THE CARDINAL’S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP
APPEAL 2018 MATCHING GIF: Talking Points for
Anonymous Matching Gift Opportunity Some of you may
have received a recent letter from Cardinal Dolan as a “last
chance” to participate in this year’s Cardinal’s Annual
Stewardship Appeal. This year, due to the generosity of an
anonymous donor, we have a ¬first-of-a-kind opportunity
for our parishioners: the chance to double the impact of
your donation to the Cardinal’s Appeal. This donor will
match – dollar for dollar – all new contributions made
between now and October 31, up to $1 million – resulting
in a $2 million contribution to the Appeal. The good news,
not only will your gift me matched, our parish will benefit
since the matched gift will count towards our parish’s
individual goal, which is currently at $17, 000.00! If the

archdiocese is able to fully match this gift, we will reach
our $20 million goal. Even during current troubling times
like these, the needs of the archdiocese do not go
away. Parishes still need support to operate, our Catholic
schools and religious education programs and ministry
groups still need to function to spread the Word of
Jesus. Thank you for your attention and any support you
may be able to give to this matter.
Commitment Weekend: As you may have already
heard, due to the generosity of an anonymous donor,
we have the chance to double the impact of your
donation to this year’s Cardinal’s Appeal. This donor
will match – dollar for dollar – all new contributions
made between now and October 31, up to $1 million –
resulting in a $2 million contribution to the
Appeal. The good news for our parish is the matching
part of the gift will benefit the parish since it will
count towards our parish’s individual goal, which is
currently at $9300.
CHRISTMAS RAFFLE: Our parish organizes four
major fund raising activities in a year to ensure our parish
remains financially self-sustaining. In so doing, we avoid
the danger and implication of borrowing money to maintain
the parish. Our 2018 Christmas Raffle tickets are being
sold by designated members of the parish. Please
participate in promoting this activity by buying or selling
the raffle tickets to friends and relatives. Besides there are
great Prizes like 1st prize a trip to FATIMA AND
LOURDES (PORTUGAL AND FRANCE) (value $3000)
low Season, 2nd Prize – 55” TV, 3rd Prize – Nintendo

PRAYER OF ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL:
St. Michael the Archangel defends us in battle. Be our
defense against the wickedness and snares of the
Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust
into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the
world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Every Advent, the Liturgy of the Word gives our sense of
time a reorientation. There’s a deliberate tension in the
next four weeks’ readings—between promise and
fulfillment, expectation and deliverance, between looking
forward and looking back.
In today’s First Reading, the prophet Jeremiah focuses
our gaze on the promise God made to David, some 1,000
years before Christ. God says through the prophet that
He will fulfill this promise by raising up a “just shoot,” a
righteous offspring of David, who will rule Israel in
justice.
Today’s Psalm, too, sounds the theme of Israel’s ancient
expectation: “Guide me in Your truth and teach Me. For
You are God my Savior and for You I will wait all day.”
We look back on Israel’s desire and anticipation knowing
that God has already made good on those promises by
sending His only Son into the world. Jesus is the “just
shoot,” the God and Savior for Whom Israel was waiting.
Knowing that He is a God who keeps His promises lends
grave urgency to the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel.
Urging us to keep watch for His return in glory, He
draws on Old Testament images of chaos and
instability—turmoil in the heavens; roaring seas ; distress
among the nations, and terrified people.
He evokes the Prophet Daniel’s image of the Son of Man
coming on a cloud of glory to describe His return as a
“theophany,” a manifestation of God.
Many will cower and be literally scared to death. But
Jesus says we should greet the end-times with heads
raised high, confident that God keeps His promises, that
our “redemption is at hand,” that “the kingdom of God is
near” .
