First Sunday of Advent Reflection Advent is a brief period of time which prepares Christians for the celebration of Christmas. Let us listen to Paul’s warning, “It is now the hour for you to wake from sleep, for our salvation is closer than when we first accepted the faith. The night is far spent, the day draws near.” Indeed, since the resurrection of Jesus, the life of people and society has made an irresistible change of course which rushes them toward their final end and judgment. We must decide for humanity and use all our energy to discover our future with God. The gospel of this Sunday puts us on the watch. It insists that we not be in a state of unreadiness and carlessness, that we not have a false sense of security in regard to the unforeseeable coming of the Son of Man. In the days of Noah, the people were overconfident in themselves and continued with the business at hand. Then, suddenly, came the disaster: they were take by surprise in their sleep, unconcerned with what was essential.

The image of the Lord coming as a thief in the night expresses the necessity of constant vigilance. “Here I stand, knocking at the door.” (Rev 3:20). In every age of history, the Church is in danger of failing to hear him who knocks at the door. He is there to awaken Christians to the call of the Spirit. Today, more than ever, the Church and all Christians must play the prophetic role of confronting a sleeping world which risks losing its soul. We should live so as not to be surprised by the judgment at the end of our lives and at the end of the world.

BISHOPS PROJECT SEALS AVAILABLE NEXT WEEK The Knights of Columbus will be handing out Bishops Project Seals in the Narthex after each Mass next Sat. and Sun. (Dec. 3 and 4). The Knights are asking if you would consider donating towards the seals which helps challenged youth and adults of the McGuire Memorial and Saint Anthony School Programs. Any donation large or small is greatly appreciated.

IN HONOR OF OUR VETERANS Our students invited their Veteran friends and families to school on Friday, November 11th. We celebrated mass, our younger students preformed a song, and we enjoyed lunch together. Thank you to all Veterans for your

service.

Band Concert We invite you to the Winter Band Concert

on Tuesday, December 13th at 7:00pm at the church.

“Come to us, Lord, and bring us peace. We will

rejoice in your presence and serve you with all our

heart.” (Communion Rite, First Week of Advent). Advent is a time of preparation, waiting, and joyful

expectation, as we direct our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the celebration of our Lord Jesus’ birth on Christmas Day. For a great Advent resource, go to the USCCB website: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/advent/index.cfm

their shyness so that they can share it with others in a loving way,” explained EVANGELIZATION On November 5, more than 600 people gathered at the Monroeville Conven-tion Center for the New Evangelization for the New Millennium Conference III. This conference helped the participants to bring out the convictions and beliefs they held in their hearts, as well as “giving them courage to overcome their shyness so that they can share it with others in a loving way,” explained Father Joseph Mele, head of the diocesan Secretariat for Leadership Development and Evangelization. This courage and encouragement is something we need to help us more boldly proclaim our faith. Let us pray for this courage to share the Good News of Jesus Christ - that He has come to transform the world, our lives and our hearts. We come to know this truth through knowledge, but even more so, through experience, an encounter with Christ.

Father Joe Freedy, who spoke at the conference explains that humility is the key that opens the door to this encounter with Christ:

“Don’t be afraid of your weakness,” he said. “Don’t be afraid of your wounds. Don’t be afraid that you don’t have it all together. Everyone wants to hear how much God loves them. Only with the gift of faith can we touch God. We find this encounter in the sacraments, and we must pray for the strength to act on our faith. Personal prayer lives are the key….And through intercessory prayer, we open our hearts and the hearts of those we are helping to limp toward the ultimate goal of heaven….Don’t ever give up prayer.”

Reflection:

♦ How can I be more courageous in sharing my faith?

♦ How is God calling me to deeper humility in prayer?

Advent Prayer Come, long-expected Jesus.

Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom

and power of Your Father and ours.

Receive my prayer as part of my

service of the Lord who enlists me in

God's own work for justice.

Come, long-expected Jesus.

Excite in me a hunger for peace:

peace in the world, peace in my

home, peace in myself.

Come, long-expected Jesus.

Excite in me a joy responsive to the

Father's joy. I seek His will so I can

serve with gladness, singing and

love.

Come, long-expected Jesus.

Excite in me the joy and love and

peace it is right to bring to the

manger of my Lord.

Raise in me, too, sober reverence for

the God who acted there, hearty

gratitude for the life begun there,

and spirited resolution to serve the

Father and Son.

I pray in the name of Jesus Christ,

whose advent I hail.

Amen

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Gathering on this First Sunday of Advent, we are reminded that we are called to be ever vigilant; living in expectation of the

second coming of Christ. With the busyness of our lives, it is easy to gloss over these beautiful four weeks and preoccupy ourselves with other things. However, now is the time to stop, wait, listen, and prepare ourselves for Christ's unexpected coming.

“Never be afraid to trust

an unknown future to

a known God.”
