MARCH 2013 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 3

From the Potentate

Enthusment!Wow! It has been an incredible first

month as your Potentate. We have hada blast traveling all over the state doingofficer installations for your Units andClubs.Adding to the ‘enthusment,’ wasthe ability to get out to the Units andClubs, and meet so many Nobles andLadies whom I don’t normally get tosee and talk with. This has truly addedto my ‘enthusment.’

The Installation season all seemed tohit a crescendo at the 2013 HollywoodClassic Ball. It was incredible to see thetalent, energy, and ‘enthusment’ that theUnits and Clubs put into the cabanarooms. I am extremely glad that I didnot have to judge the rooms. I wouldlike to personally congratulate theChairmen for being able to repeat asthe Best Cabana Room. Now it is up tothe other Units and Clubs to dethronethem.

For Deb and me, the entire week-end of the Hollywood Classics Ball, farexceeded our expectations anddesires. We hoped the Units and Clubswould embrace the theme, and theydid. We hoped the banquet meal wouldtaste great, and we are hearing that itdid. As far as the entertainment, weknew we were taking it outside thebox, and we were hoping that it wouldbe well received. Again, the responsewas way beyond what we even daredto dream. It is not easy to hide a march-ing band, but we were very excited topresent for your ‘enthusment’ ThePRIDE of Minnesota, the University ofMinnesota Marching Band.

You might be wondering aboutthe word ‘enthusment.’ At the officerseminar, we were discussing the

energy, excitement, and enthusiasmbrewing in Zuhrah. Somehow, all ofthese terms have rolled into oneword—‘enthusment.’ This hasbecome the Zuhrah Strong mem-bership team’s new buzz word.

Zuhrah StrongZuhrah Strong is the new member-

ship imitative set forth by the member-ship team and the Divan. You will seemore about it other parts of thisArabian. You will also hear more aboutit at all meetings. We have some aggres-sive membership goals, and we can’treach those goals without the help of every Noble. If you have some time to help, send an email to [email protected]. We are off to a great start. At the FebruaryStated meeting, we read, voted on andapproved six new candidates and twonew affiliations. This makes 14 monthsin a row we have read petitions!

Just one of the Zuhrah Strong pro-grams is 2 for Dues. If you create orrestore two new Nobles in 2013,yourZuhrah dues for 2014 will be paid for.

Continued Enthusment:April is going to be Back to Lodge

Month. We will be extending invita-tions to the Masters and Wardens toattend our April meeting. Part of the‘Enthusment’ of Zuhrah Strong isincreasing our working relationshipwith our Lodges.

May is going to be Rememberyour Ladies Month; watch theArabian for more details.

June is Legacy Month. We have sev-eral ‘Enthusment’ events scheduled:Kids Trout Fishing at the Hospital, aFathers Day Twin’s Game, and we areputting together a special programfor all Nobles who submit a Legacypetition at the Stated Meeting in June.

As we continue to turn the calen-dar, we hit Parade Season. We wouldall love to come out and see yourUnit or Club in the Parade, so pleaseget your appearance requests turnedinto the Divan for approval.

God bless the children in ourHospitals, God bless the men andwomen who defend our borderboth near and far, God blessShriners International, and Godbless the United States of America.

Success is achieved and maintainedby those who try and keep trying.

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

We are looking forward to putting thiswinter in our midst away for anotheryear. We welcome the new ZuhrahShrine Potentate Al Niederhaus and hisstaff into their offices for the ensuing yearand wish them our best. We also wel-come our new ZARC team and are surethat this will be a great year for thisgroup to grow back into a strong andsuccessful shrine unit. We are here tosucceed in our efforts and with this teamI am sure that will do good as a unit.

Notice: We are informed by brotherStuart Cleaveland that there will be afree ham radio technician class to beheld on March 9 at Elk River,Minnesota, from 8 to 4 hours followed by a test at4:30 p.m. This is for those who maywant to be involved with Sky warnactivities. He will have to be informedby RSVP to find out how many wouldbe interested so he can send out studymaterials by email. This may be some-thing that could be a follow-up forsomeone into this field of activity.

Once again we of ZARC had a goodFebruary meeting, and it was exiting toobserve the amount of desire there wasto get our year 2013 year off to a goodstart. We had two Zuhrah Shriners whodid find time to come to our meeting andcertainly they had some anxieties to findout what our ZARC unit is all about.Theytook enough interest to become ournewest members. There was JimSchwanebeck who obviously has alreadyheld many jobs within the Shrine andMasonry and we are sure that he feltcomfortable with our activity. Then therewas Bob Huber who also had an interest-ing history. He is a retired fireman forMinneapolis, I believe, and says he hasother talents such as a producer of CDsand other digital media. He is talented inthe field of computers and their func-tions. He had expressed his desire toinclude ham radio into his future.

Bob Huber, Phil Epstein, Ken Skoog, DonWorden, Jim Schwanabeck, & Tim France

As has been mentioned in our pre-vious articles, we are open to allZuhrah nobles, where they can pres-ent their talents and want be recog-nized for their efforts to presentthem. This was the day that gave us anew officer lineup for the 2013 ensu-ing year. ZARC member, PP DonWurden, K0IYN, used his experiencesto install our ZARC officers at thismeeting. I am including some photos ofour group meeting and the two newmembers are included.

Scribe, Ken Skoog WØ[email protected]

As we trudge though the winter of2012-2013, we have now entered theslow period for the Ceremonial Unit. We’re more than two months from theSpring Ceremonial, and our last socialactivity – the Potentate’s Ball – is but afading memory of the wonderful tributeto Hollywood cinema and fun timeNobles, Ladies, families and guests had.Congrats to Ceremonial Unit/Legion ofHonor for tying Robbinsdale Area ShrineClub for 2nd place in the hospitality roomcompetition. The Sons of the Deserttheme was a big success. Thanks again tothe Nobles and Ladies in both units forthe delectable appetizers and libationsthat helped enhance the atmosphere.

It was also great to have an appear-ance by our own Pink Panther,Ceremonial Unit Past President GeorgeMiller, whose likeness Spanky painted onthe drop in the pool area. Great job onthe Hollywood sign with InspectorClouseau and the Pink Panther. I under-stand that even Illustrious Sir Al had ahand in painting it.

The next Ceremonial Unit StatedMeeting will be on Tuesday, March 19th,at the Golden Valley VFW, 7775Medicine Lake Road. Social Hour is at6:00, followed by dinner and the meet-ing. Wonder if we’ll have corned beefand cabbage and green beer.

No new report from the SunshineCommittee, so I’ll sign off this monthwith a wee bit ‘o Irish humor. PaddyO’Toole staggered out of the pub andgot into his car, where a police officersitting in his squad car across the streetobserved him.The officer came over toPaddy’s car and tapped on the window.Paddy rolled down the window and saidto the officer, “Shank God you’re here.Shomeone shtole my shteering wheel(hic),” to which the officer replied,“Paddy, you got into the back seat!”

Fraternally,

WOW, we are already intoFebruary of 2013, how time flies whenyou are trying to keep up with therest of the world. First off we have anew slate of officers for 2013,begin-ning with our new President DavePonthan,V. P. Mark Treager, Bruce Smithas our continuing Secretary, andChuck Stennus as our continuingTreasurer. and anybody that shows upat the monthly meetings, is consideredon the board. We also have a potentialdirector who has been directing us inour last couple of practices, and wehope he continues to do so; his nameis Alex Heetland. Everyone seems toenjoy his directing, so we hope we canafford and keep him on.

We had the privilege to sing at thenew Potentate’s church service at theMasonic Home on January 13th.Therewere ten singers along with our faith-ful accompanist, Sue Opland, leadingand directing us.We would not knowwhat to do without our Sue.Then wewere served a very nice lunch. (Lookat the February Arabian for our pic-ture). Then on February 2nd at thePotentate’s Ball, we had ten nobles singalong with a guest.

Chris Jensen came with his parents,Thanks a lot, Chris, we enjoyed havingyou. Mary Ponthan decorated ourroom, and she did a super job, although she lost one of her pelicans. Iguess someone got itchy fingers. Themajority of our group took off and ateat TGIF, and we all enjoyed a nice mealalong with good company. StartingFebruary 11th, we will be meeting forpractice at 6.30 p.m. ast the ScottishRite. This is a change that the Chantersare trying and the purpose is toencourage more young nobles to joinus who have to work during the day.

That’s all for this time. If you haveany questions give our new President acall. Don’t ask me—I just write thearticle. See you all at practice.

MARCH 2013 ZUHRAH ARABIAN 5

ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

Another Midwest Pipe BandAssociation Fargo Training Session is inthe books, and the many members ofthe Midwest pipe bands who participat-ed came away with some new insightsand skills about piping & drumming. It iscertainly something that a full day ofintense instruction from highly qualifiedinstructors will provide. And it will go along way to make the Zuhrah Pipes &Drums a better band.Adding to the funwas a grand banquet at the El ZagelShrine Center, followed by a perform-ance tour of the local establishments.Allof which allowed for some brilliantcamaraderie with the other members ofour Shrine piping & drumming commu-nity. It was truly another great adventurefor the Pipes & Drums.

As we move into the month of March, practice becomes the priority for ournew students,as well as for our seasonedveterans, as we try to put to good use toour new skills from the Fargo trip. It ishard to believe, but it is only a scant fewweeks before the lads have to shake therust off for our first parade of the yearon St. Patrick’s Day, in New Richmond,Wisconsin.Without a doubt, the lads willonce again perform admirably in our spe-cial shortened parade route. The mostappealing part of the day, however, is theever exhilarating performances at thevarious local establishments that sponsorthe band that day. There is also that tra-ditional moment when our Drum Majoruses his mace as a ceiling divining rod, much to the applause of the vast crowds. It will once again prove to be anothergreat adventure for the Pipes & Drums.

With the approaching start to theparade and performance season, it alsobecomes a very good time to look overthe various parts of your uniforms, toassure that everything is up to bandstandards, and to replace any worn outparts & supplies. Contact our quarter-master, Jeff Ansell, if you need somethingto bring your uniforms back intorespectable order. Don’t forget to clean, iron and polish all that can be, so that wemay take pride in the Zuhrah Pipes &Drums as we hit the street.

Monday night band practice also pro-vides an opportunity for new Nobles ofZuhrah who may be interested in

becoming a part of the grand traditionsof the Zuhrah Pipes & Drums to comedown and meet the members and learna bit more about the band. It is anopportune time to join the Pipes &Drums, as it allows you to join the manyother students who are starting to learnto play.We practice on Monday nights atthe Minneapolis Scottish Rite, with thestudents working with their instructorsprior to full band practice at 7 p.m.

Contact one of the members of thePipes & Drums, or contact our DrumMajor Jerry Oliver, whose numberappears in the Pipes & Drums advertise-ment somewhere in this issue of theArabian for additional information. Wecan only promise you an opportunity forfun, great camaraderie, and the ability tolearn one of the world’s most misunder-stood instruments, or one of the manytypes of drums that we play.

It truly is a great time to be a memberof the Zuhrah Pipes & Drums.

Until next month… Cluich Le CeolBinn (Play the sweet music)

This year’s Potentate’s Ball was ahuge success for the Rod & Gun. OurGrumpy Old Men theme was a classicand the minnow race was the mostpopular game in the place. Fishing for acold one went over big too. The icefishing set-up looked very real, and the“Green Hornet” fishing poles usedwere authentic replicas of the oneused by Walter Matthau in the movie.By popular demand we were forced toreopen the minnow races after thedance—so many wanted to do theraces again. Thanks to the artistic abil-ities of Mark (Spanky) Coleman, whodesigned and painted the walls of ourfish house, we had a good replica ofthe real thing. With Spanky’s tutoring,Ole turned out to be a pretty goodknot painter. Tim Lind did a great jobof running the minnow races, whichgot very hectic several times with thewaiting lines getting pretty long. DickCronstrom did the honors at thecatch a cold one ice fishing station.Cold Front Cronstrom didn’t catchany, but helped some of the ladies landa cold one. President Bill’s Lady, Barb, worked as hard as anyone to make ourroom a success. She made several wildgame dishes for all our visitors to par-take in. Plus some great fudge andbrownies that we all enjoyed. Thankyou, Barb, for all you did. Tim Lindtreated us to an excellent PheasantCasserole. Jerry Horn did a great jobwith his new smoker on some deli-cious Trout. P.P. Darryl Metzgersmoked several goose breasts whichwas one of the more popular wildgame treats to be had.

Thanks to all who helped in makingthis event a profitable endeavor for us aswe gained eleven new Rod & Gunnersover the weekend.Jim Wedell, Jim Holzer,Russ Hammond, Bruce Nelson, DarrylMetzger,Mark Coleman, and last, but notleast, our President Bill Vice who waspart of all the activities that took place toput this on. He came up with the ideas, helped build it all,and was instrumental inmost of the signed petitions.

The highlight of the festivities forthe Rod & Gun was the presentationof the Cully Lagerquist award for theunit that has done the most for theShrine and the Hospital in the pastyear. Our growing club is looking for-ward to another busy year of promot-ing the Shrine and supporting the hos-pital.With the help of our new mem-bers, we are going to shoot for thetrophy next year too.

Those who have signed up for theLake of the Woods Trip, please getyour deposit in. Make your check outto Zuhrah Rod & Gun and send it toBob Hagen 8944 Vincent CircleBloomington, MN 55431. That willconfirm your reservation. We havefour full boats now so don’t wait toolong and get bumped as we have morerequests than room. Also rememberdues are due too.

A sporting clays shoot is on at theHorse & Hunt Club for Saturday,April27th. It will start at 10 a.m.This will bea Rush Party so bring anyone whomight be interested in the Shrine orour club, or family members andfriends. All are welcome. It will be $40for 50 targets and the Burger Bar forlunch. Additional rounds of 50 will be$20 if you want to shoot after lunch.Steel shot is not required; shells areavailable at Horse and Hunt. ZUHRAH SHRINE UNITS

The Horsemen get together at leastevery Wednesday afternoon-evening atour ranch at 4505 County Road 92,just south of Rockford. We start gath-ering around 1500 and always have ameal about 1900. If you are readingthis, you are welcome to visit us!

February got off to a bang. The Potentate’sball held at the DoubleTree on the 2nd and3rd of the month was in this noble’s opinionthe best affair in the four years I’ve been withZuhrah. Friday started off with decoratingour room under the direction of Bro. PaulBantle. The theme was Hollywood Classicsand Paul found just enough decorations togive one the impression of a Hollywoodaffair but didn't go overboard like someother units did. Our focus was going to beon the people dressed in their favorite char-acters costume and having fun socializing. This year the Horsemen who came onFriday did not disappoint this observer.Unfortunately we are limited as to howmany photos we can print in the newspaper, because there were so many great cos-tumes (if you want see more photos, go toour Facebook page, whatever that means).Inthe meantime I will try to describe who

came disguised as whom: Wild Bill Hickok –Brad Roberts, Annie Oakley – ClaireRoberts, Roman Centurion – Larry

Messerli, Lucy Ricardo– Colleen Lavine,General GeorgePatton – Art Hart, Dr.Evil – Chuck Stefanoc,Dance Hall girl – JennyStewart,Tin Horn gam-bler – Rob Stewart,Marylyn Monroe –Heather Bantle, thecast from the movieGREASE – Andrewand Betsy Arashiba

with Donal and Tiffany McErlean,Dance Hallgirl – Kelly Gretton, Riverboat Gambler –Bob Gretton, and the movieextra cowboysplayed by PaulBantle, MikeLavine, LowellCampbell, andSam Schwartz. If I missed anyone I am trulysorry, because everyone put so much effortgetting into the spirit of the evening.

But it wasn't just our unit, every unitwas into it. Some units had a group themesuch as the room where everyone wasdressed as members of the 4077th Mash,or the one where everyone was dressedas pirates. This all added to the enjoymentof the evening and made wanderingaround the hall, visiting the different roomsso enjoyable.I don't doubt that there werePotentate’s Balls in the past that wereequal to this one,but this was truly a mem-orable one! The Horsemen room seemedto attract a lot of visitors throughout theevening. I don't know if people walking bysaw that we were having so much fun,

laughing or maybe they saw MarylynMonroe was in our room and wanted totake her picture (she has never had somany strangers want to take her picture asshe did that night). As usual, the older folksdeparted at a reasonably late time, leavingthe dance floor to the younger members.

Saturday's events started off with thevarious bands entertaining the crowdwhile we waited to file into the ballroomfor dinner and the evening program. I, forone, have never been impressed withbanquet food, but the DoubleTree did anexcellent job this time, the beef tipswere tender enough to be cut by a fork, and the side dishes and dessert weredelicious. Thankfully the speeches wereshort. Then came time for the entertain-ment, and we were not disappointed. The Minnesota Marching Band camehigh stepping into the room and wereloudly cheered by those in attendance, and when the band launched into theMinnesota Rouser everyone got up,cheered and sang along. For someonewho graduated so long ago, it was likebeing back on campus at a pep rally.

After dinner, back at the cabana, the funjust kept on.The dance band started play-ing and everyone joined in.There a fewpeople who maybe had a little too muchto drink (we won't mention names), andthey were having a great time especiallyout on the dance floor. But as things mustcome to an end, the later it got the old-sters started to go home, leaving thedance floor to the younger members. Ihave been told there was a lot that hap-pened in the wee hours of the morning, but unfortunately I wasn’t around toreport to you on the events. In conclu-sion, if you passed up the ball this year, maybe you might think twice next year, and join your brothers in what hopefullywill be an equally great event.

We are starting to get more ridersout on Wednesdays, to ride the trails andto practice our drills. We are still prettyrusty in the maneuvers, but it seems likethe routines are getting a little morefamiliar to the riders and the horses, sothere are fewer foul ups.The good thingabout the situation is that some of ourmore experienced riders have yet toparticipate on a regular basis, so we canonly get better and once we get out intothe out door arena we will look somuch better. The trails in Lake RebeccaCounty Park are in pretty good condi-tion, so if the weather is decent, comeon out and join me and Side Meat.

In April, there will be a “KICK UP"party for Bro Mike Lavine. Not being amember of the Divan, I will rely onSide Meat to tell you about the party.

In last month’s issue we told youabout two events that were to be host-ed at the ranch. The first was the WECAN RIDE organization were going tohold a series of meeting to look forhorses and volunteers to assist in a newprogram to help veterans with physicaland or mental handicaps. To date theyhave identified six horses that will be thecore of the program.Volunteers are stillbeing assessed,so if you are interested atall, please contact Bro Dal Holmbergthrough the ranch.

The second event hosted at theranch was the annual meeting of the502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment re-

The Potentate’s Ball is now history, and I have a lot of people to thank! OurAntique Car room had fantastic decora-tions we can all be very proud of. I wantto give special thanks to Steve and JannaLaumann for making the great juke box.The detail was fantastic, and I saw peo-ple coming to the room just to see whatpeople had been talking about. Thankyou to Dick and Ginger Russell for thecars we had sitting out in the patio areaunder the canopy out in front of ourdiner. The ’57 chev was so realistic, a ladytried to sit on the trunk lid Friday nightfor a picture. Hello – it’s Styrofoam.Andthank you to Karl and Sharon Flick forbeing in charge of the ’32 Ford marqueethat all of the visitors to the ball had towalk under as they went room to room.I know that was a collaborative effortwith a lot of help from Gary Reynolds,

enactment Society group. Twenty-ninemembers showed up from around thecountry. Bro Art Hart reports that all inattendance had a great time, and theywere impressed by our ranch, so muchso that a number of them stayedovernight in the clubroom.

Bro Bill Leadens is a long-time horse-man and has had many horses. His cur-rent horse “Cash” has been a project forBill. He has been working to get Cash tostand with all four feet on a drum.As youcan see from the photo, Bill finally suc-ceeded. It wasn’t all Bill's doing, he hadhelp from a young girl, but we will givehim the credit for accomplishing a verydifficult task. Cash did it once; can he doit again in front of an audience?

Our next brunch will be held SUN-DAY, March 10th, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.It will feature the usual items such asscrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and any other dishthat may be “wrangled” up.Plus the usualhorse rides for the children, and, if thereis a demand for it, hay rides where thewagon can access. As usual, all membersof the Horsemen will be in attendanceto help out.

A belated get well wish for recoveryfrom surgery to Bro. Bob Bender andrecovery from influenza to Bro. ArniePalmer; best wishes for good results onhis new hip to Bro. John Tackaberry, andmost recently, our prayers go out forBro. Max Downs who suffered a CVA(stroke) in the first half of February.

At the MidwestWinter Session inDuluth, the Horsemenwere awarded aplaque for being thebest parade unit at the2012 MSA parade inGrand Forks, NorthDakota.

Cowboy Wisdom from Will Rogers:There are two theories about arguingwith a woman. Neither works.

As noted before, we have new rid-ers who require parade uniforms, so ifyou have these items or know some-one who has but are not using them, please contact Bro Messerli.

If you would like to see for yourselfwhat a dynamic group the Horsemenare, please call Provost Sam Schwartz@ 612-418-5379 and arrange a timeto come to the ranch.

Till next month,

The inside of the room looked just likethe diner in the movie with the check-ered table cloths and the posters on thewall. The food was fantastic and oncepeople heard there were “sliders,” thesuitcase emptied very quickly.Thank youto all the members who helped makeour room one of the best at the ball.

For the members who didn’t go tothe banquet, you missed the Universityof Minnesota marching band. The ener-gy in the room was so much fun to wit-ness, I wanted to go get football tickets. It was great to see Pote Al’s and Deb’sdaughter playing in the band. Veryimpressive! The committee did a greatjob keeping that a secret.

Our March hamburger run will be toMad Jacks in Brooklyn Park on March27th.We meet between 5:30 and 6:00p.m. No reservations are required, justcome and join in the fellowship. We geta pretty good turn out and you don’thave to be a member to join us.

Our Stated meeting is always the2nd Wednesday of the month at ParkTavern in St. Louis Park. We meet at6:00 p.m. if you want to eat dinner andthe meetings start at 7:00 p.m.

The Chairmen: We celebrate themusic, the style, and the generosity ofthe Rat Pack era.

Good tidings once again to one andall. Once we were past the seasonal lulldue to holiday well-wishing and new yearrecuperations, The Chairmen venturedinto high gear. First of all, it was ‘all handson deck’ for the decoration and adorn-ment of The Chairmen’s Pote’s Ball hos-pitality room (although if truth beknown, most of the ‘hands’ belonged toAmy Jackson). Then, at the Ball itself, theroom saw Noble Aikens with Fay Wray(aka Susan) in tow, Noble Simpsonshilling at the front, a myriad of compe-tent bartenders, and Noble Fiskum at thepiano tickling the ivories in his bestlounge lizard persona. Such efforts borefruit as once again, The Chairmen wonthe Zuhrah Best Hospitality Roomaward again this year. The competitionwas close with many great rooms butThe Chairmen were able to eke out a

Greetings, fellow Joeys and BrotherNobles all! I write to you waiting forwinter to break and spring to turn intosummer, so we may get out there anddo what we do best, parading. I hopeyou are all ready for this year. It shouldbe a lot of fun.

We are well on our way to the paradeseason. Already the requests are comingin, so please watch for the sign-up sheetscoming to our meetings. We will need atleast five clowns per parade, and I wouldlike to see us break records (figuratively, ofcourse, unless you have a neat skit involv-ing breaking something… then I’m in).

The 30th of March will be our annualEaster Egg Hunt at the Masonic HomeNorth Ridge. Please see the ad in theArabian for details and spread theword. We will be setting up basketsand such the Friday before, and wouldlike some help. Details will be comingat the meeting as to what time we willmeet to get set up.

Pote’s Ball this year was a lot of fun. Iwould like to thank Buttons for comingup with the awesome facade for ourroom. It looked great. While there, Ispoke with no less than three potentiallyinterested Nobles about joining our fun-loving group. I will follow up with themand, hopefully, we can expand our ranksthis year. If one of them is reading this, our meetings take place at the ShrineHospital at 7 p.m.on the second Mondayof the month.

At the Pote’s Ball, I had the pleasureof meeting Illustrious Sir, Bob Gorsuchfrom Zor Shrine in Madison,Wisconsin. He was kind enough to hand me a coinfor his year as Potentate that has thewords “But We’ve ALWAYS Done ItThat Way” in a red circle with the strike

through on it. I like this approach. Wedo things a lot because it’s how we’vealways done it. I think for us to grow asShriners and as Funsters, we will need alittle out-of-the-box thinking. This lastyear, the Shrine had new events inplace, or a new take on something old,and they were very successful. Thisyear’s Divan is going to be doing muchthe same, which I look forward to. Inow challenge you to think on eventsyou would like to see happen this year.Think on parade cities we are not atthat you might want to try. Let meknow if you have any ideas for this yearso we can discuss them and see whatwe can make happen.

We’ll see you at our meetings andout on the parade routes.

Good night and joy be to you all.

win against this worthy competition. In addition, The Chairmen enjoyed

the Potentate’s banquet this year withthree tables for their members. Thiswas the largest representation of anyof Zuhrah’s Units and Clubs.A sincerenote of appreciation goes to all thoseChairmen members and guests whosupported both The Chairmen andZuhrah at this event.

Last month, the group met at theGolden Leaf ’s new abode in theMinneapolis Uptown area to check outthe place and conduct business. Threenew petitioners were on hand and wel-comed into the group. The IllustriousPotentate, Al Niederhaus, was on handto guide the neophytes in the properway of lighting cigars without seriousdamage to the individual (“don’t bendover the flame…”) or to your clothing(“replace the cap on the lighter beforereturning it to your pocket….”). It wasthis kind of keen insight that gotIllustrious Sir to the position he holdstoday. The March meeting location, date, and time will be distributed later to ourmembers. If any non-Chairman is inter-ested in attending, please contact oursecretary at [email protected].

The Chairmen will be assistingIllustrious Sir Al this April at the ZuhrahScotch Tasting (scheduled for Saturday,April 20th). More about this will beforthcoming in The Arabian. Finally, if

Much has happened since I last wrotein the Arabian: Thanksgiving, a circus,Christmas, a New Year, a new Potentate,a Potentate's Ball and a Super Bowl. How about them Bears? The 101 didnot work the circus or Breakfast withSanta this time around. We did, however, help out at the New Year's Brunch andat the Ball. Dick, Fred, President Milt andI tiled the doors at the Banquet and Billand Milt “worked” the Runway at theGrand March. This was a fun event witha Hollywood Classics theme, but Janiceand I turned into Pumpkins around10:00 p.m.and headed back to the patch.

These magical events all came andwent pretty quickly for me. My mind isnot programmed for multiple tasks or,for that matter, multiple thoughts. With the endless drama of my job, myfamily, my leisure time and Zuhrah, lifeis a bit of a blur for me.

The 101 will be fairly quiet in thecoming months as winter morphs intospring and our snow birds return tothe roost. Please dine and revel withyour fellow nobles at the 101 statedmeeting on March 6.

The Willmar Area Shrine Club is wakingup from our long winter’s nap...well,maybenot quite yet, but a few of us are shiftingand dreaming of a spring thaw. While we’restill a little groggy, we did manage to do afew things this year already, despite thestrong tendency to hibernate.

In January,we had a fun trip to the OldLog Theater. Twenty Nobles and Ladiesattended a dinner and matinee presenta-tion of A Perfect Wedding with our specialguest, Nola Wagner. Thanks, Nola, formany years of beautiful Pointsettias! Alsoa big thanks goes out to Noble Walt andLady Raeanna for the “Perfect Time.”

Then the usual suspects showed up

L.A.S.C Pres Brad Winings offers hissincere thanks to Zuhrah Potentate AlNiederhaus, Assistant Rabban RossHjermstad, and Outer Guard JonPavola who installed our 2013 L.A.S.C.Officers on January 25th. Our installa-tion followed a great meal at Peter’son Lake Ripley. Needless to say, we allenjoyed the evening.

President Brad Winings, his Lady Kayla, along with Noble Ron Winings and hisLady Jannel, thoroughly enjoyed thePotentate’s Ball. They occupied their timeFriday evening visiting the hospitalityrooms of the various units and clubs.According to Pres. Brad, Saturday night’sbanquet was a blast! Following dinner anddessert, Potentate Al treated everyonewith a performance of the U of MGopher Pep Band. Rumor has it, that hisdaughter Jackie is a member of the PepBand. He probably had a little inside pull, booking this group. Following the PepBand performance, the Ball held theirGrand March, and then an evening ofgreat dancing. Pres. Brad felt fortunate torepresent the Litchfield Area Shrine Club.

On February 20th, L.A.S.C. held ameeting at the VFW to discuss ourupcoming membership promotionevent, and to address the future direc-tion of our French Toast Breakfast.W.M.Terry Miller represented GoldenFleece Lodge’s involvement / participa-tion in future French Toast Breakfasts.

At our next meeting, Wednesday,March 20th, to be held at the VFW,we’ll pursue further discussion onthese issues. Both Nobles and theirLadies are invited to the March meet-ing. The 7:00 p.m. meeting will followthe 6:00 dinner and social.

for the Hollywood Classics night and thePotentate’s Ball. While this is always agood time, we found the Super Bowl onSunday a bit subdued... maybe it was justme, but I think the two nights at theDoubleTree had something to do with it.

So here we are in mid-February,thinking , dreaming of (and some prayingfor) warmer weather and a little bit ofgreen. We have another big year aheadso now is the time to list our majorevents. We will kick off the summer withour annual picnic and toy run on June 9.Bring your bike, bring a toy, and be pre-pared for a good ride! All toys collectedare donated to the Shriner’s Hospitalfor Children – Twin Cities... a noblecause for our Nobles and Ladies.

On June 23rd,we have our President’sbrunch at a location very close to whereI am sitting right now. More details tocome once I see green grass.

July 21st is our third annual Shriner’snight at the ballpark. This still qualifies asa new tradition for our club, which alsomakes it an exciting opportunity todevelop new and fun ways to promoteMasonry, the Shrine, and the Shriner’sHospitals. This year our own WillmarStingers will host the MankatoMoondogs... this is sure to be aNorthwoods League classic matchupnot to be missed.Again, watch for moredetails later this spring.

August 10 marks our steak fry, alsoa long-standing tradition. Finally, I amtold another Shrine Circus is in storefor Willmar on September 13 and 14.Wow, we have an ambitious bunch!

Nanc, we miss you and hope to seeyou soon. Godspeed!
