    Dear Christian Friends:

Happy New Year fro m Zimbabwe There

    were

many activiti es, disappoi ntments, sadn ess,

    and

    joys

    f o r me

    in 1994, but God

    was always with me.

    After a short

    visit

    with

    my

    sisters

    i n

    December

    1993, I

    returned

    to my

    work among the women's

    groups.

    We had

a very, busy work sch edule set up for

    the

year. We planned to work with

    1 7 g r o u p s o n

    a b a s i s

    of

    weekly,

    b i - w e e k l y ,

    monthly or

    b i - m o n t h l y . S e v e r a l

    of

    t h e s e g r o u p s

    are

    a five-hour

    drive

    from

    Chinhoyi, During

    the

    year,

    two groups

    dropped

    from our schedule,

    and we started

    three new ones.

    At

    one

time besides our Bible Studies and

    other activities,

    we

    were working with

    1 2 groups.

    My

    three tutors

    are a l l

    hard workers

    and

    willing

    to jump in and help

    whenever

    they

    are

    a s ke d .

    Bec ause of

    t h i s ,

    we were

    asked

    to help in

    three

    weddings.

    Our African

Evangelists have all been married f o r

    several years accordin g

    t o the

    Afri c an

    custom,

    b ut have all decided

    t h a t

    they

    m u s t

    have a Christian

    ceremony.

    F o r m a n y

    o f

    th e

    things, like

    acquiring a

    house,

    getting

    certain licenses, passports, and other

    documents,

    they need a

    Christian marriage

    certificate. So

    the

    tutors and

    I

    found

    ourselves

    w o r k i n g in

    kitchens

    and

    h a l l s ,

    preparing food

    out in the

    open

    in the

    villages and dressing

    the

    brides. To be

    asked

    to

    dress

    a

    bride is

    a very big honor

    to the Africans,

    a n d

    the

    b r i d e s

    all a s k e d

    me to

    help dress them.

    This

    includes

    getting their

    clothes wearable,

    fixing

their hair, and putting on mak e-up. At one

    we d d i n g ,

    t he five

    b r i d e s m a i d s

    l i ked

    w h a t

    I

    was doin g t o

    the

    bride and

    all

    decided

    t h a t

    Ambuya Pickett

    must

    put

    make-up on them

    a s

    well,

    More and

    more

    as we

    traveled, we see the

    ravages o f

    AIDS, We

    see Christian women su ffering

    along with their

    children,

    because

    the

husband is promiscuous and has brought

    the

    disease

home to his wife. We comfort many of

    our women

when their grown up children are dying of

AIDS, Many grandmothers are now being

    pressed

    into service as mothers a g a i n , because their

    grandchildren

    are being left

    as

orpha ns. There are at least fi ve to eight funerals a day

    sometimes

    i n

    the High Density

    or

    African Sector

    o f

    C h i n h o y i .

    As

    time

    rolled

    by, I f o u n d

    myself havin g

    a

    h ard

    time

    w i t h m y left

    shoulder

    and back whenever

    we traveled fo r a

    long dista nce, especially on

    the

    dirt roads.

    I

    was

    seeing

    my

    l o c a l doctor;

    but

he was only giving me pain pills, which

    was

    not correcting

    the

    situation. In October

    after

su f ferin g constantly from

    pain in

    me

    w i t h my work,

    but

    I h a d

    to look

    after him

    while

    he

    was healing.

    I pureed the food

    for

    him

while I was there; and left a small food processor for him, when I left for the

    States.

    I

    have since learned

    that he

    has lost

    two

    more teeth, b u t otherwise

    is doing alright. Praise

    the Lord

    for

the three ladies that work for me

    Earlier my big dog

    cat had to be
