Greater Tubatse Municipality, The Police,NGOs, mines and various other roleplayersteamed-up against HIV/Aids and domesticgender-based violence this week when aPartnership in Sports day was held atShopiane Sports Groud at Longtill(Eerstegeluk).

During the proceedings the LimpopoPolice Jazz Band entertained the crowd andpoets, comedians and, child care workers, brought the message accros that HIV/AIDSas a killer disease should be fought toothand nail, while gender based violence alsohave no blace in communities as it breaksdown families and society as a whole.

Politicians also got their turn and tospeak. Greter Tubatse Municipality Mayor,Nkosi Josias Mahlake, could not attend buthis message was delivered by Cllr RinkieKhoza on his behalf.

Cllr Mahlake said we are all aware of theimpact of HIV/AIDS in our communities andwe need collective effort to put the messageacross. He said our area is experiencing thefastest growing economy in the country thatbrings a lot of socio-economic challenges toour communities. The area of Steelpoort isknown for its mining activities and a passagethat connects Limpopo with Mpumalangaand Gauteng. Acording to the mayor theincrease of goods transport passing throughSteelpoort and the town is also used as aconvenient stop-over by transport drivers. This has prompted the emergence of illicitand immoral activities like prostitution. “Thispractise is causing our young girls to leaveschool and their homes in search of quickmoney. Some went up to the extent ofengaging in sexual activities without usingprotection. We are excited for this initiativebecause through sports we can raise

awareness for children to abstain fromsexual activities until they are old enough todo so” the mayor said, adding that “Theprevalence of HIV/AIDS in our society is ofgreat concern and it needs our collectiveeffort put message across. Government andorgans of civil society have come up withprograms to learn about the disease andalso how to prevent infections. We areaffected because those infected are livingwithin us and we must not stigmatise them.We must create an HIV free society and thatcampaign should start with everyone”.

Talking about gender-based violence hesatated “in few days’ time we will belaunching 16 days of Activism againstWomen and Children Abuse. We come froma background where gender based violencewas not reported because women felt thatmen were correct in applying violence tosolve family problems. This has gone farwhere men are killing their spouses in thename of bringing discipline in their homes. We must stand up as society to condemnthose who are promoting these barbaricacts.

You cannot hurt someone you love butas men we should make sure that weprotect those we love. The effects of gender-based violence bring irreparable damage toour children because they constantlywitness the events. Our role as men is toteach boys that to solve problems throughviolence is not okay but must use theirminds to confront any challenge they arefacing. Our presence today here is thecommitment that we are serious about thefight against HIV/AIDS and violence towardswomen and children. We must use anyactivity especially sports to put the messageacross”.

After all the formal procedures the crowdenjoyed e hearty meal whereafter soccerand netball between several teams wereplayed.

Advertorial

What is irritable bowel syndrome? What is Irritable Bowel Sydrome (IBS)?It is a disorder that leads to abdominal pain, changes in bowel movements, cramping and other symptoms. Itmust be noted that it is not the same as inflammatory bowel disease. IBS often develops during the teenageor early adulthood years. It is also more common in women than in men.

IBS does not cause permanent harm to the intestines and is not the forerunner of diseases such as cancer. Itcan be treated and symptoms relieved. It can however be a lifelong condition.

Causes:It is not clear why patients develop the syndrome, but one of the causes can be after an infection of theintestines. Stess could be another cause. Because the brain and the nerves constantly connect to passmessages for survival along, they may become more active during stressful periods. The intestines couldbecome more sensitive and contract more.

Symtoms: The symptoms could differ from person to person, but the main symptoms include abdominalpain, a sensation of being very full, gassy or bloated. A person is often diagnosed with IBS if they’ve had thesymptoms for at least 3 days for a period of three consecutive months.

People suffering from IBS could switch between constipation and diarrhea. Symptoms could lean to the oneside or the other in different degrees. Many people with IBS lose their appetite.

Signs and tests: A doctor usually diagnose IBS based on the symptoms without running many tests. It isoften recommended that patients who suspect that they may suffer from IBS follow a 2 week lactose-free(milk free) diet to check for a possible lactase deficiency.

Blood tests my be run to determine if a patient suffers from a low blood count (anemia). Stools my also bechecked for signs of infection.

A colonoscopy test may also be done. This test examines the colon. If the symptoms began after the age of50 and they include weight loss or bloody stools or abnormal blood tests they could also indicate one of thefollowing diseases: Celiac disease, Colon cancer or Chrohn’s disease.

If anxiety causes the symptoms, it can be treated through therapy.

Treatment:Treatment will relieve the symptoms of IBS. Lifestyle changes are often recommended. Regular exercise andbetter sleeping habits may help reduce the symptoms. Dietry changes could also be prescribed. It could help if a patient increases the fibre in their diet (although it could increase the bloated feeling).Avoid large meals. Avoid drinks that stimulate the intestines. They may include drinks with caffeine like teaor colas.

Over the counter medicines for treatment are available, but patients are oftenadvised to first visit their docter to make sure that the best solution is found andthat nothing else is wrong.

Tar for Maseven road

The road between Ngwaabe and Maseven received its tarred surface recently. Maseven isthe villiage that is on the left hand side when travelling past the De Hoop Dam’s gate on theR555 when coming from Roossenekal’s side. Ngwaabe is next to the road to the Jane Furseroad on the left hand side a few kilometers after travelling from the steel bridge over theSteelpoort / Tubatse river. There is no road marks or traffic signs on this road and whentravelling from Ngwaabe, it stops abruptly just before you reach Maseven when you reach isdry river. Obviously some sort of a bridge will me needed here. The black top continues onthe other side of the river bank goes virtually through the village and then stops again. Youhave guessed it, dry river with steep banks (bridge also needed for this one. On the otherside, it is gravel all the way to the R555. Eventually, this route, when upgraded 100 percent, will make it easier to go to Jane Furse from the R555 (no steel bridge).

Ms Lebogang Koboyankwe said: “I’vebeen a victim of that. They obstructed metwo days ago at the Steelpoort robot. They just went in on the yellow line anddrove right in front of me as I waited forthe other cars to pass at the stop. Therobots are not working now. They abusetheir lights. We should all stop and soshould they. If they use the lights theymust be patient enough to let you get asuitable place where you can move awayand let them pass, they should not justcome and pressure you”.

Ms Faith Mugivhi said: “They must obey the rules like all of us. Politicians should notget preference because of their status. They don’t need lights on their vehicles.Emergency vehicles should use it only in an emergency”. With her are Mulanga andPunchu.

Mr Washington Mateyo, Mr Anthony Minjale and Mr M. Ngoma said: “Whether theymust have lights on their vehicles and be treated the same as emergency vehiclesdepends on who they are. That should be reserved only for the president, deputypresident and ministers. Those top positions can be driven with cars carrying lights, but they should not endanger other people. The rest, mayors and MEC etc. must belike all other road users. Planning is important. They must leave early for theirappointments. Being a minister or politician is not a passport for speeding. You shouldbe an example”.

Ms Cindy Topham and Ms Nikki Topham said: “Politicians should learn. If you don’twant to be late, leave on time. The police and emergency services only have differentrules in case of an emergency, but in Burgersfort I’ve seen the SAPS driving with theirlights on the whole time. We think they just want to get through the traffic. You don’tknow when it is an emergency or not”.

Me.

Mr Thibedi Mamabolo said: “Politiciansmay have cars with lights, but they arenot emergency vehicles. To drive straightover a red light is unacceptable. Theymust also obey the rules of the road. When you go to a meeting you must leaveearly. We as the public also haveappointments and emergencies, butcannot endanger others”. With him isMmakhudu Mamabolo.

By hom is Ethan.

Me. Sina Jacobs sê: “Die padreëls is daarvir almal. Nie net vir ons publiek nie. Houdie gebruik van ligte vir die nooddiensteoppad na ‘n noodgeval. Die ligte wordmisbruik”.

Ms Winnie Malatjie said: “Politiciansshould be treated like everyone else.Emergency vehicles may use their lightsonly in an emergency. It is unfair to uselights to drive a person to an appointmentfor which they are late. They must leaveon time”. With her is Tshepo Malatjie.

Mr Sekgwari Phasha said: “Let the use ofblue lights be for the police going to anemergency - not all the time. Maybeassign a different colour light to thepoliticians. Roads are for all citizens andeveryone must be respected”.

To use blue lights on not?The use of blue lights by vehicles carryingpoliticians came under the spotlight recentlyafter 18-year old Thomas Ferreira was hit bythe car of an MEC jumping over a red trafficlight in Gauteng.Emergency vehicles with lights such asambulances, the fire brigade and the SAPSare required to use both their lights andsirens to indicate that they are on their way to

an emergency. The law states that thesetools may only be used in a true emergencyand may not be abused. Drivers of thesevehicles are still obliged to observe the safetyof their fellow road users and may only cross ared robot if it is safe to do so. According to the

law, other vehicles should make way withoutendangering others, for the emergencyvehicle carrying all the appropriate lights andsirens. In the Western Cape no politician mayuse blue lights on their vehicle. It is reservedfor emergency vehicles only.

The Justice Project South Africa is currentlycampaigning to have the use of blue lights forpoliticians declared unlawful. We asked readers what they think about theuse of emergency lights by politicians and thelocal SAPS driving with it on permanently?
