a motion to adjourn ourmeeting (Gary 2nd). After much dis-cussion and ordering another round, this motion overwhelmingly passed.

Band on Parade at 2013 Imperial

There is a reason to believe that thisis the season to button up against thecold and to make our own small shel-ters warmer. But from warm shelterscome cool ideas. New intricate sci-ences cross our minds, like radio con-trolled devices and talking wristwatch-es. When we held the ZARC Julymeeting, VP Don Wurden, KØIYN,signed up Bob Patterson,WØBQD, asa new ZARC member. Bob, besidesbeing an FCC ham radio operator, intrigued us with some of his otherinterests, such as his interest in radiocontrolled model airplanes and addingradio controlled drones to his hobby.

At ZARC,we welcome more brotherShriners who have equally excitinghobby ideas to share. When Apple addswrist computers to exchange messages,it warms our hearts and reminds us ofthe old Dick Tracy comic book days thatfirst inspired us toward operating morepersonalized communication deviceslike ham radios.

Whatever the electronic sciences pro-vide, at ZARC we want those Shrine per-sons among us to come to the ZARCmeetings and discuss their ideas, whetherthey are ham radio operators or possiblyintend to make that their hobby. Our stat-ed meeting has been changed to the sec-ond Thursdays of each month and wasadded to the Zuhrah Arabian calendar. Our October meeting will be heldpnThursday,October 9,2014,at the ScottishRite temple location. Dinner will be at 5p.m. in the dining hall. Then the ZARCstated meeting will be on the third floor atthe parking lot side of the temple at 6:30p.m.All Zuhrah brothers are welcome!

Well, our Mobil Noble League cham-pionship tournament was held on August29th at the Bloomington K.C. Hall. Wehad twenty attend and the social hourwas great again this year, thanks to CarlHanson picking up the tab for those whoindulged. Our luncheon was again verygood and everyone enjoyed the menu.

There was discussion about theleague being dissolved and all agreedthat it was time. Of course, those whowished to continue in the future weremaking plans. They will make their owntee times and pay the course if theyplay. So another milestone has “bit thedust.” That’s what is called change!

Winners of the tournament were:Low Gross: Bob Lyons first place,

coming in second was Mike Chovanand third was a tie between JimHengel and Jack Ostroot.

Low Net winner was Jim Easteswith Dick Grant second and JohnLesch third. Bob Lyons’ and JimEastes’ names were engraved on ourtravelling trophy under Jim’s care.

Almost all the golfers were monetar-ily rewarded and the treasury is empty.

Our ailing members, Don Hoglundhas now returned home and Mickeywill continue her help with some out-side as well. John Bastys comes to ourweekly Friday luncheons when he isable, still not able to use his right handor arm. Yours truly attends when hischemo treatments do no interfere.

Our Friday lunches are picking up,as Len Cramer is able to attend as hiskids got his wife in a nursing home inFaribault allowing him some freedom.Ken Skoog was able to come recentlyand good to see them both again.

Lots of activity to end the parade yearand the lads welcomed the challenge. Thelast parade of the year was in the beautifulcity of Watkins,Minnesota. We call it a verynice walk in the park as it’s a short andsweet parade. Usually we also have anafternoon parade in Pine City, Minnesota, but that was not on our schedule this year.At the end of the parade, as Pipe MajorJerry Oliver was bringing us off the paraderoute and still at attention he made theannouncement that he was retiring fromhis position as Drum Major. That’s JerryOliver in front with the feather bonnetleading down the parade route as he hasfor so many, many times. We thank you foryour effort and understand when thephysical body tells you to take it easy.

The band also made appearance inAugust at the Lodge in Northfield as aGrand Lodge membership event, thecornerstone laying at the MinnesotaMasonic Home on August 24th andthe Bemidji, Minnesota, to play at theShrine Football game at the request ofImperial Sir Dale Stauss.

It's also sad to report that the PipesDown Party tradition that we allenjoyed was cancelled this year. So Iask you to please look forward to nextyear’s event.

Finally, we like to wish well BillDrinane as he had knee replacementand hand surgery at the end of August. We hope he mends soon and getsback to the pipe ranks.

With that I come to a close foranother month. From the back ranks“Cluich Le Ceol Binn” (Play the sweetmusic).

Not much happening with theChanters this fall.We are still figuring outif we have enough singers to do our nor-mal holiday singing. We should knowmore after the next board meeting.

Don’t forget the Bloomington AreaShrine Club’s Pancake and Sausage break-fast on the 19th of October, at the K. C.Hall on American Boulevard inBloomington. This year, as an added fea-ture,you will be able to purchase some ofour “World Famous” sausage at thebreakfast. OCTOBER 2014 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 9

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

CONGRATULATIONS, DAVEEMERY, 40 YEARS, ZUHRAHDRUM CORPS

This month we spotlight DaveEmery and his forty years with ZuhrahShrine and the Zuhrah Drum Corps. Iasked Dave to answer a few questionsabout his time in Zuhrah.

When did you join the Drum Corps? “Ijoined the Corps in the spring of 1974. Mostof today’s members weren’t even born yet.”

What prompted you to become aShriner? “I wanted to be a Shriner like myGrandpa since I was about 5 years old. I wasplaying with the Minneapolis MountedCommandery Drum Corps and the HennepinCounty Sheriff ’s Drum Corps. Both weremade up of Zuhrah Drum Corps members.”

Which Blue Lodge do you belong to?“I was Master of University #316 in 1972-73 and joined Anoka #30 over twenty fiveyears ago.”

What positions have you held with theZuhrah Drum Corps? “I served the DrumCorps as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President in 1980.I also served as Captainof the Drum Corps, 1984 to 86. I have alsoserved as Musical Director of the Corps andhornline Lieutenant.Never could say no.”

What other Shrine units do belong to?“I have been a member of ZARC for manyyears and Anoka Area Shrine Club (PP).”

Do you plan to stay with these units, clubs?“I hope to stay active with both unitsand Shrine Club as long as I am able.Thishas become a way of life and where couldyou meet a greater bunch of guys.”

Would you have any reason for leav-ing? “I’m not leaving.Unless I get thrown out.”

When and where did you learn toplay your instrument? “I started playingthe trumpet in about 5th grade and am stillblowing my own horn (mellophone).”

What is your fondest memory of theDrum Corps? “Back in the day we had sev-eral dinner dances each year.We were a closegroup. The characters I have met in the Corpswould fill a book.Very few of today’s memberswould remember any of them. BobbieRadabach, Buster Radabach and Tom Lutgenwould remember guys like Wally Hubbs, JoeJeremco, Hauken Saaby and on and on. Eachguys has a story, some printable and some not.We had fun and comradery. There were thefishing trips to Mille Lacs Lake. Bus trips toparades that took two coaches to handle thecrowd. We all paid for libations on the way tothe parade and usually it was a free bar on theway back. When we had to pay the huge feeof $1.00 per drink it helped keep the guyssober for the parade.Yes,$1.00 and we mademoney at it.Wives would get together before aparade and make sandwiches for a picnic afterthe parades. We were a close knit group.Midwest sessions were stag events andZuhrah would have twelve to thirteen char-tered busses to carry the troops. Competition

was not important but fun was. When wewould go to a Midwest, and we went everyyear,we would get together with Kartoum fromWinnepeg and literally party till dawn, Youalways left a Midwest with more friends thanyou started with. Fun was the most importantthing. On recent trips to Winnipeg I still look upold timers from their Drum Corps.”

What words of wisdom would youshare with the Corps? “Get back to havingfun. Competitions were fun for those thatenjoyed them but several of the old timers thatstill had a few good years left because of theintensity. We need to get back to caring aboutour brothers. We need a way to attract newmembers. We used to have huge Ceremonials(times have changed) and all the units wouldput on a show.We attracted members fromthe class because they could see what we did.Since Zuhrah has gone to the Cold Sandsmode units are unable to show off for the can-didates.Your only chance to impress them isthe day they come in.Posters, videos and pho-tos are ok but we need to show off the prod-uct.We each need to work on recruiting.”

“Am I glad I joined ‘World’s Most ModestDrum Corps’? You bet your ass.The Corpshas been a very important part of my lifeand will always be. I plan on marching aslong as these old legs hold up and I can stillblow my horn.” Dave Emery, Old Fart.

For those of us who know Dave, weknow that his service and dedicationto the Drum Corps goes beyond that.I asked Dave if he would list otherpositions and awards he’s received as aShriner and Mason. Here’s his reply.

“I just do things because I enjoy them. Ialso use the Masonic 24 letter alphabet; itdoes not include the letters between Mand P (N O).

“I was presented the Potentate’s Medal byPast Potentate Bob Alexander in 1991.Served as Deputy Chief of Staff 1990-92,Chief of Staff, 1993-95. Zuhrah Chaplain,2008 and presented the Divan Medal byPast Potentate Jim Bagwell. Zuhrah ImperialRepresentative, 2009.

Denise and I served as Potentate’s Aidesfor Past Potentate, Don Wurden, 2007.

“I received the Hiram Award from AnokaLodge #30 in 2013 and the Cryptic Councilof Mason Of The Year in 2014 at the GrandYork Rite in Rochester, Minnesota.

“I have served Columbian Chapter #60Royal Arch Masons as High Priest,Minneapolis Council #2 Cryptic Masons asIllustrious Master and an the present HighPriest of Anoka Shekinah #104 Royal ArchMasons. I am now on the officer line of theGrand Chapter of RAM of Minnesota. As Isaid,Masonic alphabet. There is more, but youdon’t do this for titles and awards.

“It has been one heck of a ride. I have metsome of the greatest people in the world andam privileged to be able to call them brotherand friend. This does not leave out man sweetladies. (How’s that for a save?).” Dave.

Congratulations,Dave,on forty years ofdedication and service to both theMasonic and Shrine communities. Here’swishing you many more years of the same.

MIDWEST SUMMER SESSIONSIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTAAugust 21 – 23, 2014

It took some doing to get out of townfor many of us who left on that Thursdaymorning of August 21st,a severe thunder-storm hit the Twin Cities during the morn-ing rush hour. For many a little creativedriving got you around all the backed uptraffic; accidents, standing water, etc.

Once cleared of the Cities a smooth, relaxing 4-hour drive to Sioux Falls, via 35South to 90 West, however, traffic delaysand detours marked the trail for thosewho followed Highway 169. I understandDick and Ruthie followed 169 whichadded an extra hour to their trip to SiouxFalls. Dick and Ruth were not alone, PastPotentate, Illustrious Sir Tony Krall andLady Bev made the same mistake, alongwith a few other from Zuhrah.

Upon our arrival at Zuhrah

Headquarters—the Sheraton Sioux FallsHotel—many of us made our way to theZuhrah Hospitality room, staffed andmanned by some of Zuhrah’s finest.Thiswould be the meeting place for many ofZuhrah’s visitors to Sioux Falls, a chanceto rest, imbibe at the well-stocked bar andtalk with others about the day’s activitiesand adventures.

Our first activity would be a Shrineparade that evening in Tea,South Dakota, asuburban community south of Sioux Falls.

This parade would be another first forthe Corps as we would be performingwith just the drumline. Not enough mem-bers of the hornline were able to makethis event, save for two horn players, PastPotentate, Illustrious Sir, Jef Lewis andBenny Thompson. Jef and Benny wouldact as our flagline, they would save theirhorn playing for a later time.

In the meantime it was up to thedrumline to soldier on for this parade;we were all up to the task.

Drumline Lieutenant, Ryan Lodgaard, would act as the Drum Major, along withplaying a snare drum.Ryan was the impe-tus to get the drumline to perform at theMidwest. He was confident the drumlinehad enough musical material to carry aparade and sound great.

The drumline consisted of GeneRindelaub and Chris Berglund on tenors,John Gomez on triple tenor, BruceLodgaard and Ryan on snares, DaveSagstetter, Captain Mike Leier and DickLarson, bass drums, Jason Sagstetter, cymbalist and Drew Sagstetter, bells.

It is important to note that havingDrew was the key to making this all cometogether. With Drew’s expertise on thebells he was able to fill in for the hornlineby playing our signature tune,“Billboard”or as we call it, “No. 7”, as well as ourdrumline favorite,“WipeOut”.

Although the parade was in theevening, the humidity was very high, withtemps in the mid-80’s, the key was tokeep hydrated,El Riad Shrine provided uswith plenty of bottled water.Another pluswas the school bus that transported usfrom the hotel to the parade start had airconditioning. This would prove most ben-eficial to us when we finished the parade.

Upon arrival in Tea, we noticed thiswas a new community, many new homes, with many still under construction,need-less to say that we were all a bit skepticalthat there would be many people alongthe parade route. Our skepticism was laidto rest at the start point of the paradeand we made our first turn onto the mainportion of the parade, we were happilysurprised to see the streets of Tea linedand filled with locals and Shriners alike.

With PP Jef Lewis and Benny Thompsonas our Color Guard,Ryan called us to atten-tion, forward march, down the street, thenrolloff into No.7.We were told the paradewould be a mile long. We’ve marched in pre-vious parades that were a mile long; theymust have a different (longer?) measure-ment for a mile in South Dakota.

It was the heat, humidity, the continuousplaying and the length of the parade thatslowly began to take a toll on all of us;handsget tired, missed beats, heavy legs and tiredshoulders from the weight of the instru-ments.With the end in sight, and with thehelp of an enthusiastic crowd and otherproud Shriners cheering us on we managedto cross the finish line with our sweaty fezzesheld high,we all managed to pull through.Westarted together,we finished together.

After a short respite to down a few gal-lons of water,we rested in the coolness ofthe air conditioned bus before making ourway back to our hotel. Our driver,howev-er,had another idea.As we made our wayfrom the parade he made a wrong turnand put us back into the parade! Needlessto say we had more than a few curiouslooks from the people along the fewblocks we traveled. We could all read their

minds,“Why is there a Sioux Falls schoolbus, filled with people in a Shrinersparade?” In the meantime, we all sat backand enjoyed ourselves, if we have to do aparade over again, this is the way to do it!Our driver eventually found a side streetto get us off the parade route and wemade our way back to Sioux Falls.

Although our experiment as a drumline parade unit was worthwhile, wemissed our brothers in the horn line, together,we are the Zuhrah Shrine DrumCorps, let’s work on keeping it that way.

The next day, Friday, many of us tookin the sights of Sioux Falls. In fact, a fewof us ventured to downtown SiouxFalls to view the city’s namesake.

Later that evening the Drum Corpswould also venture into downtown SiouxFalls for a little barnstorming! Because itwas a beautiful evening and many of thelocals and visiting Shriners were seatedoutdoors in bar or restaurant patios,Captain Mike decided that the best placefor us to perform would be outdoors.

We made our way to an open area.Ryan, in his best command voice and overthe din of the traffic and people movingabout, introduced us to the crowd. Sincewe were wearing our fezzes many Shrinersin the crowd were excited and proud tosee a Shrine unit about to perform.

Ryan called us to attention, and we leadoff with, down the street, Apollo, No.5,Saints,WipeOut, Roll Out the Barrel andNo.7. Our rendition of WipeOut wasmost certainly a crowd favorite, Drew’smastery of the bell keys during WipeOutgot the crowd pumped for more. Jef andBenny joined us on their mellophonesduring our rendition of ‘when the saints gomarching in’,drum solo’s by Ryan on snaredrum and John on the triple tenors creat-ed a lot of excitement and the crowdcheered us all on.We made three morestops and after each stop the crowdwhooped and hollered with approval forour performance.

Our last stop for the evening would bethe El Riad Shrine Center where manyNobles from across the Midwest hadgathered for fun and fellowship.Apparently our notoriety performing indowntown had preceded us. When wegot off the bus, drums in hand, everyoneknew who we were. After a quick libation,we made our way to the stage. You canwatch our performance on the ZuhrahDrum Corps Facebook page.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, JESSEJAMES DAYS, NORTHFIELD,

As they have done for the last nine yearsGreg and Deeann Lufkin open their homeand invite the Drum Corps, family andfriends for a post parade cookout. GregLufkin, who is Dave Emery’s son-in-law,is anAir Force pilot; his call sign is “Chef”.According to Deeann, Greg looks forwardto this cookout every year because Gregloves to cook—and for a lot of people, evenbetter! Our thanks to Greg and Deeann;we appreciate your hospitality, what a greatway to end our parade season.

As was the case in Sioux Falls, Ryanwould pull double duty as our DrumMajor and snare drum player. Our ColorGuard was once again manned by threemembers of the Zuhrah Patrol, BillAshbach, Fred Sibben and Roger Jones.Great job as always, gentlemen.

Ryan did a fantastic job as Drum Major, calling commands and sounding off forthe next tune for the full Corps to play.Ryan did this all without missing a beat onhis snare drum. Now that’s talent!

The Northfield parade is always a funparade, the streets are filled with appre-ciative fans.To hear their applause as wego marching by is very humbling. It makesyou proud to be a Shriner.

Nobles of Zuhrah, here’s your chanceto join the Drum Corps, this is youropportunity to pick up a horn (we haveone for you),get those lips in shape, grab a

Greetings from the Horsemen! As you are reading this, the weather has

certainly left Summer and Fall is now uponus. It is a nice time to be at the Ranch andenjoying fellowship with other Shriners bythe fireplace in our club room.

Enjoy watching hors-es,have fun sitting around a fire with a bev-erage, take in the country air, sights, andsounds of the Ranch, and partake in goodfellowship with other Shriners. Please callBrother Horseman Rick Heimark at 612-965-7504 or [email protected] tolet us know so that we can be sure to wel-come you warmly. Or…just come outalmost every Wednesday mid-afternoonthrough the evening (holidays are anexception). We have fun with the horses, enjoy hanging around the ranch, and havedinner catered in to add to the fun and fel-lowship.Dinner is just $8 with the excep-tion of the second Wednesday eachmonth where for $10 we have a steak din-ner.Come join us!

RECENT HAPPENINGS

Meeting with Three Rivers ParkDistrict

As many of you know, the ZuhrahHorseman Ranch backs up against the1,200-acre Lake Rebecca Park, which hasmany miles of horse riding trails. We cer-tainly enjoy and benefit from having directaccess to the Park horse trails. The ThreeRivers Park district is in the middle of ahuge effort to make all trails (horse, bicy-cling, hiking, etc.) more environmentallyfriendly and sustainable as required by theState of Minnesota. The implication of thisis that sections of the trails will have to bere-done and re-routed so as to meet themandated guidelines.Lake Rebecca Park isthe first park in the Three Rivers ParkDistrict to embark upon this effort,so it isgetting considerable attention and watch-ing from regulators and other parks.

On 13 August, a Three Rivers ParkDistrict team charged with this task metwith the Horsemen to review what theyare trying to achieve, discuss the criteriaunder which they have to work, talkabout the pros and cons of variousoptions, and brainstorm on other possi-ble options. The meeting with theHorsemen was the first of a series ofmeetings the Park District will have withusers of the park. The Park team will thensummarize all of the inputs into one

overall trail plan proposal for submissionto the Park District Board for decision.

Movie Night at the Ranch15 August was another Zuhrah Shrine

“Movie Night at the Ranch” featuringthe animated Disney hit FROZEN. Themovie, popcorn, and root beer were allfree and for something other than pop-corn and root beer, everyone wasencouraged to bring a cooler with theirown treats and beverages. Blankets andyour favorite chair were also in order. Before the movie began at dusk, theevening also included hayrides aroundthe ranch. In total, over 180 people werein attendance, which easily topped lastyear’s mark of 160 people. AND, therewere quite a few new faces to meet andgreet. Special thanks to the Guardians, the DeMolay, all of the other membersof the Zuhrah family that made theevening a success. Below are a few pho-tos of all the fun.We are already lookingforward to next year’s event!

Midwest Shrine AssociationSummer Session

Following the early July ImperialSession, the Horsemen continuedpracticing and preparing for theParade and Drill competitions thatwere held at the Midwest Shrine sum-mer session in Sioux Falls, SouthDakota, on 21-23 August. FourteenHorsemen and ten horses made thetrip to Sioux Falls. We enjoyed seeingall of the other horse units andShriners that were there and had funsharing fellowship. And “to put icing onthe cake,” the Horsemen won FirstPlace in both Parade and Drill compe-titions! New this year was a greatchange to the competition awards.Instead of trophies, each winning andplacing team received certificates rec-ognizing their accomplishment and themoney what would have purchasedtrophies was instead donated to theShriners Hospitals on behalf of theteam receiving the certificate. Thischange was enthusiastically receivedby all present! Below are some photosof the parade, the drill, and the awardspresentation. And after giving a win-ning Drill performance, the horsesmet with some of their fans.

ParadesBy the time you read this, the 2014

parade season will have come to an end.To wrap up the season, the Horsemenparticipated in the Dassell parade on 30August, in the Wayzata parade on 7September, and (possibly) in thePlymouth parade on 27 September (asof this writing, the Plymouth parade hadnot been confirmed).

A big thrill for the Horsemen washaving Horseman Jeff Eidem rejoin theParade team at the Dassell paradeafter a couple of year’s absence.A veryserious automobile accident took Jeffout of thesaddle whilebones andbody healed.Jeff is stillrecover ingbut he wasexcited tobe back inthe saddleagain.

Cowboy Brunch14 September saw another outstand-

ing Cowboy Brunch at the Ranch.About150 people showed up to enjoy the food, fun, and fellowship. $8 for adults and $5for children (under 5 years old werefree), enabled one to enjoy scrambledeggs (with and without peppers &onions), hash brown potatoes (with andwithout peppers & onions), breakfastpotatoes, sausage, pancakes, mixed fruit, assorted pastries, juice, milk, and coffee. And new for this Brunch, biscuits andgravy were replaced with eggs benedict! Before, after,or instead of breakfast, horserides were given throughout the morningin the outdoor arena at the Ranch.Theevent was a lot of fun for all and manythanks go out to Horseman Chef MaxDowns and his team of able assistants.

Around the RanchA few tidbits of other significant

things happening at the Ranch.First, the Horsemen realize that in

order to continue winning in Parade andDrill competitions,we must increase ouroverall skill level so as to keep pace withother Shrine mounted units. To help usachieve that goal, Horseman CaptainBob Gretton arranged for Joe Thomas

Mechanical and Autobodydone right by your Noble

to conduct a training session at theRanch on 3 September. The trainingfocused on many of the basics of goodhorsemanship with Joe identifying waysto improve in each of them. The sessionwas very well received and each of usHorsemen have plenty to work on andpractice. The plan is to have Joe backagain in October for further training andthen again in the Spring for tune up andtraining prior to next year’s parade anddrill team season.

Second, those of you who come to theRanch will see a new tractor! After 15 orso years of hard service, the existing trac-tor was “giving up the ghost” requiringmore and more repair and maintenance. We were fortunate to be able to obtain anew (never used) 2013 Kabota tractor ata good price. The new tractor has theperformance and features needed tokeep the Ranch in good running order.

And last, but not least, is theHorsemen’s quest for new material toput into our performances. Picturedbelow is Horseman Brad Roberts tryingout some new material for the enjoy-ment of the watching crowd. NoteBrad’s great riding positioning…his

body is straight and vertical with thehorse’s front legs, and while Brad is not“in the saddle” he is certainly not out ofit either. However, more practice isneeded since the loss of the Stetson hatcould lose points for style.

In ClosingLet’s remember to keep all of our

brothers in our thoughts and prayers.Several are recovering or have hadhealth issues over the past month.

On Behalf of the Zuhrah ShrineHorsemen “America’s Second FavoriteCowboys,” we thank you —

Batman and Robin

Due to the Workhorse AnnualRound-up conflicting with theCeremonial Unit meeting inSeptember (for the third straightyear), the ranks at the CeremonialUnit Stated Meeting were a bit thin. Itis our hope that the Posse can settleon a date other than the third Tuesdayin September for next year’s round-up.

The Golden Valley VFW building mayno longer be an option for our monthlyCeremonial Unit meetings due to thepotential sale of the building. TheEntertainment Committee discussedholding a social event at the Old LogTheatre or another venue on the thirdTuesday in October (October 21), butthat is still up in the air. Watch your email and snailmail box for updates.

The next event on our calendars isthe Fall Ceremonial, which will be heldin conjunction with the MinnesotaMasonry “Big Tent Event” at theMinneapolis Scottish Rite on Saturday,November 15. The Director’s Staff isputting together details. More informa-tion will appear in next month’s Arabian.

The Ceremonial Unit will also beworking the bank at the Shrine Circus(when you get good at something, theykeep wanting you to come back and

The Imperial was a BLAST. I hauledpeople in from the airport and had somevery interesting passengers. One groupcame from Germany and had to fly overnineteen hours to get to Minneapolis. Ithink that is a record for someone trav-eling to an Imperial. Maybe they heardabout our lutefisk cooks up here.

The Ice Cream Social was a very wellattended event by Zuhrah families and alsothe Guardian members. I think we like icecream as a group. I was the lone represen-tative of the Guardians at Sioux Falls. It wasnot a real well attended event by Zuhrahunits with only five in the parades.

The search committee has come upwith a gem of a building for Zuhrah’sfuture home. It’s priced right, in excellentshape, has lots of green space, located at#169 & Highway 62 Crosstown in anindustrial area with a major hotel closeby. We will vote on this building at theOctober meeting, so be sure and attendit to get the votes needed to pass.

Upcoming EventsOur annual nut sales campaign is in

full swing and going great. I could stilluse some additional help selling productor the names of companies I can pursueto sell more product to. I already havesome new additions to the companieswe will successfully sell to to keep the“wolf” away from our door.

The Fall Ceremonial will be onNovember 15th at the Scottish Rite, Ihave a viable candidate I’m working on,do YOU?

The Circus is coming at Thanksgivingto Target Center. BE THERE.

And, of course, one of our own willbe Potentate in 2015. Congratulationsto Ross for his many years of hardwork to get to this point. I for onewant to help him in any way I can tomake his year a very successful one,I’m sure you will too.

The 2014 parade season is almost inthe books, and I wanted to share a cou-ple perspectives from a rookie. I havebeen in several parades before joiningthe Zuhrah Cycle Corp. and whether onfoot, float or riding in a car there is nocomparison to riding on a HarleyDavidson. In fact, the last couple timesthat I had to do a parade by any othermeans seemed almost “boring” in com-parison. Our parade/riding season hasbeen anything but boring! At one of myfirst practices I remember something ourCaptain said that stuck with me through-out the year, “Any jackass (substitutedword) can get on the highway and ridefast to a bar but it takes real skill tomaneuver a bike at slow speed through aparade.” I watched the Nobles of theZCC practice week in and week out notjust to improve their personal skills butto adjust their timing to function betteras a unit. This was as true for the mostveteran members of the unit as it was forthe rookies (perhaps even more so) andreminded me of the athletic habits nec-essary to win any championship.

I have no problem admitting that his-torically I have been a fair weather rider.I mostly rode alone for my own pleasureor occasionally sought “wind therapy”after a hard day or week. This year Ilearned it can be fun to ride with a groupand the motivation of riding for a cause. There is a big difference between beingcaught in the rain when out on a roadand starting out on a ride while it is rain-ing.But I picture hours later the childrenand their parents won’t understand whyZCC isn’t there if the rain stops beforethe parade starts. Two of the return tripsended up being a couple of the mostpleasant rides I took this summer.

I hope that you can make it to ourlast potential parade the AnokaHalloween Parade on Saturday,October25th, at 1:00 p.m. The theme for theparade is pumpkins with a black andorange color scheme. Windshields areto be painted as Jack-O-Lanterns (theCaptain has orange and black paint).Watch your email for details.

As for next parade season, I’m goingto work on my skills and continue topush myself out of my comfort zone,so that I set a new one. If you areinterested in becoming a member ofthis elite cycle corp. please contact ourPresident, Anderson, at (612) 669-7567 or any of our members.

Hello from the Zuhrah Flyers! As I write this, the look and feel of the

Fall season appears to be settling in.Thetrees are in the process of changing col-ors, the temperatures have begun to fall, ducks and geese in flight are beginning toappear in increasing numbers. The sea-sons, like the times, are changing.

Our unit has had a wonderful summerexperience, appearing in nine paradesthroughout the region. We have beenheartened by the participation of the fewmembers who generously gave of theirtime to drive carts in these parades. Welament the sorry fact that too many ofour members choose to do otherwise. The fact that it is so difficult to recruitdrivers from our ranks could be so easi-ly offset if each member on our rosterwould simply volunteer to drive in oneparade each season. We would have asurplus, not a deficit, of drivers.

To our unit's membership: Your helpis urgently needed. Please volunteer andwhen asked, say “yes” and honor yourcommitment.

The times in which we live are full ofopportunity as well as danger. Soon wewill be undertaking our annual Tree ofHope Christmas Holiday program whichresults in helping hospitalized childrenthroughout Minnesota with Christmasgifts. As Thanksgiving and Christmasapproach, we look forward to renewing

bonds of family, friends and traditionsthat have sustained us throughout ourlife experience.

We are also aware that these timesrequire the best efforts from each of usto do all that we can do to promotepeace, protect our nation and freedomseeking people everywhere. The sorryreports of radical, insane extremists whohave no regard for human life and liber-ty only confirms what we already know:eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.Remember to vote this November; it isa right and privilege that was paid forwith the lives of too many men andwomen who have served our countryand paid the supreme price for liberty.

Our best wishes to each of you,our fellow Masons, Shriners and yourfamilies.

Happy Landings!

Hello! To begin with there has beensome speculation as to who shall be thescribe for the WSSC. Since the passingof our illustrious friend and primescribe, Mr. Tom Parry, for the WSSCclub, I thought that I could lend a help-ing hand to arouse our membership foranother Scribe/Editor as a fill in scribeto help cover our activities as best I canfor now. Being that I am a WSSC mem-ber,Mobile Nobles and ZARC I thoughtthat I could give it a try. I have been amember of those clubs for many years, and I certainly honor all of their causes.

Our WSSC membership, along withthe other clubs or units, has been downsome and I think that if we all help to bol-ster their status it is well. Our Septembermeeting at the Hopkins VFW Club wasreasonably attended and we could usemore of the members to enjoy the fel-lowship. Our stated meetings remaineddark through most of the summermonths. I once again give thanks to ourhonored members, Jim and Elaine Snyder, for offering to hold a wonderful picnic onSaturday, August 16, 2014, at their niceresidence and patio along with prime ribsand the trimmings. Now it is time to pickup the action as best we can through therest of the 2013/14year.

It is realized that a number of ourmembers do go south from mid-fallthrough to the spring and that does notmean that we should falter. Further toassist those who are not being snowbirdsshould encourage those who do to giveus at home some feedback for theArabian news as to what interests thatthey have to offer. We had an interestingtalk by Chuck Wright at our Septembermeeting about the progress that theZuhrah Divan is suggesting for our newpossible headquarters for the Temple, sobe it, and we understand that the Zuhrahmembership will vote on this at theZuhrah October stated meeting onOctober 10, 2014, at the Crowne PlazaMinneapolis West;dinner at 6:00 p.m.andmeeting at 7:00 pm. Please come to ourWSSC stated meeting at the HopkinsVFW Club on October 17, 2014, at11:30 a.m., for fellowship and lunch.

OCTOBER 2014 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 13

ZUHRAH SHRINE CLUBS

The annual fish fry at the MississippiRiver Park in Anoka was more than youcould ask for. Many walleyes gave theirlife to support this fantastic party! Thepark was in its full glory, there were chil-dren on the playground, almost all of thetables in the shelters were in use, manyof our old friends were at the party andthe weather was perfect. Thanks to ourchefs, Dick Lehmann and Ken Rousch. They started with onion rings then themain dish of walleye fillets that had a hardtime fitting on a plate and still leave roomfor the potato salad.LeAnn Lehmann andPaula James made sure every ear ofsweetcorn was freshly shucked, cooked, soaked in butter, kept hot and ready togo.A big thank you to all the club mem-bers who contributed the hors d’oeu-vres and endless supply of desserts.

The day was perfectly concluded byour potentate,Ted Martz, who explainedthe pros, cons and finances involved inthe possible purchase of a new home forZuhrah. Ross Hjermstad presented hisplans for two trips in 2015. (If youmissed the Fish Fry watch the calendarnext year at this time.)

Our October meeting will be a stagevent to be held at a new place for us,Willy McCoys—a bar and grill locatedin the strip mall at the corner of SunfishBoulevard and Highways 10 & 169 inRamsey. The patients at the hospital had agreat summer with many camps andprograms for them to attend. Thereare some videos available to watch onthe hospital web sites.A very fun playwas performed during Imperial, and ison the website.

The WGA board is preparing to startthe process of getting the ChristmasStockings ready to distribute in December.Any donations with this in mind would begreatly appreciated. The most challenging, are the ones for the teenagers, especiallythe boys. Hand-held games are a hit withthis age group,as are small remote controlvehicles. The girls like hair items, nail polish, etc. Books like Sudoku, crosswords, wordfinds, etc are also popular items. It’s hard tobelieve it’s already time to be thinkingabout Christmas already.

Right now we are in need of color-ing books, crayons, activity books, etc.Decks of cards are another good idea.We will need these items for theStockings also. It is getting close totime to get the mitten & hat tree outagain, so mittens, hats and scarves aregoing to be in demand again.
