MEETING on 25 March (6.30 pm for 7.00 pm start)

Bulletin Volume; 29 Issue No;17 25 March 2019

THIS MONDAY NIGHT 25 MARCH WE VISIT THE LINDFIELD ROTARY CLUB

NOTE THE TIME IS 6.30 PM FOR A 7.00 PM START

TONIGHT we are visiting the Lindfield Rotary Club for a resumption of the debates that we used to have against that club some years ago.

The composition of our team is Athur Marshall, Sue Ward and Ian Garrard, but keep that under tight raps until the night in case there is any attempt, between now and Monday night, by the Lindfield members (or even our own members) to indulge in a “little gentle personal persausion” or “side wagering” to influence the outcome of the debate. Zone Assistant DG Fiona Jenkins has apparently accepted an invitation to be adjudicator and she is not accepting any “brown paper bags” either.

Location; KILLARA GOLF CLUB

Time; 7.00 PM

Apologies; To Avis by 5.00 PM THURSDAY 21 MARCH at the latest

Topic of debate ‘Australia’s big four banks are too big and too powerful’.

Our club gets to select which side we debate.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

As we have delayed the golf day it is now critical that the wine and cheese tasting is successful.

We have committed to a number of critical causes, RNSH, Carevan and all our youth projects and this year we have relied on Bunnings to raise funds.

If each member was to bring 4 guest to the Wine and Cheese tasting night, we would be close to our target.

You will all be able to read the letter from the presidents of the Christchurch Rotary Clubs (see page 10). We will be asked to make a donation at a later date.

The Muslims working at TTW always went to the mosque with their fathers on Friday. If this was the case in Christchurch it means that there will be a large number of families that will be without their father figure and source of income.

We look forward to supporting our team in the debate at Lindfield next Monday.

We have been asked to run a breakfast for the mothers at Roseville Public school. Apparently they have tired of sandwiches and pastries. It will be in May. The board will discuss this at the next board meeting.

There are two Bunnings coming up in April (see dates in Bulletin). We need your assistance.

Our first meeting in April is a youth night. There will be two speakers.Unfortunately the student who went to the science school can not come due to HSC trials.

Look forward to seeing you at Lindfield meeting next Monday giving support to our debaters.

LAST MEETING - 12 MARCH 2019

Our Guest speaker, Jack Cannons from the Variety Club Bash provided an interesting insight into the conduct of the Variety Bashes and the fund raising achievements that are generated by the participants.

The Bash is not just about a group of people (men and women) travelling through the outback in their old cars and enjoying the remote and regional parts of Australia, but its mainly about fund raising and supplying educational, health and mobility equipment to local schools and organisations along the routes of the bashes. Jack highlighted many instances where the need of a child or grop of children had been met by the Variety club, when one would have expected that the needs were basis government responsibilies.

Participation in a bash is not cheap and in all could cost between $15,000 and $20,000 a car, but if there are 4 in the car the cost is around $5,000 each.

KILLARA HIGH SCHOOLMOCK INTERVIEWS

The Club has been participating in the Killara High School Mock interviews in previous years and the school has valued our contribution to their careers program highly, and has extended the invitation for the Club to partake in the program again.

The Mock interviews will be conducted this year on Wednesday 10th of April.

Youth Director David Brand is seeking volunteers to participate in these sessions. If not done so, please advise David if you are able to assist.

NEXT MEETING - 9 APRIL 2019YOUTH NIGHT

The club will be addresses by some of the students and young people who the Club has sponsored to attend RYLA, RAIC and NYSF youth programs.

Below are some notes on the those persons attending the Rotary Youth Night on 9 April

(1) Peter Taylor was sponsored by our Club to attend RYLA ( Rotary Youth Leadership awards) in January 2019 at Elanora Heights.

Peter is 21 years of age and is presently undertaking a Bachelor of Information Technology at Macquarie University.

His interests outside of University studies include scouting, in which he is the Venturer Chairman of 2nd Gordon Venturer Unit. He is also involved with cycling and kayaking.

(2) Mari Watkins will be attending the Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC) in Canberra in early April and will be sponsored by our Club.

Mari is a Year 11 student at Roseville College and was Year 10 Dux in 2018. She has received a number of awards including the Sydney University Academic Excellence Award 2018 and the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Award for Leadership and Teamwork in 2018.

(3) Madeline Carmody attended the NYSF ( National Youth Science Forum) in Canberra in January 2019 and was partly sponsored by our Club.

Madeline is a Year 12 student at Roseville College.

Unfortunately due to Year 12 assessments, Madeline will not be able to attend the Youth Night on 9 April. She has just received her final assessment notification and she has an assessment the day after April 9th, as well as an assessment the day of, so she will be unable to attend on the 9th.However we hope she will be able to provide us with a short written report of her experiences at the NYSF and this will be published in the Club bulletin for the meeting on the 9th April.

POSSIBLE COMBINED SYDNEY DISTRICTAt the Meeting on 9 April, the Club will vote on whether to proceed with discussions investigating the proposal to establish one Sydney District (Combining Districts 9685 and 9675).

NOTE This is not voting on whether the two districts should combine , but on whether disucssions on the amalgamations should be continued.

On 27 February, President Richard circulated to all members, some information from ADG Fiona Jenkins and DG Susan Wakefield, on how the combined District would work, and Frequently Asked Questions about the pros and cons of it.

Please make sure you have read these before the 9 April and remember at that meeting the club will be asked to vote;

Yes to continue the discussionorNo, not to continue the discussions at this time.

The links to 2 videos about the proposal are;http;//youtu.be/dW1_5jPhNKU and http://youtu.be/MiXR2pqEdmU

HARD YAKKA

• Volunteers will be needed to set up tables, chairs, wine and food on Saturday afternoon, to clean up after the event and possibly to return tables etc on Sunday morning.• During the event volunteers will prepare and serve the cheese platters and ensure that water jugs are filled and tables cleared.• We will also need one person to run the raffle and for 5 assistants to sell tickets.• A Rotary MC is needed to open the evening and generally work with the Wine Selectors presenter for the smooth running of the evening.

The success of the evening depends on what we can do before the event to promote bookings, sell raffle tickets on the evening and to reduce expenses by obtaining donations of food items.

THE HORROR IN CHRISTCHURCH - ROTARY SUPPORTMessage from PRID Noel Trevaskis, forwarded by DG Susan Wakefield.

Dear fellow Rotarians, Please see an email from the three Rotary Club Presidents in Christchurch regarding the recent terror attack in their city of Christchurch. Please consider supporting the appeal detailed below by the Presidents of the three Rotary Clubs in Christchurch. From the Club Presidents...... There are no words to sufficiently express the enormous sense of sadness and outrage regarding Friday’s events and the immense impact this has had on the local Muslim communities in the areas of the Riccarton, Linwood-Woolston and Ferrymead clubs and on our wider community as a whole. At an appropriate time in the near future we will seek to make contact directly with local leaders in the Muslim community to see how Rotarians can offer further support. In the meantime, we can act now by making a significant donation to a Rotary fund that has been set up to support the victims of this devastating attack. The account number for the fund being managed by the Riccarton club is:

03 0823 0350538 00 Reference: Mosque Appeal

We also condemn in the strongest terms the base values and attitudes directed towards our migrant community who have just as many rights as we all do to live life free from violence and prejudice. Those values are a complete anathema to the values of Rotary. Please support this appeal generously by making a donation to the account above. Yours in Rotary Shane Murdoch - President, RiccartonTheresa Shaugnessy - President, Linwood/WoolstonBarbara Crooks - President, Ferrymead

Bobbin Head Cycle classic (Bobbo) Sunday 24 March 2019 The 8th Bobbo is being organised by the Rotary Clubs of St Ives, Ku-ring-gai, Turramurra and Wahroonga.

It is the premier cycling event in Sydney.

Some key statistics from the 2018 event. • 2,500 cyclists participated and raised $200,000 of which 50% was donated to our charity partner, Lifeline. • The other 50 % was donated to the charities supported by the Rotary clubs organising the event. These charities are: Cromehurst Foundation, Eagle RAPS, The Hornsby Women’s Shelter, Bo Hospital, PLC Shore Sony Foundation, Hornsby Connect and KYDS. • Over 500 volunteers were involved to ensure the safety of the cyclists. There are 4 ride distances being 27km, 57km, 80km and 104km. The cost to participate varies with each ride.

Please see the website for full details: www.bobbo.com.au The committee is looking for additional cyclists especially more younger riders and more female riders.

We would appreciate if members will ask their friends to ride in the event or to volunteer as marshals.

HA HA HA

An elderly woman wakes one morning and looks out of her bedroom window. Across the road she sees two men from the local council office slowly making their way up the grassy embankment at the side of the road.

The man in front starts to dig a hole in the embankment and after some time moves forward and begins digging another hole. The second man then proceeds to immediately fill in the hole which the first man had only just finished digging. Perplexed by the odd behaviour of the men, the old woman continues to watch them to see if they will do the same with the next hole.

Surely enough, the men from the council continue this pattern for a good 30 minutes before the old woman, agitated with confusion and curiosity; decides it’s time to find out what the men are doing.

“Excuse me young man, what on earth is the point of this, what are you doing?” Says the old woman, “The point?” Says the first man, “The point is to improve the appearance of the roads in this area, to give them a more natural look”.“Natural?” Exclaims the woman, “How exactly does this make the road look more natural? All you’re doing is digging holes and then filling them in again!”, the two men exchange a disheartened glance before the second man yells “Well it normally looks better, but the fella who plants the trees is off today!”________________________________________________________________

There was this old priest who got sick of all the people in his parish who kept confessing to adultery. One Sunday, in the pulpit, he said, “If I hear one more person confess to adultery, I’ll quit!” Well, everyone liked him, so they came up with a code word. Someone who had committed adultery would say they had “fallen”.

This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things went well, until the priest died at a ripe old age. About a week after the new priest arrived, he visited the Mayor of the town and seemed very concerned.

The priest said, “You have to do something about the sidewalks in town. When people come into the confessional, they keep talking about having fallen.”The Mayor started to laugh, realizing that no-one had told the new priest about the code word.

Before the mayor could explain, the priest shook an accusing finger at the mayor and said, “I don’t know what you’re laughing about. Your wife fell three times this week.”
