WHAT WE WILL WE CAN

The days are really warm lately and the parades and golf tournaments are in full swing and I hope you arewell and are enjoying each and every day. As I write this we are looking forward to attending Tigris TemplesPotentate’s Ball with Noble Jim Rennie and Lady Barb.

We will be driving to Kingston to be briefed on the plans made by the Kingston and District Shrine Club for theSpring Ceremonial and from what I already know, it promises to be a great event. So don’t miss it.In early May we were in Montreal for the Annual Hospital Seminar where we presented cheques totaling more

than $150,000. A large part of the donation was presented by the Port Colborne Shrine Club that you mightremember from our last issue of Papyrus, congratulations to the Nobles there. We sent members of your Divan and their Ladies to Montreal to represent us at the Karnak Potentate’s Ball.

Visiting is an important part of our Shrine and also our Masonic Fraternity and we have always enjoyed meetingnew Nobles and Ladies as well as renewing old friendships. We travelled to the New York Ontario Shrine Association in early May that was held in Syracuse, New York and

several Imperial Divan members were in attendance. The Imperial Sirs have some great plans for membership, sowe would urge our Nobles to get on the Internet at “BeaShrinerNow.com”. By sharing our knowledge with ourLodge members we can increase our membership to enrich and perhaps define our lives in an unselfish manner bysharing with others what we really do. We certainly do more than wear funny hats and drive little cars. We need to talk up our Children’s Hospitals

every chance we have. Remember the phrase now is “without regard to the parent’s ability to pay”. As you know,we look after children that other hospitals often give up on.We have secured a restaurant in Indianapolis for the Sunday evening dinner. It is Ike and Jonseys’ and only a

short distance from our hotel. We will be the only customers at the restaurant. The theme will be a 50s/60s nightand we will dress the way many of us did so many years ago. So get out your togs and be young again, at leastfor the night. We have learned that the Shrine Hospital in Minneapolis established close ties with the Mayo Clinic Care

Network. This will be interesting should this association expand in many other centers throughout our hospitalsystem. The next big news is about our newly designed Circus. We have negotiated 5

locations in the GTA for a total of 27 performances. We will ask for strong supportfrom all our Clubs as well as our Ladies groups. We are looking forward to this newCircus. A large cat (lions and tigers) is part of this show and promises to be awinner. Information will be available soon. Remember we need help for firewatch. At the moment our search for new premises goes on and we will know very

soon the outcome about one particular building we have offered to buy.So please enjoy your Shrine and remember: “WHAT WE WILL WE CAN”

RECORDER’SMESSAGE

First, let me bring you all up to date on our financialsituation. Let me start by assuring you that we are solventwith respect to our General, Transportation, Lottery, U.S.

and Club accounts and we do not owe a dime to anyone. We will, however, experience a cash flow problem due to the

fact that income will be down this year because we do not havea Fantasy Show or Football game in the 2013 program. OurCircus is not the same as in the past and we have been told toexpect an income of only $60,000 for 2013 which is a long wayshort of the total income from the 2012 Circus which generatedfor Rameses approximately $190,000 which, believe it or not,was the least we have ever raised on our Circus in the last 20years. As I’m sure most of you are aware, Xentel, our telemarketing

group, sold out to a company called I-Mark and they aredifferent (enough said at this time). This year’s Circus is run by adifferent partnership and there will not be telemarketing as wasdone in the past, it will be done by computer and frankly it’s abit deep for me, but they seem to think it will work, we shallsee. Now, to the current investment portfolio. In my last report to

you in the May issue of Papyrus, I informed you on February13th, 2013 that the total value of your financial investment was$8,598,741.70. Be advised that as of March 14th the total valueof our investment is $8,673,313.00. That’s an increase of$74,572.00 in one month. It won’t necessarily follow thispattern every month but I sure hope the Noble that hinted atthe first sale meeting that we would likely fritter this moneyaway, is reading this. We have looked at several properties but only two have

captured our attention and we have put forward a conditionaloffer on one of them. It is within the boundaries we advised youof at the November 2012 meeting and the asking price is alsowithin the amount we indicated we would have to spend onour new digs. Be advised that if (and I repeat if) it goes through, the property will require major renovations, but again theamount in question should keep us well within the amount wefeel is justified. Zoning is a major problem with this propertyand if we can’t get it changed we will have to move on and getour deposit returned, however we have not given up looking atother properties in the meantime. The Potentate’s Ball is now past and our next important

function is our Special Ladies Luncheon on May 26th, 2013 at3100 Keele Street and we hope that all our Special Ladies canbe here so that we can entertain them once again. Please letthe office know if you plan to be here so that we can preparefor your annual visit. You are all very special to us so please tryto attend. I must admit that where as I do recognize most ofyou, there are some that I just can’t place and if it looks like I’mignoring you, I’m not. Just give me an elbow in the ribs to

remind me and be assured I’m looking forward to seeing youall. Please remember that the west side of 3100 Keele Street is a

mess and I suggest once again that you don’t park therebecause you will be up to your ankles in mud. The new ownershave not yet replaced the missing asphalt. On April 29th I have a meeting with the new owners of 3100

Keele Street and I will bring the parking repairs to theirattention once again. They have verbally indicated to me thatthey are not in a rush to have us all leave Keele Street and theyhave stated that they would like us to stay on as tenants. We,the Shrine, would much rather have our own place by year end, however it’s an offer that may have to be looked at if we can’tget the new home we are looking for and our Lodges andScottish Rite may wish to look into this offer as a stop gapsituation. Don’t forget our Stated Meeting in Kingston, Ontario on

Thursday, June 6th, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Club Rooms afterwhich we can settle in for a fun weekend. We are, of course, hoping that we will have at least 100 Candidates for thissession so it’s up to all of us to get cracking and line up a fewnew Shriners. The Imperial Session also needs your support. Indianapolis is

only a good days drive from Toronto, approximately 450 milesI’m told, so let’s all try to support this most important meetingof the year. Not only do we elect a new Imperial Potentate butalso we very often make changes to the Imperial By-laws. It’srumoured that, due to the conflict with the Grand Masters ofArkansas and South Carolina that, a motion may be presentedfor a vote to go to the street in those two states for Shrinemembers. Now whether you are for that or against it, itrepresents the thin edge of the wedge in the relationshipbetween their Grand Lodge and the Shrine. Fortunately we havein Canada, Grand Masters and Potentate’s who have a goodworking relationship and frankly we are all just too busy to getinto this petty one-upmanship. I know and respect that ourGrand Master is the head of Masonry in Ontario and I supporthis position as such and I do believe he respects the Shrine aswell. Is it any wonder that countries go to war when weMasons can’t agree on simple common sense issues? It makesme wonder about the 5.P.O.F. A trip to the woodshed may bethe answer for these “Masons”.On May 8th, 2013 the Divan will visit the Botox Clinic in

Sudbury to take part in our annual visit with the Sudbury ShrineClub. At this time, the Club will donate a cheque to the localhospital to help offset the cost of the Botox injections ourShrine children in the Sudbury area received locally instead oftaking the long drive to Montreal. Simply put its just way moreconvenient and economical as well. As usual, we will top up theClub donation by adding a few dollars to the total. Note, all thismoney comes from our Transportation Fund. I wish to thank every Noble for your support of Rameses

Shrine and I do appreciate your hard work on behalf of eachother and the nearly 500 kids that are in our care. I wish you all a happy and healthy summer and thanks for

just being Shriners and Shrine Masons.

Can you believe that we are half way through our Shrineyear and now we come into our busy time! A very warm welcome to all our new Shriners. Hopefully

you will join us for our Church Service at the Kingston ShrineClub on Sunday, June 9th, at 9:00 a.m. We hope to have a DrumHead Service followed by a country breakfast. All are welcome. I hope that we will have a good turnout of Nobles and their

families at both the Spring Ceremonial and the ImperialSessions. Both of these events are a great opportunity to meetother Nobles from all over and make new friends.

To our Nobles and their families who are not well, I pray foryour return to good health. If I can be of any assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me. Nobles, let us never forget our Shrine obligation. Please stay

involved and help to promote Shrinedom.

As I write this, you are reading or have read the last articlein which I hoped and wished for green grass, singingbirds and warm weather. We didn’t get the warm weather

but we did get the birds, they don’t sound very happy but theyare here. Robins, Jays, Doves and one Blue Heron after the fishin the pond.It is a busy time, the Potentate’s Ball is just over, Lady Helen

and I had the honour of hosting this event. We had a good turnout with many NYOSA Shrine Centres represented, along withmany members and visitors from Ontario and Quebec. A great

time was had by all, as for you that missed this gathering tohonour Ill. Sir Terence Lamping, you missed a great time offellowship, celebration and a great meal.In March, my Lady and I attended the Installation of Lady

Joyce Anderson-Johnson as Queen of the Daughters of the Nile.We wish Queen Joyce and her hard working Ladies a great year.Keep up the good work on behalf of our Hospitals and theShrine Children.Again this year Lady Helen and I had the honour of

attending on behalf of Rameses Shrine and our Potentate, theInstallation of Officers of Bokhara Court #22. What a well runand impressive ceremony. The Ladies of the Court support Shrine Hospitals in many

ways. Good Luck High Priestess Lady Barb Van Der Heyden andbest wishes to you and your Court.

Since my last notes in the Papyrus, I have been very involvedwith the Shrine.I had the opportunity to attend the Oriental Guide Seminar

in Tampa and while there we also toured the ShrinersInternational Headquarters.Shriners International Headquarters covers 85,000 sq. ft. and

employs more than 250 people. Shrine Headquarters is home totwo separate corporations, Shriners International, the fraternity, and also Shriners Hospitals for Children, the philanthropy. The Oriental Guide Seminar was three days of meetings from

8 to 5 each day and it was here we met up with ourcounterparts from the U.S. and had much information toexchange on our own Club activities.

The round-table discussion I find is important to learn whatis working at other Clubs. The Seminar itself was veryinformative. Subjects covered were Leadership, Membership,Shrine Law, Protocol, Budgets and Finance. The speakers wereImperial Officers Gary Bergenske, Jeff Sowder and Bill Bailey.Lady Edith also had 3 full days of meetings covering

Protocol, Membership and Mentoring and alsoCommunications. There was much to learn in such a shortperiod of time.Lady Edith and I were invited by Noble Robert and Sherrin

Whiteford to attend a dinner in honour of Imperial Potentate SirAlan Madsen at Egypt Temple in Tampa. We enjoyed thefellowship and dinner and met many Shriners and their Ladies. The following morning we headed home.Nobles, the Special Ladies Luncheon is coming up on Sunday

May 26th at 3100 Keele Street. Also, the Spring Ceremonial in Kingston is fast approaching

and is sure to be a fun-filled weekend. Get your registrations inearly. SEE YOU THERE!

TREASURER’SREPORT

After reviewing the actual vs. budgeted dues number forthis year, it is readily apparent that not everyone has paidtheir dues. In this regard I would like to ask you to please

pay ASAP. The fundraiser called Direct Appeal should meet budgeted

revenue, which will help replace some of the revenue we arenot going to get with the other telemarketing fundraisers. The Circus is coming to town very soon. Nobles this is a fun

event. Noble Rick Kubiak could use your help with fire watch.

Come out and meet and make some new friends whileattending. I hope all of you and your families have a great and safe

summer. What we will we can.

Please check the schedule above for times and duty. If for any reason you cannot attend on the date posted pick another date we are always shortfor the Fire Watch, if you can spare the time we sure could use you. All those on Fire Watch should be signed in and at their stations 45 minutesprior to show time as technically the public cannot be in the tent without the Fire Watch in position. As always meals will be served to Shrinersand Shrine Ladies that are attending back-to-back Circus performances.

Nobles, I know that I am asking for a great deal of each Club and Unit, with some being asked to comeout even more than in the past. During the last few months, I have been traveling to theClubs and Units; some have had Master Mason nightswhich are a very good way to get the membership back

up. We lose about 170 members each year. Other Clubs talkedabout our Montreal Hospital and what we do for the children. Now that summer is coming there will be BBQs, picnics, and

golf tournaments. This is a good way to get a Master Mason tocome out and have some fun or take the family to your picnic. As you know it is all about having fun. At the Assistant Rabban Seminar the talk was about the

Membership, Fun, Fellowship, and how to get Membership tocome back. I know that it is a tough task but we have to try. Nobles, the Circus is coming to the Toronto area on June 21,

and will be here for 7 weekends and Nobles, we sure need yourhelp for Fire Watch. It is a big fundraiser for the Shriners. Thelocations are in this edition of Papyrus and when the differentClubs and Units will be asked for their support. I would like to thank Noble Terry Fulton and Lady Helen for a

job well done at the Potentate’s Ball, and also the Nobles andtheir Ladies for supporting it. I know that Ill Sir Terry and LadyJoyce enjoyed it. Nobles, be sure to review beashrinernow.com or

It has been an exciting time since my last post in the Papyrus.Lady Jackie and I had the great opportunity to travel toTampa, Florida for the Oriental Guide Session. It was a very

informative and interesting seminar covering such topics asLeadership Skills, Shrine Law, and Membership. The Ladies alsohad an intensive program that included Communication,Fundraising, Membership, Protocol, Mentoring Program, LadiesProgram Ideas, Imperial First Lady Program, and ShrinersInternational. This seminar was a great starting point for assisting me in

understanding what it really means to serve as a representativeon the Divan as well as a great opportunity to meet mycounterparts throughout Shrinedom. Recently, Lady Jackie and I attended the Lakeshore Ladies

Night and we were most impressed with the Local Chapter ofthe DeMolay Boys. These young men in most cases will becomeMasons and hopefully Shriners. They did a wonderful job ofserving our dinner. Afterwards, upstairs in the Lodge Room theyperformed one of their degrees. Their work was exceptional and

these young men are very worthy of our support. If you get achance to see these young men in action, please do so. If youknow of a young man, your son, grandson, nephew orneighbours encourage them to investigate the opportunity. Ifyou would like more information on the Order of DeMolay, please contact Noble Ron DeMerchant, President of LakeshoreShrine Club at 905-885-1482. Spring has arrived and now is the time to travel and visit

other Shrine Clubs. So Presidents, gather up your Vice-Presidentsand other members of your Club and visit your neighbours. Theywill be happy to see you, and you will be even happier that youmade the effort to go out and visit. I look forward to seeing all of you and your Ladies at the

Howdee kind folks. Glad to see you here. I am on the porchof J. Johnson’s General Store with the one gas pump, enjoying the warm sun in summer, here at Burning Sands.

I have to mention that Cuzin Zeke fell into a vat of cornwhiskey last week. Some men tried to pull him out, but hefought them off and he drowned. We had him cremated and heburned for 4 days. Us Hillbillies are into the busy season with parades and

circuses. Our float has side benches for us Hillbillies and anouthouse in front for our President Rik Kubiak to use. Then wehave a motorized bathtub taxi, a small tractor and an outhouseon a go kart. They zoom around our float while we play BlueGrass music and we get a lot of laffs. We enjoy keeping peoplehappy while paradin’ while we earn money to financiallysupport the Shrine Hospitals, who offer unique care for thechildren. We invite all Shriners to join us on our float. Wear yourFez. The dedicated Hillbilly Guys and Gals turn out no matter the

weather or distance. We are into our Spring Ceremonial inKingston June 6 to June 9 with the parade on Saturday. Wehope you will be there and look out for us. All our Shriner Cuzins have a great opportunity to join Clubs

and Units and become a valuable, needed member so that wecan support our Shrine Hospitals for the children. You can checktheir emails in front of the Papyrus and see which one youwould like to join. Some of you may want to join us Hillbillies as we are a wild

and crazy bunch of Guys and Gals and have a lot of fun. You donot have to be talented; just want to have fun while doinggood. If you want to join, contact President Noble Rik Kubiak at647-225-1171 or our Membership Chairman Noble Brian Korsonat 905-731-4355. Our Chow Down is coming up on Saturday August 24 again

at Beth and Jim Johnston Jr’s country spread, west of Stouffvillewhere they have their wonder dog, Yankee. We have good food, good fellowship and good fun. The Divan, guests interested inthe Shrine, Shriners and their wives interested in being a Hillbillyand many of our Cuzins from the Outhouses were there. Socome one, come all with your better half and enjoy a great time. We have a crazy initiation at the Chow Down for Guys and

Gals wanting to be Hillbillies. It was in the middle of a corn fieldwith bales of hay to sit on. You will split your sides laffing at theceremony. I am writing this here stuff slowly because some of us

Hillbillies cannot read too fast. Our Outhouse #3 in North Bay is having a barbecue on June

23 and Outhouse #2 in Sudbury has a great pig roast on July 25so if you are in the area, be there for a great time. Cuzin Bobby-Joe said her daughter had a baby this morning,

but she did not know if it was a boy or girl, so she didn’t knowif I was an aunt or an uncle. Well us Hillbillies would really appreciate the Units and

Clubs helping at the Circuses. Some Clubs were designated to

June 28-30, Powerade Centre July 5-7 and July 12-14,Interchange-Vaughan July 19-21 T.B.A. July 26-28 and MarkhamFair Grounds August 2-5. Be sure to check Billy Hill on Face Book for our past parades

and Club pictures. We wish all our Shriners and their families the best of health

and may the G.A.O.T.U. take a liking to you. Cuzin Clem was sitting in the doctor’s office in the waiting

room, sitting beside an old lady and the receptionist said tohim, the Doctor wants a stool and urine sample. Clem did nothear her and asked the old lady what she said. The old lady saidthey want your shorts.

On March 8th, 2013 suddenly andunexpectedly at the Hamilton GeneralHospital, in his 77th year, Noble Don

passed away. Loving Father of Jodi McDaniel (Todd), NancySandeman (Mark), and Grandfather of Kaliand Asia. Dear brother of Robert (Jean) andSandra Oliver (Bruce) with several nieces, nephews, and other family members. He willalso be sadly missed by many close friends. Don started his work career first as a

fireman with the Hamilton Fire Departmentin 1955 to 1957, then as a police officer with the Hamilton Police Servicesbefore ending his career as an Insurance agent with Gore Mutual and the Co-Operator’s insurance companies. He was a member of Hillcrest Lodge #594, Life member of St. John’s

Chapter #6 Royal Arch Masons, Life Member Godfrey DeBouillon Preceptory 33. Don Hutson became a Rameses Shriner in 1963 and a Member of our

Hamilton Club the same year. He also was an honorary member of AnezehTemple Mexico City and a honourary Life Member of Syrian Temple Cincinnati,Ohio. In reality, Don was far more than just a member of the Hamilton Club; hewas the Hamilton Club and our President in 1974. A great Shriner and mentor to us all that marched to his own beat and had

those leadership qualities that enticed others to emulate him. His farewell to uswas a perfect example of his strength of character. He requested a celebrationof his life rather than the usual funeral service and they came from far andnear to celebrate. On April 6th, 2013 at the Hamilton Shrine Club, family, Friends, Shriners and

a very special guest- a great Shrine Clown dressed in face, “Doc and Mini Doc”joined us to celebrate his life and remember this truly great Shriner. A veryunique farewell indeed! Noble Ken Cole, a close friend, had some great stories and memories

recalling how Noble Don was instrumental in makingbig improvements to the hall interior. Daughter Jodiwith support from her sister Nancy also spoke on theirDad’s behalf and told us what great a Dad/Granddadhe was. President Brian introduced our Ambassador and on

behalf of our Potentate Illustrious Sir Terry Lampingdaughter Jodi was presented with Don’s Fifty yearCertificate and Jewel. Noble Donald W. Hutson, we thank you sincerely for

the legacy you have left us as I recall one of your manywords of wisdom suggesting that while we are doing agood job, we need to work a little harder as we alwayscan do better.

Farewell Noble, Good Job!

Rest in peace,proud Shriner

Noble Frank Fielder’s vision for a golf course at Coldwater began with memoriesof his war years in Holland. Frank was a tank corps driver with the Three RiversRegiment of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps that liberated Apeldoorn,

Holland, in 1945. His tank was the first to cross the Apeldoorn River Bridge. After the war Frank was the owner-operator of an auto repair garage in Toronto,

but his passion for golf soon switched his considerable talent and energy to a newbusiness, Bonaire Golf Course, named after the Dutch island in the Caribbean. The titlewas in honour of the many friends Frank made inHolland. The name and philosophy were a good fit for Frank’s

vision. Bonaire, it means good air, in Dutch, started in1968 and grew from a virtual wasteland to the

spectacular oasis it istoday. The annual Sheba

tournament began in 1988when Frank and his sonRandy donated the greenfees as a fundraiser to godirectly to the ShrinersHospitals. Bonaire and Sheba have been Brothers eversince with lots of fun and laughs for all who participate. The Annual Sheba Golf Tournament celebrates its

25th Anniversary this year. It is estimated thetournament has raised in excess of $150,000 for the Shriners Hospitals.Noble Frank passed away in 2008. To honour his memory and his contribution to

the Shrine, the tournament has been acclaimed as the “Frank Fielder Memorial Event”.The tradition of this annual event carries on with Randy Fielder, who vows, “to

continue this fund raising tournament as long as Sheba wishes.”Bonaire Golf Course is easily accessible from Highway 400 North at Exit 137.The Chairman of the September 13, 2013 golf tournament is Noble Sandy Mealing,

By Noble Tom BrooksMUSKOKA SHRINE CLUB

Muskoka is, as we presume, typical of all Clubs at thistime of the year, in that period considered “the lullbefore the storm”. The storm being the upcoming

Spring Ceremonial i.e. the opening of the floodgate for newShrine activity, and the lull being the quiet workings of Clubsto prepare as best we can.We are moving on as follows:1. We see our 38 Unit working diligently to fully overhaul

their 18-wheel transport trailer. The last one serviced us for35 years. This is the vehicle that hauls our 1938 fire engine, our President’s showcasing golf cart, and our dozen Honda50cc motorcycles of our Muskiter Unit. Their plans are forcomplete exterior murals, scenes to catch the eye and, a realextra for our many parade showings. Planned to have thisready for the Ceremonial so if you are at Kingston then get aglimpse and admire the work as only Shriners can do.2. Our Shrine Ladies are steadily organizing a Gala Spring

Garden Party and, it’s a certainty that they will raise bigdollar amounts to contribute to the new SHC Gait Lab inMontreal. They will also plan to have great fun andfellowship for a good cause, something that they are really

Muskoka Shrine Club keeps Moving Ongood at and could teach us male Shriners a lesson or two.3. Our Muskiter Bike Unit is also on the move, more bikes,

more members and, a great horde of Vidalia onions for salethis spring. Pushing onion soup, onion sandwiches, onionsalad, baked onions, tossed onion salad, you name it andMuskoka will deliver it with a breath reeking of onions. Goodfun and it works.4. Muskoka proper is heavy into an upgrade of Branding

Program with new awareness signage, free parking, etc., etc.and, our Club is in concert with this program as our part inmore awareness.5. Our 2013 Club President, Noble Grant Willard is also

very avant garde, a great motivator and, is always primed toimprove our image. We will have a full yearAnd so, we may be in a lull but not idle. We will be at the

Ceremonial with our Fez bells on, we will again hostour famous Gala Surf & Turf event in July, our well knownKen Kaye Memorial Golf Tournament will have a solidbooking and, in every way we will be at work to raise moniesfor the SHC and having fun in our great philanthropy.Greetings for a great summer and we do hope that visits

to Muskoka are on your agenda for 2013. We will welcomeyou with gusto and Shrine pride.

Ibelieve that catchphrase above, was first used as a marketingslogan for the phonograph way back in 1924. Well, we inNiagara have a new use for it. Barb Warman, our Lady Shriner has enough 100 Million

Dollar certificates she could paper her walls with them. For thepast 15 years our Chairmen have received cheques on amonthly basis from Barb. In fact her name is almost preprintedon the President’s monthly meeting agenda just waiting for theamount it’s so automatic. We may have to trademark the phrasewith a small change “the gifter that keeps on giving.” ThanksBarb and you know the kids really thank you too. We all love a party and a group of Nobles here are turning

partying into profit. The new unofficial group calling themselvesthe Niagara HospitalityUnit, started out byhelping in an electionhospitality suite.Thinking they were sohospitable, theydecided to get togetherand offer their servicesfor donations to theHospital orTransportation Fund.So far they havehelped out at threefunctions and evenproduced a logo. We’renot sure if it’s the workor the party they like.

Watch out for them sporting their spiffy new retro hospitalityshirts on your travels. Most of Niagara’s Special Ladies were treated to an early

Easter luncheon cooked and served by the Nobles of Niagara.Fresh flowers dressed up the hall along with aproned Noblesbut all of that had a hard time matching the lovely Ladies. Somesported Easter bonnets and all with spring smiles getting outtogether after the long winter. They were greeted, and thentreated by Noble and Lady Biggar to potted plants as a takeoutorder. President Gary and Ambassador Andy thanked them andtheir late husbands for laying a strong foundation making theClub as vibrant as it is today. Some of our wandering Nobles paid visits to the Shrine

Circus in Buffalo and to Erie’s Zem Zem Shrine Centre in mid-March. In Erie, the Irish were out in full force and filled their hallfor a Money Mania fundraiser. Three of our Nobles managed to

“The gift that keeps on giving” come away with alittle more US greenthan when theyarrived; and theyweren’t even Irish! To maintain our Irishfeelings acquiredover the afternoonwe had to make adinner stop at theIrish Times in Buffalo. It’s the pub acrossfrom Coca Cola Fieldthat we visited onour ball gameexcursion. By theway, another excursion is planned for August 9 this year, call theClub for details. The afternoon extended into the early eveningas we celebrated with the “Irish for a day” patrons. I don’treally remember if the following were the exact words spokenby “she who must be obeyed” when I arrived at home safe, thanks to our DD, but not too sound. “No matter how much youpush the envelope, it’ll still be stationery.” Take a few petitions and a copy of the Papyrus to Lodge and

show your Brothers what fun the Shrine is. No memory work orhard work, just fun, games and good feelings when we seepositive results happening with our kids in the hospital system. Speaking of hospitals, Shriners Hospital for Children - Erie,

less than 2 hours away holds their open house June 2. Stand upin Lodge and invite your fellow members for atour and see why we have so much fun infundraising. If they don’t bite at thatchance, have them bite on a juicyBBQ’d steak at our casual dinnermeeting this month. The residentsmoke eaters have the grill allshined up just waiting to sizzle somesucculent steaks for potentialShriners. Are you looking forward to the summer

off from all this hard partying work we do? Youwill have some time to brush up on the golf game, or even weta line or two; also give you a chance to get the grey matterworking on how we can grow this great group. We are such afun bunch why aren’t Masons knocking down our doors? Sellthem on a really great way to relax from the formality of theBlue Lodge but still maintain your principles while having a littlefun. Let’s follow the Ill. Sir’s motto, “What We Will We Can”;petition a potential prospect promptly to produce a proud, practicing Shriner.

Tampa. We noticed a few fezzes from northern jurisdictionsaround the room at the Egypt Temple, too. Some came down tovisit for a few months and decided to stay. Isn’t it wonderful tohave the opportunity to continue your Shrine activities whenyou move to a new area?A partnership opportunity is being explored with the Disney

organization. On March 18, Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell, GaryBergenske and I, along with staff from Leo Burnett, met withDisney World representatives to explore possible options. We arehopeful it will lead to a positive outcome for all parties. It is exciting to be part of a groundbreaking ceremony,

especially when the children who have received treatmentand/or are receiving treatment at that respective hospital areinvolved. About 12 Patient Ambassadors from the St. LouisShriners Hospital took the stage, and the microphone, and actedas the emcees during the groundbreaking ceremony for the newSt. Louis hospital at 2 p.m. on March 20. It was a cold, windyday, but the children’s enthusiasm warmed our hearts. ImperialSir Doug Maxwell and Lady Patricia, Imperial Sir Dale Staussand Lady Cheryl and Imperial Sir Jerry Gantt and Lady Lisaaccompanied Lady Jan and myself to the eventThat evening, our group of officers and ladies was hosted by

the Moolah Divan and their Ladies. The auditorium was filledwith Nobles and their Ladies from various Clubs and Units. Wewere especially impressed with the monies given to PotentatePatrick Hensley for the Temple’s transportation and hospitalfunds. This is a normal occurrence at their stated meetings.Members of the South Atlantic Shrine Association met in

Greensboro, NC, on March 22 and 23 for their mid-wintermeeting. North and South Carolina officers of RotaryInternational also happened to be gathering in the same hotel.A chance meeting with Rotary International President and CEORon Burton presented an opportunity to share ideas onmembership growth and retention.

Dear Fellow Nobles

It is almost time to “SEND IN THE CLOWNS”at the 139th Imperial Session inIndianapolis. Our Shrine Clowns will lead the

parade, and provide great fun for the crowds. We hope to set aGuinness World Record with the most clowns in a parade! TheLady Shrine Clowns will also be participating to help set theRECORD!We’ve attended several meetings and seminars lately – here

are some highlights:The Sports Seminar, held March 3- 6, featured guest speakers

Hunter Cannon and Hillsborough County Commissioner AlHigginbotham. Hunter is featured in some of our promotionalmaterials and is a patient at our Northern California hospital. His remarks proved to us, once again, that obstacles placed inour way are merely challenges to be met. Imperial Sir DaleStauss, Chairman, and his TEAM presented an inspiringprogram, enjoyed by everyone in attendance. If your game/eventwasn’t represented, make sure the manager or leader attendsnext year.Next we attended the Oriental Guides and Assistant Rabbans

seminars, which were held at the Airport Marriott in Tampa, FL,March 7 - 14. This training program has evolved considerablysince the first one I attended some ten years ago, and hasbecome a premier leadership conference. Imperial Sir JeffSowder, Chairman, and his TEAM provided training for the manyNobles and Ladies in attendance. If you’re AR or OG was unableto attend, sign them up for next year. This training has beenproven to strengthen Temple operations time and time again.Next on our agenda was attending Hejaz’ Potentate’s Ball in

The Legacy of Red Skelton Born the son of a circus clown in 1913, Richard “Red” Skelton was destined to

entertain the world. By age 15, Red was employed as a full-time entertainer, withassignments ranging from vaudeville to circus performances. It was not long untilRed’s slapstick comedic parodies captured the American public’s attention. In 1941,Red premiered his own radio show, The Raleigh Cigarette Program. Ten years later, CBSadapted the popular program for television, with Red as their first host televised incolour. By the 1950s, Red had expanded his performances and appeared in more than 30

MGM films, which included Having a Wonderful Time and Bathing Beauty. In additionto being a television and radio entertainer, Red was also a famed interpretive clownand, in 1989, was inducted into the International Clown Hall of Fame in Baraboo, WI. Near the end of his life, Red enjoyed the fine arts of writing, music and painting.

Some of his best work is displayed at the Red Skelton Museum, including scrapbooksand photos of his eclectic life. Brother Red is buried at the Forest Lawn Memorial ParkCemetery in Glendale, California.
