PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

Unfortunately the last meeting was cancelled due to the damage done to a large area of the North Shore.

A number of our members and friends of Rotary were effected with loss of power for about a week.

The next meeting is an important meeting as it will decide how we will operate in the next year.

Two papers have bee circulated. These will form the basis of the discussion.

If you have not received these contact me.

We do have the option that other clubs have done when most of the members have been president. That is to share the president’s role between three people.

The Christmas party will be a casual event, very similar to last year except there is no Kriss Kringle, but attendees may make a voluntary donation to the Rotary Drought Appeal.

Don’t forget to bring a gift for the Tree of Joy and an optional donation for the bush fire people.

We then have a break until the fourth Tuesday in January, when Cliff Garrett will organise the meeting.

Richard GreenPresident.

A tremendous wind and rain storm swept across the North Shore area on the afternoon of Tuesday 26 November, causing significant damage to some houses, blowing down many trees and widespread blackouts for the afternoon and well into the evening .

The Roseville Golf Club was caught in the storm resulting in the cancellation of our scheduled meeting for the 26 November.

OUR CHRISTMAS COCKTAIL PARTY & THE DROUGHT “RAIN FROM NOWHERE”

I am sure we have all been quite moved by some of the stories of the hardship and emotional drain that the droughts have inflicted upon the families in farming communities throughout the State and the “dark thoughts” it has brought

Some time ago some of our members were priveleges to hear Murray Hartin address our Club. He recited his noted poem “Rain From Nowhere”.

I thought, in view of our decision about Kris Kringle, that it may be appropriate to include his poem about the ups and downs of farming, in this Bulletin.

Rain from Nowhereby Murray Hartin

His cattle didn’t get a bid; they were fairly bloody poor,What was he going to do? He couldn’t feed them anymore,The dams were all but dry; hay was thirteen bucks a bale,Last month’s talk of rain was just a fairytale.

His credit had run out, no chance to pay what’s owed,Bad thoughts ran through his head as he drove down Gully Road.“Geez, great grandad bought the place back in 1898,“Now I’m such a useless bastard, I’ll have to shut the gate.

“Can’t support my wife and kids, not like dad and those before,“Crikey, Grandma kept it going while Pop fought in the war.”With depression now his master, he abandoned what was right,There’s no place in life for failures, he’d end it all tonight.

There were still some things to do, he’d have to shoot the cattle first,Of all the jobs he’d ever done, that would be the worst. He’d have a shower, watch the news, then they’d all sit down for teaRead his kids a bedtime story, watch some more TV,

Kiss his wife goodnight, say he was off to shoot some roosThen in a paddock far away he’d blow away the blues. But he drove in the gate and stopped – as he always hadTo check the roadside mailbox – and found a letter from his Dad.

Now his dad was not a writer, Mum did all the cards and mailBut he knew the writing from the notebooks that he used at cattle sales. He sensed the nature of its contents, felt moisture in his eyes,Just the fact his dad had written was enough to make him cry.

Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Bulletin 11

“Son, I know it’s bloody tough; it’s a cruel and twisted game,“This life upon the land when you’re screaming out for rain,“There’s no candle in the darkness, not a single speck of light.“But don’t let the demon get you, you have to do what’s right;

“I don’t know what’s in your head but push the bad thoughts well away.“See, you’ll always have your family at the back end of the day;“You have to talk to someone, and yes I know I rarely did.“But you have to think about Fiona and think about the kids.

“I’m worried about you, son, you haven’t rung for quite a while,“I know the road you’re on ‘cause I’ve walked every bloody mile.“The date? December 7 back in 1983,“Behind the shed I had the shotgun rested in the brigalow tree.

“See, I’d borrowed way too much to buy the Johnson place;“Then it didn’t rain for years and we got bombed by interest rates.“The bank was at the door; I didn’t think I had a choice,“I began to squeeze the trigger – that’s when I heard your voice.

“You said ‘Where are you Daddy? It’s time to play our game’“I’ve got Squatter all set up, we might get General Rain.’“It really was that close, you’re the one that stopped me son,“And you’re the one that taught me there’s no answer in a gun.

“Just remember people love you, good friends won’t let you down.“Look, you might have to swallow pride and take that job in town,“Just ‘til things come good, son, you’ve always got a choice.“And when you get this letter ring me, ‘cause I’d love to hear your voice.”

Well he cried and laughed and shook his head, then put the truck in gear,Shut his eyes and hugged his dad in a vision that was clear.Dropped the cattle at the yards, put the truck away,Filled the troughs the best he could and fed his last ten bales of hay.

Then he strode towards the homestead, shoulders back and head held high,He still knew the road was tough but there was purpose in his eye.He called his wife and children, who’d lived through all his pain,Hugs said more than words – he’d come back to them again.

They talked of silver linings, how good times always follow bad,Then he walked towards the phone, picked it up and rang his Dad.And while the kids set up the Squatter, he hugged his wife again,Then they heard the roll of thunder and they smelt the smell of rain.

Last Wednesday evening, I attended the Cromehurst Graduation Dinner, where I presented the Rotary Club of Roseville Chase School Award.

The very worthy recipient was Year 12 student, Bronte Rule, who will be graduating from and leaving Cromehurst this year.

The Award was presented for Bronte’s All Round Performance. At the dinner, staff spoke of her remarkable improvements and achievements over the past three years at Cromehurst.

Our Club has had a long association with Cromehurst over many years, helping with their annual Golf Day, and building their Sensory Garden a few years ago.

Everyone at Cromehurst is to be commended for their outstanding dedication to helping the students – the staff, the parents, and the numerous volunteers who assist in various areas.

With fires on top of drought, our northern neighbours are really struggling. If you and/or your club are in a position to support, there have now been a number of RAWCS accounts set up to manage your donations: The projects are:• Queensland Bushfire Relief Appeal donations.rawcs.com.au/19-2019-20• NSW Bushfire Farmers in Need Appeal donations.rawcs.com.au/22-2019-20• Taree & Mid Coast NSW Bushfire Appeal donations. rawcs.com.au/41-2019-20.

Please talk to Community Service Director Peter Kirkwood if you have any plans to support our bush cousins so that a coordinated approach can be taken. And thank you all so much for what you have already provided to so many across our state. In case you are wondering if Shelterbox can or are supporting this disaster, ROWLEY TOMPSETT, Chair, ShelterBox Australia provides the following input to your questions:

“It’s been devastating to see the rapid spread of bushfires in Australia. Thousands have been forced to evacuate their homes, and the country is bracing itself for ‘the most dangerous bushfire week ever seen’. Our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues at ShelterBox Australia.

At this time, we’re not sending a team to provide shelter aid. We’re monitoring the situation closely and will provide an update if anything changes.• While New South Wales and Queensland have both declared a state of emergency, the Australian Government has not made an international request for emergency shelter. Core infrastructure, like power, communications, roads, hospitals and schools, is likely to be repaired quickly compared to other countries.• Our core items – including tents, tools and tarpaulins – are unlikely to be an acceptable solution for Australian families, particularly with temperatures of 40C expected.• Local teams already have good capacity to respond and start the recovery process. This is due to the high-quality infrastructure, social support, availability of resources, and the preparedness activities of Government teams.”

Article By Michael S. Turner -A Theoretical Cosmologist From the Zone 7A, Membership Newsletter, July - September 2019.

Speak the Language• Don’t talk about “events” they should attend. Instead, promote the opportunities and experiences Rotary has created for them.

• Don’t pitch them a membership the way you always have. Instead, ask them for an investment and be able to describe the return they can expect on that investment. • Don’t ask for “volunteers” for a committee. Instead, invite them to collaborate with fellow Rotarians.• Think words don’t matter? Test these out and see for yourself.

Know your Audience • Need a sophisticated understanding of who they will be.• Know what they want. Ask them! They will be happy to tell you and offer to help make things happen. • Offer the specific programs to them. It’s About Culture • Millennials have an almost subliminal obsession with culture, and with finding people, places and organizations that match their values.

Collaboration • Find a place where individuals can come together and collectively produce something of value. • Engage in a two-way conversation where they feel like they’ve helped to shape the project’s goals.

Distributed Authority • Empowering leaders to feel ownership of projects or experiences will drive them to incredible results. • You need to be very carefulwho you place in leadership positions. But once you’ve matched the right person with the right project, the rest will take care of itself.

Recognition • After the fun is over you need to spend time thanking those people who made the event or program so great. This simple gesture will ensure that person is loyal to your Rotary for their entire career.

A BIT OF HUMOUR

AND DID YOU KNOW......A recent study found that the average Australian walks 1,450 kilometers a year.Another study found the average Australian consumes 100 litres of alcohol a year.

That means on average AUSSIES get 145 klm to the litre. Not too bad!!

GRANDMOTHERA grandmother is giving directions to her grown grandson who is coming to visit with his wife.

“You come to the front door of the apartment. I am in apartment 301 . There is a big panel at the front door. With your elbow, push button 301. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow, push 3. When you get out, I’m on the left.. With your elbow, hit my doorbell.”

“Grandma, that sounds easy, but, why am I hitting all these buttons with my elbow? .........

“What !!. . . .. .. You’re coming empty handed???”

IRISH BLONDE...An attractive blonde lady from Cork , Ireland , arrived at the casino. She seemed a little intoxicated and bet twenty thousand dollars in a single roll of the dice.

She said, “I hope you don’t mind, but I feel much luckier when I’m completely nude.” With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and with an Irish brogue yelled, “Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!”

As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed. “Yes! Yes! I won, I won!” She hugged each of the dealers, picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed.

The dealers stared at each other dumbfounded. Finally, one of them asked, “What did she roll?”The other answered, “I don’t know - I thought you were watching.”

MORAL OF THE STORY Not all Irish are drunks, not all blondes are dumb,

..... but all men...are men!
