    as l o u d

    c o u r s e

    of the

    morning,

    other

    women arrived

    from other groups.

    However, they

    h a d obeyed

    and

    only

    three or four

    from

    each group came. Me

    h a d

t o scramble around to ge t food en ough for

    all,

but ended up having plenty for over 45 women and several small children. They brought the

    food and did

all the cooking a nd would n't l e t me do a thing except

    t o t ell

    them where

everything was t o cook with. It is their custom to

    do

    a job for the

    person

    they visit,

lik e clean the house or yard or something. Sin ce my helper had already c leaned the

    house

    and had the yard

    w e l l

    trimmed, I said I h a d

    nothing

    for

    them

    t o do. Because

    they

    c o n t i n u e d

    to insist a n d since my

    spee ches from

    a ny

    of

    the

    women

    who

    wanted

    to say

something. We sang lots of hymns after the spee ches, then I spoke,

    and

    we

    h a d

    prayer

    together.

    The

    original

    two hours stre tched

    into

    seven

    They

boyfriend, and an other friend live

    in a

    one-room

    flat and

    have

    no cooking

    facilities,

    so

    the

g irls had agreed t o cook their ev eni ng meal each

    night. But wisely, they

    made them

    pay

    $100 a month for

    food, and

    they h a d

    to

    wash

the dishes each night. I was delighted to

see that the girls now realize the responsibility of preparing meals for a

    family.

    They

    b o t h do a

    beautiful

    job

    of cooking

    huge

    portions

    for

three growing boys. But they were

    glad for

my retu rn, so that new

    menus could

    b e

    planned. We

    three

    take

    turns cooking

    and

a lso help one a nother.

    I t

    a g r e e d to change it when

    I

took the truck to him for the 5,000 kilometer service. Because

    I

    h a d a

    Christian

    Women's Church Conference to

    go

    to at Mashoko Mission in the low v e l d a n d

    just

    a few h o u r s

    from the

    b o r d e r , I p l a n n e d

    to take the

    truck o n d o w n

    south for the

    s e r v i c e

    and canopy change.

    On

    April 11, I

    loaded

    the truck up

    with

s - i x women and their luggage and headed

    for Mashoko

    Mission

    for the

    conference.

    W e spent

    four

    days with

    the women

    in

    classes,

    singing,

    and attending work

    shops. On

    Sunday the

    women with me

    headed

    for

    home

    on

    the bus, and I headed

    on

    to South

    Africa. I went

    via

    Chiredzi

    and

    the

    home of my

    dear

    friend Marilyn

    Richards. There

    the

    canopy was

    removed

    as it

    had been

    sold there. Monday

morning found me on my way for the

    three-hour

    drive to the border. Another

    hour from the

    border

    in the town of

    Louis Trichard,

    the truck was serviced.

    O n Tuesday, I

    drove two

    hours further into

    South Africa

    to

    Roquietereus

    and the

    factory

    where

    the lovely

    new

    canopy was

    fitted. Wednesday

    found

    me back on the

    road

    again

    to Zimbabwe.

    I came v ia

    Chiredzi to pick-up some things

    I h a d

    to

    leave

    there,

    and

    I spent the

    night.

    I

    was

    on the

    road

    again at

    6:30 a.m.

    for the

    6

     1/2

    hours

    drive

    to Chinhoyi with

    rest

    stops in Masvingo and

    Harare. The truck

    is

    now

    very

    beautiful, as you can

    see by

    the

    picture.

    But

    more importantly, I can

    see

    clearly

    behind

me at all times, which was

    not

    so

with the first canopy. The truck is

    a

    financial blessing because

    it

    takes very

little diesel fuel to run it in

    comparison

    to

    petrol,

    (now over

    $5 American

    money

    per

    gallon).

    I

    have

    done.

    July,

    August, a n d September were filled with lots of t r a v e l and meetings. Our evangelist,

    Michael

    Nyandoro,

    remained

    September 22,

    w h i c h

    Each

    Thursday,

    I

    try to

visi t our outlyi ng churches

    a n d

    t h e ir

    women s

    groups.

    O f course, every group

    feels t h a t I should

    only come to t h em. For t h e

    present, I am

    just

    visiting and encouraging

    t he

    groups.

    When

    Mr. M a r s h a l l returns next year,

    I will

    start

    more groups on

    a

    permanent basis.

    Each year

    in

    September

    our

    African evangelists hold

    a

    Leadership

    Training

    Seminar for local

    leaders of

    our Shona-speaking church es.

    Men

    from all over

    W es t Province come t o

    Chinhoyi for

    five days

    of workshops, preaching,

    teachi ng, singing,

    and of

    course,

    eating.

    Again

    I

found myself traveling about with Brother

    Sibanda,

    our evangelist here

    in

    Chinhoyi,

    doing

    the shopping for th e

    men s

    meeting. Fortunately, I was only the t a x i a n d errand

    runner

    this

    t ime,

    as t he women of

    t h e

    church

    did

    a l l

    Thirty-five

    men

    registered from

    outlying areas

    and s e v e r a l from

    the l o c a l church

    attended

    as

    They consumed 200 kgs.

    extras

    needed t o m a i « t i i v

    the

    African

    people have

    a

    of harmony.

    Even without

    an

    As

    I mentioned

    in my

    previous newsletter now

    that

    Linda

    Marshall

    is

    gone,

    I have

    b e e n playing

the piano on Wednesday and S u n day nights alternating with other pianists. Occasionally, I

    have b e e n called u p o n to play for church

    services

    on Sunday morning. Not b e i n g a n

accomplished pianist, I become petrified when asked

    to

play on Su nday morning before the

    whole congregation. However,

    the

    Lord

    gives

    me

    strength

    to do it.

    An

    opportunity arose

    for

    me

    to take

    piano lessons

    from

    an excellent teacher

    here in

    Chinhoyi,

    so I

    squeeze

    in an hour

    for

    lesso ns each

    w ee k an d t r y t o squeeze

    I

    sometimes

    feel

I just don't have the time, but it is something I

    enjoy. It

    gives

    me

    a s m a l l respite from

    t h e e v e r y d a y r o u t i n e .

    In M r . Marshal l 's

    absence,

    i t was

    necessary

    for

    me

    to handle another

    u npleasant

    d u ty . T he

    first responsibil ity was handling

    the

    affairs

    of

    Michael's accident, and

    the

    second

    was

    having

    Great

    She was close t o

    it had t o

    She was

    He protects me personally,

    M y

    girls

    are doing

    fine. Irene

    is without

    a job

    again.

    The

    shop where

    she worked sold at

    the

    end of

    September, s o

Irene is in l imbo again .

    She

    wan ts

    to take a bit

    of

    leave

    before

looking for another position. Kina is busy with

    h e r

    job

    a n d

    doing

    hairdressing, catering,

    and

    decorating

    cakes

    in her

    spare

    time.

    All

    three

    of

    us

    are

    going

    t o

    South Africa

    for

    a

week. I need to take my truck down there for

    its

    20,000 kilometer services, so we

    are

    u s i n g

    the opportunit y

    to have

    a little vacation. Kina went

    with me

    when

    I brought the

    truck back;

however, Irene has never been dow n there. We are looking forward

    to

    being together.

    I occasionally overdue

    otherwise I

    am

I have had a few sniffles, but

    overall

have been amazed t ha t God seems

    me an

    extra

    of

    strength

    to

    get

    everything

    I
