3rd Sunday in Lent Reflection We all have things in our lives that don't belong there. Maybe it's the poor way we
allow someone to treat us, maybe it's a habitual sin, maybe it's a pattern of thought or
attitude that traps us in a cycle of regret, anger, or an inability to forgive. Jesus has
bold words for us today: "Take these out of here."
When we hear the story of the Cleansing
of the Temple, it can be easy to look
down on the animal-sellers and money-
changers. However, they set up shop in
the Temple for a very practical purpose.
People needed to buy animals to sacri-
fice, they were going to sacrifice them in
the Temple: ergo, quite a convenient,
successful marketplace! For many of us, the negative influences in our lives don't
come out of nowhere. We might have considered them quite practical and reasonable
initially. We wanted to keep the peace, so we allowed someone to talk to us disre-
spectfully. A person hurt us deeply and we weren't prepared to let go of our resent-
ment right away. Over time, these can fester and corrupt our inner life in a way we
didn't expect. The response of Jesus is a strong one. "He made a whip out of cords
and drove them all out of the temple area." God wants us to be whole, healthy human
beings. He knows how destructive it is for our souls to be caught up sin - our own sin
and those of others. God's love for us is startlingly fierce. In a few short weeks we
will celebrate the culmination of that courageous love as Jesus goes to his death on
the cross.
In the meantime, Lent is an opportunity for cleansing and renewal. If we've allowed
into our lives things that don't belong, let today be the day we ask Jesus to clear them
out. It's not always easy or pretty, but it's necessary for our hearts to function the way
they were made. God will turn our tables over if we ask Him to. DAYLIGHT

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
During the season of Lent, we will have Eucharistic Adoration on
Wednesdays (March 14th and 21nd) from 9:00 am - 6:45 pm. Each Lent we are
called to reflection, prayer, penance and fasting. Eucharistic Adoration is an
opportunity for us to spend time with Our Lord in quiet prayer, meditation and
adoration. Also, some additional ways of prayer and reflection available at
Holy Sepulcher to enhance our Lenten journey are Daily Mass and Stations of
the Cross. The Lord invited us to come be in His presence and spend time
with him.

Our Catholic Faith:
THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
Our Lord Jesus Christ, initiated the Sacrament of Penance when He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit, if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23). He also said to Peter, “I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven” . (Matthew 16:19). With support of the scriptures, our Holy Catholic faith teaches that we are to confess our sins to an ordained priest. Also, referred to as the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession, the Sacrament of Penance consists of four essential elements: 1. Contrition: A heartfelt sorrow and aversion for the sin committed along with the intention to sin no more. 2. Confession: After an examination of conscience, the confessing of at least all serious sins to the priest. 3. Act of Penance: Satisfaction for sins committed and giving redress for injuries done. 4. Absolution: The priest forgives the sins using a special prayer and the sign of the cross. To help ensure the holiness of the Church’s
members, Catholics having reached the age of
discretion are required “to confess serious sin
at least once a year” (Canon 989).
To progress in the sacramental life,
Catholics are encouraged to receive the
Sacrament of Penance often with regularity,
even if they are not aware of any serious sin.
This is a great opportunity for parishioners to
ask God for his forgiveness and mercy during
this season of renewal and reconciliation.
There will be six priests available for the Sac-
rament of Penance. We invite and welcome
you to attend and be reconciled to God and to
one another. The Lenten Parish Service will
be on Monday, March 19 at 7:00 pm.

IT’S BEEN A LOOOONG TIME SINCE MY LAST CONFESSION
This Advent season, each Catholic parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will have their doors open and lights on Wednesday, March 21 from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. (Holy Sepulcher will have confessions from 6:00-6:45, Mass at 7:00 pm, and confessions after Mass until 8:30 pm.) If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a Saturday afternoon confession time, this is a
wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. “The Light is On For You”, especially if you haven’t been to confession in a while.
FROM FATHER BOB
On Saturday, March 3, 54 second graders from our Parish School and Faith Formation Program received the Sacrament of Penance for the first time. In doing so, they took their final and most important step in their preparation to receive First Holy Communion shortly after Easter.
I met with the classes over the past few months and discussed with them the importance of this beautiful sacrament in which their sins will be washed away and forgiven. In a real sense, the children who made their first Reconciliation remind us during this season of Lent that each of us is unfortunately marked and affected by sin. Nevertheless, the loving forgiveness of Jesus Christ is always present and offered to us in a most profound way in the Sacrament of Penance, which Christ Himself instituted on Easter Sunday (John 20:23), so that His ministry of mercy would continue until the end of time.

March 3 First Reconciliation for Second Graders
March 4 Faith Formation and CGS Classes
March 4 Liturgy of the Word 10:30a.m.
THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT: In today’s Gospel, we no-
tice that Jesus had strong emotions at times. The story
illustrates how fully human Jesus truly was, and how if we
are to be holy, we must fully embrace our humanness,
too. A full range of emotions is part of our humanity. It is
what we do with our feelings that shows how connected
we are to the divine. For instance, we should never act
in anger, but rather feel the anger and use its energy to
act out of compassion for self and others. As a family
decide to take compassionate action on something this
Lent.
THE THREE SCRUTINIES: In order to inspire in the elect
(those in RCIA) a desire for purification and redemption
by Christ, three scrutinies are celebrated. By this means,
first of all, the elect are instructed gradually about the
mystery of sin, from which the whole world and every
person longs to be delivered and thus saved from its
present and future consequences. Second, their spirit is
filled with Christ the Redeemer, who is the
living water (gospel of the Samaritan
woman in the first scrutiny, March 4 8:00a.m.
Mass), the light of the world (gospel of the
man born blind in the
second scrutiny, March 11, 10:30a.m.
Mass), the
resurrection and
the life (gospel of
Lazarus in the third
scrutiny, Saturday,
March 17 4:00p.m. Mass).
The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal off that
which is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the
seven elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is
upright, strong, and good. The scrutinies are mainly for
the “elect” but the faithful are encouraged to join in the
scrutinies to also benefit from them. We are all in need of
conversion throughout our lives, so we join with the
“elect” in scrutinizing our lives and pray for the grace to
overcome the power of sin that infects our hearts.

Have you signed up for 40 DAYS FOR LIFE yet? If you were not able to
join the March for Life in January, this is the perfect opportunity, closer to

IT’S BIG! But the Next School Fundraiser Won’t Even
Cost You a Dime!
We are always looking for a way to reach out beyond our border too, we
are gearing up for our next service project. Did you know that 300 million
children around the world do not have even one pair of shoes? 1.4 billion
people are susceptible to diseases that could easily be prevented by a
decent pair of shoes. We have an opportunity to improve the world! Let’s
gather our excess and let it be put to good use! Check your closets and ask
family and neighbors to check their closets too for shoes that are not being
used and yet are still in good condition to donate. They can be dropped off
at the school or at the church in the bin in the coat room marked “Shoe
Drive”. Student Council will be rubber banding the shoes and placing
them in bags of 25 pairs. Once we have 2500 pairs of shoes, we will send
them to countries in need, including Puerto Rico. Let our HSCS soul be
transformed into soles for others!
