    FEBRUARY I^WSLETTER 1990

    Dear hristian i'riends:

    There is

    a

    song entitled

    Where Have All

    The

    Flowers

    Gone , but I

    would like

    to

    ask

     Where

    has

    all the time

    gone? .

1989 is a year of the past and 1990

    is

    well on

    it's

    w a y

    Praise the Lord, this

    y ear

I am planning on coming home for a few months and will b e so

    happy to

    see all

    my relatives

    and

    friends.

    Just a brief word

    to bring

    you up

    to

    date

on events here in Chinhoyi. Last Septem

    ber the fourth lu m b a r disk

    in

my spine literally ex ploded, scattering fragments in the

    sciatic

    nerve area. Needless to say,

    I was

    in a

    lot

of pain. My local doctor tried to

get an appointment for me with

    one

    of

    the

best neurologist in Africa, but he v/as

    unable

to see me before October. At

    first

    I did

    not

want to have surgery, but after six v/eeks

of suffering, I agreed. I was unable to carry on my womens classes, as the rough

    roads

aggravated the condition. I entered the hospital on November 25th, had tests the next

    day Md surgery v/as scheduled

    for

    the following

    day.

    Well, as

    usual, one can

    never

    count on things

    too

much in Zimbabwe staying on schedule, so surgery was cancelled for

    lack of an

    anesthetist and

    rescheduled. To make

    a

    long story

    short, I w a s

    finally

    scheduled for surgery on January

    2nd,

    this year.

    All v / e n t

    w ell

    and

    after

    ten days

    in

    the hospital

    a i n d

    ten day s at

    a

    friends home

    in Harsire,

    I returned

    t o m y

    home

    in Chinhoyi

    to

    recuperate o

    driving, no lifting, no bending).

    And for

    this

    I

    praise God.

    Due to

    t h e

    many

    prayers on my behalf,

    both by you and my

    friends

    here, my

    recovery

is coming along nicely. My doctor asures

    m e that I

    will b e

    fully

    recovered in time to

    malce

    the long f lig h t

    to Indiana in

    April. I

    see

    the

    specialist on

    J'ebruary 19th

    and

    expect to

    be released

    and

    start slowly back

    into the

    work.

    Mrs Custudio, my African assistant,

    in

    the womens literacy classes, nutrition,

    sev/ing

    and

    Bible

    classes,

    has talcen over

    my

    ?th grade Scripture

    class.

    She v/ill try to

keep the closest classes to Ghinyoyi

    active,

but due to transportat ion, she will

    not

    be

able to keep them all functional. Hov/ever,

    v/hen

one door closes, God opens another,

    and

    Mrs

    Custudio

    now

    has

    a new

    group of

    ladies

    meeting

    at the Shona

    spealcing church.

This church is in the high density area, ministered to by >Ir.

    Sibanda, our

    evangelist.

    He

    v/as amazed

    v/hen 100 illiterate

    women came

    to

    the

    first

    meeting.

    I

have hired two other ladies to help Mrs. Custudio with the teaching, as we

    n o v ;

    have three

    groups. Some

are completely illiterate, some with lower grade

    2)

    education, and some with

    a

    bit

    a

    orei

    My-adopted daughters mother

    is

    lirane-

    of

    the—

    completely illiterate

    classes and

    she came

    to

    visit m e

    and was

    so happy

    to

    show me how

    she could

    vo'ite

her name. But we never forget our

    main

    purpose,

    that

    is to tell

    the

    Good

    News.

    We

always give a Bible lesson after class, and the

    church,

    itself, is

    being

    strenghtened

    through the v/orking

    of

    the

    Holy

    Spirit among the

    v/omen

    in these

    groups.

    I

plan to visit the other groups before

    I

    leave,

    and

    assure

    t h e m I

    will resume

    their

    classes on my

    return

    to Zimbabwe.

    The Lord willing, I

    / i l l

leave Zimbabwe on April l8th, arriving in Indianapolis

    April

    21st. I

    v/ill visit

    my

family and try to meet a full schedule

    of

    V.B.S classes,

    spealcing dates,

    plus

    the Convention

    Then

    in

August, I will fly to Csilifomia

    to

fellov/ship wi th my Living Link Church

family (First Christian Church in Napa)

    and other churches

    in the area.

    My

    girls

    will

    stay

    in Chinhoyi

    and

    take care of my

    pets

and the house. I am happy

    to

    say that they

    have

    both

    grown

    into

    beautiful, responsible adults.

    AUGUST/SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 1990

    Dear

    Christian Friends:

Time certainly has a way o f getting

    away

from one . My last newsle tter was written

    in

    February

    1990

    and

much has happe ned since then. In

    my last letter, I reported

    that

my surgery was over and my recovery was

    doing well.

    My complete recovery

    has

    been

    beautiful and

    I

    now feel better than

    I

have for several years. Oh, there are the

    usual aches and pains one

    has

    from time

    to

    time

    but

    a

    bit of rest

    seems

    to

    do wonders.

    I

    was

    able

    to cl o se

    down

    most

things and get r eady for my

    tri p to

    the States in

    April. Marcia

    Kay Thompson

    and

    I traveled

    together and

    had a

    very lovely time.

    We

    were able

    to

visit Amsterdam, Holland in the heart of the

    T u l i p

    s eason and oh what

    a

    lovely

    sight

that was. We visited one o f the experime ntal laboratorie s

    and

    flower

    gardens

    just

    outside Amsterdam. I never knew

    that there

    were so many varieties of

    tulips and other related flowers.

    All

this beauty reminded me of the verse in Matthew

6:28 - And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe

    how

    the lilies

    of

    the field

    grow;

they do not toil nor do

    they

    spin.

Arriving in the States on April

    21st,

I had a good reunio n with my sisters and

was able to rest before beginning a full

    speaking

    program for

    the summer.

    Every

    Sunday

    in

    May was

    filled with speaking

    at

    some of

    my

    supporting

    churches

    in

    .Indiana

followed by three continuous weeks o f V.B.S. in various Churches in June. July

    saw

    me in Kansas

    City, Mo, for the North

    American

    Christian

    Co nvention. Along with

    several

    other missionaries home from

    Zimbabwe, I

    helped

    to man

    the Central African

    Disp lay Booth and it

    was

    a

    joy

    to meet

    many old

    friends once again.

    The last

    week

    of July

    I

was in volved in the fourth V.B.S. o f the

    sximmer

    finishing up on Friday

    night

    and then flying out

    here

to Napa, C alifornia o n Saturday morning and beginn ing

    their

    V.B.S,

    the

    following

    Monday.

    I

    will be doing

    some

    part time work in

    the

    church

    office

    over the next four months

    and getting acquainted

    with new

    people and

    renewing

    acquaintance with many

    old ones.

    News

    from

    my girls

    in

    Zimbabwe

    is

    good. They are

    living in

    my

    home

    and taking

    care

of my animals in my absence

    and

    doing

    a

marvelous job. They have had three un-

    weIc6me~visitors recently in

    the

form of three hooded Egyp tian cobra snakes. The man

    who works

    in

    my

    yard

    managed

    to

    kill all

    three

before anyone was injure d. It is

    winter time and the snakes

    evidently

    decided that my

    back

    varanda

    was

    a

    warm

    place

    to

    stay.

    Before

    I left

Zimbabwe the decision was made to sell my Volkswagen Jetta Car as

    it

had proven not to be practical

    for

    use

    on the

    bush roads (gravel,

    potholed, rocky roads)

    The money from

    the

sale was to cover my stationary expe nses while I was out of the

country...salaries for three literacy teachers, man to take care

    of

    my prop erty, house

    payments of $500 a

    month.

    Unfortunately the car was not

    sold

    before I le ft but

    Bro.

    Dale

    Marshall, my co-worker

and boss, graciously covered my bills

    until

    the car

    should

    sell. The girls

    called this week to

    inform me

    that the

    car

    has

    sold. My main

    project this furlough then is

    to

    raise $15,000,00

    to

    purchase

    a

    new truck

    and

    enough

    spare

    parts

    in South

    Africa

    to import into

    Zimbabwe. The

    five

    V.B.S. school s have

    raised in

    the

neighborhood of $4,000.00 toward that goal.

    I

    would ask

    your

    prayers

    and support that this

    goal

    might be reached

    in

    time to order the

    vehicle

    and get

impor t pap ers p repared so that I might pick

    it

    up

    in

    South Africa

    on

    my return there

    Jan.

    My plans

    upon returning

    to Zimbabwe will

    be

    to go

    into

    full

    time

    literacy and Bible

study classes with the illiterate Christian women

    in our 70+

    Shona spea king churches

    around

    Chinhoyi.

    Much

prayer will be needed to undergird this work

    and

    my health and

safety in the many miles of

    travel

    required.

    Contrary to what

    most

people believe that a Missionary Furlough is a rest and

    vacation, it certainly

    isn't.

    Not

    only do

    we keep a busy schedule

    here

    in

    the States

    but

    we also retain responsibilities overseas.

    But

    God somehow makes everything

    balance.

    It is

    time

to bring this to a close with my gratefulness

    for

    the

    many

    blessings

    I

    have

    received

here in the States. I appreciate so much all

    those

    people who have

     taken me into their

    homes. Everyone

    has

    been a

    great blessing-1©—mo.-

    Once

    again

    I

ask that you be in prayer

    that

    the funds

    for

    a stronger vehicle be supplied

    so

    that the planned literacy

    work

    can go

    on.

    Yours in Christ Judy
