Pentecost Sunday Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost
is described in the first reading from the Acts of the
Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of
fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already
arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from
John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his
resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be
with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord."
When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus
"breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"
This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to
the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground
and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being"
(Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man.
The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of like-ness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the
Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new
covenant.
In the pairing of these two readings-the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of
Jesus in John's Gospel -we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an
empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the
sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our
actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

Live the Liturgy "Lord, send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!" We only know that
the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or
watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of
“something” causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we
cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God.
Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus
change the way they live and conduct their affairs-all give witness to the
presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who
have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are
healed-all point to something greater than ourselves working and living among
us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit?
Eucharistic Adoration Day On Wednesday, June 13, we will have our monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed
Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:45
pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend
some personal time with Our Lord during this
special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives
can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let Him help us carry them. Sign up sheets will
posted in the Narthex with hours that will be open and in need of volunteers.

May, The Month of Mary
Our way to honor our Blessed Mother, and to help ourselves
more fully her example of love and obedience to God, is
through prayer and meditation on events in the life of Mary
and Jesus. That is what the prayer of the Rosary is designed
to help us do. The Rosary, prayed individually or with others, is a power-
ful form of prayer that has made a significant impact on
countless people’s lives around the world and thru the
centuries. It honors our Blessed Mother, thus pleasing her
son, Jesus; it deepens our faith; and it recognizes the power of Mary’s
intercession, as we continually ask her to “pray for us’.
Since it is a prayer that every Catholic should be familiar with, two pages of
this bulletin are devoted to the Rosary—it’s history and how to pray it. This
would be a great opportunity (even if it’s been a while since you’ve “picked up
the beads”) to make use of this tremendous method of prayer and experience its
benefits in your life! (If you are need of a rosary, there are some available on
the Church Narthex hallway book shelf. There is no cost for them, other than
the personal commitment to make use of it by praying it.)
CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION
This week, we are taking up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to respond to Jesus in Disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support to struggling communities and to work toward peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around
the world. Please prayfully consider how you can support this collection. Learn more about the collection at : www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

Pentecost celebrates
the coming of the
Holy Spirit. The
Hebrew word for
spirit is ruah,
meaning “breath or
wind.” Speak the
word ruah aloud
and you will hear its
meaning! The image of wind is
used many times in the Bible:
To capture God’s creating power:
“When God created the heavens
and the earth...a mighty wind was
sweeping over the waters”
Genesis When God created human
being, “blowing into his nostrils
the breath of life: Genesis In a
symbolic way, God shows us that
life itself is a gift that comes from
God. Not only did God bring us
into existence, but He also wanted
humanity to remain close to Him.
The First Reading, from Acts of the
Apostles, describes a noise like a
strong wind that points to the
presence of the Spirit, ruah.
What insights do you find in the
Second Reading that could be
helpful to your spiritual life at
this time?
How are you empowered by the
Spirit today?
“Lord, send out your Spirit, and
renew the face of the earth.”
Vacation Bible School: June 18-21
Our parish is hosting an exciting Splash Canyon Vacation Bible School
this summer. It is a great time for kids to grow in faith as they explore
God’s Word.. Please help us meet our goals by providing support in
one or more of these ways:
• Pray for our volunteers and the children who participate
• Enroll your children or grandchildren and invite friends and neighbors
too.
• Volunteer to help. There are many jobs, even if you can’t be here the whole time.
• Donate supplies to offset expenses.
• Sponsor a child at Splash Canyon VBS. Note “VBS Scholarship” on the memo line on your check.
Thank you for your continued support of Christian education and
outreach at our parish.
May God bless our partnership in the Gospel as
we lead children to Jesus.

SHOE DRIVE
We did it! We made (and exceeded) our goal of collecting 2500 pairs of shoes.
And we couldn’t have done it without your support and generosity!
As a community, we are always looking for ways to reach out and support those in need, and this shoe drive
helped us do just that. Did you know that 300 million children around the world do not have even one pair of
shoes? 1.4 billion people are susceptible to diseases that could easily be prevented by a decent pair of shoes.
Our students spent time each week for the past 3 months, sorting and organizing the shoes. We were so
excited when the truck pulled up on Friday, and we were able to load 110 bags, for a total of 2,750 pairs of
shoes. The shoes are on their way to the Funds2Org warehouse, where they will be
distributed to counties in need, included nearby Puerto Rico.
Thank you for helping the Holy Sepulcher soul be transformed into soles for others!
