TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — As a garden makes its growth spring up, so will God make justice spring up before all the nations (Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11). Psalm — My soul rejoices in my God (Luke 1:46-50, 53-54). Second Reading — Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:16-24). Gospel — I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord (John 1:6-8, 19-28).

The Sanctuary Candle is burning this week

in honor of Bob Ubinger’s

birthday.

Please pray for the peaceful repose of the souls of

Michael Michalisin and Robert Barber (son of Genevieve Barber)

who recently passed away and are enjoying everlasting life.

Reflection for the Third Sunday of Advent We can understand why a commission of inquiry was sent to the Baptist. Some Jerusalem Theologians expected a Messiah who would confer a baptism through which the Spirit would be poured out. Here is John, north of the Dead Sea, near the spot where Israel once crossed the Jordan to enter the Promised Land. He is conferring a water baptism, which signifies an acceptance of the call to repentance. Who then is this man who has the crowds running to him and who makes the great cry of the prophets ring out once more after three centuries of silence? John’s reply to the commission is surprising in its humility. No, he is not the Messiah. He is not Elijah returned (Mal. 3:23-24) nor the great prophet that is awaited (Deut. 19:18). This wholly negative statement of his identity must have left the inquirers dissatisfied. It is preserved in the New Testament because some of his followers preached a baptism which competed with that of the primi-tive Church. He declared himself to be only the precursor, a simple witness, a lamp lit by God for his Christ, the voice of the Word. We must also recognize our role as “Christ-bearers”, called to refer by our very lives to Jesus. This humble and self-effacing role is in no way a negligi-ble one. It is no small thing to ask us to prepare others’ road to the Lord.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Our Liturgy Committee asks for your help in decorating the church for Christmas. If you would like to “beautify” our church with flowers during the Christmas season, please use the specific Christmas flower envelope, which is in the December offering envelopes, or fill out the form located in the Narthex. The flowers can be in honor of someone, in thanksgiving or in memory of loved ones.

Advent Penance Service, Monday, December 15 Advent is a time for preparation, when we make ready to celebrate the mystery of Our Lord’s coming as man, the beginning of our

redemption. Advent also moves us to look forward with renewed hope to the Second Coming of Christ when God’s plan of salvation will be brought to fulfillment. We are reminded, too, of Our Lord’s coming to each of us at the hour of our death. We must make sure that He will find us prepared for His coming as the Gospel tells us “Blessed are those who are found awake when the Lord comes.” (Luke 12:37). This Service of Penance, which will be celebrated on December 15 at 7:00 pm, is meant to make us ready in mind and heart for the Coming of Christ, which we are soon to celebrate in the Mass of Christmas. We encourage all adults, high school and grade school students to attend this evening with their families. There will be six priests available that evening for the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation).

FORFAMILYDISCUSSION

from “Exploring the Sunday Lectionary” by Sandy Rigsby & Steve Mason

you bring God’s love to people

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 How does someone pray without stopping?

What exactly qualifies as a prayer? How can you develop the habit of praying throughout

the day?

John 1:6-8, 19-28 Why do you suppose light would be a symbol for Jesus?
