Sunday Reflection John 1:35-42
"He first found his own brother Simon and told him,
'We have found the Messiah.'" After spending the day in
the company of Christ, Andrew took action. He shared
the good news! Instead of keeping his newfound
friendship with Jesus all to himself, Andrew invited his
brother into the fold. Andrew found Simon and "brought
him to Jesus." This was no small matter because Simon
would become Peter, the first pope! How important it is
to bring others along with us to meet Christ!
Yet, how often do we reach out with the kind of confidence that Andrew had? Are we
ready and willing to share our faith with our family and friends? Do we consider our
relationship with Jesus a gift to be shared, or a fact to be safely hidden away in our
personal prayer corner?
Part of our call as Christians is to evangelize others, to share with them the good
news of salvation. Loving Jesus and following his moral commands is essential, of
course, but it is not the end of the story. The Gospel message is meant for all people,
and we are meant to be its messengers. Sometimes this requires us to step out of our
comfort zone. It may mean speaking up when we'd rather be silent. It may mean in-
viting someone to Mass when they might say no. But it might also mean a conversion
for someone we care about. It might mean a new minister for the Church. Ultimately,
it might mean another saint in heaven.
None of that is up to us, however. What we can control is only whether we share our
faith joyfully and extend the invitation to others to experience the peace that comes
from knowing Christ.
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK
Sometimes it is difficult to hear God's call. We are trained to listen attentively and to
hear many things, but spiritual ones are often missed. God is calling us all of the
time. He is calling us to drink deeply of the well of life and not get distracted by the
superficial and short-lasting things we choose to cling to. Have we ever given a true
spiritual life and relationship with God a chance? Jesus says to us today, “Come, and
you will see.” May we take Jesus up on his invitation and like Andrew, the brother of
Simon Peter, be able to exclaim: “We have found the Messiah.”

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL PROGRAMS & DEPAUL SCHOOL FOR HEARING & SPEECH
The Pittsburgh diocese is home to two
nationally recognized educational
programs for children with speech
needs: St. Anthony School Programs &
DePaul School for Hearing & Speech.
A special collection to benefit these
two organizations will be taken next
weekend, Jan. 20-21.
St. Anthony School Programs provides
Catholic special education to children
with development delays and autism
in five elementary / intermediate
classrooms, two secondary classrooms
and two college-age programs located
on the campuses of Duquesne Univer-
sity and the University of Pittsburgh.
St. Anthony’s has also partnered with
Carlow University to add an academic
component to the curriculum for
qualified post-secondary students.
DePaul School for Hearing and Speech
provides Listening and Spoken
Language (LSL) education to children
who are deaf or hard of hearing. With-
out the use of sign language, DePaul
students learn to listen and speak and
successfully transition to their
neighborhood schools alongside
their peers with typical hearing.
Your donation will help St. Anthony
School Programs and DePaul School
for Hearing and Speech to further their
goals of providing quality educational
programs and services to their
students. In addition to supporting
children with special needs, your kind
donation counts toward your Parish
Share Assessment.
St. Anthony School Programs and
DePaul School for Hearing and Speech
warmly thank you for your continued
support of our missions.
Here I am Lord
There are many moments in the life of the Church when we
are filled with joy as others present themselves for the ser-
vice of God and others. Priests and deacons are called by
name and stand before the community as they are ordained
for the tasks of teaching, leading and sanctifying. Religious
men and women are consecrated to God as they promise
poverty, chastity and obedience of the sake of the kingdom. Lay leaders in the
Church are commissioned for their service as they share their gifts and exper-
tise for the good of our faith communities. However, the call of God is not lim-
ited to these. Has the invitation to follow God’s will or to serve his people gone
unanswered in your life? As the final preparations are being made for the On
Mission for The Church Alive! announcements, more will need to change than
just Mass schedules and clergy assignments. All of us should be willing to lis-
ten for and answer the call of God in our lives. Through this, more disciples
will step forth to serve the Church in new and creative ways. May our hearts be
prepared to enthusiastically respond, “Here am I, Lord; I come to do your
will!” Visit www.onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

CHINESE AUCTION COMMITTEE
UPDATE
The Chinese Auction Committee is
in full swing getting ready for the
Bazaar in August, 2018.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 16 in the Conference Room at
6:30 pm. (Note: Meeting room change.) A snack
will be waiting for you! We need volunteers to
help from now until the week of the Bazaar.
There are numerous ways you can
volunteer your time. Anywhere from now to 2 hours on the day of the Bazaar, to making phone
calls, picking up donated items, setting up, and
so much more. A few hours of your time is all we
ask. This is your church and you are invited to
join our team! The sales this time of the year are
ongoing.
Keep us in mind when you are shopping
for deals.
Crafters: we are always looking for your creative work to donate to the Auction. Winter is
the best time to craft. Plus it keeps us warm
knowing it will go to a good cause!
Save those BIG baskets you may have gotten a gift in for Christmas. If you don’t want the
basket, we could use them.
All donations can be dropped off in the coat
room, marked “Chinese Auction”. From the
Chinese Auction Committee to our Church
Family, we want to wish you a healthy, happy
and blessed New Year. May you receive God’s
gift that keeps on giving: the gift of love!
Happy New Year!

CELEBRATING GOD IN THE ORDINARY:
C hristmas is gone…decorations are down...the holidays now are
past..and our days have settled once more into the routine of daily living. Christmas Time ended with the Feast of the Baptism of the
Lord on Monday, January 8, and now we enter “Ordinary Time,” a
time to reflect on the life of Jesus and commit ourselves to following
him. It is in the ordinary days of our ordinary lives that God asks us to
build his Kingdom. The readings during these weeks take us through
the life of Christ. Striving to live Jesus’ example of love, reconcilia-tion, and healing can transform our most ordinary moments into
extraordinary moments of charity. St. Therese of Lisieux wrote:
“What matters in life is not great deeds, but great love.”
W inter days are cold and dreary...Winter trees are bare and life-
less… signs of new Spring life are weeks and months away. Where, then, do we look to find the hope that keeps us going?
Where, then, is our God who—always present—never leaves us?
“Little, star-shown Nativity child—
grown now to mature adult…
Hope of ancient prophets..
now works wonders in our midst.
Daily healing, always calling…
In our living—God is with us.
Miracle-working...daily surprising…
God in the ordinary–
Extraordinary Gift.”
W e remember that Jesus grew up in a Jewish family—and in
Jewish tradition, God was praised—always and for every-
thing—and all daily activities were done in thankfulness and offering
to God—and all of life was made holy as God’s presence was seen in
the ordinary.
G od of our days and God of our nights, God of the Sacred and God of the
ordinary—in thankfulness for your daily gifts and with belief in your
presence among us, we give praise. With God among us in providence—With Christ among us as guide—With
the Spirit among us as reminder of God’s infinite love for us all the days of
our lives—we give praise for this time to make holy the interaction in the
ordinary gifts that adds extraordinary grace to our lives.
Take time this week to look for God in the ordinary moments of your
life. What miracle did you find in your ordinary activities?
