African Rainbow Minerals (ARM)and Anglo American PlatinumLimited, (Joint Venture Partners inthe Modikwa Platinum Mine), inpartnership with Greater TubatseLocal Municipality hosted theopening of the new Maandagshoekcommunity road last Sunday. Theroad was was funded by AfricanRainbow Minerals (ARM) throughits subsidiary, ARM MiningConsortium, and Anglo AmericanPlatinum. The ceremony wasattended by dignitaries includingbusiness, religious, traditional,national and local leaders.The roadlinks up some of the villages in thearea to the main provincial road.Construction of the road took 14months and approximately 400construction jobs were created.Patrice Motsepe, the ExecutiveChairman of African RainbowMinerals (ARM) said, “The sevenlocal communities in the areaneighbouring Modikwa PlatinumMine own 17% of ARM MiningConsortium which translates to8.5% of Modikwa Platinum Mine.The local communities identified thebuilding of the road as an importantinitiative to improve the livingconditions and mobility of thepeople in the area.Vishnu Pillay, Executive Head: JointVentures of Anglo AmericanPlatinum Limited said, “AngloAmerican Platinum and ARM is astory of a mining partnershipworking together for the success ofthe community and country. Theconstruction of the road is awonderful example of creatingshared value between the mine andcommunity where both can use theinfrastructure for mutual benefit.”

R40 million for skills

Anglo American Platinum has committed itself towardsskills development in the immediate vicinity ofTwickenham Platinum Mine by making available R40million per year for a bursary scheme. The TwickenhamProgramme manager, Mr Masala Mutangwa (top left),told senior learners and their teachers in the area thatthe mine, which will only come into production in a fewyears time, will need lots of skills and that learnersshould work hard to qualify for bursaries that areavailable through the scheme. Mr Mutangwa said all thespecialised skills can come from the area an need notbe procured from outside if learners apply their minds totheir studies.The scheme was welcomed by the Executive Mayor ofSekhukhune Distrtrict Municipality, Cllr Mogobo DavidMagabe (upper left) and Greater Tubatse Mayor, CllrNkosi Josias Mahlake (left).Cllr Magabe reiterated his long-held view ofpartnerships between business and government toalleviate poverty by equipping people with skills toobtain jobs. Education and traditional leaders at theevent focused on the responsibility of learners whoshould apply them to their studies and work hard,thereby not wasting the opportunities that are createdfor them. At the event, which was held at the mine’sTwickenham Shaft, students that successfullycompleted a Basic Home Maintenance Programme,also received their certificates. After all the formalspeeches all the neccessary information, appplicationforms and requirements were given to learners andexplained before lunch was served.

Christians come togetherOn Sunday 14 August 2011 various churches cametogether for a Jesus March. They walked from the threeentrances of Burgersfort to the hill where the DutchReformed Church planted a cross in April this year.On the hill the group of approximately 150 peoplejoined hands in prayer and worship. They specificallyprayed for strength in carrying out the message ofJesus’ love and how he died on the cross for our sinsas well as the eradication of racism in the Burgersfortcommunity. Gatherings such as this will now take placemore often.Churches who participated included the DutchReformed Church, Abundant Life Gospel Church, Godin Action Baptist Church, Elshadai Lydenburg,Lewende Woord Lydenburg, Shakainah WorshipCentre Praktiseer, Full Gospel Church, AFM Church,Harvest Ministries Pretoria, Church of the Children ofGod Penge.A visitor to the area, André Mundel has been crossing

the country with a cross on his shoulder. He testified atchurch events over the weekend and on the way back downthe hill gave residents the opportunity to also take up thecross and be reminded of what Jesus did for the world.

Legal Aid South Africa hosted an outreachon Saturday last week.This was in line with its core mandate ofdelivering quality legal aid services to theindigent. Legal Aid South Africa hosted thepublic education outreach project with othergovernment stakeholders such asDepartment of Justice, South African SocialSecurity Agency (SASSA), Department ofSafety, Security and Liaison –Limpopo,South African Police Service (SAPS),Department of Home Affairs and Eskom toeducate the people of Dresden about theirrights and responsibilities as citizens of thiscountry. The South African constitutionguarantees everyone a right to have a legalrepresentation at state expense.The day began with presentations bystakeholders educating the communityabout various services that are rendered bytheir department’s as a capacity crowd ofclose to three hundred people heeded thecall and attended in large numbers, servicessuch as identity application, social grantsand legal advice were rendered to thevillagers. “Legal Aid Advice Line aims to assist poorSouth Africans with immediate legal advice.People earning less that R5000 per monthwould qualify for assistance. Fromexperience, approximately 80% of peopleonly require some legal advice in order toresolve/clarify their issues/problems. Whereit is found that they would require a lawyer totake their matter forward, we will then linkthem to one of our experienced civil lawyers

at a centre closest to them” says ModimolleJustice Centre Executive Ms JET Maimela.“We say Thetha Nathi and everyone cannow access legal advice at their fingertips,by simply dialling our toll free number 0800110 110.The call centre operating hours arefrom 07:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, excludingpublic holidays.Women and children areusually the most affected groups in civilconflicts such as divorce and land disputes -hence civil legal matters have become ahuge priority for Legal Aid SA due to ourhuman rights focus. For many years Women’s Day Celebrationsat Modikwa Platinum Mine was the highlightfor the women in Thorburn in MpumalangaProvince. This year it was no different withThorburn women attending the ModikwaPlatinum Mine Women’s Day celebrationson 5 August 2011.The previous annual festivities at ModikwaPlatinum Mine inspired the Pretoria basedwomen to also share in Women’s Dayfestivities in 2011 and on 5 August 2011,under the guidance of Keitumetse Campbell(Human Resources Manager) women fromGauteng held a “festivity” at the Pretoriaoffice.Thorburn Security Solutions Chairperson,Leba Mashao, was the guest speaker. Herstraight forward approach had the women in laughter time andagain.Pastor P Marobane touched on the spiritual side of being awomen in the hour she spend with the ladies.They were also treated to financial advice from representativeof First National Bank and ABSA.Ms Juanita Erasmus of Tubatse told the women that they mustappreciate the long way they’ve come into filling positions thatwere previously reserved for men. August 6 was yet another fabulous day for Womenworking at Modikwa Platinum Mine as they took partin commemorating women’s day.Though celebrated earlier, the spirit of this specialday was seen in the beautiful traditional garmentswhich was the theme for this year’s dress code.Women showed up absolutely beautiful as theyrecognized the heroism of the Women who cametogether in 1956 to protest against the then Pass Lawthat prohibited freedom of movement.It is in honor of the accomplishment that resulted fromthat day (August the 9th 1956) , that ModikwaPlatinum Mine Management supported the womenfrom all business units including contractors on sitein celebration and commemorate this special day.Modikwa Business Leader, Mr Mandla Nxumalo onaddress encouraged women to take up the challengeof filling technical positions, which werepreviously dominated by men. He added thatthese positions have now been madeavailable and reserved for women althoughthe response from women has been verylow and disappointing. Mining. ECM currently employ 280 women inpositions right across the value chain of the

business. Womenaccounts for 15% ofthe total workforce(which is much higherthan the requiredtarget set in the MiningCharter of 10%).Women’s Day is aspecial occasionwhereby the ladies ofECM are recognizedfor their contribution tothe business, and hadthe opportunity tocelebrate their gender.A very special day forthe ladies was hostedby ECM and theWinterveld Re-creational Club hallwas turned into aspectacular sight. Atfirst the ladies weremotivated by LoraineMphahlele, who is aprofessional entre-preneur and the

founder and Executive Director of Investmentsfor African Women Holdings, to inspire andachieve their full potential. She highlighted to the ladies that they have aspecial gift of nurturing which forms part of awomen’s make up, and that ladies should bringthat special gift to the workplace to developideas, give life to new things, and to incubateideas and implement them. She used anexample of a lady who put five children throughUniversity by selling tomatoes. After her

inspiring talk, the ladies were entertained bythe handsome Riba Cross Timers. The ladiesthoroughly enjoyed the choir’s charm. Thenthe Riba Cross Civil Society Youth Choirenergised the audience with their vibrantsinging. Last but not least the ladies enjoyeda special lunch. As the ladies left thecelebration, the words of Loraine Mphahahlelestayed with them when they remembered hersaying: “Give a woman a house, and shemakes it a home”.

Shout-it-now atCalvin College

Calvin College students this weekparticipated in the Shout-it-now campaign.The campaign runs under the Aurum Instituteand is currently visiting schools in the area.The students then watch a video andcomplete an interactive questionaire.Anonimity is key and fingerprints are used foridentification purposes. The questionairehelps to create a profile for each participatingindividual. This is based on questionsregarding sexual behaviour andcircumstances which can elevate the risk ofHIV infection.Each student then sees a counsellor whodiscuss the profile with them. Especiallythose with a high risk profile are encouragedto get tested and know their HIV status.Testing is voluntary and the results are kept

confidential.Should a student test positive they will begiven support and guidance. Follow-up visitsare also done, although this is done outsidethe school.The school also receives feedback, but nonames are ever disclosed to the teachers orgoverning body.On Monday when Platinum Gazette visitedthe school, the students were very positiveand almost everyone happy to get tested andknow their status.After completing the session with thecounsellors they also received a R10Shoprite shopping voucher an armband witha slogan to remind them aboutkeeping themselves safe. Thewhole high school participated.

Calvin College studentsreceived training in first aid.The course took place inMay and grade 11 and 12learners attended theprogramme.This covered a variety oftopics such as CPR(Cardio-pulmonaryresuscitation), chocking,primary and secondarysurveying, woundsbleeding, shock,unconsciousness, fainting,fractures, burns as well ashead and spinal injuries.The learners were giventhe opportunity to performCPR on a simulation doll,named Peter. They alsopractised dressing differenttypes of fracture wounds bypretending to be patients aswell as using equipmentsuch as a spider harnessby strapping peers down.The learners and staff whoattended had to pass atheory test as well as apractical demonstration.Their certification is validfor three years.

Die Winterveld Fees vind op 2 en 3 September by Winterveld Klub plaas. Hierdiejaar behoort dit weer ‘n groot geleentheid op die sosiale kalender te wees. On the 6th of August 2011 the ModikwaFishing Team went on another fishing tripat Doorndraai Dam.The following team members took part: JJSmit, Leon Bona, Henry Coetzer, BernieGates, Mike Liebenberg, Jakkals Botha,Glen Abbot, Gideon Brown and BeyersNaude. This trip was more successful thanlast and the team used more advancedequipment supplied by Mike Liebenberg,JJ Smit (Skipper), Bernie Gates (Assistant)and Leon Bona for landing the fish. Theycaught a 14.1kg Carp, some Bass were

also caught by JJ Smit and some Kurperscaught by Gideon Brown and Jakkals Botha.It took an hour to land the big one.The team would like to thank Mr. MandlaNxumalo (Business Leader) and Mr. KobusVermaak (Business Area Leader - NorthShaft) for allowing the team to go on thistrip.
