Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Reflection: Mark 5:21-43
Today's Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are
standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The
evangelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal
one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with
hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a
crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her
bleeding, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is
healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and
continues on to resurrect the young girl.
Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify
with one story -- the long-suffering woman or the
young, innocent girl -- and to move past the other. But
here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The
woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the
Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning.
Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us
had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain,
disappointment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died.
Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking
wounded" in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His
healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This
process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and
critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we
approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming
words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace."

On Wednesday, July 11, we will have our
monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed
Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:45

some personal time with Our Lord during this
special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives
can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let
Him help us carry them. Sign up sheets will
posted in the Narthex with hours that will be open and in need of volunteers.

On Mission for The Church Alive!
Your Abundance at the Present Time Should
Supply Their Needs, so that Their Abundance May
also Supply Your Needs—These words, taken from
today’s second reading, highlight the true nature of
The On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. All of
us, individually and in our parishes, are abundantly gifted. We each
bring to the table a variety of unique characteristics and talents that
are used to spread the Good News of the Gospel and bring Christ to
others. As our parishes prepare to come together as parish groupings,
and as we seek to form and strengthen relationships with our sisters
and brothers in the Church, the goal is not for these gifts to be trimmed
away and wasted. Instead, we are called to work to unite the many
ways we seek to do good in the world so that everyone, youth and
adults of all ages, can be support in faith and in life. What can you do
to help make your parish grouping The Church Alive!? What can oth-
ers do to help make your parish grouping The Church Alive!? Let us
be willing to both give and receive to make our parishes on fire with
the love and goodness of God. Visit www.onmissionchurchalive.org
to learn more and to stay informed.

Practice of Charity
The readings for today echo a call for Christians
to surround patients with love, support,
and companionship, easing physical, emotional,
and spiritual suffering. Facing death, they say,
is one of the most important things we can do.
Seek out someone who has companioned the dying as a
volunteer and listen to their stories.
Discern if this is a ministry to which you are called.
What is RCIA? RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initi-
ation of Adults, which is a process through which
non-baptized adults enter the Catholic Church. It can also
include those who have been baptized in other Christian
denominations who seek to enter into full communion with
the Catholic Church. Often baptized Catholics who have not
received other sacraments or who know little about the faith
or have not practiced their faith for some time participate in
the RCIA as a means to complete their initiation into the
Church. If you or someone you know would like to be a part
of this process, call the Faith Formation Office to register.
The sessions will begin in September.
