    1996 Newsletter

    Dear Christian Friends:

    Time passes

    so very

    quickly, and

    i t seems

    like

    I g e t

    c a u g h t up in

    activities and

    don t

    g et

    the

    things done

th a t I should, like writing a newsletter. Six busy months have passed in

    California,

    and

    now

    I

    am in Indian a

for th e la st six

    months

    of

    m y furlough

    in

    t h e States.

    My first

    three

    months

    in California were

    plagued

    with

    troubling

    minor

    health

    problems, but

    now I seem t o be fine.

    Of

    course, th ere

    will

always be the problem of getting older and t h e

    body adjusting or

    complaining

    a bout g e t t i n g older.

    I arrived in Indiana

    just

in ti me for some snow

    storms.

Some areas of t h e States have

    been

    hard h i t

    w i t h

    snow storms an d then

    floods

    when the snow melts. I

    received

    good

    news from

Zimbabwe that it has been receiving

    good rains

over most of the country since November.

    Praise

t he Lord for the relief th e people are getting from ei gh ts yea rs

    of

    drought in

    most

    of

    the area^. Now perhaps

    t he people

    will

    be able to

    harvest

    enough

    crops

    to

    feed

    their

    families

    this

    next

    year.

Mai Custudio, m y African assistant,

    has

    been sending me good reports

    of

    the women s work.

    She

    and

    t h e

    other two ladies t h a t I left

    in

    charge of

    the w ork

    are doing a great

    job.

    They

    of

    course cannot

    go to

    the distant places

    t h a t I drove to

    in the truck, but

    they

    do

    visit

    the

    groups t h a t can be reached

    by

    bus. In fact,

    they

    have begun

    a

    new work in three other

    churches which

    can

    be reached

    by

bus. They are teaching literacy, Bible

    studies, and small

    sewing projects. I praise the

    L o r d

    for their dedication

    and

    thei r dependab ility. This

    i s

    the

    first

    time I have b e e n on furlough tha t I

    f e e l

the women s work is able to continue i n

    my absence.

    My

daug hters seem to be doing

    fine.

    Irene

    is

    returning

    to

    her

    old

    self

    slowly

    and has

    made

great progress. Kina has had some health problems and now suffers from hypoglycemia . She

    has lost 20 pounds

    of

weight th at she couldn t afford

    to

lose. However, she tells me she

    is

    gettin g better.

    Please

    continue

    to pray

    for

    the

    work in Zimbabwe

    and

    for

    me, as I

    travel these

    next months

    to inform

    churches

    of

    the work

    being done in

    Zimbabwe. Thanks

    to

    those

    who have contributed

    in t h a t

    w a y , I

    now

    have

    a beautiful

    lap-top

    computer,

    which will

    certainly

    make m y work

    more

    efficient. Thanks

    t o

    Mr.

    Odel Taylor

    for his contribu tion of a cam recorder, w h i c h

    will

    make

it possible t o record my

    work

    and present it to

    you

    a t

    home in a more

    interesting

    way.

    I

    will be

    purchasing

    other equipment in Z i m b a b w e which will include:

    a second file

    cabinet to

    hold my

    bible

    lesson m ate rials and

    a

short wave radio for my truck, so I can communicate with

    fellow missionaries when

    I am in

    t h e bush.

    Many of t h e

    roads

    I travel are isolated; and i f

I should break down, it w ould be ha rd t o call for he lp. My

    Isusu

truck is now six years old,

    has seen

    many

    miles, and

    is

    beginning

    to det eriorate . It

    will

    need

    to be replaced

    in

    t he

    future, i f I continue t o ca rry on

    t h e

    bush work.

    Please

    b e in prayer for t hese

    needs.

    Thank

    you

    for your

contin ued f in ancial and prayer

    support

    durin g

    this

    year while

    I

    hav e been

    in the States.

    Thinking

    th e n th ey

    would

    I had requested

this the y served me a dinner

    salad while was on

    have

    a problem. The rest

    of the

was uper. We were ate of cou rse, and was o ncern ed

    that

    myday

    ut

    after

    storing

    hotel,

    found my oom

    When checked my u g g a g e

    at

    Zurich, the clerk

    said,

    Oh, o ur l u g g a g e i s

    already

    checked to Harare.

    I said, No,

when checked i n at Cincinnati, the y

    would

    n ot

    l e t

    me check them l l t f

    i e way to

    Harare. The clerk said. he

    computer says

    o u r

    bags

    re checked to

Harare . After convincing her that the computer

    was

    wrong and my u g g a g e

    was

    ndeed

    on

    er

    scale,

    s he c h a n g e d

    ie information

    i n

    the

    computer a nd

    proceeded to

    check my

    u g g a g e

    to Harare.

    God was t i l l in

    control,

    and thus

    arrived

    in

    Harare

    safe and
