Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Reflection: Mark 6:1-6

If you have been closely following the

Sunday readings, today's Gospel could

sound a bit like a broken record. Four

weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus

visiting his home of Nazareth and being

poorly received by his family members.

Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he

preached, and his concerned relatives

came to bring him home. Jesus, they

thought, was out of his league.

Today Jesus takes things further. He re-

turns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching

from his house, he enters the synagogue.

He speaks eloquently. The listeners

acknowledge that "wisdom has been

given him" and recognize the "mighty

deeds wrought by his hands," but it is too

much for them to bear. "Is he not the

carpenter, the son of Mary?" The listeners

know his whole clan, his male and female

relatives. Jesus as carpenter was

acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher

was interesting enough to draw a crowd.

But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too

much. "They took offense of him."

As Christians, we have known the truth

of Jesus' identity since we were first

introduced to him. He is fully human and

fully divine. He is the second person of

the Trinity. It could be easy to look down

on these 1st century listeners for their

lack of faith. But where do we expect to

learn our own lessons? The more we age,

the easier it is to believe we understand

the world and how it works. We have

experience with people, with the Church,

with politics, and with the affairs of daily

living. We have developed criteria for

first impressions. We categorize. Today

we remember that the Christian life re-

quires humility. Jesus' listeners have an

expectation of how things should be, and

their lack of faith causes doubt in others.

"He was not able to perform any mighty

deeds there." Do your assumptions limit

your perspective? Who can you learn

from that you did not expect?

a rich Catholic tradition

• Holy Sepulcher serves children of all faiths

• Faith and values are integrated into the classroom environment, sports

and extracurricular activities and in service to the community

variety of other professional careers.

The goal of Holy Sepulcher School is that each child becomes a life-long

learner who strives to reach his or her fullest potential.

Eucharistic Adoration Day

On Wednesday, July 11, we will have our

monthly Eucharistic Adoration Day. The Blessed

Sacrament will be exposed from 9:00 am - 6:45

pm. This is a great opportunity for us to spend

some personal time with Our Lord during this

special day. Sometimes the burdens of our lives

can be so demanding, that the Lord asks us to let

Him help us carry them. Sign up sheets will be

posted in the Narthex with hours that will be open and in need of volunteers.

Join Holy Sepulcher’s Choir

The adult choir sings primarily for the 10:30 am

Mass on Sundays from September—May, but offer

their vocal ability for special liturgies throughout the

year. If you enjoy singing and have time in your

schedule to participate at least three times per month,

please consider trying it out. Often, choir members

are not trained musicians. The members usually have a love of music and

a pleasant voice that blends well with others. Rehearsals are on Thursdays

from 6:30-8:00 pm in the church. Contact Maddie DeRetito at

[email protected] or 724-694-9210 for more information or to join.

fice. Just call 724-586-7276 to let us know you are coming.

baptism in July, please have them get a form sent from their

parish to Holy Sepulcher parish office before the baptism.

Insights

We often miss the holiness right in front of us. We expect

God’s action to be flashy and otherworldly, whereas

Scripture and theology tell us that God acts through regular

people and everyday events. Often, we miss the sacredness

of the everyday because we are preoccupied with the past

or worried about the future—or, these days, because we

have our noses in electronic devices. Reflect upon what the

Jesuit paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin wrote:

“God is not remote from us. He is at the point of my pen,

my pick, my paintbrush, my needle—and my heart and my

thoughts.”

FAITH FORMATION CLASS– 2018-2019

To register your child/ren for the

Faith Formation classes for the

2018-2019 school year, go to our

web-page, Holy Sepulcher, and

find the registration form and

send it and the payment to Holy

Sepulcher Parish. Because the

classes fill-up so quickly, the

payment must accompany the registration form to

be placed in the class. We would like to have all

registrations by Monday, July 16, 2018 to order

materials for next year.
